Career Pathways at Achievement First
We know that great teachers want to
continue to learn and grow, and at
Achievement First they are consistently
supported, challenged and inspired to
take their crat to the next level.
I started teaching because I saw in
my own lie the power o education
to change lives.

When I came to observe the morning circle
at Amistad Academy Middle School, I saw
the teachers stepping out and recognizing
students. The school had a powerul and
positive sense o community. I saw that the
school was the perect match or what I
wanted to happen or kids, and I really
wanted to be a part o it.
Sue graduated rom Wheelock College with a
B.A. in education. Ater graduation, she
taught English and social studies in Sueld,
CT. Sue then came to Amistad AcademyMiddle School, Achievement Firsts fagship
school, and taught th and sixth grades.
Two years later, Sue became the academic
dean and held this position or our years until
she decided to go back to teaching ull time.
Currently, Sue teaches English and coaches
teachers and deans.
JABARI DERRICK
I elt a strong desire to work at Achievement
First because I saw how everyone was
super supportive and working together
toward closing the achievement gap. I saw
that everyone was laser ocused on the
mission.
Jabari graduated rom Dillard University with
a B.A. in English. Ater graduation, he taught
third grade with Teach For America in
Houston, TX. Ater three years, he became a
program director or Teach For America in
New York City. Jabari joined AchievementFirst as a grade-level chair at Achievement
First East New York Elementary School in
Brooklyn, NY. He then became an academic
dean at Achievement First Bushwick
Elementary School. Next year, Jabari will be
a principal-in-residence to prepare to open
a new Achievement First school.
I came to Achievement First because I
ed to teach in a school that is very cons
on high expectations or studentsboth
in their academic and character skills
where these expectations are common
held among teachers, school leaders a
parents.
Derrick graduated rom Indiana Univers
with a B.A. in history. Ater graduation,
taught sixth grade with Teach For Ame
Phoenix, AZ. Two years later, he joined
Achievement First, teaching th and sixgrades at Elm City College Preparatory
Middle School in New Haven, CT. Derr
then spent a year teaching math in Ven
Upon his return, he decided to rejoin
Achievement First but to move rom
Connecticut to New York. He is a leade
ellow and teaches th and seventh gr
at Achievement First Endeavor Middle S
in Brooklyn, NY.

are always there or you, on a good day or

First have been the most valuable
learning and development support
or me because we learn dierent
ways to teach that we can start to
use in the classroom the very next

Friday Learning and Development
is a time or the whole school to step
back and reect. I really value having
the time built into the schedule each
week. It lets me know that Achieve-
ment First recognizes the importance
o constant learning and reection
or teachers as key levers to studentachievement.

teachers. They meet weekly to share best
practices and problem solve challenges.
The grade-level chair guides the team
toward its overall culture and achievement
goals.
On Network-Wide Proessional
Development Days, all teachers and
leaders in the network come together
or a day o learning in workshops with
master teachers and experts.
Middle School Content Days are anopportunity or teachers to collaborate,
share content-specic best practices
and learn new strategies with content
experts.

serve over 10,000 students in Brooklyn, NY, Bridgeport, CT,
