ACDelco WIP is an online parts ordering system that connects independentservice centers (ISCs) directly to an ACDelco supplier. The system displays real-timepricing and availability from the suppliers inventory, which makes ordering partsquick and easy. Because it is Internet based, WIP boosts efficiency by eliminatingtime spent holding on the phone to contact suppliers, and its available 24/7, soparts ordering can be completed according to the service centers schedule.

WIP contains automotive parts for all makes and models, based on the inventoryof the local ACDelco supplier. The system features easy-to-use search functions byyear, make, model, and engine, which enables users to drill down by vehicle optionsand build to locate the exact parts needed. WIP also displays related parts (likehoses for radiators) and labor rates all in one location.

In addition to finding the right parts, WIP contains exclusive features not availablein any other parts ordering system that make it the best choice for both suppliersand service centers.

Based on the frequency of the noise, traditional methods of damping brake calipernoise may not be enough to diminish thenoise. ACDelcos easy-to-install low-frequen-cy dampeners contain an energy absorbingmaterial that targets 02,000 Hz vibrations

to help reduce noise, absorb sound andenergy, and muffle squeals and groans.

In most cases, the low-frequency damp-eners can be installed in less than 90seconds. The dampener and new lock boltreplace an existing brake caliper lock bolt.

When installing a dampener, first deter-mine which side of the caliper has the most clearance. Next, replace the existinglock bolt with the new dampener lock bolt and tighten to specification. The low-frequency dampener is then threaded onto the lock bolt. A protective plastic cap isincluded.

The low-frequency dampeners come with an ACDelco 12-month/unlimited milewarranty (parts only).

ACDelco oil filters PF48 (GM partnumber 89017524) and the Durapackversion, PF48F (GM part number19167894) are transitioning to a newdesign that offers improved perfor-

mance. The new part numbers are:PF48E (GM part number 19303975)and PF48F (GM part number19303974). This will be a rollingchange and the old version will not beavailable once stock is depleted.

The redesigned PF48E filter perfor-mance improvement relates to the relief valve design. The PF48E has a compres-sion spring loaded nylon poppet that outperforms the current valve design.

In addition, the collapse strength of the filer has been increased by 25 percentdue to the perfectly round nylon core. The filter media also is no longer potted inadhesive, which blocked filtration area.

    Understanding Fastener TighteningSpecifications

The desired result of tightening afastener is to obtain a proper clampingforce between the parts. The clamp-ing force prevents loosening when thevehicle is in use and external forces acton the clamped parts.

All fasteners have a specified torque. The method used for a particular appli-cation is determined by engineers andspecified in the appropriate ServiceInformation. It is necessary to apply thefastener torque to the specific fasteneridentified. Applying torque to the mat-ing fastener can damage the fastener, mating components, or provide insuf-ficient clamp load. For example, wheninstalling the adjust link on the 2014Chevrolet Corvette rear suspension, theService Information calls for tighteningthe adjust link nut to 70 Nm (52 lb. ft.),

    not the cam bolt.

There are three differentmethods for the specifica-tion of tightening fasten-ers: Torque (T), TorquePlus Angle (TA), andTorque Plus Angle to Yield(TAY). Torque Plus Angle toYield (TAY) is sometimesreferred to Torque To Yield(TTY).

A fastener specificationof Torque Plus Angle (TA)

for example, 30 Nm(22 lb. ft.) + 120 degrees has more clampingforce than a fastener speci-fication of Torque (T) forexample, 30 Nm (22 lb. ft). A fastenerspecification of Torque Plus Angle toYield (TAY) has more clamping forcethan a fastener specification of TorquePlus Angle (TA).

    Torque (T)

A fastener with a Torque (T)specification can be tightened with a

conventional torque wrench. Generally, externally threaded fasteners (bolts, screws, studs) tightened to this speci-fication method can be re-used, unlessotherwise specified in the ServiceInformation.

    Torque Plus Angle (TA)

A fastener with a Torque Plus Angle(TA) specification must be tightenedfirst to the torque part of the specifica-tion and then must be tightened furtherby the addition of the specified angle. The angle must be applied relative

to the mating fastener, if present, orrelative to the mating surface. A backupwrench must be used, if required, toprevent the rotation of the mating fas-tener while the angle is added to thefastener with the Torque Plus Angle

(TA) specification. Generally, externallythreaded fasteners tightened to thisspecification method can be reused, unless otherwise specified in theService Information.

Torque Plus Angle to Yield (TAY)

A fastener with a Torque PlusAngle to Yield specification (TAY) istightened in the same way as thefastener with the Torque Plus Angle(TA) specification.

The difference between a TorquePlus Angle (TA) specification and aTorque Plus Angle to Yield (TAY) speci-

fication is the tighteningresults in permanentdeformation of theexternally threadedfastener. Externallythreaded fasteners tight-ened to this specificationmethod must not bereused and must alwaysbe replaced if loosened.

