    When tougher emissions regula-

tions went into effect in 2002,

    other engine makers turned

    to a compromise: Cooled-EGR

    (Exhaust Gas Recirculation)

    technology that recycles exhaust

back through the engine in an

    attempt to reduce emissions.

    But Caterpillar engineers didnt

    stop there. Instead, we continued

to search for a better answera

    long term solution that would

provide the same kind of reliability,

    durability, fuel economy and

    resale value Cat customers have

    always counted on.

    After intensive lab testing and

    millions of miles of real-world,

on the road proof, we discovered

    the answer: ACERT technology,

    an innovative systems solution

    that derives from proven Cat

    components and technology.

    Its a revolution through evolu-

tion that not only meets todays

    clean air regulations, but also

    establishes the building blocks

    for attaining tomorrows more

    stringent standards. Most

    importantly, ACERT technology

    Revolution Through Evolution

    provides Cat customers with all

    of the reliability, durability and

    fuel economy Cat engines are

    renowned for providing.

    ACERT technology is C aterpillars

    innovative, long-term solution for

    generating Pure Powerand pure

    customer value. The following

    pages detail how this break-

    through technology combines four

    existing engine systems into a

    single, unparalleled success.

Minimizing exhaust emissions andmaximizing fuel economy requiresthe most complete combustion pos-sible. So Caterpillar engines withACERT technology employ time-test-ed HEUI and MEUI (Mechanicallyactivated, Electronically controlledUnit Injection) fuel systems.

    Both of these systems are

designed and built by Caterpillar. This proprietary technology allowsus to fine tune each fuel systemfor each unique engineand yourapplication.

Increasing Fuel EconomyThe C7 and C9 engines feature ourproven HEUI fuel system, while theC11, C13 and C15 feature the CatMEUI fuel system. Both the HEUIand MEUI systems are designed toprovide a patented split injection

Improved air management, a basicbuilding block of ACERT technology,is also the most visible of its fourintegrated systems. Caterpillarheavy duty engines with ACERTtechnology employ series tur-bochargers to force more cool, clean air into the combustionchambernot the recycled exhaust

gas of cooled-EGR technology. And Cat engines with ACERTtechnology use proven turbotechnology, not the complicatedVariable Geometry Turbochargercomponents employed by someother engine manufacturers.

    Working together in series, the

fuel delivery to the combustionchamber, reducing emissions andoptimizing fuel economy.

With split injection, a minute amountof fuel is injected at the beginning ofcombustion. This is the pilot injection.A millisecond later, during combus-tion, a larger volume of fuel is usedas the main injection. Then a post

injection, another smaller amount offuel, completes the cycle. Howmuch fuel is injected at each phaseis determined by advanced Catelectronics.

Cutting Emissions at the SourceThe split fuel injection strategy incor-porated into ACERT technologylowers peak cylinder temperatures, allowing fuel to burn more completely. This translates to not only lower emis-sions, but also superior fuel economy.

    Advanced Fuel Systems

turbos turn slower, resulting inincreased turbo component life. This turbocharger arrangementimproves engine response whilelowering oxides of nitrogen andincreasing fuel economy.

Controlling Air VolumeACERT technology is also able to

control the air volume required atvarious engine loads and speeds, resulting in more complete combus-tion and better fuel economy. This isaccomplished through variable valveactuation. Inside the engine, thisprocess allows precise control ofvalve actuation complementary tocamshaft actuation. Valve position

Improved Air System Managementis changed based on enginedemands, as monitored byadvanced Cat electronics.

Only the Cat air managementsystem with Cat electronics makevariable valve actuation possible, because it utilizes technology fromour proprietary HEUI fuel systemand our extensive knowledge of

    hydraulics.

Looking to the FutureFor C11 and C13 engines, thevariable valve actuation designpermits control of an integralcompression brake. By 2004this integral compressionbrake will be optional in allCat heavy duty engines.

heart of ACERT technology isombustion process, then theof this breakthrough systems

ing Operating Conditionsthe system senses the

    nes ever-changing operating

While the combustion processfunctions to cut oxides of nitrogen(NOx), its only part of the story.Regulated exhaust emissions alsoinclude particulates, hydrocarbonsand carbon monoxide. So a simple, effective exhaust aftertreatmentcompletes the story of ACERTtechnology: the Caterpillar DieselOxidation Catalyst (DOC).

Counting on Proven ComponentsProven reliable over time, thestainless steel Cat DOC has nomoving parts, requires no mainte-nance, and is literally designed tolast as long as the engine itself. Infact, over the past decade morethan 120,000 engines have beenmanufactured utilizing this uniqueaftertreatment systemand haveshown virtually no reliability issues.

Located in the exhaust system, theDOC consists of a honeycomb-likestructure covered by a chemicalcoating that acts as a catalyst. Ashydrocarbons, carbon monoxide andparticulate exhaust emissions passthrough the DOC and come intocontact with the catalyst, they arechemically converted into carbondioxide and water vaporharmlesssubstances that are subsequentlypassed on out of the exhaust system.

vanced Engine Electronicsconditions. Thenin much thesame way as the engine automati-cally adapts to airflow needs byincreasing or decreasingturbocharger boostthe electroniccontrol module sends out signalsthat variable valve actuators and fuelinjectors convert into mechanicalresponses.

Integrating All ComponentsThe result: precise and efficientintegration of engine components

Taking the Final StepSimply put, Cats proven DOCaftertreatment system represents elegant engineering at its best. Its the final step that allows engineswith ACERT technology to meettodays tough emissions standards.

Its also one more example of howyou can count on Cat to come upwith solutions that work in the realworld, systems that work togetherwell, and products that provide max-imum value for the long haul.

under any operating conditions. This provides greater flexibility tooptimize power, fuel economy, andemissions.

Advanced Cat electronics is thekey to making the four separatesystems of ACERT technology workas an efficient unit. And that, in turn,is the key to better performanceand value to your bottom line.
