Underfloor electrical installation duct for screed-covered installation

For electrical installation in the floor, theUnderfloor installation ducting system is laid onthe construction concrete before the final floorscreed is applied.

A very high degree of connection flexibility from:

� Subsequent drilling of duct (fitting of a US80 duct outlet, see page 13).

� Changing service box mounting plates(adding pedestal or flush floor serviceoutlets, see Cat.-Gr. 56 and 57).

Important instructions which must be considered before laying the carpet!Before laying the carpet, you need to decide what function the Underfloor box should perform, “junctionbox” (see Fig.1) or “service box” (see Fig.2), as this decision affects which end cover has to be fitted insteadof the protective cover. This will determine where the floor covering is cut.

Cassette solutions for junction boxesand service boxes in floors with hardfloorings

The Cassette solutions are designed for use in dryrooms. The range includes cassettes with a centertube cord outlet for floors which are mopped andversions with a edge cord outlet for dry cleanedfloors, plus blanking cassettes. They fulfil all therequirements of DIN VDE with respect to moistureprotection and load-bearing capability. The narrowcassette frame fits flush with the floor coveringafter it is laid.

The cables are protected and tread-proof, either bymeans of the edge cord outlet (for dry cleanedfloors) or by means of a center tube cord outlet (formopped floors). Cassettes of different heights areavailable to suit different flooring thicknesses.

Cassette solutions – number ofmounting boxes which can be fitted

For the RKS cassette with edge cord outlet, up tothree mounting boxes (GB2, GB3) can be fittedinto the UZD 250-2 and 350-2. This means thescreed height must be at last 75 mm.

For the cassette with the RKF center tube cordoutlet, the number of mounting boxes alsodepends on the available height “from the topedge of the raw floor to the top edge of thescreed” (see diagram opposite). The middlemounting box can only be used if E ≥ 130 mm. Ifthere is sufficient installation depth, a ladderextension (Part No. 30768A must always be usedfor the middle mounting box.

A WAEG-U or WAEG6C-U RJ45 connection unitcan be fitted instead of a mounting box.

Once the ‘te li floor’ duct system has been laid and the screed hasset, the installation protection cover of the underfloor junction andbranch box is replaced with an appropriate mounting cover forfitting the service outlet box. The minimum screed height requiredis 70 mm. If the underfloor box is not used immediately, theflooring is glued over it. The flooring is later cut away to reveal theblank cover plate and fit in the service outlet box (Cat. Gr. 57 – GES)(see also instructions Cat. Gr. 30 – EÜK).

Before laying the carpet, the DUG assembly cover must be fitted.See note on page 4 for carpet cutting information.

Use in poured screeds

When using screed-covered duct system inpoured screeds, all the openings in the ductsystem must be sealed using appropriatemeans (e.g. using adhesive tape).

Care should be taken to ensure that thesealing process does not create hollow areasbetween the components and the screed.Possible openings can be found, for example,at joints between ducts and connection lugsand vertical bends or to underfloor boxesUZD/UGD. The top connections, like theassembly protection cover and the assemblyor blanking covers should be sealed usingappropriate means.

Aggressive screed(e.g. magnesia screed)

With this screed, all metallic componentswhich come into contact with the screedshould be protected with an accreditedcorrosion protection agent based on epoxyresin (two coats).

See also VOB Part C (ATV) DIN 18353 paragraph 3.1.8.

Use in poured asphalt

Essentially, there are no restrictions withrespect to the use of the installation ductsystem in poured asphalt.

The following is deemed as the mostpractical approach to using the system inpoured asphalt:

a) Under no circumstances must the screed-covered ducts come into direct contact withthe poured asphalt. The high installationtemperature (approx. 250ºC) means that it isnot impossible for metallic components to bedeformed.

b) The duct systems are laid on the raw floorand fixed in accordance with the fittinginstructions.

c) The duct routes are protected against heatshock using an appropriate layer of insulation(e.g. Fasoperl sheets or bitumen-coatedcorrugated cardboard).

d) The box bodies do not require additionalinsulating strips.

e) The poured asphalt is applied.

