Thank you for joining us at the Wales Millennium Centre in Cardiff for the 83rd Federation Conference.

Cardiff is an exciting, vibrant and cosmopolitan capital city and we are delighted to welcome you.

Cardiff Bay offers the largest waterfront development in Europe with a blend of modern and Victorian buildings and a wealth of places to eat, relax and chat - alongside traditional attractions, including a fairy-tale castle in the middle of the city and a fine museum housing one of the best Impressionist collections outside Paris.

In times gone by Cardiff Bay helped to influence the industrial age through inspiration, innovation and bold decisions.

This week we invite you to influence the future of our organisation • through the inspiration of our amazing speakers, • through the innovative projects which are our responses to challenges faced, and • through the bold decisions that each and every one of us can make.

This is your chance to Step Up and Lead the Way. Take advantage of the opportunity over these few days to mix and mingle, to connect and catch-up. Share ideas with each other, explore new approaches and experience the energy of our members.

Have fun and enjoy this conference,

In friendship

MANDY HICKSON @MandyHickson

Mandy was a Royal Air Force fast jet (Tornado) pilot and is now an inspirational keynote speaker.

One of the first female pilots on her frontline Tornado GR4 squadron, flying multi-million-pound fast jets for the Royal Air Force, Mandy worked in a constantly challenging, yet exhilarating environment.

She offers a unique insight into this elite world, supported by anecdotes about her time on the front line. She demonstrates only too well the importance of remaining calm under pressure and leading, quite literally, from the front, in order to get the best from herself and her team. With frankness and humour, she talks about the strategies she employed to succeed in her high-flying, high-risk role.

She has boundless energy and an overriding purpose of the end goal.

Mandy truly believes that, with hard work and self-belief, anyone can achieve their ambitions. Mandy puts huge energy, creativity and passion into every speech to create an event that is unique and memorable. Mandy brings a wealth of insights from her years serving on the operational front line, where a keen sense of humour has been the key to her success and survival.

rs DAME KATHERINE GRAINGER DBE @KatherineGraingerOfficial

Katherine Grainger is Great Britain’s most decorated female Olympian, our most successful female rower and the only female athlete, in any sport, to gain medals in four consecutive Olympic Games. In 2012 Katherine’s dreams were realised when she won the elusive Olympic Gold medal alongside teammate Anna Watkins in the double sculls in London.

Appointed Commander of the Order of the British Empire (CBE) for services to rowing in the 2013 New Year

Honours, she was made a Dame in the New Year Honours List 2016 for her services to rowing and to charity.

During a two-year break from the GB Rowing Squad, when she completed her PhD and wrote her autobiography Dreams Do Come True, Katherine was a BBC presenter and pundit in the 2014 Commonwealth Games in Glasgow.

Returning to the GB Rowing squad and a demanding training regime at the end of 2014, she qualified for the Olympic Games in Rio 2016 with her new partner in the double sculls, Victoria Thornley. On 11 August 2016, Katherine became the most decorated female Olympian of all time winning a silver medal, narrowly missing the gold after leading for three quarters of the race.

Many people had not expected this pairing to even qualify for Rio, so their result was outstanding and propelled Katherine into the history books. With a natural talent as a speaker, Katherine shares her stimulating and compelling tale of her journey to success.

REBECCA LEWIN MSci @PlanUK

Rebecca is Director of Logistics & Procurement at Plan International, covering more than 50 countries. Her responsibilities span a global supply chain including more than 3000 vehicles, over 600 physical premises and a spend of more than €400m a year. Rebecca’s role takes her from Latin America, to West Africa, to Asia and the Pacific and varies from supporting the operations of long term development projects to working in rapid onset humanitarian crises.

