Differences between a Resume and CV The resume and Curriculum Vitae (CV) are used to showcase one’s professional
skills and experiences and to capture employers’ attention to secure an interview.
Resume CV
Career
Goal
To obtain a non-academic position;
Applicable when applying for most
administrative, clinical, allied health, technical or human services positions
To obtain academic or research
positions, fellowships and residencies,
entrance into academic programs, and grants
Document
Purpose
To provide a brief, concise overview
of your education, relevant
professional experience, relevant
activities, skills that quickly illustrate
your qualifications for a specific
position or career field
To provide a detailed overview of
your education, relevant professional
experience, relevant activities, skills
that thoroughly illustrate your
academic and professional
accomplishments/activities
Length 1-2 pages – firm maximum of 2 pages 2+ pages – no maximum page limit
Transitioning Between A Resume and CV Depending on your need, you may wish to convert your resume into a CV or vice
versa. It can also be helpful to maintain both a resume and a CV.
Add academic research and writing projects you completed, publications and articles you
published, presentations you conducted, and workshops attended
Break broader section headings into multiple, specific section headings
o For example, instead of capturing multiple types of professional development activities
under “Professional Development”… break this section into “Conference Participation”,
“Presentations”, “Professional Memberships”, “Continuing Education”, etc.
Consolidate sections or reduce the number of sections included
Include only the information that is directly or related to the target position or that shows
leadership capabilities or accomplishments
Emphasize your related experiences (paid and unpaid positions, internships, rotations) – should
be the longest, most detailed section(s)
Include an Objective Statement at the top of your document to indicate the specific reason you
are submitting your resume (optional)
Make sure document ends up being no more than 2 pages long

4
Key Elements of Resumes/CV’s
Whether you choose to write a resume or a CV, there are some components that
should be included in both types of documents.
Heading/Contact Information:
Include your name (in larger font), permanent address and/or local address, e-mail address, phone number. Be
sure to use a professional e-mail address (such as [email protected]) or your ACPHS e-mail address.
Example: John Doe
123 Ellis Street, Boston, MA 01234 ● [email protected] ● (123) 456-7890
Education:
List the name and location of the institution(s), dates attended, and the type of degree you earned in reverse
chronological order. If you are still pursuing a degree, list the date that you expect you will earn the degree.
If you took only one or two courses at a college or university to fulfill a degree requirement, you usually do
not need to list that institution. Do not include high school credentials unless you have attended college for
less than two years. Study abroad information can be included in this section. GPA can be included if higher
than 3.0/4.0.
When completing a doctoral program, include the word ‘Candidate’ when listing the program in your
education section (see example below).
Example: Doctor of Pharmacy Candidate, May 2016
Albany College of Pharmacy and Health Sciences, Colchester, Vermont
Example: Bachelor of Science in Biomedical Technology, May 2014
Albany College of Pharmacy and Health Sciences, Albany, New York
Licensure/Certification (if applicable):
If your academic program leads to licensure or certification, or you choose to receive such credentials, include
this information under a separate heading from education.
Example: Radiologic Technologist Certification, New York State Department of Health, May 2014
Example: Pharmacy-Based Immunization Delivery, American Pharmacists Association, June 2013
5
Key Elements of Resumes/CV’s (continued)
Experience:
Employers focus heavily on the experience section(s) of the résumé or CV. Information about your
experience should include the name and location of the company, agency or institution, beginning and ending
dates of service, title of the position held, and a description of duties that uses active, energetic phrasing and
cites accomplishments. Highlight responsibilities that demonstrate initiative and special skills as opposed to
listing each duty on your job description. You can include both paid experiences (i.e. jobs, internships,
fellowships, residencies) and unpaid experiences (i.e. volunteer work, internships, campus/community
leadership), especially if you have sustained your commitment and have demonstrated an ability to apply your
knowledge and skills.
Example: See experience sections in the Sample Resumes section.
