Please ensure your student’s Edsby ac- count is current, student schedules will be posted approximately two weeks before August 10 th . Schedules will be available for pick up on July 25 th , from 9am-11am. Families are encouraged to sign up for ap- pointments to see their guidance counselor for any needed correcons. Appointments are limited and are sched- uled on a first-come basis. All remaining requests can be best made through a request form available beginning July 25 th . Schedule correcons will be held in the media center on the following days: July 26 th : 8:00 a.m. – 11:00 a.m. (12 th only), 12:00 p.m. – 3:00 p.m. (11 th only) July 27 th : 8:00 a.m. – 10:00 a.m. (11 th and 12 th ), 12:00 p.m. – 3:00 p.m. (9 th and 10 th ) If you have quesons or concerns at any me of the year, please feel free to call me or my staff at 744-8040. August, 2017 Dear Hawks! It is with great excitement that we welcome students and teachers to Armwood for the new school year. Wheth-er you are a new student to the high school experience or a returning upperclassman, we have prepared to make this school year a successful and memorable one for you. The first day for students this year will be Thursday, August 10th. Students will begin by reporting to homeroom to get their class schedule for the first semester. Student Affairs Office (SAO) Information

The Student Affairs Office (SAO) is excited to welcome everyone to the 2017—2018 school year. Our role as admin-istrators in the student affairs office is to enhance the educational process for our students. As we prepare for school to begin, here are a few reminders: Attendance

All students are expected to be in their seat by 7:30 a.m. If a student is absent for the day, a parent must call the at-tendance line at 744-8040 option #1 and follow the voice prompts for leaving a message to excuse the absence by 9:00 a.m. Acceptable excuses for absences are covered in the student handbook available at http://www.sdhc.k12.fl.us/assets/pdf/studenthandbook.pdf. Parents will still receive a phone call whether excused or unexcused. Policy & Procedures

I. D. – All students will be required to wear their school I. D. badges throughout the school day. Rising 9th graders and all students new to AHS will receive an I.D. during the first month of school.

Emergency Cards – Students will receive emergency contact cards during the first week of school. This is the time to update any information that has changed. This information is used to verify persons sign-out your stu-dent, if the person is not listed your student may not be released.

Bus Transportation – Bus routes are available on the school district’s website. If your address has changed please contact District Transportation as soon as possible at (813) 740-3713 or through the school’s website www.sdhc.k12.fl.us and click on the transportation link.

Tardy Policy - Please note the following: 1 – 2 ; verbal warning 3 ; warning letter 4 ; parent contact 5 or more; student will be referred to SAO

Tardy Policy—Any student that arrives to campus between 7:30am-7:45am are to report to their 1st period teacher where they will be marked tardy.

Sign-In Procedures – Any student that enters campus after 7:45am with or without a parent escort must sign-in with SAO. Please be aware that when signing a student in for an excused sign-in, a parent or guardian must ac-company the student to SAO and give an excusable reason (this person must be listed on the emergency card and have proper identification). Please note that the number of sign-ins are 2 per quarter with a parent escort to be excused.

Sign-Out Procedures—Once a student arrives on campus, they may not leave without permission from an ad-ministrator or designee. If a student must leave early, the parent/guardian must make the request in person in SAO. A picture ID must be presented. Latest times to be signed out are as follows: Early Release 1:30, Pep Rally 1:45 and Regular Bell Schedule 2:30p.m unless it is an emergency. Please note that the number of sign-outs are 2 per quarter with a parent escort to be excused.

If a student is sick he/she must be seen by the school nurse in order for the sign-out to be marked excused. Parking

Student Parking—Students may park behind the school in their designated areas: - Seniors park behind the cafeteria

- Juniors and Sophomores park behind the 400 building - OJT and off-site Dual Enrollment participants will park behind the math wing

Parking Decals—are to be purchased in SAO during the designated time (10-12 graders only with valid driver’s license, must complete a student vehicle registration form)

Student drivers must posses a valid parking decal to sign-out with parent consent. If students are caught speeding or leaving campus without permission will receive consequences that may include surrendering their parking decal.

Dress Code Students’ rights and responsibilities regarding dress code are available in the student handbook on the school

district’s website at http://www.sdhc.k12.fl.us/

During breakfast and lunch only, students are able to use their mobile device. Students are not permitted to talk on their phones, or use loud speakers at any point during the day. The use of cell phones during lunch is a privilege

that can be taken away if abused.

IMPORTANT NOTICE TO ALL PARENTS AND STUDENTS

State Law requires that students, 14 to 18 years of age, who have not earned a high school diploma, who have 15 unexcused absences in any period of 90 calendar days, be ineligible for driving privileges. These absences do not have to be in succession. School districts are required by this legislation to report to the State of Florida Department of Highway Safety and Motor Vehicles (DHSMV), the names of any students who have accumulated 15 unexcused absences in any period of 90 calendar days. Effective January 5, 1999, students who accumulate 15 unexcused ab-sences in any period of 90 calendar days will be reported by the school to the DHSMV. The student who is report-ed will be informed by the DHSMV that his/her name has been received and he/she may lose the privilege to drive. Should a student be contacted by DHSMV with information, he/she may initiate a request for a hardship waiver or a request for reinstatement of driving privilege through the Office of Student Affairs. Students who fall under this initiative must surrender their parking decal and find alternative means of transportation, i.e., bus rider or parent drop off.

