ACCIDENTS

A. StudentWhen a student is injured on school grounds or a field trip, the teacher or person in charge shall immediately advise the office of the injury and refer the child for proper and appropriate treatment. A Health Office Referral Form (Forms Sections) must be completed and accompanied with the injured student when sent to the clinic.

DO NOT DIAGNOSE! Below are procedures to be followed:1. Maintain as much physical control of the group as possible.2. If a student is hurt give immediate attention and send for help.3. Do not move the injured party or bring him/her to the office.4. Check with the school’s nurse to make sure that the parents have been notified.5. Please complete all necessary paper work as soon as possible (student accident form and health

office referral form)

The staff member witnessing the accident shall then complete a student accident report form (see Form Section) indicating the nature and circumstances of the accident. Reports can be obtained from the front office. Injuries must be reported to the school office. Any accident should be reported, however minor it may appear. The accident report form is available in the front office and must be completed by the end of the day.

When completing the report, please keep in mind that these documents are sent to the Risk Management Department and can be used for litigation. Be clear and concise. Report what you saw, and the information given to you by witness(es). Do not state your personal opinion of why or how an injury/accident occurred. State only the facts.

B. Faculty and Staff When a faculty or staff member is involved in an accident (no matter how minor) at school it must be reported immediately and an accident form (see Confidential Secretary, Ms. Freeman, for the form) must be completed. If a faculty member requires medical attention and/or loss of time at work, a Worker’s Compensation Injury Form must be completed. A list of Worker’s Compensation doctors is available through the front office.

ABSENCE PROCEDURES (STAFF)

When you expect to be absent, you must report your absence to Smart Find Express, the voice communication system whereby you call the computer directly and identify yourself by your Social Security Number. The system will lead you through a series of steps including a way for you to leave specified instructions for the substitute. It will automatically call substitutes based on your priority listing. You will receive a handout with specific instructions. It is your responsibility to know how to use the system. A copy of procedure is included in the forms section.

Paraprofessionals are to adhere to the same time guidelines as a teacher

If it is necessary for you to follow these guidelines in the event that you are absent:

1. Call "Smart Find Express" at 754-321-2340 or https://sems.browardschools.com. It is available 24 hours a day. In the event that your sub is needed on a continued basis, it is important to contact the Confidential Secretary, Ms. Skarveles at 754-322-5080 ASAP, to let her know of your continued absence. If you do not call, the substitute will be released. The job is to be filled by a regular day to day sub and not the POOL SUB

When attending any school related workshop or activity, at least three (3) working days in advance, it is mandatory that you complete a Temporary Duty Authorization (TDA) form and submit it to the Principal for approval prior to attending the activity. TDA's should be completed as soon as you are aware of the workshop or meeting. Call TDA's into Smart Find Express in advance. Please do not wait until the last minute. Also, WRITE THE JOB NUMBER FOR THE SUBSTITUTE ON THE TDA prior to submitting it for approval. Attendance forms must be signed and returned to payroll contact.

3. Once you make a verbal agreement with a sub, please put the absence in the system.

4. Sick leave is provided for your personal illness or that of your immediate family. It should be used with the greatest of care since we are allowed only ten days per year, cumulative. PERSONAL DAYS ARE LIMITED TO SIX PER YEAR AND ARE NOT CUMULATIVE. Please refer to Article Twenty-Three of the BTU Collective Bargaining Agreement for additional information.

5. Staff members needing to leave school early for emergency reasons must complete form-requesting permission from an administrator. If permission is granted, staff member must sign out in Ms. Skarveles’ office. Sick or personal time may be impacted. Personal appointments should be made after the working day. Remember that Wednesdays and Thursdays are meeting days.

6. Questions regarding sick leave days, salary or employment status should be referred to Ms. Skarveles. If at any time during the school year a change in address, telephone number, or name occurs, please notify the confidential secretary immediately.

APPOINTMENTSYour (our) children are depending on you. Our workday is 7.5 hours a day. It

is imperative that you as the classroom teacher be committed to this time with

your students.

Please schedule all appointments or other engagements after your scheduled hours . If arrangements cannot be made around your working time please notify the office manager prior to any scheduled appointment so that a substitute may be utilized in these situations.

It is extremely difficult for us to obtain coverage for classes in hourly blocks or portions of a day. It might become necessary for you to utilize your sick/personal days.

Teacher Assistants/paraprofessionals are assigned to work with teachers and will not be used to take charge of classes for extended lengths of time.

ARRIVALSThe student’s day is from 7:45a.m. until 2:45p.m.

Paraprofessionals, Special Teachers and Administrators are strategically posted throughout the school to supervise students, and are to actively monitor them.

Students are to be admitted to the classroom at 7:40 a.m. No student is to leave after the initial entry into the classroom without a pass. At this time the students are to begin daily opener. This routine is to be taught to the students beginning the first day of school, and continued for all 180 days that the students are present.

Any student arriving after the 7:45a.m bell is considered tardy. Any student that arrives to class after 8:00am must have a pass. Tardies are to be indicated in Pinnacle attendance system and on the student report card. If a student is tardy after the parent has been contacted, a Broward Truancy Intervention Program (BTIP) Report is to be filled out. The BTIP report will be handled by Ms. Porter and forwarded to the School Social worker.

ASSEMBLIES

Assemblies are conducted as an extension of our curriculum. We will have programs periodically and utilize outside resources whenever possible.

General assemblies are usually held at the need or desire of faculty and students and often evolve from activities begun in the classroom.

Special assemblies may be called by the principal to provide information or special interest programs.

When assemblies are held and your class is invited, make sure you accompany, and actively supervise your class during the program. Teachers are to bring their classes to the cafeteria at the scheduled time. In the event of a delay, teachers will be notified via the intercom therefore, flexibility is necessary.

Behavior at assemblies is the responsibility of the classroom teacher. Please discuss assembly behavior prior to attendance. If it is the "special" teacher's time with your class, he/she will be responsible.

Assemblies should be educational and classroom teachers should prepare students prior to attending the assembly. Follow-up should be conducted when returning to the classroom. It is also an excellent time to discuss and teach proper etiquette.

Assembly programs must be cleared through the Principal and placed on the master calendar, at least four weeks prior to the performance date. It is generally desirable to invite parent or other interested persons to assemblies. Notify Mr. Levy, Head Facilities Service Person, of your plans if you need help.

ATTENDANCEStudent hours will be 7:45a.m. to 2:45p.m. The first bell will ring at 7:55 a.m. It is the responsibility of the instructional personnel to keep accurate attendance records for classroom use and for transmission to the office. This applies to all teachers, including Specials, and Resource teachers. (ESE/ESOL/ Pull-out) etc. At the end of the school year, all grade books/ attendance roster must be signed by the teacher and kept by the office as official documentation.

Attendance must be taken and carefully entered into Pinnacle on daily basis by 8:15 a.m. daily. Absences and tardies should be carefully entered on a daily basis, for this is a legal document.

CLASSROOM CARE/ CUSTODIAL SERVICES

The cleanliness of the building can greatly influence both students' and teachers' attitude about school. This is a cooperative effort that must exist and teachers play a vital role in any custodial efforts. There is no reason for rooms to be unclean. Have students clean their areas. Throw out all trash used and unused papers that are cluttering areas on Friday's.

Each class will be cleaned daily Teachers must supervise students in cleaning the classroom daily. Large articles are to be

picked up off the floor by students prior to dismissal. Particular care must be taken when using water supplies such as water paints, glue and

other substances, which may stain walls, carpets and furnishings. Do not use tape on painted surfaces or carpet.

Teachers are to contact Mr. Levy (Head Facilities Service Person) if your room is not being cleaned properly.

