Personalised Learning

Your study timetable is designed around your interests and the level of learning you choose. You also choose your level of learning from extension to support level. Your choice.

Learning Packages These operate from year 7-10 and are made up of Achievement Objectives from 2/3 subjects e.g. Environment Watch is made up of Social Studies, Science and Health.

Habits of Minds “Habits” that help us in our decision-making in learning within and outside our learning.

Peer Wise and Peer Mentoring Older students (yrs 12 and 13) work with groups of younger students (yrs 7-9) to help them learn more about the school and help with any problems they might have.

House system: There are 6 Houses: Batten, Gordon, Mansfield, McStay, Traill, Williams, all named after famous New Zealand women.

A series of events beginning with Athletics in February and other events throughout the year which include winter and summer sports competitions and House Music and Drama.

“Old Girls” An affectionate name for SGHS students who have left school. There are 6 branches of SGHS Old Girls’ Associations throughout New Zealand: Invercargill, Gore, Alexandra, Dunedin, Timaru and Wellington.

The SGHS L.C.

The L.C. (aka The Learning Club) is a place where girls can learn alongside other students and receive help from their peers and teachers, in any aspect of their learning. The Learning Club runs on Tuesday at lunchtime and Wednesday after school.

Minds Alive

An optional learning package for students from years 8 to 10 where you study Global Issues that affect our changing world. Students have the opportunity to sit the University of Cambridge International Exam, Global Perspectives

The SGHS Ultranet

This is our Learning Management System that has a series of web pages for public access with school information and virtual classrooms where students, parents/whanau and teachers can share the learning of the day from school such as homework, resources to support learning, discussion, quizzes, collaborative work and collections of student work. Every student, teacher, whanau/parent will have a log in by the end of term 3 2012. http://southlandgirls.ultranet.school.nz.

On-line Learning Students in the senior school who have timetable clashes or wish to undertake courses of study we cannot offer, can opt in for a class through a video-conference or a computer based session. Students join classes all over the country and become part of the Virtual Learning Network in NZ. They email their teacher and learn independently at their own pace.

Digital Technology

Learning is not just about computers for everyday use. We now include Interactive Whiteboards, i-phones, net books, smart phones, flip cameras, YouTube clips, Smart TVs and many more multimedia devices. The world is changing and as a school we try and incorporate these tools into learning where we can. Digital Technology is also the name of one of the learning areas in our school, where you will be exposed to a range of multi-media programmes that you will learn to explore.

iEngage An opportunity for students in Year 7 and 8 to bring their homework or other learning tasks to a tutorial at lunchtime or after school to receive one on one help from a teacher

Personal Learning conference (PLC)

A 3 way discussion between student, parent/whanau and teacher to discuss progress, success and goals while constructing together a Personal Learning Plan (PLP) for each individual student. Parents are able to book PLC times online.

Learning Habits Part of our reporting system which involves a rubric used by all teachers and students to decide on next steps to becoming a successful independent learner.

Goal Setting All students are expected to set learning goals and action plans with each teacher, each semester. This is so students are future focused on their learning.

Cambridge Year 10 students in the extension Maths, English and Science classes study the Cambridge International Exam Syllabus. Students can opt to sit the world wide external examinations and gain an IGSCE qualification. This opportunity is there to challenge our Year 10’s to extend themselves before their NCEA years. Year 8 to 10 students can also do the Global Perspectives Syllabus and sit the exam through the Minds Alive Course

Enrolment at Southland Girls’ High School is determined by a Ministry of Education directed enrolment

scheme, details of which are available from the School Office.

Under this scheme, students will be enrolled if they live within the home zone described below: Unless otherwise stated the boundary is the street centre line. Proof of residence within the enrolment scheme zone may be required.

ENROLMENTS CLOSE ON 31 August 2012 If the number of out of zone applications exceeds the number of places available, students will be selected by

ballot. If a ballot is required it will be held on Friday 2nd

September. Parents will be informed of the outcome of

the ballot within three school days of the ballot being held.


Curriculum Search - Year 7 to 10 and Beyond

Future Thinking This programme is designed to develop a range of thinking strategies and skills in our students,

which will not only assist them with their study here at SGHS, but also with their future study and

careers. Examples of lessons include goal setting, research, time management, different types

of thinking, study skills, and strategies for generating and organising ideas.

Gifted and Talented Programmes Gifted and Talented students are identified by whanau/parents, class teachers and through self-

selection. Students can then choose to extend themselves by studying at a higher level or

undertaking a specialist area. Minds Alive is also available as a course that Year 8 students can

be selected for, and Year 9 and 10 students can opt into.

The programme uses the University of Cambridge International Examination Syllabus in Global

Perspectives. Students are given the opportunity to enquire into and reflect on the accelerating

changes in the world that impact on us. The emphasis is on extending the skills and thinking

that active citizens and leaders of the future will need. Year 7 students, like Year 8 students, are

extended through their Inquiry based Learning Packages. Students are encouraged to take

ideas further into individual actions. We offer opportunities to join a number of workshops during

the year, competitions, spelling, writing, mathematics and computing examinations also in

International forums.

Qualifications – NCEA NCEA is offered to all students. The Level 1, 2 and 3 certificates are usually studied for all years

11, 12 and 13. However, some of our students choose to accelerate and sit NCEA earlier.

Cambridge

Cambridge IGCSE is offered to the extension band of English, Mathematics and Science at year

10. It is seen as preparation for Level 1 NCEA, giving the grounding in thinking and content to

allow students to reach their personal excellence. Challenging your learning and extending your

potential can be a part of your Year 10 year. Students in the extension Year 10 English, Science

and Maths classes study the Cambridge International Examination Syllabus for 14-16 year olds

all over the world.

Literacy A whole school planned initiative for every student to use reading, research and writing material

more effectively in order to achieve their best.

Numeracy The development of number and thinking strategies to improve mathematical learning through

years 7 to 10.

promoted.

significantly better than students at similar schools and at comparable levels to higher decile schools. A

higher proportion of students who enter the school at Year 9 go on to complete Levels 1 and 2

Southland Girls’ High School results are higher in all cases than the National average and better than

other Decile 5 schools.

At Southland Girls’ High School there are ‘seamless pathways’. Students are expected and

We operate a semester system like a University which allows students to work at different levels and

change their subjects at the end of each semester.