Notes on using screed-covered duct systems inscreed

Screed work

As the duct system or part of the duct system serves as a binding pullgauge for the screed, the levelling must be agreed with theconstruction company.

When applying the screed, the person laying the screed must carefullyprepare, seal and pull away the screed around the junction boxes.Divider strips must not be used as the junction boxes can only achievethe robustness specified if they are joined directly to the screed. Usingdivider strips can damage the flooring.

Important:

Screed can be damaged by cracks. Do not put strain on adjacentsystems and system components that are joined to the screed beforethe screed has hardened.

Screeds, general.

Under some circumstances, chemical or thermal strain can occur whichmeans taking special additional measures to protect the installedsystems (see e.g. VOB Part C (ATV), DIN 18353, Paragraph 3.1.8).

1. Using the duct layout plan to select a fixed startingpoint for the installation, for example a junction box.

2. Tie two guide lines (approx 150mm above the rawconcrete) at 90º to each other, ensuring that theymatch the duct layout plan.

3. Position the first junction box centrally below theintersection of the guide lines and level to requiredscreed depth. (boxes supplied adjusted to 70mm).

The desire to open the whole length and width of trunking is apractical requirement that makes laying cables easier and allowsbetter use of the inside of the trunking. The number of cables laidcan be changed rapidly and new connection requirementsaccommodated.

The “Open trunking for connection technology” incorporatescovers to fit and extend flush floor service units and pedestal serviceunits. Varying these device connections and usage covers canproduce connection patterns that are oriented towards therequirements.

The flush floor trunking system OKA 2 is supplied as a ready-to-fitpackage.

The use of extension units – means the trunking is left free forcables.

Use in poured screeds

When using flush floor trunking systems inpoured screed, all the openings in the ductsystem must be sealed using appropriatemeans (e.g. using adhesive tape).

Care should be taken to ensure that thesealing process does not create hollowareas between the components and thescreed. Possible openings can be found,for example, at joints between trunkingunits, at branches, additional units andend caps, and where the bottom section ofthe trunking meets the side profile. Thetops of the channels – side profiles andcover joints - should also be sealed usingappropriate means.

Aggressive screed

(e.g. magnesia screed) With this screed, allmetallic components that come intocontact with the screed should beprotected with an accredited corrosionprotection agent based on epoxy resin(two coats). See also VOB Part C (ATV) DIN18353 paragraph 3.1.8.

Use in poured asphalt

Essentially, there are no restrictions withrespect to the use of the installationtrunking system in poured asphalt.

The following is deemed as the mostpractical approach to using the system inpoured asphalt:

a) Under no circumstances must thetrunking system come into direct contactwith the poured asphalt (with theexception of the screed anchors). The highinstallation temperature (approx. 250ºC)means that it is not impossible for metalliccomponents to be deformed.

b) The trunking system is laid on the rawfloor and fixed in accordance with thefitting instructions (fit the screed anchorsat the points shown).

c) An insulating strip of approx. 15 to 20mm is applied to both sides of thetrunking.

d) The poured asphalt is applied. Once ithas cooled, the insulating strip betweenthe duct and the screed plate is removedand the gap is filled with an appropriatesealant (e.g. cold bitumen) so the surface isflush.

Screed work

As the trunking system will form part of the finished floor it isimportant to ensure that the entire system is levelled to the correctheight, agreed within the construction company.

When applying the screed it must be ensured that the concrete isforced into and around the side profile leaving no air gaps.Protective strips must not be applied to the trunking, preventing airgaps, as the trunking systems can only achieve the strength androbustness specified if they are joined directly to the screed. Usingprotective strips can damage the flooring and reduce itsrobustness.

Important:

Screed can be damaged by cracks. Do not put strain on adjacentsystems and system components that are joined to the screedbefore the screed has hardened.

Screeds, general.