Encourage students to pick up trash inside and outside the building. Chairs should be stacked at the end of each day by the students. Tacks and staples are not to be left on the floor of the classroom. They destroy the

vacuum cleaners. Cooking utensils for the Pk/KG/ Rooms with ovens are the teacher's responsibility to

clean. Food, either for cooking or art projects, is to be stored in airtight containers to avoid insect and rodent infestations.

Cleanliness, organization, and neatness should be considered as part of the educational process. Students should clean their desk frequently. The best method for teaching these skills is by example.

Students must not put their feet on the walls. Students must be made responsible for any graffiti, marks etc. that they place on school property, walls, furniture, etc.

No furniture, TV sets, etc. are to be placed in front of the rear exit door. This is- a fire hazard. Classroom furniture must be arranged in a manner conducive to learning, safety and visibility of students. There are to be safe pathways, which will allow evacuation of the room in case of emergency. No furniture is to obstruct the classroom door.

CLASSROOM ETIQUETTEThis is an established code of conduct, developed by students and teachers that forms the foundation for a fair, kind and respectable environment for reaching one's teaching/ learning potential. Encourage your students to assist in maintaining a good school environment by being respectful of self and others. Lessons on indoor voices, listening, and general compliance

CLASS PARTIESAll class parties must be scheduled with the approval of the principal. In general, classes have a “Fall/Halloween, Winter Holiday, Valentine’s Day party and an End of the Year" party. Grade levels will work together on planning parties. Set times must be adhered to. Notification must be given if lunches or specials are cancelled.

BIRTHDAY CELEBRATIONS – Birthday Celebrations are allowed during “non-instructional times (lunch, recess, etc.). It is the teacher’s responsibility to coordinate birthday celebrations during times that do not impose on instructional time. Please refer any parental concerns to administration. Balloons, Birth hats, and other party favors are not permitted. Parents may not take pictures of students during the birthday celebration.

Home baked goods are not permitted as mandated by the State Board of Health.

CLASSROOM SUPERVISIONChildren are never to be left unsupervised. In an emergency notify the office and/or have a certified staff member who is available monitor your classroom. Please, do not have students stand/sit in the hallways for time out. They are not under your supervision. This is a safety concern.

Noise and conversations tend to magnify over the intercom system. Remember that all conversations can be heard by anyone in the office. Teach children to get quiet immediately when you are called by the office. Children are not to answer for the teacher. This includes classroom phones. An intercom call is to be answered by the teacher only. Children must have an established procedure to follow when the teacher is interrupted.

CLASSROOM VISITATIONThis is a public school. Parents, visitors, and the general public are always welcome. However, prior to visiting any area, all visitors must report to the office for a school pass. Please do not allow visitors in your classrooms without a pass. When administration visits your classroom, continue with your regularly scheduled activities. Visits are not to be an interference or disruption of the teaching/learning environment. If your assistance is needed, measures will be taken to gain your attention in a manner that does not upset the order of the class.

CLINICStudents who become ill or injured should be sent to the clinic with a Clinic Referral Form (see Section K Forms). The appropriate information must be completed on the referral form, which will be supplied to you. Emergency telephone numbers should be on file in the office. These numbers should be updated periodically. Children sent to the office for illness should be visibly symptomatic due to limited space and supervision.

Children who become ill or need medical attention must be sent to the office with a clinic referral form. Each teacher is to have several of these forms on hand in his/her classroom. Forms are available in the front office. A student sent to the office without a proper form will be returned to the classroom unless it is an obvious emergency. Be careful what you write on the clinic pass. A copy of this pass is to be sent home to the parent(s), and one is to be maintained in the student folder.

Students who are not dangerously ill will be sent back to class upon parent request or if the parent is on the way.

Children who are ill should not be in school, not only for their own health, but to prevent contamination of the other students. No child may be in school with an uncovered, open or running sore.

Broward County School Board Policy 6305 expressly forbids the dispensing of medicines to students by employees of the school system without specific authorization by the Health Director of the Broward County Health Department.

There must be a completed Medical Authorization Form on file in the office in order for school personnel to be allowed to administer medication. Teachers may not administer any medication.

REMEMBER: COUGH DROPS, ASPIRIN, EYE, EAR, OR NOSE DROPS, ALLERGY PILLS, ETC., CANNOT BE BROUGHT TO SCHOOL BY THE STUDENTS.

Do not call a parent or advise a student to call his/her parent to come, and pick up their child due to illness or injury. The necessity to do this will be determined by the school nurse, principal or assistant principal.

CODE OF ETHICSThe Code of Ethics guidelines defines the professional standards, conduct and the standards of competent professional performance. Each instructional staff member will be held to the standards defined within the Code of Ethics brochure. Please see refer to the Code of Ethics Brochure.

CODE OF STUDENT CONDUCTSee "Classroom Management" and Section E

COMMITTEES Committee assignments are normally made at the beginning of each school year.

Committees are formed to promote the goals of our School Improvement Team plans, as well as other identified needs and objectives. These responsibilities should be shared among the faculty.

Additional committees are organized as needed to promote a cooperative approach to problem solving needs, or objectives. Teachers are encouraged to be involved in the school operation by participating on committees.

COMMUNICATIONSCommunication is important for coordinating activities in a well-organized school. Check the PBE E Conference for posted messages, information, and news.

"PBE The Funnel Week-At-A Glance" will provide an itinerary of scheduled activities for the week. The Pelican Pouch "Week-At-A-Glance" will be distributed as weekly to faculty and updated regularly on all pertinent information. It is important for staff members to read and highlight those items, which are included in the The Funnel "Week-At-A-Glance". The bulletins should be kept in your Lesson Plan/Grade book for easy reference.

The PBE “The Tornado Tales” will be sent home with all students at the beginning of each Month. If you have information to include, give it to Newsletter coordinator by the 15 th of each month.

Home & School Connection monthly newsletters will go home on the 15th of each month. Nutrition Nuggets; Reading Connection Beginning & Intermediate

The PBE Administrative Calendar & Pompano Beach E Conference bulletin will be updated daily, please check your CAB daily, changes may occur without notification.

Faculty, grade chair, and other meetings will be held on the second Wednesday of each month or as deemed necessary by the principal. Team meetings are held on the first and third Wednesdays. Do not schedule doctor appointments, conferences, dental appointments, etc., on Wednesdays.

Each staff member is expected to attend meetings unless there is an excused absence. If you miss a meeting, it is your responsibility to obtain the information disseminated and discussed at the meeting. A staff meeting is a professional meeting and your actions and conduct should always be professional.

Information is communicated to staff in written bulletins, posted announcements, by intercom, or closed-circuit television.

All communications such as letters to parents, field trips notices, etc., must be cleared through the administration’s office before being sent home. A copy will be kept on file in the front office.

Noise, conversation, etc., tend to magnify over the intercom system. Teach children to get quiet immediately when you are called by the office. It is embarrassing when a parent comes for a child, the office calls your room, and there is an excessive amount of classroom noise heard over the intercom. Children are not to answer for the teacher. An intercom call or telephone call is to be answered by the teacher only. When replying to the office via the intercom, please be aware that there are other people, parents, and visitors in the office.

A master calendar for school events will be posted online and each staff member will receive a Monthly calendar of events on the first Friday of each month. All calendar events must be approved. After approval, an administrator will add it to the master copy.

PLEASE CHECK YOUR MAILBOX AND SCHOOL E-MAIL OFTEN.

