WELCOME

A new year brings with it a fresh zeal and opportunity to up-skill for a new career, take up a new hobby, or to explore your love of learning.

We have refreshed our course offerings to enable you to improve your career prospects (pages 3-5). You might consider taking the Certificate IV in Training and Assessment, for example. This qualification transforms your industry experience so that you can professionally teach others who are looking to enter your specialised field. Give us a call (02 6622 1903) to find out more and if this applies to your profession.

If you are looking to recover and relax after the busy Christmas holidays we have an excellent range of courses to help you do just that: Tai Chi, Yoga, Me Time, Meditation and the innovative Mindfulness course (all feature on page 18).

For some of you, the New Year may mean it is time to gain a greater understanding of the brave new world that is social media and how it might help your small business. Local Lismore trainer, Geof Webb, is on board with ACE Community Colleges this term to hold ‘Introduction to Social Media: Tools for Business’ (page 9) which will teach you how to incorporate social media into your marketing strategy.

ACE Community Colleges is delighted to announce that a new community college is now open in Casino and we look forward to providing relevant and engaging courses and education to the Casino community. We will be holding an official opening in February (follow us on our Facebook page for event details: facebook.com/AceCommunityColleges) so please do come along if you are free, we would love to see you.

Enjoy perusing through our new term course guide and please don’t hesitate to give us a call if you would like to have a chat about the best adult education path for you. Don’t forget we have a weekly payment plan if you would like to up-skill but can’t afford to pay it all upfront. We also offer a discount if you enrol early.

Wishing you a prosperous new year from the entire ACE Community College team!

Yours faithfully, Kerry Johnson

ABORIGINAL PROGRAMS

ABORIGINAL DRIVER TRAININGACE Community Colleges has had strong links with the Aboriginal Community for over 10 years. We are dedicated to improving outcomes for Aboriginal people through educational programs, in particular through assisting Aboriginal people to gain their driving licence opening the door to many new opportunities. We are currently delivering Aboriginal Driver Education to the following communities: Box Ridge Community Coraki, Cabbage Tree Island Community, Ballina Community, Byron Bay Community, Jubullum Village Tabulam, Lismore area. This Aboriginal Driver Training Program is funded by Transport NSW and is exclusively for Aboriginal people. Eligibility criteria applies. Our Program Co-ordinator links with the Aboriginal Communities to address educational and training needs by closely working with the Elders of all the communities where training has commenced and also with the Land Councils that service the communities. We currently have an 85% success rate for students taking their driving test for the first time with over 80 people gaining their licences this year alone.

Our Work with Communities

BUS LICENCESACE has licensed over 13 Aboriginal bus drivers during the past year in partnership with both Lismore City Council and Lismore Community Transport. We have helped enable community members to drive their own buses to sports events and cultural activities as well as regular bus trips to towns and other activities.

Licensing involves literacy and numeracy training to pass the driver knowledge test which is conducted by ACE’s General Education Unit. We then partner with our current local heavy vehicle training assessors who facilitate hands on training so that students are comfortable with their large vehicles on the road.

WORK READINESSACE works in partnership with many Aboriginal communities to enable a stronger skills base for running community land councils and offices. We train in computer skills as well as basic literacy and work based skills to ensure compliance and efficiency is reached for external funding obligations.

Please contact Jan Levy for more information: E: [email protected] T: 02 6621 6777

ABORIGINAL CULTURAL ARTACE offers courses in Aboriginal Cultural Art on the remote communities in the Northern Rivers Area to help students gain additional professional art skills which enables them to participate in exhibitions both locally and nationally. In 2013, ACE promoted Bunarm Bologaman Wahl Bundjalung (Brothers coming together of the Bundjalung Nation): an exciting exhibition held at Redfern in Sydney, of new works by eight leading Bundjalung artists.

6

BALUNDAACE delivers driver training to residents of the Balunda facility, west of Tabulum, to assist them with the attainment of driving licences. This can help when students are wanting to participate in work opportunities as well as other community engagements.
