Under the theme “Leveraging Capabilities and Synergies for Banking Excellence,” we pursued distinctive initiatives in FY 2016-2017, and worked hard to make it another trailblazing year for BAIPHIL. My colleagues, it is my honor to report to you the results of our operations for FY2016-2017. A. ACTIVE ROLL-OUT OF TRAINING SEMINARS Our course committees and our secretariat have been very busy throughout the

year, rolling out the training seminars on various topics. For this year, please note that we set a higher target so we can cover expected additional expenses to maintain our new office. I am pleased to report that as of June 30, 2017, we have exceeded our targets, as follows:

TARGET ACTUAL % vs TARGET

No. of runs 88 91 103.4%

No. of participants 4,400 4,453 101.2%

Net support generation P5.063M P6.425M 126.9%

With all results exceeding set targets, establishing an all-time record breaking performance, indeed, let us celebrate this big achievement. At the same time, let us continue to improve our “way of doing things around BAIPHIL” to keep the momentum.

Accomplishment Report FY 2016-2017

B. NEW AND RESPONSIVE TRAINING PROGRAMS New course offerings - In keeping with BAIPHIL’s vision to pursue banking excellence, we delivered new training courses that

were matched with high-caliber resource persons, particularly from the BSP and from our ranks, to support the evolving learning needs of the banking industry. This year we have added twenty (20) new course offerings, 15 or 75% of which are technical programs across all courses, while the remaining 5 or 25% are soft skills programs.

Revival of provincial training - We extended our reach far beyond our homefront in Metro Manila to far-flung corners of the Visayas Region, leveraging BAIPHIL’s value in Cebu City as we held the Seminar on BSP Cir. 706 as Amended by BSP Cir. 950, AMLA Law, and AML Risk Rating System on June 9, 2017 at the Waterfront Cebu City Hotel and Casino, with 65 participants in attendance. The Cebu AMLA run has signaled the revival of conducting training programs outside Metro Manila where there is need for training, after two years of BAIPHIL’s being inactive in the region. Already, plans are afoot for the conduct of the next training programs: Related Party Transactions and Compliance to Operational Risk Management Guidelines, with SMEs from the BSP.

C. STRONGER TRAINING AND EDUCATION FRAMEWORK Learning partnerships pursued - We have extended our service beyond the development and delivery of training programs

by endeavoring to become a strategic and learning partner not only to member banks but also to non-member banks and other institutions, moving beyond the training mindset and thinking like a business partner wearing the hat of a performance enhancement consultant.

PRC Accreditation obtained – Our application for Accreditation of BAIPHIL as CPD Provider with Professional Regulation

Commission (PRC) has been approved recently. With this accreditation, member-banks can now take advantage of the BAIPHIL programs and courses to be accredited with the PRC, for the continuing professional education of their employees and/or compilers of financial statements, as required by the Board of Accountancy (BOA).

Development of certification course started - Development of certification courses through collaboration with SMEs and our

learning partners was vigorously pursued this year with the Finance and Audit Course Committee at the forefront, in close collaboration with the Institute of Internal Auditors Philippines. Two major programs that we are currently being pursued are the Certification Program for Finance Professionals and Certification Program for Bank Auditors.

In particular, we have had consultations and dialogues with two banks that resulted in stronger partnership and more synergy through managed expectations and outcomes. Our learning conversations with one bank resulted in identification of measures to enhance the operational efficiency in the collection of BAIPHIL’s accounts receivables. Also, our dialogues with them provided us a better understanding not only of their internal training process on seminar registration and payment of fees but also of their priorities and initiatives that enabled us to continue to align and support their training needs. Rather than engaging in a series of disconnected learning programs, they are now looking at using a methodical process to link their training programs and objectives to those of BAIPHIL for possible learning alliances. The next step is to obtain accreditation with PRC of BAIPHIL Finance courses. Preparations are now underway with the Finance and Audit Course Committee spearheading this. The first program to be submitted for accreditation (Seminar on Introduction to Financial Regulatory Reporting and Financial Control Standards), had already been designed, developed and implemented. We are now preparing the documents to be submitted to the PRC.

BAIPHIL training room launched – We completed the acquisition of training tables for our training room at our office, making it fully operational and available for small group learning sessions. We launched the first training session there - Training the Bank Trainers- last May 12 & 13, 2017, with 10 participants from rural banks, foreign banks, thrift and development banks.