COMPETITIONS/ CONTEST/ FAIRSPompano Beach Elementary School Handbook – Section C -20

Page 21: ACCIDENTS - Broward County Public Web viewWhen a student is injured on school grounds or a field trip, the teacher or person in charge shall immediately advise the office of the injury

Throughout the year various competitions are available for students to enter. Please make your students aware of these competitions and promote student participation.

Teachers should prepare their students throughout the year for the Broward County sponsored fairs. These are wonderful learning experiences and an opportunity for students to receive recognition.

CONFERENCESConferences are an important part of reporting pupil progress to parents and can be of great help in furthering home/school understanding.

Conferences are your professional responsibility. Board Policy 5104 states, “Conferences with parents or guardians are a required part of the reporting system.” Teachers must hold a minimum of two (2) conferences each school year with parents (ONE CONFERENCE PER SEMESTER). A person-to-person conference is always most desirable; however, there are times when it is impossible for parents to come in. In such cases, a telephone conference will be acceptable. Telephone conferences should be followed by a form sent to parents for their signature. Participation in any staffing is considered a documented conference and should be documented as such.

Conferences involving unusual concerns should be referred to administration. When it becomes necessary for other school personnel to attend a conference, such as special area teachers or exceptional educations teachers, make plans in advance to avoid conflict.

Results of conferences must be written on conference forms (See Forms section) or signed by the parents, and placed in the student's cum folder.

Try to arrange conferences at school where you can sit down and show work samples, textbooks, and discuss the child's progress in-depth. These may be scheduled on teacher planning days, planning time, before and after school. If parents are unable to come into the school, phone conferences should be written up, and then sent home for parent's signature. At the end of the school year, conference forms will be filed inside the cum folder.

If you feel that a parent might be abusive, either physically or verbally, please schedule your conference with another colleague who serves your student and utilize the main conference room and/or invite the principal or assistant principal to attend. This is a suggestion for your benefit.

Conference verification forms must be submitted to the Assistant Principal as deemed necessary. Dates of conferences should be noted on conference/interim checklist.

CONFIDENTIALITYOne of the most profound traits of professionalism is confidentiality. Confidentiality of students and staff information should be observed at all times. Teachers should not discuss a student's behavior, academic progress, or problems in the teachers' lounge or other social places. Grades should not be humiliating to any student. Students may not check or grade the papers of other students. Students may check only their own work and may not exchange papers. Red ink is not recommended when grading student’s work.

The Buckley Amendment (Family Educational Rights and Privacy Act) implies:1. Teachers cannot post grades of students by name or use of social security number/student number because

this practice violates students' rights to privacy.2. Teachers cannot give grades over the phone.3. Teachers cannot pass around class rolls with students' names/social security # visible.4. Teachers cannot display the works of students as examples of GOOD or BAD because this violates the

students' rights of privacy.5. Teachers cannot permit students to grade or correct any other student's papers(s)/assignments.6. Teachers cannot ask students to raise their hands if they responded correctly or incorrectly to any item. To

do so places some students at risk of being embarrassed.7. Teachers cannot talk about/compare students, by name, with any other party at school (unless official

staffing procedures are in place). NO GOSSIPING IN THE TEACHERS' LOUNGE!

CORPORAL PUNISHMENTIt is unacceptable to hit, pull, or demean a student in an inappropriate manner. If it becomes

necessary to remove a student from class, please call the office or an administrator or support

personnel for assistance. Don't hesitate to alert the office prior to a situation escalating.

CUMULATIVE RECORDS Cum folders are legal documents and should be treated as such. Folders MUST be signed out when taken out of the office. Appropriate contents of the folders are the responsibility of the current teacher. Please review your cum's to become more knowledgeable of your students and their needs. All non-school related persons (or school related persons on non-official business) seeking access must sign the Consent to Access form. Parents seeking to view records should be directed to the office. See our Guidance Counselor with specific needs.

Cumulative records are never to be taken home. Never allow a student to carry a cum folder anywhere.

1. Procedures for the completion of the cumulative (cum) folder are issued by the County office. Procedures must be uniform in all schools. ALL CUMS MUST BE SIGNED OUT IN THE OFFICE WITH THE REGISTRAR AND RETURNED WITHIN 24 HOURS TO THE REGISTRAR.

2. Upon withdrawing a child from your class, the cum folder is to be brought up-to-date and sent to the office within 24 hours. Use the Cum Folder Checklist to be sure all items are complete.

3. The office will provide you with a NOTICE OF TRANSFER form for the withdrawing student to take to the new school. This form provides information on special programs and continuous placement.

4. WHEN A STUDENT IS WITHDRAWING. UNDER NO CIRCUMSTANCES SHOULD MORE THAN TWO (2) DAYS ELAPSE BEFORE THE CUM IS RETURNED TO THE OFFICE.

A cumulative folder is to be maintained on each student. Procedures for completion of the cum folders are issued by the District (see Forms section). Please follow these procedures closely when completing a new folder.

CURRICULUM

When used appropriately, developmentally appropriate curriculum, and energized, exciting instruction can impact student behavior and student performance. Teachers are encouraged to exercise good professional judgment in providing for maximum student success.

Grade levels are to have the same daily instructional schedule. The schedules are to be prepared by the teachers and are due to administration on the last day of pre-planning. If, modifications are made to the original schedule, it is the responsibility of the grade chairperson to submit an updated schedule to administration. In order for the visitations to be successful, we must have accurate schedules.

Curriculum Standards of Service as set forth by the Broward County School Board should be incorporated in your plans. (See School Board Policy #6001.1 in Index.)

1. A student day shall consist of three hundred thirty (330) minutes of regularly scheduled instruction in the basic skills areas required by state statutes (reading, writing, mathematics, foreign language, science, social studies, health, physical education, art, music and computer education.) Indoor/outdoor physical activities shall be provided daily. Each student shall receive regularly scheduled instruction in art, music, and physical education by a specialist. All Teachers must follow the instructional focus grade level curriculum as aligned to the needs of the students.

2. Critical content and critical thinking skills shall be included in the content areas.

3. Each teacher will be responsible for instructing three hundred (345) minutes a day or (360) minutes if you are teaching the extended day period. (I do, We do, You do-Gradual Release Model)

4. Each teacher will perform such other duties and assignments as required.

5. The Individualized Education Plan (IEP) staffing and review committee may modify the standards of service for an exceptional education student if it is determined that modification would be in the best interest of the student. A decision to modify the standards of service shall be documented on the student's IEP.

6. Appropriate units of instruction in substance (drug/alcohol) education will be required at each of the elementary grade levels.

7. All elementary students will receive instruction in computer education basic skills as defined by the district.

8. District adopted basal textbooks shall/can be used as supplementary resources for the instructional program. We encourage grade level teachers to use other rigorous instructional materials also as supplementary resources.

9. Every grade level has a safety component as part of their health curriculum. The Human Sexuality Unit, located in the "Healthy Children Learn Better" binder should be taught through the Health Curriculum in all grade levels. Water, bicycle, fire and gun safety, as well as substance abuse awareness, are taught to all grade levels. School-wide safety assemblies, such as "Stranger Danger," are scheduled periodically.

Pompano Beach Elementary School Handbook – Section C -24

Page 25: ACCIDENTS - Broward County Public Web viewWhen a student is injured on school grounds or a field trip, the teacher or person in charge shall immediately advise the office of the injury

10. Accountability procedures shall be established through a district-wide management system, standardized tests, state testing and other accountability procedures in the Standards of Service and Accountability policy.

CUSTODIAL SERVICES All requests for custodial services must be submitted in writing via email right to Head Facilities Service Person. Please see Assistant Principal if you are having problems with custodial service request.

DAILY OPENERS

Each instructional day is to begin with Daily Openers. The core activities are being provided to you. Supplemental or enrichment activities may be added to at the teacher's discretion, but everyone on the grade level must use the core activities.