After graduating from University College London with a Masters in Astrophysics, Rebecca has worked in the NGO sector for over a decade including at Merlin, Oxfam GB and with the Global Logistics Cluster at WFP. A sector specialist on cash and markets based programming and the links therein to Humanitarian Supply Chains, Rebecca was among a delegation representing Logistics at the World Humanitarian Summit in Istanbul. With many publications to her name, Rebecca’s other achievements include leading the innovative interagency partner capacity building project PARCEL and the development of the resource page for cash and markets information.

Plan International is an independent development and humanitarian organisation that advances children’s rights and equality for girls. Plan believes in the power and potential of every child. But this is often suppressed by poverty, violence, exclusion and discrimination. And it is girls who are most affected. Working together with children, young people, supporters and partners, Plan strives for a just world, tackling the root causes of the challenges facing girls and all vulnerable children.

kersKEVIN HYLAND OBE

Kevin is the UK’s first independent anti-slavery commissioner. He was appointed as ‘designate’ Commissioner in November 2014 and became Commissioner when the

UK’s Modern Slavery Act received Royal Assent in March 2015. He works to spearhead the UK’s response to modern slavery. His aims are twofold: to see an increase in the number of victims of modern slavery identified and referred for appropriate support; and, in tandem, to see an increase in the numbers of prosecutions and convictions of traffickers and slave masters. A former head of the London Metropolitan Police Service’s Human Trafficking Unit and a police officer of 30 years, Kevin specialised in investigation of serious organised crime, including homicide, gun crime, anti-corruption and human trafficking

and slavery. @UKAntiSlavery

KIM-ANN WILLIAMSON Kim-Ann is a member of the Wales Anti-Slavery Leadership Group and is the Strategic Objectives Lead, chairing the Training Sub-Group that delivers the multi-agency training strategy for Wales. She also

chairs the Wales Anti-Slavery Operational Delivery Group which facilitates the sharing of good practice and delivery of local initiatives through the Regional Anti-Slavery Groups. In addition Kim-Ann chairs the Wales Anti-Slavery Casework Review Group which by sharing good practice seeks to improve the investigation and prosecution of slavery cases and the provision of support to survivors. She also chairs Wales Sex Worker Support Sub-Group, as well as the UK Modern Slavery Training Delivery Group which reports to the Home Office Modern Slavery Unit. Kim-Ann began her career with the Metropolitan Police Service and worked in various units including CID, Child Protection and Domestic Abuse Teams. In 1997, she transferred to the Crown Prosecution Service and has worked in London, Wiltshire and is currently working in Wales.

STEPHEN CHAPMAN Stephen is the Welsh Government’s Anti-Slavery Co-ordinator. He has also worked for the London Organising Committee for the Olympic & Paralympic Games, the UK Border Agency, the Police Standards Unit & Violent Crime Unit at the Home Office, Cardiff Council and in the Police Service. Stephen leads and co-ordinates the multi-agency response to tackle slavery which aims to make Wales hostile to slavery and provide the best possible support for survivors. He is a member of the Wales Anti-Slavery Leadership Group, Inter-Departmental Ministerial Group for Modern Slavery, Home Office Modern Slavery Strategic Implementation Group, All Wales Portal Group, Modern Slavery Helpline Advisory Board, Board Member Crimestoppers Cymru and a member of a number of other key UK and National Groups. Stephen is also proud to be an Ambassador for the White Ribbon Campaign which promotes men taking a stand to end violence against women.

VICTORIA PRITCHARD Victoria Pritchard, 39, is a Chartered Human Resources professional, and currently works as Head of HR for Ellis Whittam, a fixed fee employment law and health & safety consultancy. Victoria first became a Soroptimist in 2003 in SI Nantwich. She joined SI Ellesmere Port in 2010 and was instrumental in creating the new Club in Chester, becoming its Founder President when it was chartered in February 2015. She has served as a Regional Representative, Treasurer and Secretary twice.Victoria represented SIGBI on the Young Voices Panel at the 2015 SI

Convention in Istanbul, and earlier this year was a member of the SI delegation (all in their 20s & 30s) to the UNESCO NGO Forum in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia on the theme of ‘Youth and their Social Impact’. Passionate about SI’s goals to enable, educate and empower women and girls, Victoria believes that in order for us to be relevant in this connected internet age, we need to be quicker to adopt new technology as well as more flexible and responsive to new ideas in order to fulfil our mission and bring younger women into SI.

