5. Procedure.
Positioning of Flagmen / flag women The Flagmen / flag women must be positioned approximately one kilometeraway from the construction workers in all directions of traffic flow. This distance
will vary from site to site. Flagmen / flag women are the first traffic controls to be in position before any
work commences. The traffic control officer is responsible to ensure that Flagmen / flag women are
positioned at the correct distances from the work being performed. Flagmen / flag women must be clearly visible by means of reflective clothing. Flagmen / flag women must be issued with red flag of size not less 500mm x
500mm. Flagmen / flag women must be trained to face on-coming traffic at all times and
to stand clear of the road to minimize the risk of an accident involving theFlagmen / flag women and public traffic.
Positioning of Temporary Signage Temporary signage is only positioned after the Flagmen / flag women have taken
their positions. The traffic control officer is responsible to ensure the signs are placed affectively
at all times. Place clearly visible signs well away from work been done to protect workers. Ensure that stationery vehicles or equipment is protected in the same manner. High speed traffic must be slowed down effectively. Speed humps on the road
surface may be considered.
Traffic Lights and Stop Signs Should it become necessary to reduce the traffic flow in both directional flow to
one directional flow, traffic lights must be positioned and manned during nighttime periods.
Workers must wear suitable clothes to protect them against extreme cold duringnight times.
The making of fires must be discouraged to minimize the risk of field fires Proper communication systems must be established to ensure traffic control
personnel are communicating effectively. Traffic control personnel, at the control points, must be trained to ensure clear
signaling is communicated.