Other Resume/CV Sections:
A resume or CV is yours to create, manipulate, and develop over time, and the headings you choose to use to
create sections of information on your document depends on your unique experiences. Some suggested
headings that can be used on your resume or CV include (but are not limited to):
Research Experience
Clinical Experience
Honors and Awards
Committees
Publications
Presentations
Relevant Coursework
Skills (hard skills such as technology/computer proficiencies, language skills)
Volunteer Experience
Leadership Experience
Professional Development (best used on resume to briefly summarize continued learning/involvement)
Professional Affiliations
Related Experience
Additional Work Experience (for less relevant positions you want to include to avoid gaps in employment – you do not need to include descriptions of responsibilities)
6
Designing and Formatting your Resume/CV
Resumes and CV’s should be visibly neat, error-free, well-structured, and
adhere to basic guidelines for readability. Below are some guidelines for a
professional, easy-to-read document.
Text:
Choose to use ‘serif’ fonts (Bookman Old Style, Cambria, Georgia, Times New Roman) or ‘sans
serif’ fonts (Arial, Lucida Sans, Tahoma, Verdana)
Consistent use of no more than 2 font styles and sizes
Font size is between 10 and 14 points
Use of boldface, capitalized letters, italics, or underlining to make section headings stand out.
Same format used consistently among headings.
Page Layout:
0.7 to 1-inch page margins used throughout the document
Text justified to the left margin
No use of graphics or images
Documents longer than 1 page have a running header including full name and page #
Achieved reasonable balance between document text and “white space” (margins, spacing) so
material does not look overcrowded
Content:
Highest priority sections and experiences are toward the beginning of your document for
readers to quickly notice
Experiences are listed in reverse chronological order (from most recent to least recent)
Consistent use of format for telephone numbers, dates, abbreviations
Proofread your document carefully for grammar, spelling, syntax, and punctuation errors; use
your computer’s “spell check” feature
Abbreviated terms are spelled out the first time they are used (except for states and ‘GPA’)
Titles and terminologies are spelled out the first time they are used (Example: “American
Pharmacists Association - Academy of Student Pharmacists (APhA-ASP)” and
APhA-ASP when used later in document), except widely-known terms like GPA and CPR
Final Details:
Final document saved in PDF format for submitting through online applications or e-mail
Document is saved with a professional document title
Example: “Casey_Jones_CV_2014” or “C_Jones_CV_Residency”--- not “Casey’s Resume”,
“RESUME”, or “Resume FINAL”
Resume or CV is printed single-sided; pages are not stapled together after printed
Resume or CV and other documents (references page, cover letter, etc.) are ATTACHED to
an e-mail when application is being submitted, not included in the e-mail body
7
Writing Attention-Grabbing Action Statements Simply listing job titles, locations, and the date ranges of employment is not enough – employers
want to quickly get a sense of your responsibilities, skill set, and accomplishments in your past
positions and experiences relevant to your current career goal. “Action Statements” are brief
statements that include important details about your duties, responsibilities and
accomplishments in a position. Action statements should be listed underneath positions on your
resume or CV, be separated by bullets, and start with “action verbs”. A list of action verbs can
be found on page 8 of this guide.
When writing one action statement, include the following information if and when it is applicable. Starred
items (**) should always be included in your action statement:
**What action(s) did I take and which skill(s) did I use?
Examples: received, prepared, compounded and dispensed prescriptions…; counseled patients on....
**How did I complete this task/carry out this action/complete this project?
Examples: by researching…; by participating in…; by using…; through collaboration with…
Who did I collaborate with to complete this task, or who did I provide my services to?
Examples: older adult community members; individuals with type I diabetes; health care team members
Where, or in what specific physical environment did I perform this task or activity?
Examples: clinical laboratory setting; pediatrics unit; community center; health expo
When did I perform these actions/how often?
Examples: three times per week; annually; on a daily basis
Why was this action/responsibility important?
Examples: to meet the needs of ‘x’ population; to help individuals reach therapeutic goals; to create
bone health awareness; to ensure compliance with regulations
_________________________________________________________________________________
Enhancing Your Action Statements:
Poor: ● Research (Only describes what was done)
Better: ● Researched effects of tobacco use in New York (Elaborates on what and where/who)
Best:
Action verb What What Who How
● Researched the health risks and economic burdens of tobacco users in New York State by analyzing
quantitative data collected by the New York State Department of Health over a 10-year period
8
Sample Action Verbs Each of your “action statements” (see page 7) should start with an action verb. Action verbs are descriptive
verbs that illustrate the actions you took and skills you used in a way that grabs the reader’s attention. Try
to use a variety of action verbs throughout your document; use the list below to get started.
