Memory Verse Psalm 119: 105 Your word is a lamp to my feet and a light for my path. This series of 10 sessions is aimed at helping children to understand more about The Bible. It will begin with an overview of how the Bible is divided into sections and a little bit of the history. It will finish with a review and quiz. The 8 weeks in between will be spent helping children to explore each of the sections: what the books have in common, why you might want to look there, who they were written by, how long ago they were written etc These sessions are ‘hands on’ so that children are using Bibles to find the right chapter and verse. The Good News or NIRV Bibles are good for this. Children could be encouraged to bring their own Bible as well. The memory verse should be recalled each week emphasising the importance of reading the Bible: that God reveals himself to us through the Bible, that it provides us with guidance and that it gives us answers to many of life’s big questions. Each session has a story focus which will make it easier to plan for younger children. The session planner can change this if they wish. The older children should be able to spend more time discussing, finding, sorting and recalling while the need for a story to focus on can be important for the younger children. At the beginning or end of a session you could ask the children to recall previous sessions or the books covered so far. If the group nature and characters allow for it, you could challenge some to memorise, make it competitive, see how far around the circle they can get listing Bible books etc. This will help the children to understand the flow of sessions (and may help if you are waiting for parents). These are some general activities that could be made in week 1 and used in the following weeks as extra games when needed. They could also be used for the Review in week 10. Atthebeginningorendofasessionyoucouldaskthechildrentorecallprevioussessionsorthebookscoveredsofar.Ifthegroupnatureandcharactersallowforit,youcouldchallengesometomemorise,makeitcompetitive,seehowfararoundthecircletheycangetlistingBiblebooksetc.Thiswillhelpthechildrentounderstandtheflowofsessions(andmayhelpifyouarewaitingforparents).