Suggested activities for daily openers are as follows: Journal Writing, Handwriting (Primary), – Language Arts Math/Science (Intermediate). Students should be able to complete the opener silently during the AM announcements. Openers must be reviewed

Openers are to be put on the board before you leave each day. This is to be monitored by the grade chairpersons and will be checked by administration periodically. If a teacher is absent, the grade chairperson is responsible for putting the openers on board.

Students are to be taught to begin the openers when they enter the classroom each day. These activities are to become a "habit" each morning.

DISCIPLINE

Appropriate student behavior is essential in providing maximum learning opportunities. Proper student behavior can be achieved with high expectations, proper organization, and appropriate, stimulating learning opportunities

The Student Conduct and Discipline Code is to be your guide in matters relating to school discipline. Consistently fair and firm discipline is an asset to your program and helps to avoid problems of misunderstanding.

Helpful hints for preventative discipline: 1. Be in your area when the children arrive. A pleasant greeting in the morning sets the tone,

which will aid in controlling the class for the entire day.2. Think ahead. Anticipate a problem.3. Do not overreact.

Pompano Beach Elementary School Handbook – Section C -25

Page 26: ACCIDENTS - Broward County Public Web viewWhen a student is injured on school grounds or a field trip, the teacher or person in charge shall immediately advise the office of the injury

4. Move around the classroom when your schedule permits. Continually controlling groups from a seated position is impossible.

5. Walk to an offender, speak firmly, but quietly. The closer you get to the student, the more effective.

6. Keep your eyes moving. A "look" can say as much as a word.7. A class can be brought under control after an active experience by:

a) reading a quiet poemb) reading a short story, or c) playing a soothing record.

8. Use positive reinforcement to improve behavior. "Happy Day Letters" work; they also improve public relations.

9. Give children some choices when possible.10. Referral to the Principal/Assistant Principal for the most part is the last resort, not the first.

One talk with the principal for Kindergarten and First grade children will sometimes be effective. Once a teacher has abdicated authority, it is lost for good.

11. Avoid threats that cannot be carried out.12. Separate unacceptable but normal behavior from unacceptable, serious abnormal behavior.

Be sure the punishment fits the infraction.13. Allow the class to draw up guidelines for acceptable behavior. This procedure is better than

arbitrary standards imposed on students.14. Avoid verbal battles. Put a period at the end of your directive.15. Having children stand in a line to check their papers is not only educationally unacceptable,

but also creates a situation conducive to misbehavior.16. Take children out for a walk if things get tough.17. Involve children in the day's activities and expectations each morning. At the end of the

day, evaluate the day.18. Students should never be sent from the classroom to an unsupervised area.19. Teach behavior! Teach behavior! Teach behavior!20. Teach procedures! Teach procedures! Teach procedures!

A referral form is to be used to send students to the office when behavior is so severe that further disciplinary action is warranted. Students should be sent to the office only after classroom consequences and parental notifications have been unsuccessful.

Students should also be sent to the office if their actions are so severe as to require an immediate referral to the office, i.e. fighting, open defiance of authority.(Notify the Front Office for Admin Support)

All Referrals must be completed online via SBBC Discipline Management System Students that are removed from the class MUST have a referral completed. Students will not be removed without proper documentation.

The first three week's lesson plans are to reflect the techniques used for teaching school and class rules, consequences, and rewards. Rules are to be re-taught and reinforced on a daily-monthly (as needed) basis. This is to be included as a part of your lesson plans.

As you implement your plan, remember that classroom management is guided by a number of principals. Some are as follows:

1. Be consistent. Make rules and stick to them.2. Reward good behavior. Ignore bad behavior if it is not disrupting the class routine.3. Children need order and routine. Plan ahead.

Pompano Beach Elementary School Handbook – Section C -26

Page 27: ACCIDENTS - Broward County Public Web viewWhen a student is injured on school grounds or a field trip, the teacher or person in charge shall immediately advise the office of the injury

4. Be firm, yet loving.5. Catch children being good and praise them.

Remember, parent involvement is vital to the success of this or any plan concerning the discipline of children, as attitudes have been taught by parents during preschool years. Keep parents informed. Don’t sugar coat the truth.

UNACCEPTABLE DISCIPLINE PROCEDURES INCLUDE: Ridiculing a child Assigning meaningless written workHitting Deprivation of natural needsPinching Putting a child in the restroom or closetScreaming continuously in the classroom Extreme physical exerciseDepriving of total Special activity period Indications of ridiculePlacing a child outside with no supervision Writing “ I will not….” sentences

*Do not use Music, P.E. Media, or World Languages (Specials) classes for disciplinary actions

DISMISSALIn order that dismissal may be orderly, each teacher is required to escort their students to their assigned area at dismissal time so that supervision is provided for the children leaving the classroom and for those passing by. Please impress upon your class the importance of following safety rules and obeying the Safety Patrols.

Encourage pupils to leave school promptly at dismissal time. Please release all students promptly when the bell rings. Children are not to be dismissed early or released to the custody of anyone without clearance from, or knowledge of, the front office. Adults coming to remove children from school must sign them out from the office. Teachers will be notified to send child to the office.

Children will be released only to adults listed on emergency dismissal forms. Students are not to remain on campus past dismissal time unless prior approval from the principal has been obtained, as well as permission forms signed by parent and indicating method of getting home.

Do not detain children in your room for any reason (i.e. to jot down homework, erase boards, clean up, etc.). The campus is to be cleared of all students not attending after-school care by no later than 3:00 P.M. except in the case of inclement weather or late buses.,

Parents should be notified 24 hours in advance if children are to remain in school after 2:45 P.M. for practice, club meetings, detentions, or other scheduled activities. When

Pompano Beach Elementary School Handbook – Section C -27

Page 28: ACCIDENTS - Broward County Public Web viewWhen a student is injured on school grounds or a field trip, the teacher or person in charge shall immediately advise the office of the injury

this is necessary, meetings are to be cleared with the principal/assistant principal in advance. Parents are to pick up their children at the designated time or send a note in writing as to where the student is to go after such activities.

Instruct students to go directly where they belong. Students are to be reminded to establish a location to meet siblings, etc. They are not to be allowed to go into any buildings after dismissal. Students are to be reminded to walk during dismissal, not run. All Staff members must be on one accord.

DOORS AND WINDOWSWindows in classroom doors are not to be covered with curtains, signs, etc. They are to remain unobstructed at all times. Outside doors and windows are to remain closed at all times. The air conditioning units will not function adequately with the doors and windows open. It is sometimes difficult to maintain the temperature at a level comfortable for everyone. School staff and students need to bring sweaters to school if they find the temperature uncomfortable.

DRESS CODE (STUDENT)Refer to The Student Code of Conduct

DRESS CODE (STAFF)Teaching (working with students) is a profession and professional dress gives that opinion to the public. YOU ARE A PROFESSIONAL. Professional dress is strongly encouraged. Research has proven that student behavior is influenced by the teacher's/staff dress. You set the example for our students.

While a specific dress code is not set forth, teachers and staff are expected to look professional, refraining from shorts, form-fitting, see-through clothing and revealing clothing. Slides, flip flops and other shoes which do not come under the heading "Dress for Success" should not be worn to school. We set examples for students by what we wear. They definitely watch us. Special classroom projects and "restrictive" field trips are an exception to this rule. See Code of Ethics - 6B-5.010 #4

Appropriate dress for field trips may include shorts, which must be long, walking shorts that are not tight fitting.

