The game of Chess is one of attack and defense. A game where the end result always justifies the means. A game where the sweet taste of victory causes the agony of defeat.

By experiencing these processes the members of the Chess Club have organized to promote the game of Chess through various social activities. The club is also concerned with stimulating interest and increasing skill in the game of Chess through intense, congenial play. The Chess Club is primarily a student organization but membership is open to any interested individual of the Widener College Family.

PEER COUNSEUNG It is frequently asked, "What

is a peer counselor?" Peer counseling is helping one to discover and to accept themselves, others and their surroundings. It also serves to give guidance and support that will be invaluable in striving toward goals and dealing with the outcome be it success or failure.

The program's basis is dermed by the word P-I-E-S, the Physical, Intellectual, Emotional and Social development of the individual. The prospective peer counselor undergoes an extensive training and follow-up program. Listening, communicating, responding and program development skills are emphasized in order to make the peer counselor a facilitative helper.

rlack Row (L-R): Lora Hamilton (Senior Peer Counselor), Timothy Yancey, Michelle Bunkley, Patricia Fountain, Howard Chambers

The counselor helps students identify the problem and the goal, as well as, plotting the steps toward that goal. Alternative courses of action are considered based on the students' assessment of his/her priorities. Thus, the helping experience is geared toward making the student functionally independent.

Widener's Rugby Club got its start this past fall and has since been accepted as members of the Eastern Pennsylvania Rugby Union. Though the club had a slow start it didn't take long for "Rugby Fever" to sneak up on many unsuspecting students. The spring brought the club several new menbers so it appears the Rugby Club has joined the ranks as one of Widener's many extracurricular activities.
