WELCOME ACPE STUDENT MAKING A DIFFERENCE IN CAMBODIA On the 17th of June 2013, Sarah commenced her six months with CCF Volunteer Program. Sarah has been an excellent ambassador for ACPE during her 4 years, studying the Bachelor of Education Physical and Health Education Degree. Most importantly, Sarah has been an important member of the 2011 & 2012 ACPE Cultural Experience Programs to CCF and therefore has invaluable insight into CCF, Cambodia, and the programs ACPE has taught in 2011 and 2012. Sarah is passionate about CCF and shares a great connection with the children.Throughout Sarah’s time at CCF she will report back to ACPE and GOH on the progress of the PE program and ACPE will provide support and advice on how to continue to improve on the physical education program. Having Sarah at CCF will be extremely valuable for the 3rd ACPE Cultural Experience Program, due to return to CCF in November. The group will be able to compliment the work of Sarah conducting structured sporting lessons for the children. Sarah will then return to Australia with the group on the completion of their 3 week program. In the past 2 years ACPE has travelled to CCF with over $5,000 worth of donated sports equipment and educational resources, and has so far raised over $23,000 to construct 2 play areas in the satellite schools. ACPE is very enthusiastic about its involvement with CCF and is proud of the strong relationship which has developed over the 2 years. ACPE is also very pleased to witness the growth of the program with the commencement of the ACPE Graduate Volunteer Program and delighted with the support provided through the GOH scholarship program. Coming from the cold areas of the northern hemisphere it amazes me the great winters we have here in Sydney. I hope that you have been able to enjoy all that there is to offer. As you will see in this edition of the PACE Newsletter we have been very busy here at ACPE. For the fifth year running ACPE have brought back the Ann Mitchell Cup from the Eastern University Games. A great accomplishment! We are always looking for more ways to involve our alumni in more activity at ACPE and would like you to have a stronger voice. We are currently working on new opportunities and would like to have alumni participate. If you are interested please contact me at my email below. The second semester is now into its 7th week and the buzz of the student activity, the energy from the academics, and the unrelenting support from the staff create an enthusiastic environment that I am sure you all remember. In November of both 2011 and 2012, the ACPE Cultural Experience Program has travelled to the Cambodian Children’s Fund (CCF) in Phnom Penh, Cambodia to volunteer teach Physical Education.

university gAMesThe ACPE Pirates have recently returned from this year’s Eastern University Games (EUGs), held in Wollongong during July. 2800 students competed in the games from Universities in NSW, ACT and even one university from Auckland. 85 students represented ACPE playing in 9 sports: Men’s and Ladies’ Basketball, Men’s Futsal, Lawn Bowls, Men’s Squash, Men’s Surfing, Men’s Tennis, Men’s Touch, Mixed Oz Tag and Ultimate Frisbee.

Scott Reynolds and Vanessa Noble were the ACPE Team Captains, chosen for their dedication and involvement in ACPE University Sport. They were invited along with the other University Team captains to attend the Opening Ceremony VIP Function, which saw the games officially opened by the Lord Mayor of Wollongong. Our captains did a great job in representing the College at both the Opening Ceremony and during the Games.

On the first day of the EUGs ACPE won 22 out of 29 of their games. From that

moment we knew that ACPE were a force to be reckoned with. By the final day, ACPE had won 5 medals; Men’s Squash (Gold and Silver), Men’s Touch (Silver), Mixed Oz Tag (Silver) and Men’s Futsal (Bronze) as well as the Ann Mitchell Per Captia Trophy for the fifth time! (2005, 2006, 2007, 2012, 2013)

The receipt of the Ann Mitchell Cup for a fifth year is a result of the hard work that has been done with our students to ensure they show good sportsmanship, teamwork and ultimately respect for not just one another but their competitors. Our students worked extremely hard this year, getting to know one another and training well in advance of the event. We certainly saw the benefits of this dedication, through the results and their overall spirit throughout the games.