E-MAIL Pompano Beach Elementary School Handbook – Section C -28

Page 29: ACCIDENTS - Broward County Public Web viewWhen a student is injured on school grounds or a field trip, the teacher or person in charge shall immediately advise the office of the injury

Throughout the school year, the administration will use e-mail as a means of communication with the staff. Therefore, staff members need to check their e-mail for messages three times a day: in the morning prior to the beginning of classes, during their lunch or planning time, and at the end of the school day once classes are over.

Since you are actively teaching during the school day, you should log off of your e-mail account. This will prevent students, parents, and/or others from reading or sending e-mail from your account. And more importantly, will prevent incoming messages from distracting the students or disrupting your lessons.

Non-emergency phone messages will be sent via e-mail or written message will be place in your mailbox.

EARLY DISMISSALFor the safety of our students, parents are to report to the office when picking up children early (even if it is just 5 minutes early). Parents must sign children out in the office before-they leave campus early. Teachers will not dismiss students to parents at the classroom door. Remember that you are ultimately in charge of a student from 7:45 A.M. until 2:45 P.M.Early Dismissal will not be permitted after 2:15 pm unless it is an EXTREME EMERGENCY.

A list of persons to whom a child may be released is found on file in the office. Special note should be taken in regards to primary students and in cases where family situations warrant the elimination of a person from this approved list. A child shall not be released to any person not included on the registration and/or office information card.

Students whose parents send notes to request early dismissal should be sent to the office five minutes prior to the time the parent will arrive to sign them out. This will prevent interruptions in the classroom by the office staff.

If you release a student early from your classroom without following the appropriate early dismissal procedures and there is no documentation of the person picking that child up, you may be putting yourself in a legal situation.

EMPLOYEE IDENTIFICATION PROCEDURESAll employees will be issued a photo identification to be worn at all times. Each staff member photo will be taken during Pre-planning. Additional photos will be taken in the Media Center by Micro –Computer Technology Specialist.

EMERGENCY ACTION PLANSee Section I

Pompano Beach Elementary School Handbook – Section C -29

Page 30: ACCIDENTS - Broward County Public Web viewWhen a student is injured on school grounds or a field trip, the teacher or person in charge shall immediately advise the office of the injury

EMERGENCY INFORMATION CARDS EMERGENCY INFORMATION CARDS must be completed for each student. The emergency information cards will be kept in the office. A copy will be kept by the teacher in a separate folder, properly labeled, and placed in the front of your file cabinet for easy access. Please discuss with your students the instructions given by their parents as to where the students are to go if there is an emergency dismissal.

Rainy day dismissal will be announced over the intercom. If it is lightning or storming, students will be held in the classroom until called for – Car riders will be escorted to their designated classroom. Common sense prevails with releasing children during such conditions. As soon as conditions permit, an all call will be made to dismiss. If it is a light rain at dismissal time, regular dismissal will take place. Students should not expect to use the phone to call parents. An understanding needs to be made between parents and students regarding procedures to follow on rainy days. Please discuss this with your students.

EMPLOYEE ASSISTANCE PROGRAMThe Employee Assistance Program (EAP) is designed to help employees solve personal problems that may or may not affect job performance. The School Board recognizes that employees experience problems such as marital or family conflict, abuse of alcohol and/or drugs, stress, and many other difficulties. Any employee may call EAP for assistance at any time. The administration need not be consulted or advised of such calls. With help, most employees can solve their problems and lead happier, more productive lives.

GRADE BOOK

Every teacher will have a grade book provided by the County for the purpose of recording daily marks and examination grades. There should be a section for each academic subject and the teacher is responsible for instruction and grading on a report card. There should be a sufficient number of grades for each academic subject to determine an average and give the appropriate letter grade using the numerical of the report card. Please refer to the Standard of Service (School Board Policy #6000.1 and Promotion/Retention Policy #5104) for answers to any questions, or feel free to discuss acceptable grading procedures with the principal/assistant principal.

Grades should reflect daily work, board work, independent/center, blackline masters, homework, textbooks tests, teacher-made tests, and quizzes. Grades should be labeled so that incomplete assignments can be identified and areas of weakness easily detected.

The grade book record is a helpful resource both in formulation of a grade average for the pupil's progress report and in conducting parent conferences.

All records should be neat and accurate, entries should be in ink. Grade books are to be submitted to the office at the end of the year. They are kept for adult reviews for five years.

Approximately two grades per week per subject when possible should be recorded for each student. (a minimum of 18 grades per quarter).

Date and title must be indicated above grade. Grades must be recorded properly and must coincide with the report card grades.

Use designated boxes on pages and record grade in week that grade is earned.

Final report card grades should be available indicated in the grade book or on report card copies. Please be sure to check Board Policy for numerical value of grades.

Grade books are to be submitted with your quarterly report cards. Be sure that the quarterly grade averages in your grade book correlate with the grades indicated on your report card.

Teachers are to submit grade books to the principal upon the completion of the school year. Grade books are legal documents and should be maintained neatly and accurately.

GRADE GROUPSGrade groups are established to ensure consistency in the curriculum provided for the students. At these meetings the grade chairperson will share information gleaned from the monthly grade

chairperson meetings, pertinent information from "The Pelican Pouch- Week-AT-A-Glance", workshops, seminars, The Master Teacher professional development, other concerns, Instructional Focus, best practices, and/or other bulletins.

The grade chairperson is to make arrangements in advance if there is a need for additional academic assistance from support staff. Support Staff members will present at the grade group meetings. They will also meet periodically with each grade group to discuss concerns and make curriculum - changes.

HALL PASSESTeachers are responsible for knowing the whereabouts of their student(s) who are sent out of the classroom for any reason. Students are NEVER to be out of the classroom without a pass. Each teacher is responsible for making:

Two (2) hall passes for students to use when doing errands, escorting students to the clinic, etc. Teachers must send students in pairs at all times. Any student(s) found in the hallway without a pass will be taken to the office and the teacher will be notified.

HEALTH (see also Cl in ic) Children who become ill or injured should be sent to the clinic with a Health Referral Form (Form #2). The parents will be called and the student will either be sent home or back to class.

In case of accident, parents must be notified, so be sure to inform the office of pertinent details. A Student Accident Report (Form #1) must be completed and submitted to the office the same day.

Teachers should attempt to recognize symptoms of skin disease or other communicable disorders. Any chronic condition should be reported to the school nurse/office staff. Only office staff should call parents to pick up students to go home for an illness.

Pupils are weighed and measured twice a year. Audiometric (hearing) testing and eye checks are completed according to County policy. Health sheets are to be kept current in cum folders.

HEALTH RECORDSThere must be a health record sheet for each student. Pupils are weighed and measured according to grade placement. The information must be recorded and graphed. Chronic illnesses should also be recorded on a student's health record sheet.

Records or information concerning a student's health should be placed in the health folder immediately. If a parent divulges health information to the classroom teacher that is of a delicate matter, the teacher is required by law to keep this information confidential to the point as indicated by the parent. A student's health status is a legal matter, which could result in litigation being taken if confidentiality is violated. Remember that you should treat every child the way you would want yourself or your child to be treated

GRANTSI would encourage all professionals to get involved with grant writing. Explore new horizons and enhance your curriculum and the school's effectiveness -through innovations that can be

GUIDANCE / STUDENT SUPPORT SERVICES

The responsibility for seeing that the individual problems of a child are properly and fairly dealt with resides with the classroom teacher. In situations where extra counseling or assistance is needed, the teacher should discuss the matter with the principal and/or counselor. The guidance counselors are available for counseling, individual counseling, small group counseling, and class presentations.

HOMEWORK POLICY #6306 Homework shall be encouraged and assigned to individual student(s) when and where appropriate to enhance the learning situation and to provide for skill improvement.