    Tightening in Stages

    Generally, Service

Information specifies afastener tightening speci-fication in stages. Anindividual fastener with aTorque (T) specification

is tightened to the specified torque inone pass.

For Torque Plus Angle (TA) andTorque Plus Angle to Yield (TAY) speci-fication fasteners, the fasteners aretightened in stages. All the fastenersare tightened to a torque specificationon the first pass. Next, they receiveanother tightening to a specified angle(in degrees) on the second pass.Sometimes, more than two passes arerequired. Always refer to the appro-priate Service Information for propertightening in stages.

On applications with more than onefastener, such as wheel nuts or cylinderhead bolts, the fasteners should betightened to specification by alternat-ing between the fasteners to ensurethe parts are not distorted and that thefasteners are torqued evenly. Oncea specified minimum of torque has

been achieved for each bolt, the boltsshould be tightened completely tospecification.

    Reusing the Fastener

    Think of an externally threaded

fastener (bolt, screw or stud) as aspring. As a Torque (T) or TorquePlus Angle (TA) tightening specifica-tion is applied, the spring (externallythreaded fastener) is stretched. Witha Torque (T) or Torque Plus Angle (TA)tightening specification, the springreturns to its original length (elasticallystretched) when loosened. In the caseof a Torque Plus Angle to Yield (TAY)tightening specification, the spring isoverstretched (plastically deformed) anddoes not return to its original length. For this reason, the Torque Plus Angle

to Yield (TAY) tightening specificationrequires the externally threaded fas-tener to always be replaced.

In GM Service Information, thefollowing warning will be shown whena Torque Plus Angle to Yield (TAY)specification fastener is used:

    Torque-to-Yield Fastener Warning(2406051)

Caution: This vehicle is equippedwith torque-to-yield or single usefasteners. Install a NEW torque-to-yield or single use fastener when

installing this component. Failure toreplace the torque-to-yield or singleuse fastener could cause damage tothe vehicle or component.

There is no effect to the object inwhich the externally threaded fasteneris threaded. It can be either a nut or athreaded hole in a component. If a nutis present, it can be reused.

Why Do Engineers Specify TA orTAY Torque Specifications?

With the added benefit of increasedclamping force, a smaller fastener canbe used when a Torque Plus Angle (TA)or Torque Plus Angle to Yield (TAY)tightening specification is quantified. For example, an M12 size bolt with aTorque Plus Angle to Yield (TAY) speci-fication can be used in place of an M16size bolt with a Torque (T) specification. The use of Torque Plus Angle (TA) andTorque Plus Angle to Yield (TAY) speci-fications result in a reduction in thevehicle weight and, therefore, improvedfuel economy.

    Thanks to Jonathan Johnson

    TAY specification fastenersrequire bolt replacement.

To prevent a steering gear squeak noise on 2008-2012Buick Enclave, 2009-2012 Chevrolet Traverse, 2007-2012 GMAcadia, and 2007-2010 Saturn Outlook models, built prior toJuly 1, 2011, GM recommends that the power steering fluid

    changed to DEXRON

-VI automatic transmission fluid when steering gear assembly is replaced for any reason.

The originalcause of thesqueak noisemay be dueto insufficientgrease in thepinion shaftseal. The pinionshaft seal topinion shaftinterface andlack of lubrica-

tion may gen-erate a noise. This noise origi-nates in thegear but maysound like it iscoming fromthe steeringcolumn area. The steering gear assembly should not be replaced for thissqueak noise condition. For the squeak noise, only the steergear housing should be replaced and the power steering system should be refilled with DEXRON-VI. The DEXRON-VI fluioffers the permanent correction for the squeak noise.

In addition to the squeak noise correction, the recommendtion to convert the power steering fluid to DEXRON-VI fluid ifor gear replacements only and not for repairs to other systecomponents, such as the pump, cooler or hoses.

A tag identifying that the vehicle has been converted toDEXRON-VI should be installed on the power steering reservfiller neck and secured with the cap.

If the power steering system on these vehicles has theoriginal fluid, the system should be flushed and refilled withDEXRON-VI. Due to the interface between the pinion shaft sand the fluid, it is critical to ensure that no old fluid comes incontact with the new seal. Be sure to thoroughly flush all oldfluid from the system prior to installing the new steering gea

assembly or housing. When changing the fluid, raise the vehicle until the wheels

are approximately 24 inches off the ground. Disconnect thepower steering fluid reservoir inlet hose from the powersteering fluid reservoir and plug the power steering fluid res-ervoir inlet port. With the key ON and the engine OFF, turnthe steering wheel fully to the left and to the right while anassistant maintains the minimum fluid level in the reservoirusing DEXRON-VI fluid. Continue until the fluid from the powsteering fluid reservoir inlet hose runs red. This may require to three quarts (3 L) of DEXRON-VI fluid.