D. STEADY MEMBERSHIP Our membership has been steady during year, allowing us to gain two (2) new institutional members – PNB Savings Bank

and GM Bank of Luzon Inc. while associate members contracted slightly by five (5) - net. E. EXPANDED NETWORK OF INSTITUTIONAL PARTNERSHIPS AND ALLIANCES Proactive alliances/partnerships with member and non-member or non-organizations - We have extended our reach through

building proactive alliances and partnerships not only with our member banks but also with other organizations in other industries, including non-banking institutions. Under this partnership, training courses are delivered exclusively for the particular institution. During the year, we successfully conducted training partnerships with fourteen (14) institutions, 6 of which were newly established this year.

Potential partnership with learning institutes overseas - Also in the works are our potential partnerships with the Retail Banking Academy and ANZ Institute which are based in UK and Malaysia, respectably. A series of in-depth discussions have already been held with said organizations to assess possible alternative partnerships such as off-the-shelf option, customized option with co-branding, and blended learning.

F. SUSTAINED RELATIONSHIPS WITH BANKING INSTITUTIONS IN THE ASEAN REGION Participation in ASEAN Banking Conference – We participated in the ASEAN Banking Conference/ASEAN Banking Council

Meeting held on November 27-28, 2016 in Bangkok, Thailand, as part of Philippine contingent headed by the Bankers Association of the Philippines. We also took part in the Association of Asia Pacific Banking Institute (APABI) Conference on September 22 -23, 2016 in Kathmandu, Nepal, where we established important contacts with colleagues across the region for potential partnerships. These activities enabled us to have a better and deeper understanding of the banking education landscape in APAC region and the ASEAN, and benchmark with the best in the region.

Promotion of Philippine Banking in cooperation with other organizations, here and abroad (TABF, PCCI) - We participated in

the meeting hosted by the Philippine Chamber of Commerce and Industry on September 20, 2016 for the 18 delegates from Taiwan Academy of Banking and Finance (TABF). The meeting afforded us the opportunity to share our insights on Philippine banking industry as well as discuss potential areas for partnership and cooperation.

One such opportunity that we could realize this year is the TABF invitation to BAIPHIL for a SME as Trainer in their 2017 International Talent Development Program on June 30, 2017. BAIPHIL Past Pres. Carmelita R. Araneta has taken the prestigious and challenging role to be part of the Program. We also sent two BAIPHIL representatives: FVP Irene DL. Arroyo and Director Racquel B. Mañago to Mongolia for a study tour organized by the International Finance Corporation (IFC) and hosted by the Mongolian Banking Association on June 15 -17, 2017. The study tour focused on Environmental and Social Risk Management (ESRM).

G. ENHANCED COMMUNICATION AMONG MEMBERS AND PARTNERS Continuous communication with members through GMMs - We continued to hold the monthly general membership

meetings (GMM) with a variety of relevant topics and excellent guest speakers. The list included BSP Gov. Amando Tetangco, Jr., MB Member Felipe Medalla, PDIC Pres. Cristina Orbeta, DOTr Usec for Road Transport and Infrastructure, Anelli Lontoc, PCHC Pres. Emmanuel Barcena, DOF Usec for Revenue Operations Group Antonette Tionko, Cardinal Luis Antonio Tagle, NDP Commissioner Raymund Liboro, and Ms. Yvonne Marie A. Corpuz, Global Chief Learning Officer, The Bank of Tokyo-Mitsubishi UFJ, Ltd. Undoubtedly, the GMMs have always served as an effective venue for sharing information, and networking among members and our stakeholders.

We continued to maximize our communications through the BAIPHIL On the Go, BAIPHIL Market Watch, BAIPHIL Empowerment Series, and LegReg Updates. Regularly posted at the BAIPHIL website and easily accessible, these publications have helped us to be connected with the general membership and get the buy-in from our different stakeholders. Internally, these publications have brought the various committees closer and enabled them to celebrate their achievements:

BAIPHIL ON-THE-GO – 12 BAIPHIL MARKET WATCH (BMW) – 243 BAIPHIL EMPOWERMENT SERIES – 12 LEGREG UPDATES – 10 H. ADMINISTRATIVE AND OPERATIONAL EFFICIENCY Intensified collection efforts - Continuous improvements in our internal work processes have been observed to help keep

our sustainability. Collection efforts on accounts receivables have been intensified, the results of which as of May end 2017 have been very encouraging, reflecting a 78% reduction of our outstanding accounts receivables.