Homework must be given to every student from Monday through Thursday to meet the needs of the students and must be an extension of their school activities. Completion of homework is to

be reflected in student's grades.

Homework is valuable when it meets the needs of the individual student and is usually an extension of school activities. Homework emphasis should be on strengthening skills taught in the classroom, as well as teaching students responsibilities.

The type of homework and amount assigned should be consistent with ability of the students as well as the age and grade level of the student(s). Student should receive feedback on the homework assigned on a regular basis.

Parents and teachers should work cooperatively to make homework appropriate for the student(s). There are many opportunities for gathering information for enrichment, or group projects, which will serve the best interest of the student if done with the assistance of the home.

Teachers should explain when, how, and to what extent parents can participate to make homework a meaningful experience. Home activities can also serve to broaden experiences, stimulate new interests, and create a bond between home and school. Students should be encouraged to do voluntary homework such as working on school projects, listening to worthwhile music, assuming home responsibilities, and participating in community activities.

It is reasonable to expect the amount of homework to increase as the student progresses through the educational program.

The following guidelines will assure that homework activities result in a satisfying session:• Assignments should be on the student's independent level.• A general rule of thumb is 10 minutes per grade level.• Directions should be clear and precise.• Copies should be clear and readable.

Homework assignments should not exceed 75 minutes in length per day and are to be corrected when they are assigned.

Each grade level will develop a homework policy to be submitted to the Principal

NOTE: In order to help students concentrate on the task at hand, homework

assignments should be lessened or suspended during the week(s) of standardized testing such as the administration of FCAT testing, S.A.T. etc.

INSURANCEEach fall, parents are given the opportunity to enroll children in a school insurance plan. This can cover a child for up to twenty-four (24) hours or merely during school hours. This is desirable to parents since the school is not legally liable for school day accidents.

INSTRUCTIONAL TELEVISION/DISTANT LEARNINGThere is an excellent selection of programs provided by the BECON Broward Education Communications Network. Teachers are encouraged to utilize these programs. Lesson plans must include the times and titles of the programs being viewed.

Students are not to do play, talk, draw, etc. while watching BECON. The BECON program is the "teacher". These procedures are to be taught to the students as you would teach your expectations for every other procedure of the day.

INTERCOM

We will make a concerted effort to limit the number of interruptions into your classroom. Information of interest to the entire school will be made during the A.M. Morning Show or at dismissal time.

Please instruct students that they are not to answer a call over the intercom. Also teach them that they are to become quiet immediately upon hearing a call over the intercom.

INTERIM REPORTSBoard Policy 5104 states, "not later than midway between marking periods, an interim report shall be sent to the parents of students who are experiencing difficulty, including, but not limited to the following:

Failing grades (F grades or 3/A.C.)A drop of two or more grades (i.e. going from a B to a D, from a C to an F)Unacceptable behaviorA.C. (Area of Concern) or grade of 3Excessive absences or tardiness

In the event that a student's behavior and/or grades drop after the regular interim report issuance date, the teacher(s) involved must send an interim report before that student can receive the A.C./3, F or the lower grades on his/her report card.

Forms can be obtained from the office and on Pinnacle. It is most important that this report be signed and returned to school. It is the teacher's responsibility to make sure the parent has signed the report. If the interim is not signed and returned, a copy should be sent in the U.S. mail or with the school social worker or community liaison.

One copy of the interim report should be placed in the student's cum folder, one sent home, and one kept in the teacher's files. Following the interim report, a parent conference is an opportunity to enlist the assistance of parents before the end of the marking period.

A copy of the interim report must be attached to the report card when submitted to the principal for review. Report cards with a grade of F. A.C./3 or a drop of two letter grades in academics and/or behavior must have an interim report or they will be returned to the teacher for correction.

Special/Magnet area teachers are responsible for their own interim reports. However, if a classroom teacher is sending an interim home, the special area teacher's report may be included.

Do not expect to give a student an interim report immediately before the report cards are submitted to the office.

See the Calendar section of the Handbook for dates of when interims will be sent home. Good Interim

Reports provide support for students and enhance parental support.

KEYSKeys are issued to a teacher and are not to be used by anyone but the teacher unless approved by the principal. Teachers are financially responsible for any lost key during the year. Please keep them in a safe place, as lock keys are expensive to replace and are a security problem. It is a violation of School Board Policy to duplicate school keys.

Teachers are not to allow students to use their keys.

LAMINATING

Laminating equipment and materials are available in the media center for your use. Laminating film is expensive. Due to the cost, we must be selective on what we laminate.

Approved Instructional Items:

• Teacher made materials that will be frequently used (handled) and reused by students.• Commercially made materials that are not fully laminated and frequently used (handled)

and reused by students.

Non-approved Items:

• Items that will be displayed on bulletin boards, etc.• Commercially made materials that are already fully reinforced with laminate.• Student work samples.

Required forms will be completed by the ESOL contact person and will be maintained in the student's cumulative folders. Strategies used with these students must be identified in the teacher's plan book. Folders must be updated yearly.

LESSON PLANS AND CLASS RECORD BOOKS Plan books and grade books are important parts of documentation and every teacher must have both. Lesson plan and grade books maintained on the computer are encouraged.

The organization and contents of the plan books are the responsibility and concern of the individual teacher. Plan books should be kept current and available for review when requested and it is necessary that plan books be kept one week in advance. Plan books are considered a legal document and can be examined at any time.Sunshine State Standards and ESOL strategies must be documented for each subject. State-mandated curriculum subjects must also be documents. Group designation, basal text and supplementary materials should be listed.

These specific details should be included weekly: (See Forms for Lesson Plan Checklist)

LOST AND FOUND Remind students to put their names on ALL their belongings. Lost and Found articles like clothing lunch boxes, book bags, etc. are kept in the cafeteria. Smaller articles like glasses, jewelry, watches, etc. are kept in the office. All lost items should be turned in promptly. Sduden4s should be encouraged to check for their lost items.

LOUNGE POLICYThe use of the school lounge is primarily restricted to School Board employees.

Conversation concerning students in our school is confidential and has no place in a group conversation even in the staff lounge, or hallways.

Each person should help keep the lounge clean. The refrigerator will be cleaned out on Fridays and perishable food discarded.

SPECIAL TEACHERS

Special teachers are hired to implement programs, which are necessary to provide all students a balanced educational program. If special teachers are held accountable for their programs and are expected to plan activities and materials for anticipated numbers of students, then it is ³mportant that all students attend these classes the designated time. Students are to arrive as a group at the designated time to all scheduled special classes.

Send all students to designated Special classes. Not allowing students to attend; World Languages, P.E., Media and Science etc. as a punishment is not allowed. Keeping students away from these classes to finish homework or classroom work is inconsistent with the nature of homework and class work. Homework is to be done at home. Class work is to be done in class. You must reinforce the importance of the special classes to make them important for the students.Be sure to notify the Special teachers in writing if your grade group will be going on a field trip, which will affect that special schedule. Remember, teachers of specials are responsible for grading pupil progress in the special areas, and by all means Specials teachers are expected to do the same.

Teachers are to walk students to and from their Special classes. When arriving at the classroom, make sure that the teacher acknowledges the "receipt" of the class.

Students who attend speech, ESE, etc. are to adhere to the schedule provided by the resource teacher. A monitoring process must be utilized to insure that students report to their classes in a timely manner. Students must be cognizant of the fact that their presence on campus is monitored at all times. There is to be no possible way for a student to roam around campus when they are to

be at an assigned class.

MAILBOXES

Staff members are to check their mailboxes each morning, during planning periods, and before leaving each day. Telephone messages will be placed in mailboxes. All materials must be removed each day.