    Using an AngleMeter

An angle meter, such as the J-45059 or J-45059-AAngle Meter, is used to ensure proper fastener tightnesswhen tightening fasteners with a Torque Plus Angle (TA)and Torque Plus Angle to Yield (TAY) specification. Theseangle meters are designed for use with standard 3/8-inchor 1/2-inch square drive extensions, ratchets, or breaker

bar handles, or for use witha 1/2-inch square driveclick style torque wrench, approximately 1 inch to1-1/4 inches (25 to 31 mm)in diameter.

The fastener mustalready be tightened tothe specified initial torquebefore applying the anglespecification.

The desired angle valuecan be set from 0199

    degrees.When ready to measure

angle using the J-45059-AAngle Meter, apply a slightforce in the required direc-tion of rotation to eliminatefree-play in the socket, extension, and driver. Do not turnthe bolt at this time.

With free-play eliminated, press the Start button, andthe meter will display WAIT, followed by TURN. WhenTURN is displayed, the meter is zeroed. Turn the driveruntil the desired angle is reached. While the meter isturned, a yellow bar is displayed that gets longer asthe set angle is neared. Within 510 degrees of the setangle, the end of the yellow bar will turn red, and themeter will beep and flash when the angle is reached.

The J-45059-A Angle Meter can be used on a ratchethandle when the fastener is in an area with limitedaccess. To usethis feature, after the meteris zeroed, andthe ratchet isbeing turned, stop turningmomentarily. The ratchet

can be turnedback, but thedisplayed anglewill not change. At the end ofthe back-swing,stop momentarily again, and the meter will continue toincrease the angle measured from this ratcheted point.

The J-45059-A Angle Meter requires a AA battery. The J-45059 Angle Meter uses two #CR-2032 batteries. To replace the batteries, separate the front case fromthe back.

    Front Strut Noise

2008-2014 Chevrolet Captiva Sport;2010-2014 Chevrolet Equinox, GMCTerrain; and 2008-2010 Saturn VUE

A pop-ping or clunknoise com-ing from thefront of thevehicle maybe heardduring smallto mediumsuspensiontravel. This

conditionmay be dueto the insidediameterof the frontstrut jouncebumper rubbing against the piston rodof the strut, creating a slip-stick condi-tion. To correct this condition, applygrease to the top and bottom of thestrut shaft.

With the vehicle raised on a framelift-type hoist, pull the dust shield/jounce bumper assembly out of the

strut top mount cup and slide it downto expose the top portion of the strutshaft. Apply grease, GM P/N 12345579(in Canada, 10953481), around thecircumference of the strut shaft that isexposed.

Unseat the bottom of the dust shieldfrom the strut and expose the bottomportion of the strut shaft. Apply thegrease around the circumference of thestrut shaft that is exposed.

Slide the dust shield/jounce bumperassembly down and reattach the bot-

tom to the strut. Push the top of thedust shield/jounce bumper assemblyup into the top mount cup as far aspossible by hand. The assembly willfully seat once the vehicle is on theground and the suspension is allowedto compress.

    Diesel Particulate FilterMessage

2014-2015 Chevrolet Cruze equippedwith the 2.0L Clean Turbo DieselEngine

The Driver Information Centermessages Diesel Partic Filter Is

Full Continue Driving and DieselPartic Filter Is Full Continued DrivingMandatory may be displayed onvehicles equipped with the dieselengine (RPO LUZ). DTC P2463 (DieselParticulate Filter Soot Accumulation)also may be set. When DTC P2463sets, the ECM commands the enginecontrol system to operate in ReducedEngine Power.

The messages indicate that a DieselParticulate Filter (DPF) cleaning, orregeneration, is required, based onengine run time, fuel consumed and

distance traveled since the last DPFcleaning.

The DPF system filters soot particlesout of the exhaust gases. When theECM determines that a specific amountof soot has collected in the DPF, it willlook for all of the conditions that mustbe met in order to initiate a regenera-tion. This self-cleaning function runsautomatically when the conditions aremet and may take up to 25 minutes, without any notification to the driver. The DPF is cleaned by periodicallyburning off the soot particles at hightemperature. Fuel consumption may behigher during this self-cleaning period.

Under certain driving conditions, such as short distances, stop and godriving or extended idling, the systemmay not be able to clean itself auto-matically, eventually causing the DriverInformation Center messages to bedisplayed. If the DPF is not cleanedas required, the Engine Power IsReduced message will display. Whenthis occurs, self cleaning of the DPFis no longer possible and service will

be necessary. Refer to the appropriateService Information for DTC P2463 andfollow the diagnostic procedure.