Under some circumstances, chemical or thermal strain can occurwhich means taking special additional measures to protect theinstalled systems (see e.g. VOB Part C (ATV), DIN 18353, Paragraph 3.1.8).

1. Using the trunking / duct layout plan select a fixedstarting point of the installation. Mark the position ofthe (branch units / junction boxes) on the slab (rawconcrete).

Attention: - Don't walk over the trunking duringscreed work! Trunking can be used to even/smooththe screed. Side profiles must be fully supported byscreed.

13. Earthing of trunking:All metallic parts of the trunking (base and sideprofiles) provide location for the earth conductorclamp 8AWR (separate order no.).

14. Trunking units with nominal size >350 cover jointsupports are used instead of cover joints. Adjustcover joint supports to correct height. Adjust theadjustment screw to appropriate height. For unevenslabs, open trunking base so that the support standson the raw concrete.

15. To ease electrical installation, the trunking covers,cover joints and cover joint supports can be removed.

Attention: If cover joint supports are removed, thecorrect position and height adjustment of thesupport screw has to be checked carefully whentrunking is closed.

System components forhollow floorsOne way of supplying the workstation with connections to powerand information technologynetworks in administrative buildingsis by using hollow floors. This floorreplaces conventional screed and is araised floor with a jointless supportplate made of poured screed.

Holes can be made in the supportlayer to fit flush floor service unitseither:

� When pouring the floor byusing appropriate boarding.

� By subsequent drilling using adiamond bit (dry drillingprocess).

This means connection requirementscan be accommodated anywhereand at any time.

The installations are made in thehollow floor from the distributionsystems for each floor, which arenormally at the heart of the building.Supply zones in the hollow flooreither have a considerable number ofinspections opening in rows or, andthis is the preferred option, have afeed trunking which is openthroughout. The cables are gatheredinto bundles and then ledindividually to the relevantworkplaces. Any underfloor sub-distribution systems required shouldthen be placed in these zones.

System components forraised floorsRaised floors generally consist ofindividual raised floor tiles (f) whichare easy to re-configure or replace.This means the workstationconnections can be arrangedvariably. Installation systems like theACPS system, or the conventionalinstallation system – a combinationof underfloor distribution, flush floorservice units and pre-wiredmounting boxes – make providingelectricity to large raised floorsurfaces easier. Both systemsolutions – ACPS and conventional –offer great flexibility to futurechanges to workplace requirement.

Underfloor distribution systems andACPS system components are laid ina grid of 7 to 10 m and supply acorresponding number of workstations with all the necessaryconnections (power, data, andtelephone).

When work stations are beingregrouped, the flexible connectingcables between underfloordistribution systems or ACPS andfloor boxes or cable outlets enablethe ‘raised floor connection tile’,including the floor box, to be movedto ‘its’ new work station within alimited area. This means it is notnecessary to disconnect an existingelectrical connection. All that isrequired is to pick up the relevantrow of floor plates and re-configureit. This can be done without theassistance of skilled electricians. Evenmore major installation changes,during which electrical connectionsneed to be disconnected, can bedone without skilled electricians. Thepluggable connections mean that allthe necessary workplace connectionsare quickly ready for use.

On floor electrical installationtrunking

The on floor installation trunking –AIK – is used in projects to redevelopold buildings and has all the benefitsof an underfloor trunking withrespect to capacity and connectionflexibility. All that is required for it tobe added to the existing floorconstruction are holes through thewalls.

The on floor installation trunking AIKconsists of a base tray section madeof pre-galvanised sheet steel, whichis attached to the floor with screwsor dowels. Single compartmenttrunking base can be separated into2 or 3 compartments using max. 2partition walls.

The trunking cover, which can bewalked on, is made of 3 mm sheetsteel (or 4 mm sheet steel for 350mm nominal size) and is screwed tothe base tray section before theflooring is glued onto it.

te li tank – T8NL –Te li tanks are installation units which project above the floor, usedfor installation devices for power, telecommunications and data.The various types of current are segregated from one another bymeans of partition walls. These installation units are available invarious different sizes as a function of the number of installationdevices to be fitted.