One of the most touching sights during the games was to see every ACPE student wearing black arm bands in memory of Daniel Berry (3rd Year coaching student) who passed away

O Week ACPE welcomed its newest intake of students on Wednesday 17th – Thursday 18th July. O Week began with a welcome from the Head of College, Brian Nook and was followed by a session of ‘Speed Friending’ between new and current students.

In true ACPE style, a welcome BBQ was held by student volunteers before meeting their new student groups as part of the Mentor Program – designed to provide new students advice around any issues that may be experienced in the first semester of study at ACPE. The customary ‘Race Around the Park’ gave newcomers the chance to familiarise themselves with venues around ACPE’s home, the Sydney Olympic Park.

during the EUG’s due to a brain tumour. The students also held a minute silence at our team meeting that evening. Daniel was a much loved ACPE student, his community spirit and love for sport was admired and will be remembered by all.

We are now working towards the Australian University Games which are held in September/October on the Gold Coast where we hope to build on our success for 2013.

ACPe grAduAte WOrking With Western sydney WAnderers fC2008 ACPE Graduate, Josh Hunter completed the Bachelor of Physical & Health Education, before moving into teaching at Chifley College Bidwill Campus for 5 years. As of this year, Josh followed his passion for football and secured a position with the Western Sydney Wanderers Football Club as Community, Pathway and Football Development Coordinator. Josh is working under fellow ACPE Alumni Student, Tim Thorne. His new role helps support local grassroots football with pathway and development programs, establishes a

strong volunteer network and supports indigenous & multi-cultural participation from the Western Sydney Communities. Josh’s move into his new role was influenced by his drive to work in a highly dynamic environment around a professional sporting team, and to also understand the importance of teachers and schools within the wider community context. Josh is motivated by his own ability to affect change and positively influence a broader demographic. We wish Josh the very best in his new role with the Western Sydney Wanderers.

Josh is working under fellow ACPE Alumni Student, Tim Thorne. Tim also moved into teaching after graduating from ACPE; first as a PDHPE Teacher at Mulwaree High School Goulburn for 2 years, before becoming a Specialist Primary PE Teacher at Newington College for 10 years. Tim left teaching to become a full time football coach and eventually became the Community and Technical Director at Gladesville Hornsby Football Association. Today, Tim is the Community Pathway and Football Development Manager for NRMA Insurance Western Sydney Wanderers FC.

ALuMni WAtChBen Carter (PDHPE degree) has taken the Australian tennis officiating world by storm and has developed into a formidable tennis official. Ben commenced his officiating career during his 2nd year at ACPE.

“My tennis coach and his son were involved in officiating and encouraged me to go with them to local tournaments to see what it was all about. It was a great way to travel and earn money at the time.” Carter remarked.

Since then, Ben has not looked back and gone from strength to strength in his officiating. Over the past four summers Ben has been selected for the APIA International – Sydney and the Australian Open, a great feat in itself. At the Australian Open in January, Ben made his Grand Slam debut as a Chair Umpire, umpiring a Boy’s Singles match during the tournament.

“It was definitely a highlight in my short officiating career, something I’ll treasure forever”. Carter said.

It’s been an adventurous 12 months for Ben who is now Chair Umpiring a number of International Tennis Federation (ITF) Pro Tour tournaments across Australia. These professional tournaments are played by many up and coming players who have come through the domestic system and are played in all parts of Australia.

In July last year Ben was invited to participate in Tennis Australia’s inaugural National Chair Umpire Academy. The academy brought together nine of the country’s best up and coming chair umpires for a series of professional development workshops and gave them the chance to work with some of Australia’s best Chair Umpires currently and in the past.

“The academy was a great opportunity to work with the best officials Australia has to offer including the Australian Open Referee Wayne McKewen who is a former Gold Badge Chair Umpire. I travelled to Melbourne on three occasions to work alongside these officials and also participated in a number of lectures including one based on sport psychology. I felt the academy was amazing to be a part of and it has definitely taught me so many things.”

Ben is embarking on his maiden overseas appointment as a Chair Umpire for the Oceania Closed Junior Championships (ITF) to be held in Fiji on 19th – 23rd August. The tournament will be played by some of the region’s best young junior players and Ben will be representing Australia as a Chair Umpire.

