Accountants Care Campaign successfully raised over $1 million We would like to thank all members and friends of the accountancy profession for their support of the Accountants Care Campaign jointly organised by the Society, ACCA (Hong Kong) and CPA Australia (Hong Kong). The Society's charitable fund account received a total of one million Hong Kong dollars from firms and individuals whereas the ACCA's charitable fund account received a total of $110,000 from its members. While Hong Kong has been officially declared free of Sars by the World Health Organisation, medical experts here and overseas have commented that the Sars infection might recur towards the end of the year. There is thus a continued need to develop a preventive regime through medical research, including the anti-viral and immuno-stimulating effects of Chinese medicine against Sars. The Society has decided to donate $600,000 to the Institute of Chinese Medicine, the Chinese University of Hong Kong (ICM, CUHK). Together with the earlier contribution of $150,000, the Society has donated a total of $750,000 to the ICM, CUHK, and will be offered a naming right of one of its laboratories. Another donation of $150,000 from the Society will go to the Coalition of Professional Services Atypical Pneumonia Charitable Trust. As a founding member of the Coalition, the Society has pledged to support this donation campaign alongside with the other professional bodies. Together with ACCA (Hong Kong) and CPA Australia (Hong Kong), the Society has, on the recommendation of the Hong Kong Council of Social Service, identified five agencies worthy of support as they are in need of protective equipment for their community care workers who have to work with elderly persons having respiratory infections. A total of $200,000 will be donated to the Association for Engineering and Medical Volunteer Services, Mongkok Kaifong Association Chan Hing Social Service Centre, Evangelical Lutheran Church Social Service - Hong Kong, Hong Kong Evangelical Church Social Service Ltd. and S.K.H. Lady MacLehose Centre. In addition, $130,000 will be donated to a joint research project of the Hong Kong Council of Social Service and the Centre on Ageing, the University of Hong Kong. This research will assess the impact of the Sars outbreak among elderly people with a view to finding ways and means to improve future services to such patients as they recover. This donation is also the joint effort of the three accountancy bodies.