Installation of new accounting system - One major capacity building we have undertaken was to improve our accounting

infrastructure through the acquisition and installation of a new accounting system, called MYOB. The new system has features that are more responsive to our accounting as well as our other administrative management requirements.

I. CONSISTENT CORPORATE SOCIAL RESPONSIBILITY As part of our responsibility as a corporate citizen, we have been very active in strengthening our relationship with the

public through our various CSR projects: The Scholarship Program for three (3) underprivileged children of Tahanan ng Panginoon is in full swing. Conducted the annual Medical, Dental and Surgical Mission, in partnership with SM Foundation, the local government and

the provincial hospital on April 1, 2017, benefiting 2,641 people of economically -challenged communities in Bayambang, Pangasinan.

In partnership with the BSP, conducted six (6) financial education and values formation programs for the parents of public

school children and public school teachers as well. A total of 1,167 participated in these sessions held in various places, to wit:

To raise funds for the Financial Education programs (FEP), held for the first time a Street Dance Competition among member banks on October 27, 2016, departing from the usual Interbank Chorale Competition, with 10 teams participating. Not only did this competition allowed us to gather funds for our project, it also promoted camaraderie among banks during the competition.

We also had an outreach project on July 1, 2017 dubbed “Handog Saya Sa Kabataan” - a visit to Bahay Pag-asa, inside the De

La Salle Campus in Dasmariñas Cavite City, a transformation center for youths 15 -18 years of age who are in conflicts with the law.

At the timing of the 29th National Convention in March 2017, we also held the “Beyond Banking: The Search for the Best CSR

Project”, an event aimed at providing a venue to recognize and promote the member institutions’ CSR projects as well as serving as an inspiration to the banking industry.

We continued our support to social artisan development through Rags2Riches (R2R), a social enterprise that aims to

empower community artisans from impoverished communities. The committee solicited donations (used laptops, etc.) from BAIPHIL member banks and associate members for R2R.

J. SUCCESSFUL HOLDING OF THE 29th NATIONAL CONVENTION One major project that every BAIPHIL member looks forward to is the biennial national convention. For this year, the 29th National Convention held on March 10 -11, 2017 at the Taal Vista Hotel in Tagaytay City, with the theme, “Leveraging Capabilities and Synergies,” was an overwhelming success, as shown by the huge turn-out of attendance (206 attendees and 37 sponsors, exhibitors, and donors) and the positive feedback of attendees. The convention was the highlight of the BAIPHIL Training and Education Week celebration this year, bringing together luminaries from the Philippine banking industry and the government, as well as SMEs from various fields, to discuss the latest trends and issues in banking, information technology, cybersecurity and the future of the industry. We gathered distinguished speakers and guests including Senate Pres. Aquilino Martin L. Pimentel III, as the keynote speaker, Trade and Industry Sec. Ramon M. Lopez, BSP Gov. Amando M. Tetangco, Jr., BSP Deputy Gov. Diwa C. Guinigundo, BSP Deputy Gov. Nestor A. Espenilla, East West Bank Pres. Antonio C. Moncupa, Jr., Union Bank Pres. Edwin R. Bautista, PNB Savings Bank Pres. Jovencio B. Hernandez, Security Bank FVP and Chief Compliance Officer Dante Fuentes, BSP Director Melchor Plabasan, Information Security Officers Group Pres. Joey Regala, PNP Anti-Cybercrime Group Assistant Chief, P/Supt. Jay Guillermo, FireEye – Southeast Asia Sr. Director Steve Ledzian, MasterCard Southeast Asia VP Kelvin Lee and Fr. As PNB Chairman and Past BAIPHIL Pres. Flor Gozon-Tarriela wrote it beautifully in the Business World OnLine on March 24, 2017: “Indeed, the National Convention levelled up. Everyone will agree that it was a convention to remember.” The 76th year of BAIPHIL has proven to be another fruitful and meaningful year, a feat which could not have been achieved without the strong support of the institutional members, the BSP, and selfless dedication of the women and men who tirelessly contributed their time, talent and resources in the activities of the institute – BAIPHIL directors, officers, committee chairpersons and members, past BAIPHIL presidents, partners and friends. Thank you all! Let us all continue to work together as BAIPHIL takes on new challenges.

