In October 2009 ACO Technologies plccelebrated a quarter of a century as marketleader in the drainage business. During the25 years of ACO’s presence in the UK, therehave been many changes both for us as acompany and for our industry sector.

In addition to ACO’s broadening productranges, there have also been extensions to the ACO brand with names like ACO Build,ACO Building Drainage and ACO Wildlife andACO Sport joining the original ACO Drain.

The combination of advances made in designingsurface water management solutions and ourown extensive range of associated productsmeans that we feel it appropriate to change ourtrading name to ACO Water Management(AWM), with the sub-brand of “Drain” beingreplaced by “Civils + Infrastructure” and the sub-brand “Build” being replaced by“Urban + Landscape”.

The name change will take place withimmediate effect and the ACO brands willnow follow this structure:

SECTOR FOCUS - ACO STORMWATER CONTROL

ACO HAS LAUNCHED A RANGE OF ACO STORMWATER CONTROL SYSTEMS DESIGNED TO DEAL WITH THE STORAGE AND CONTROL OF ACCUMULATED WATER.

ACO Q-CEPTORACO Q-Ceptors are a range of oilseparators available in a varietyof chamber sizes and flow rates ideal for use in car parks, maintenance areas, and industrial and residential applications. Manufactured from polyethylene, the innovative single chamber design of the ACO Q-Ceptor is extremely compact and robust offering significantadvantages in installation and handling costsover traditional GRP products. ACO Q-Ceptorsare available in two performance classes asspecified by BS EN 858-1:2002.

Class 1 separators are designed to achievedischarge concentrations of less than 5mg/litreof oil under standard test conditions. Theseseparators are required for discharges to surfacewater drains and the water environment.

Class 2 separators are designed to achievedischarge concentrations of less than100mg/litre of oil under standard testconditions. They are suitable for dealing withdischarges where a lower quality requirementapplies, for example where the sewer providerallows discharges to the foul system.

Both Class 1 and Class 2 ACO Q-Ceptors are available as bypass or full retentionseparators.

ACO Q-BRAKE VORTEXACO Q-Brake Vortex is a vertical flow controlunit designed toregulate stormwaterflow before itdischarges into sewer networks or watercourses.

Manufactured from grade 304 stainless steel, each ACO Q-Brake Vortex is individuallyconfigured to suit specific performance criteria.

The ACO Q-Brake Vortex unit is based on thefluid mechanics principle of the forced vortexwhich permits flow regulation without anymoving parts.

ACO Q-Brake Vortex is fitted with an integralbypass gate which, in the event of a blockage, can be opened so the unit can be drained ofwater. A stainless steel wire attached to thebypass door is run to cover level and providescontrol of the bypass gate. Once the waterlevel within the manhole subsides the unit can be cleared.

The ACO Design Services department canutilise Micro Drainage® software to assist withthe design and analysis of any ACO Q-BrakeVortex installation.

ACO STORMTANKACO StormTank is the first modular storm water infiltration and attenuation system to fully overcome the problems created by silt build up and provision of tank access for inspection and maintenance – a majorissue in securing system adoption andplanning approval.

Manufactured from recyclable plastic, thelightweight material makes ACO StormTank easyto handle and quick to install. Each cell has a97% void ratio reducing the cost associated withexcavation and aggregates compared withtraditional gravel based solutions.

A series of unique, high performance channeldrainage systems designed and manufactured byACO Technic, the bespoke product developmentdivision of surface water management specialistACO Technologies, were installed acrossHeathrow’s award winning Terminal Five. As well as helping to overcome some significantchallenges posed by the site’s design, thesystems have played a key role in creating someof the terminal’s striking public areas.

“As ACO has a separate bespoke division, ACO Technic, we were able to work

with a dedicated team

that quickly determined that our proposalswere feasible. Not only were they able todevelop a purpose-built kerb drainage systemfor the deck, we were also able realise bespokedesigns for other drainage systems across theterminal complex” says Guy Collingwood,Consulting Engineer at TP Consulting.

A total of 1752 metres of the kerb drainagesystem were installed within the set-downarea and along the vehicle entry and exitramps from ground level. Based on ACO’sQueen’s Award winning KerbDrain system, two unit sizes were developed for the criticalpassenger set-down/pick-up area on level sixof the multi storey car park, directly oppositethe main terminal building.

Another bespoke system was developed forthe ground floor plaza area between theterminal building and the multi-storey carpark. “Here we needed a drainage conceptthat could help us meet the architect’saesthetic requirements,” explains GuyCollingwood. “This is an extremely visually

sensitive area. The objective was to create asurface that could unobtrusivelyaccommodate water features, lighting anddrainage, allowing the granite slabs coveringthe plaza to cleanly intersect with the maincar park and terminal structures.”

Again, two bespoke systems weremanufactured for the plaza area, based on the ACO Brickslot system.

Also, a number of standard ACO productswere used across the Terminal 5 complex. Two standard channels with locked cast irongratings were installed around the bus pull-insand ticket barriers within the multi storey carpark. And drainage to the main staff car parkis provided by 660 metres of ACO Qmax®

225 and 350 high capacity slot drainagesystems; selected because of their attenuationperformance and speed of installation.