The items in a person's mailbox are personal. Going into someone's mailbox is a violation of privacy.

MAINTENANCE PERSONNEL

All School Board of Broward County (SBBC) maintenance personnel are to have an identification badge, which indicates a picture and their name. Even with such identification no person is to enter your classroom unless you have been notified by the school office that such person is to be present. You must notify the school office in the event that a person enters your classroom and you have not been advised of this person's presence. This included SBBC maintenance personnel. If the work of maintenance personnel interferes with instruction, notify administration immediately.

MATERIALS AND SUPPLIES/REIMBURSEMENTSNo faculty member may purchase any item for which he/she expects reimbursement without approval from the principal. Requests for supplies and materials not available within the school may be made at any time to the principal. Requests will be granted or denied on the basis of available funds.

All materials and supplies purchased with school or PTA funds become property of the school. Teachers leaving the school or transferring to different grade levels or programs are to leave all materials and supplies in the room they occupied during the school year.

MEDIA CENTERThe Media Center is the resource hub of the school. It will house materials for students, staff, and parents.

The goal of the Media Center is to support, compliment, and expand the instructional program of the school. Library media services and resources support the curriculum and seek to meet the varying needs of all learners. The library media center provides a learning environment, which promotes inquiry, creativity, self-direction, recreational reading and communication of ideas through both print, and non-print media.

Teachers may check out materials desired for a period of two weeks. Teachers are responsible for materials checked out to them and it is the teacher's responsibility to make sure that materials are properly returned when due.

1. Use quiet voices.

2. Keep hands, feet, and objects to yourself.

3. Follow directions immediately.

4. Treat others with respect.

Please do not use the Media Center as a part of your Center rotation.

Classroom EquipmentEach classroom has been issued equipment to meet all teaching needs. It is checked-out to the classroom and not the teacher; therefore, it is important that equipment not be exchanged or loaned to other classrooms. If additional equipment is needed, you may request it from the media center. An equipment inventory will be taken at the end of the school year to account for each item of equipment.

Media WorkroomThe following equipment is available to teachers and staff to help prepare materials. If you need assistance in using a machine, we will be happy to assist you. Your help is needed in keeping the media workroom neat by picking up paper scraps and other debris from the counters after each use. Please do not leave it for someone else to do.

Ellison Letter Presses Two sizes are available with a wide assortment of die cuts. Please return the die cuts to their storage rack when finished and clean up the area. Construction paper is available for use in the drawers across form the presses.

Laminator There are two laminator for staff to use. Special care must be taken when using either of these machines. They need to be constantly monitored to check that the laminating film is coming out of the back of the machine and not wrapping around the rollers. Never allow the machine to operate when the "end of the roll" sign appears as this will cause damage to the rollers. The machines take between 5 and 10 minutes to heat---please do not turn on to heat and leave the area!

Please turn the machine off and notify the media staff when the laminating film is at the end of the roll. It will be replaced as soon as possible after the machine has cooled. Because we have had the machines damaged recently, you must be in-serviced on the proper use of the machine before you are allowed to use them.

Poster Maker This machine can enlarge pictures and make banners. If necessary to use this machine, please

PARAPROFESSIONALSParaprofessionals are available to assist you with your program and the needs of your students. The number of aides is determined by budget restrictions and special needs. Under the supervision of instructional staff, paraprofessionals assist in the preparation of instructional materials, supervise students in the cafeteria, work with individuals and small groups of children, supervise student arrival and dismissal from school, and other responsibilities. Their main function, however, is to assist with the reinforcement of skills. Schedules for paraprofessionals will be arranged by Administration. Please be aware that aides should not be asked to copy any materials, which are covered by copyright laws.

Paraprofessionals are not to be solely responsible for classes. A teacher must be in a supervisory position of his/her class at all times.

Pompano Beach Elementary School Handbook – Section C -43

Page 44: ACCIDENTS - Broward County Public Web viewWhen a student is injured on school grounds or a field trip, the teacher or person in charge shall immediately advise the office of the injury

Paraprofessionals are not to contact parents about student behavior, etc. This is the responsibility of the classroom teacher.

Teachers are to work with the paraprofessional and train him/her in the following:

Working with individual students Behavior techniques, which are in compliance with the school-wide discipline plan. Scoring, papers. Record keeping. Conducting direct instruction math and reading groups. Reinforcing skills needing remediation.

Supervisory teachers are to monitor compliance with schedules and work assignments. If a problem should occur with a paraprofessional, the first action is to be taken by the teacher. The paraprofessional is to be advised of the area of concern and the actions, which needs to be taken to rectify the problem. If the concern continues, the grade chairperson is to assist. A written record of all discussions is to be maintained continues, the grade chairperson is to assist. A written record of all discussions is to be maintained.

In the event that the situation continues after the intervention of the grade chairperson, the next step for non-compliance or failure to improve is to contact administration.

PARENT CONFERENCESTeachers are encouraged to make parents feel welcome and arrange appointments for visiting or for conferences. Parents are being asked to prearrange classroom visits with the teacher 24 hours in advance. Visiting the school enables parents to know their child's school and teachers better. It is only through the home and the school working together that we can most successfully help the child.

At least two conferences are to be held for each student each year. School Board Policy #5104 states "Conferences with parents or guardians are required as part of the reporting system. Teachers will request at least two (2) conferences per year per student. The school shall request a conference between the classroom teacher and the parent on or before May 1 for each student being considered for retention." At this conference teachers are to discuss the possibility of retention and document such on the conference sheet.

In the event that a conference is scheduled and the parent/guardian fails to attend, evidence of an honest attempt on the part of the teacher to have these conferences must be documented and placed in the child's cum folder. An honest attempt can be evidenced when the teacher makes at least four attempts to schedule a conference. Documentation of such requests must be placed in the child's cumulative folder, and recorded on the conference log.

Conference forms should be prepared before the parent arrives for a conference. If a parent does not attend at the scheduled time and does not notify the office of the need to reschedule the meeting, "no show" is to be written at the top of the conference sheet . Attach the conference request sheet to this completed conference sheet.

Telephone conferences are to be documented on a conference form. Indicate that the conference was conducted on the telephone. Duplicate a copy and send the NCR form home or parent/guardian signature. When the parent/guardian returns the signed copy, the duplicated copy may be destroyed. In the event that the parent/guardian does not return the signed NCR conference form, the duplicated copy is to be placed in the child's cum folder with a notation that the parent did not return the signed. sheet. Include attempted to call a parent and reached only an answering machine, a busy signal, etc. This is documentation. All requests for conferences must indicate a specific date and time. Do not schedule conferences in the middle of the day when you are teaching children. You may schedule conferences during your planning period, if you wish.

A conference log is to be maintained by every teacher. This log will be provided by administration and is to be kept in the teacher's plan book. Conference logs must be submitted quarterly with report cards.

PAYCHECKSPaycheck stubs can be picked up between 12:00 and 3:00 from the Bookkeeper’s office. Checks will be placed in an envelope with employee's name in alphabetical order. Each employee must initial envelope next to appropriate payroll day.

PHYSICAL EDUCATION/INSTRUCTIONAL RECESSAttire: Clothing worn to school is usually acceptable attire for physical education classes. Encourage students to wear shoes suitable for running, etc.

Equipment: Physical education equipment may be checked out to individual teachers for use during recess. They will be included on the end of the year checkout list.

PLAYGROUND SAFETY AND BEHAVIORIn order to prevent accidents and maintain a safe playground, the following are some uniform guidelines to protect both the students and staff from undue strain and lawsuits:

Free Play - When your class is allowed free play time, make sure they stay in the same area. Students may not play contact games during free time.

