Editor’s letter...

The nights are starting to close in as we prepare for Autumn and once again, we benefit from the glorious colours this time of year brings (apparently this is a sign of me getting old!).

Maybe it is, but I love walking Digger (Our Border Terrier) in the woods and seeing the changes Autumn brings! I hope you enjoy reading all about our young people and what they have been up to in school. Thank you to the local primary schools who submit articles each month. Last but not least, well done to last month’s Doncaster Racecourse St Leger Winners who won County Enclosure tickets for opening day, Jonathon Hall from Haxey and Joe Williams from Auckley. I hope you had a lucky day! The deadline for the November issue is Wednesday 22nd October.

Best Wishes Michelle Sidebottom

News, News, News, News ... Contact

The Elderly

Contact The Elderly is National Organisation established in 1965 with now over 400 groups nationwide. The aim of the charity is to combat loneliness in our older citizens by organising tea parties on Sunday afternoons. Research has shown that Sunday afternoons can be one of the loneliest times of the week for those living alone, who find it difficult to get out and about. These Sunday afternoon friendship groups will meet once a month for afternoon tea and a chat. There is no charge. The groups are kept small 6-8 so that everyone can chat to everyone else. There is a chance to chat to new people and make new friends over a lovely afternoon tea between 3 pm and 5pm. The tea parties take place in the homes of our volunteer hosts who provide a tea, just once a year. Volunteer driv-ers collect the elderly guests at their own front door and drive them to the host’s home for tea where they will be warmly welcomed.

Ackworth has had it’s own Contact the Elderly group for the past three years and is always keen to hear of anyone who might like to join the group. Do you like entertaining? Have you a warm and welcoming home? Would you be able to host an afternoon tea for the group just once a year? Drivers are always needed too, so if you could spare two hours one Sunday in the month to drive for us then please do get in touch.

Also you might know of someone in the area who could benefit from getting out and about and joining the group Members must be over 75 and live alone.

For more information check out our website www.contact-the-elderly.org.uk or call Sue Smith-Wilkins on -01977 615608 for further details and of how you might become involved.

We did it! David Chorlton and I completed the Great North Run for Charity in September. We raised nearly £450 for Cancer Research UK and £300 for Sheffield Hospitals.

Thank you to everyone who supported us and to our respective other halves for team support on the day! It was a great experience (but I am not doing it again!)

There, it’s in black and white :)

The Gruffalo in Rainbows! Rainbows went for a walk down to the new outdoor classroom. On the way we passed the hens in their new pen. We pretended that we were in the Gruffalo‟s wood and all the children were excited to see the log pile house of the snake and the tree top house of the owl.

We all sat in the classroom and we talked about what might live in the wood. I then read the story “The Gruffalo”. It was a brilliant experience and all the children loved it.

We are planning to use the classroom regularly. Mrs Campbell.

Scarlet said “I liked the chickens” Harry said “We saw some snake homes” Carla said “I saw the log pile house”

Macmillan Coffee Morning!

On 26th September, school hosted their first Macmillan coffee morning to raise money for people living with cancer.

Thank you to everyone who supported one of the biggest coffee morning events in the world in aid of such a worthy cause. When you think about it, coffee and cake really does give us comfort and a time to talk and socialise with others and by doing this we are in a small way ensuring that other families receive the support and advice that they need.

Your kind donations of buns and cakes and the purchasing of tea, coffee, juice and biscuits enabled us to raise £200.67. Thank you again.

A special thank you must go to Mrs Laycock, Mrs Lee, Mrs Malkin, Mrs Bagg and Mrs Dwight for helping at the coffee morning and to Harrison, Zack M, Evie C and Olivia P in class 6 for ensuring everything ran smoothly.

All Saints

St Cuthberts &

As our suntans begin to fade and the memories of summer holidays now seem distant this month of October every much establishes the season of Autumn. There is little if any evening light left after the working say and there is a definite chill in the air if not already begun, night frosts won’t be far away!

As for the Church our festivals and celebrations are on the 18th for St Luke (the gospel writer) and St Simon and St Jude (apostles) on the 28th. However, October is also the month when we remember and give thanks to God for the harvest at our Harvest Thanksgiving services at St Cuthbert’s and All Saints’(12th).

Harvest Festivals or Harvest Thanksgivings, as the Church calls it, are traditionally celebrated this month, although most things are actually harvested in August and September, or even earlier in this year with such a hot early summer! Although it may seem like a festival that has always been around, it really has only been celebrated in the Christian Church since the mid 1800’s. In folklore and pagan tradition the gathering of the harvest, getting food into store for the winter, has long been a cause for celebration. Most people, even if they have no church connections will remember harvest festivals in schools when everyone took a gift of fruit and veg, neatly arranged in a box covered in plastic or cling film.

So why continue to celebrate today, when we seem to have plenty of food with no chance of starvation in the winter? Well, if for no other reason, we can give thanks that the majority of people in this country have more that enough to sustain them. It is however, a time to remember those who do not have enough, in fact the millions who are starving to death because their crops failed and they have no harvest to celebrate.

Harvest festivals can be a spur to action. The best celebrations are usually those we share with others; parties and anniversaries to which we invite family and friends. So, the best way we can give thanks and celebrate our good harvest is to share with our neighbours who have had little, if any harvest. ‘A problem shared is a problem halved’ that is certainly true for the starving and homeless in our world. Yours in Christ Rev’d Paul Hartley