Jodie Foster Jodie-Leigh Foster, 19, is a Student from Middlesbrough. She is passionate about improving women and young people’s quality of life. This interest came through voluntary work within her local area and feeding into national and European research projects, some of which highlight the importance of children’s rights and safeguarding children. For the past 5 years, she has been volunteering at Barnardo’s, and has been involved in multiple projects and opportunities which enable young people to fight against Child Sexual Exploitation (CSE). She started off by working to prevent young people going missing from home; this then moved on to developing an information pack which helps young people address risks and make positive choices. She was

also asked to feed into the development of the Wud U app. Jodie is often asked to engage in research to ensure young people’s views are heard. With funding from the Police Crime Commissioner, she was part of a group who wrote and starred in a film called ‘It’s Not Your Fault’ which follows the lives of 5 girls affected by CSE. Due to her passion to help improve the lives of others through empowering young people to speak out against sexual violence and work to support gender equality within her local area, earlier this year she was sponsored by SI Middlesbrough and The National Alliance of Women’s Organisations to speak at the UN’s 61st Commission on the Status of Women in New York.

Along with the current vocalists, Petra Morgan and Lee Gilbert, the band has performed at many different venues from village halls to the Mayfair and Claridge’s Hotels.

BRISTOL MILITARY WIVES CHOIR @ BristolMWCMilitary Wives Choirs provide a head-start for women in the military community to make new friends, connect with local communities and learn new skills in a fun and supportive environment. Families of service personnel move around frequently and it can be tough to put down roots, make new friends and get to know people. Add to that the stresses and strains of loved ones being deployed away from home, often for long periods, and life can have its challenges.By coming together to sing, each choir creates a valuable support network for women in the military community. Choir members can help one another through the tough times, celebrate the good times and sing through it all together! Bristol Military Wives Choir started in December 2012 and has grown from 12 ladies on the first night to a membership of 45 and growing. Most ladies are posted here for 2 years but we do have several veterans’ wives or non-mobile spouses. We are a tri-service choir with ladies attached to the Navy, Army and Air Force and also some overseas families and MOD support staff are represented.

The 21st Quadrennial Convention hosted by SI South West Pacific (SISWP) will be held in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia from 19th – 21st July 2019, making it a historic first time in Asia. The 3 day Convention will have global keynote speakers and panellists on topics that focus on key UN Sustainable Development Goals that empower and advance the rights and status of women and girls.

We fervently hope that many members from SIGBI will save the date and keep yourself updated, as new developments are being unveiled on our website www.siconventionkl2019.org.

The SI Convention Committee looks forward to welcoming our Soroptimist delegates from SIGBI as well as the other 3 Federations to a fun filled, memorable and uniquely “Malaysia, All of Asia” experience in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia.

MARIET VERHOEF-COHENSoroptimist International President 2017 - 2019Dear Soroptimists of Great Britain and Ireland

As one of my first events after assuming the office of SI President, it is a pleasure and an honour to attend SIGBI’s 83rd Annual Federation Conference in Cardiff and to meet as many members of your Federation as possible!

The Conference theme, “Step Up, Lead the Way”, is highly appropriate as both an appeal and an inspiration – also for Soroptimist International, as we explore paths to secure the future of our organisation. After all, we have important challenges in our role as a “global voice for women”! Working together, Soroptimists throughout the world can lead the way to achieving gender equality. As women in business and professions we know that empowering women and girls with more choices and greater freedom is crucial to ensuring a better future. Let us use our influence to lead the way to a world free from poverty and with human rights for all, with no abuse and where women are treated with respect and dignity.

In this spirit I look forward to seeing you in Cardiff!