COMMUNITY AND STUDENT PORTALS

Parents and students will be able to access their online Report Cards and other helpful resources through the newly created COMMUNITY PORTAL located at https://community.sdhc.k12.fl.us. Each student will be given a unique pin they can access through the school. Through this portal, students and parents will also be able to access the district calendar, Choice/Magnet information, as well as other helpful resources at mySPOT. Students can also find other valuable information through the STUDENT PORTAL at https://students.sdhc.k12.fl.us. Student log in and password will be the same they use for Edsby and logging into all computers throughout campus. This password will be reset annually.

Cell Phone Policy During school hours cell phones and other electronic devices are to follow the BYOD

policy.

1st Violation: Phone confiscated. Stu-

2nd Violation: Phone confiscated. Phone may be picked up by parent from SAO. The phones will be given

back to the student on Friday (Unless a parent/guardian comes to the school

prior to).

Guidance Information

Our Assistant Principal of Curriculum, Shelby Savoy, will be available in the cafeteria during all 3 lunches on the 2nd and 3rd day of school. No phone calls or email messages requesting schedule changes, please! Due to the high volume of registrations during the first week, students will be called to see a counselor as soon as one is available to discuss their requests.

The Collegiate Academy provides students with an opportunity to earn an Associate of Arts degree (A.A.) through Hillsborough Community College in addition to their high school diploma. The students will take college courses, free of cost (including textbooks), during the school day on one of the Collegiate Academy High School campuses. The Academy will not only provide academic preparation but also other types of “college knowledge”, such as self-management of study routines and preparation for assessments; handling the pace and expectations of college courses, and strategic use of re-sources such as college advisors and ambassadors from local college campuses. Research shows that students who take dual enrollment classes are more likely to graduate from college.

We will be having schedule checks by grade level 2 weeks prior to students returning in August. We have found this to be very helpful in the past because it allows students to review their entire schedule at the beginning of the school year, thus ensuring that their schedules meet their academic needs from the very first day of school. Students are encouraged to come in to school on 7/25 from 9am-11am to set up an appointment with a counselor. If you have any further questions concerning scheduling, please contact the Guidance Office at 744-8040, ext. 237.

Club Information

If you are new to Armwood High School or a returning student, we encourage you to get involved in the

many opportunities that club participation offers. Armwood sponsors over 30 club and organizations.

Club participation is a friendly way to get integrated into school life and make new friends. Club rush is

scheduled for the month of September. More information will be announced once the school year be-

gins. Club information will be announced and posted on the morning show.

Sports Information

Armwood High School encourages all students to participate in athletics

and other extracurricular activities. Research shows that participation in

extracurricular activities positively impacts academic achievement. As

we begin the 2017-2018 school year, it is important that all parents and

students understand eligibility requirements for extracurricular partici-

pation. Please review the eligibility requirements included in this newsletter. If you have any

questions about student eligibility, please contact your student’s guidance counselor, coach or

our athletic department. Through educating yourself on all requirements, together we can

strive to assist every student in maintaining their eligibility and performing at a high level in

and out of the classroom.

NURSE INFORMATION Students must have a pass to see the nurse unless there is an emergency.

Only prescription medication shall be administered at school. Over-the-counter or sample medications must be

accompanied by orders from a physician or licensed health care provider. Cough drops will be treated as an

over-the-counter medication. Students may not carry over the counter medications at school. Medication must be in the prescription container with the date, dosage, name of drug, and student’s and physi-

cian’s licensed health care provider names clearly marked. Medication must remain in the container in which it

was originally dispensed. Most pharmacies will provide an extra empty labeled bottle for parents if requested

when the prescription is filled. A signed statement by the parent/guardian requesting the administration of medication must accom-

pany all medication. The official authorization form (SB 87034) must be returned to school within two (2) days following the initial

receipt of the medication.

New authorization forms are required every school year, or when any changes with the medical orders occur.

Armwood High School

Dear Parents, Teachers and Students, Welcome to a new school year at Armwood High School! We hope you had a fun-filled and refreshing summer. As the school year begins, our PTSA is off to an enthusiastic start and our commitment to you remains the same: to provide an enriching and enhanced educational experience for every student, family, Armwood administration and staff member, as well as to continue to develop relationships with our business partners in the community. This year we look forward to implementing some new programs and events for our students and families as well as continue to share those PTSA programs that are traditions here at Armwood. We invite you to join the Armwood High School PTSA. For PTSA to be effective and truly representative of the school we need everyone’s participation and the easiest way to get involved is by joining the PTSA. We have an all new lower price this year, all memberships are only $5.00 each. Our goal is to have every family join, along with 100% participation from our Armwood students and teachers! Please join our PTSA family and encourage your business and community members to join as well. Payment and membership forms can be dropped off in the Main Office. Finally, we encourage YOU to get involved and be a part of everything going on at Armwood. You are welcomed and encouraged to participate at whatever level you feel is right for your schedule. Whether you have 30 minutes or 30 hours, your ideas, time, and talents are truly needed.