Ben enjoys the best of both worlds, during the week he is a PDHPE teacher at Camden High School and on the weekends and during the school

holidays is involved in another passion of his – tennis officiating.

“There are many weekends where I would fly out of Sydney on Friday night after school, officiate at a tennis tournament somewhere in Australia over the weekend and be back in the class room ready for period one on Monday”. Ben laughed.

For now Ben is looking forward to the warmer months of the year which signals the start of the Australian summer but encourages anyone looking to become an official his one piece of advice is – “If you put in the hard work then your efforts will be rewarded with priceless opportunities. You are the master of your own destiny”.

JuMPing tO neW heights ACPE’s Bachelor of Applied Fitness student Brandon Starc, reached new heights at the World Athletics Championships trials back in April, adding 5cm to his PB with a winning effort of 2.28m in the high jump. Younger brother of Australian Test Cricketer Mitchell Starc, Brandon was a latecomer to high jump, only seriously focussing on the event 4 years ago.

Since partnering up with high jump coach Alex Stewart, Starc has since added 40 cm to his jumping height. Since finishing fourth at the Australian All Schools Championships in 2009, he’s become an Australian under-17s champion, stole silver at the Youth Olympic Games in Singapore 2010, became Australian under-20s champion in 2011 and won gold at an international under 23s event in Germany in the same year. After smashing his PB at the National Championships this year, Brandon could be in medal contention come Glasgow and Rio. Watch this space!

reuniOn – CLAss Of ‘73 On Saturday 8th June, the ACPE class of 1973 gathered to celebrate their 40 year reunion. The event began on campus at ACPE, where guests were given a tour of the current ACPE facilities and then gathered in our student break out area to enjoy some drinks and nibbles, catching up with those not seen for many years. The class then headed across to a local restaurant for dinner, drinks and lots of reminiscing. The class of 73’ are hoping to make this an annual event moving forward.

Don’t forget the 100th anniversary of The Swords Club will be on display in the Heritage Centre until October 2013. The Swords Club is the oldest continually operating fencing club in Australia. It was founded by skilled swordsman Frank Stuart, who later established the ACPE in 1917 to train young women as sports mistresses. Together, these organisations pioneered the participation of women in competitive sport.

The exhibition celebrates the Club’s history and its role in the development of Australian fencing from a genteel activity for the elite, to today’s modern competitive sport which is open to all. Many club members also helped to popularise a romantic image of swordplay through film and theatre. The display features historic and modern costumes, weapons and equipment from The Swords Club and the ACPE.

ACPe grAduAte reCeives the PeArsOn student ACAdeMiC AWArd Jon McPhee had been a bank teller, a call centre operator, a warehouse worker, a retail sales assistant and a loss prevention manager all before his 29th birthday. Now, with the help of ACPE, Jon is realising his dream of making a career in sport. As a testament to his dedication, he has this month been awarded the Pearson Student Academic Achievement Award in the category of Nursing & Allied Health.

“This award means so much – it’s recognition of how hard I’ve worked over the past three years, and it is evidence of how much ACPE has helped me. To me, this award means I’ll be eternally grateful and linked to the college,” says Jon.

After failing to achieve his dream of becoming an elite NRL athlete, Jon had to make a choice – and he chose study. Jon has completed his Bachelors in Sports Coaching and Administration at ACPE and is currently completing a Masters degree in Sports Coaching.

Jon aims to start his own business which will specialise in sports consultancy in the areas of athlete development and administrative refinement, focusing in the area of domestic level competition where athletes have limited resources and experience at their disposal.

“I would like to use my business to start a program to assist in the development of sport in Pacific Island nations such as Papua New Guinea, where I’ve been recently doing development work in the community. This was an opportunity I was only afforded by being a student at ACPE – I was lucky enough to be selected by ACPE to attend a trip to Papua New Guinea with one of their partners the Canterbury Bulldogs. I spent eight days on this life-changing trip. We visited schools and played games of touch footy with them, teaching them how to pass, catch and kick.”