Turn-over of Donations to Rags2Riches

BAIPHIL Partners with Rags2Riches Inc. in “ Technology for Artisan Development” ( to uplift the lives of artisans from impoverished communities) BAIPHIL, through the Special Projects Committee , conducts Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) Projects consisting of the following: 1) the Scholarship Program with current grantees of three (3) indigent High School Students; 2) Financial Education Program for the teachers and parents of public school children; 3) annual medical and dental mission to indigent families; 4) gift giving to the residents of orphanages and homes for the aged as well as cancer stricken children at the charity ward of PGH and 5) counseling to some youth who are in conflict with the law. In line with this, BAIPHIL responded to the request of Rags2Riches, Inc. President, Reese Fernandez- Ruiz for support through a corporate partnership program called “Technology for Artisan Development”. Rags2Riches is a social enterprise empowering community artisans from the Philippines. It provides artisans from impoverished communities, particularly Payatas, opportunities to improve their livelihood and lives through providing them with design integration, market access and community business systems. Rags2Riches artisans are supported by R2R through an end-to-end supply chain that ensures that artisans get fair and regular wages. R2R also provides these artisans training for business development, financial literacy , and values formation through BAIPHIL’s Financial Education Program. In order for R2R to do all these effectively, R2R creates advocacy materials such as articles, artisan photos, and others, to be able to share the advocacy to more people and in effect create positive impact. It is in this area where BAIPHIL supported R2R by soliciting from its members and member institutions, new and used laptops that are due for replacement but still serviceable or cash that will be used to purchase laptops. The donations, which consisted of one used laptop and cash totaling Php39,347.- from generous and kind hearted BAIPHIL members and member institutions, were turned over to Ms. Reese Ruiz-Fernandez at the BAIPHIL office last June 28, 2017 with BAIPHIL President Liza Ortiz, Director Bles Andres and Finance & Budget Committee Chairperson Mharivic Abanto, past President, Francis Puzon. and Special Projects Committee Chairperson, Marilen Ruiz in attendance. The Special Projects Committee and Rags2Riches Inc. would like to thank incoming BSP Governor Nestor Espenilla, Mr. Noel Barcena, President of PCHC, Mr. Andres Cornejo , Chairman & CEO of Producers Bank, Ms. Pinky Deriquito of UCPB, Ms. Marietta Fondevilla of DBP, Ms. Marilou Prudente of BDO , and Ms. Tess Andres, Associate Life member, for their valuable donations. These will surely go a long way in uplifting the lives of the impoverished artisans, particularly the Nanays of Payatas communities, who are the main beneficiaries of Rags2Riches, Inc. To those who would still like to support Rags2Riches, donations may be given to the BAIPHIL secretariat.

Leveraging Value in Cebu

Staying true to its theme for FY 2016- 2017 “Leveraging Capabilities and Synergies for Banking Excellence,” the BAIPHIL has continued to leverage value as it extends its reach far beyond its home markets in Metro Manila to far-flung corners of the Visayas Region. With BAIPHIL President Liza L. Ortiz, Directors-In-Charge of Legal, Governance and Compliance Course Committee Bles P. Andres and Romel D. Meniado, and SECRETARIAT Supervisor Tess O. Featuring: The PR & Publications Committee FY 2016-2017

As the last of the two featured committees of the BAIPHIL on the Go, the PR and Publications Committee of Fiscal Year 2016-2017 marked its accomplishments as Editorial Board of BAIPHIL with the pioneering collaborative efforts of all the members of the committee with the individual member tasked to be the lead editor for assigned monthly BAIPHIL on the Go. The unparalleled commitment of Director in-charge, Vangie Nevado steered the committee to publish newspaper supplements on broad sheets aptly covering the activities of the BAIPHIL, educating the readers about the tasks and programs of the various BAIPHIL Committees and introducing the BAIPHIL members behind the organization. The Biennial National Convention was featured last 10 March 2017 in the Philippine Star. The PR and Publication Committee utilized media platforms that include the BAIPHIL website (www.BAIPHIL.org) for the promotion of BAIPHIL activities and in the reinforcement of linkages with institutional bank members, associate members, regulators, the general public as well as domestic and other global partner organizations in the banking industry. The BAIPHIL on the Go online is the testament of digitized news and information vehicle. The 2016-2017 BAIPHIL Theme “Leveraging Capabilities and Synergies for Banking Excellence” Logo was created by the committee to depict the essence of the FY 2016-2017 Directorship. With the accomplishments of this BAIPHIL Team headed by President Liza Ortiz, it couldn’t be anything else. All the four (4) segments excellently came into fruition.