They are generally fitted to junction boxes and trunking covers inwhich the appropriate holes have been made. Another option is todrill the trunking subsequently. However, it does not matterwhether the floor is screed, stone tiles, wood, vinyl or carpet. Thesize of the trunking with the holes in is also irrelevant.

Te li tanks have ground seals which prevent water getting into theunderfloor trunking system when the floor is mopped. te li tanksmust not be positioned in high-traffic areas and they must bearranged to fit with the furniture in the room. Care should be takento ensure that they are placed as near as possible to or underneaththe working equipment, so there is no risk of tripping over thecasings and connecting cables.

Function and design� The distinctive design – concentric circles, emphasized by

contrasting finish for the recesses – means that the time-consuming process of cutting the flooring into the coverrecess is no longer necessary, and makes the unit lighterand easier to handle.

� The surface structure reliably prevents damage andscratching the finish, so they can also be used in highvisibility areas, such as museums, ticket offices andexhibition centres.

� The circular form of the device insert is non-directionalwhich means it can be combined with any shape of floorpattern.

� All the materials used are scratch resistant and resistantto normal detergents and cleaning agents.

System 55

The underfloor system 55 enableselectrical and data equipment to be fittedin floors with screed depths of 55 mmand above. Based on a flush floor serviceunit with a fixed height of 55 mm powersocket outlets and data connection unitswhich have been optimised to suit thisapplication. The size of the flush floorservice unit is sufficient to supply one ortwo office workplaces.

Flush floor service unit for System 55The flush floor service units have a metaldevice holder which is pre-fitted in thefactory and into which the installationdevices can be fitted directly.

Installation devicesAckermann power socket outlets aremounted horizontally. They have theirown strain-relief mechanism and a 105ºangle of entry. Because of the restrictedspace, only connection cables withangled plugs can be used.

Data connection socketsBecause of the installation spaceavailable, only the connection socketsprovided can be used: UAE, TAE andWAEG-U and WAEG6C-U connectionunits.

Cable guidanceThe opening, flush floor trunking systemOKA2 with nominal height of 40 mm +30 mm levelling range is suitable forcable guidance.

To keep the cable guidance area as smallas possible, extension units that can befitted on the side are also available (onrequest).

Housing made of high-impact resistantpolyamide, suitable for 4 or 8 installationdevices (max. installation depth 48 mm)with holder ring or bracket (60 or 67 mmfixing center) and for devices with flange-fitting, e.g. CEE® industrial plugconnector (fixing center 60 x 60 mm or70 x 70 mm). Each installation device iscovered with a separate cover plate so itcan be fitted or removed individually.

There is a perforated insulation wall toseparate devices with different voltageratings or circuits from one another.Power is supplied through cable bushes*(with strain-relief clips for cables with adiameter of up to 14 mm) next to thesuspension shackle in the housing.

Colour combination yellow/black inaccordance with VBG 125, safetylabelling in the workplace.

Suspension is as follows:- Service modules for electricalconnections only, using a knotted linkchain. This is suspended in the shackleplaced in the suspension shackle of thehousing.- Service modules for electrical andcompressed air connections, using an airconduit connected to a suspensionshackle and a tension spring. Thecompressed air conduit is fed into thehousing.

The VHF8 Service module is speciallydesigned to be used in damp and wetareas, e.g. workshops, laboratoryenvironments, large-scale kitchens,bakeries, slaughterhouses, etc. Theinstallation of protective devices cansecure workplaces in accordance withDIN VDE 0100 part 737. The module andthe installation devices available (see Cat.Gr. 78 – Installation and connectiondevices for electrical installation systems)offer a degree of protection of IP 44(splash-proof).

* Cable bushes must not be used asblanking stops. Cable blind plugs or twistnipples with M20 thread in accordancewith DIN EN 50262 should be used forthis purpose. These must be fixed with ahex head nut.