Games - Play one game at a time so that you can supervise the entire class. It is difficult to watch two or more games being played in different areas.

Teacher Observation Position - Please remain standing at all times on the playground. If more than one teacher is out, position yourself for better control of the children and activities. Keep your total attention on the children.

Accidents - Make sure all accidents, no matter how minor, are reported to the office. If the accident is recorded, you will have to sign as the witness and supervising teacher.

Pompano Beach Elementary School Handbook – Section C -45

Page 46: ACCIDENTS - Broward County Public Web viewWhen a student is injured on school grounds or a field trip, the teacher or person in charge shall immediately advise the office of the injury

Control - Make sure you keep your class in control at all times. Don't place yourself in jeopardy by taking an uncontrollable group to an area, which could lead to problems.

1. Rough play is not allowed on the playground.2. Students may not use playground without supervision.3. Use playground equipment appropriately.4. Playground area may not be used before or after school by students.5. Stay within your assigned area and follow teacher directions.6. Please be sure to report to the office or send a schedule to the office of when

will be at the playground.

Teachers and staff are not to take chairs outside when children are being supervised during outside activity. Active supervision demands the teacher /aide's attention. This activity can take place indoors or outdoors and must consist of planned games and activities. The teacher is responsible for the safety of the students and should actively supervise them at all times. Recess is not necessary on days when your class is scheduled for P.E.

During your recess time, please keep your students clear of the P.E. class that is in session. If too many classes are on the playground, please select a different recess time or select an indoor activity. No more than two classes should be on equipment at a time. Recess times should be on file in the office for each class.

REPORT CARDS - Student report cards are to comply with School Board Policy #5104.Teachers should use the Report Card from PINNICLE.

Report cards are sent each nine weeks to all students in grades 1-5. Kindergarten students will receive report cards at the end of the second, third and fourth quarter. Grades from special teachers and exceptional education teachers are due to the classroom on the workday immediately following the end of the grading period.

Cards are to be checked for compliance by the grade chairperson before they are submitted to the office. The pink copy of the interim report is to be attached to the report card.

All areas of the report cards are to be properly completed before report cards are submitted to the office. The only exception to this requirement is when the fourth quarter report cards are submitted to the office, the attendance will not be completed. This section is to be tallied on the last day of school. Estimates, etc. of attendance will not be accepted.

The principal/assistant principal will review all report cards before they are sent home.

The calendar shows the date on which the reporting period closes and the date on which report cards are to be issued. As soon as possible after the close of the grading period, report cards should be turned into the principal to be checked before going home. Since the report cards are NCR paper, please use your best penmanship and keep errors to a minimum so report cards are as neat as possible.

In reporting student performance for third through fifth grade, symbols (A, B, C, D, F) are used which represent the equivalent numerical grades as shown below:

"A" Superior Progress 100-90"B" Above Average Progress 80-89"C" Average Progress 79-70"D" Below Average Progress 69-60"F" Failure 59 or below

Instructional Levels must be indicated with a numerical value as it correlates with the student’s level.

Teachers will use the numerical scale to determine a letter grade. Teachers will use the numerical scale to determine a letter grade. Letter grades will be placed in the grade book.

Plus and minus signs for academic grades shall not be used in marking the report card.

First and Second grade report cards should reflect student progress with:

"1" = Consistently "

2" = Developing "

3" = Area of Concern

"X" = Not evaluated

Pompano Beach Elementary School Handbook – Section C -49

Page 50: ACCIDENTS - Broward County Public Web viewWhen a student is injured on school grounds or a field trip, the teacher or person in charge shall immediately advise the office of the injury

When report card envelopes are returned, be certain to check for parent's request for conferences and/or comments.

Teachers are reminded that reporting procedures accomplish more when they are completed with care and reflect positive information concerning the student and any progress shown..

See the Calendar section of the Handbook for official dates when Report Cards will be sent home.

SPECIAL NOTE: School Board Policy stipulates that a student must be in attendance twenty- five (25) days in a Broward County School during a quarter in order to receive grades for that period. If a student transfers from school "x" and has been there 13 school days and at Pompano Beach Elementary 12 days, we are required to give a report card. See the Data Processor or Guidance Counselor if you need assistance.

RESOURCE CLASSES

Resource classes (i.e., Speech, VE, Counseling Groups) are an integral part of the student's day. Students should not be kept from these classes and it is imperative that they be sent on time. Exceptions to this would be noted if a student has an Academic Improvement Plan (AIP) and parents have been notified.

RETENTIONDecisions concerning promotion or retention are to be made after due consideration by the teacher and the principal. The policy of our school system is that total growth of the individual child forms the basis for promotion practices.

Emphasis shall be placed yearly on the mastery of skills in reading, writing, and mathematics. Likewise, student size, maturity, and parent attitude must also be considered before recommendation for retention.

Parents must be notified of the possibility for retention by May 1. This notification is to be done via a parent/teacher conference. This conversation is to be noted on the parent/teacher conference form each time it is discussed. Promotional outlook is indicated on report cards beginning in the second quarter.

The Collaborative Problem Solving Team will convene to discuss the reasons for retention. The teacher is to actively participate in this committee. The committee's responsibility is to provide support and additional information to the teacher as he-she makes the decision to promote or retain a student.

2. Supervision of pupils: Instructional personnel are responsible for the general well-being of children entrusted to them. This necessitates proper procedures of supervision and the maintenance of a desirable climate for learning in each teacher's area of responsibility. During playground supervision, it is especially important to keep the students in one area and visible to avoid and prevent injury or accidents.

3. Official work hours for instructional personnel are 7:30 a.m. to 3:00 p.m.4. Each member of the instructional staff of the school shall carry a fair share of the total

SAFETYAny toys or objects which may cause an injury or distraction have no place in school and must be left at home. These items include, but are not limited to: knives, guns, caps, bullets, hard balls, toy weapons, radios, pagers, recorders, telephones, headphones, neck key chains, etc. If brought to school, these items are to be confiscated by the teacher.

*Remember to keep these confiscated items locked and in a safe place or send to the office, in the event a parent wishes to recover them. You are responsible for items you confiscate.

Please discuss school safety with your students to make travel to school and home a safe and pleasant experience. A review of some of the Accident Prevention Education Material is in order since the community is growing, the traffic volume is becoming heavier, and the potential of accidents occurring has increased. Review pedestrians and bicycle safety with your children. Safety procedures need to be studied and discussed at school, and it is suggested that you emphasize the need for "traffic awareness."

BICYCLES Helmets must be worn. Ride ONE ONLY on a bicycle. TOWING is

recognized as being very dangerous and forbidden.

Obey all of the rules of the road which include: stop signs, yield signs, traffic lights, etc.

Do not ride in the road. Dismount and walk bicycle across intersection and on school grounds.

PEDESTRIANS

Cross at the crossing guard if one is available. Walk on sidewalks where provided. If there is no sidewalk, walk single file on the left

edge of the road (facing traffic.) Cross at comers when you are certain that traffic

has stopped, giving the right of way to the pedestrian. Obey the traffic signs and signals. Walk only on

green. Stop at stop signs. Look in all directions before crossing, making sure

that the motorist sees you and knows what you intend to do.

If you suspect any suspicious behavior please contact the front office ASAP! If you need assistance with a student, notify an administrator immediately.

SELF REPORTING

School Board Policy 2405 requires the Self-Reporting of arrests or final judgment of criminal offense to the Office of Professional Standards and SIU. See Section K for appropriate form.

SMOKING

It is unlawful for anyone under the age of 18 to smoke tobacco in, on, or within 1000 feet of a public or private elementary, middle, or secondary school between the hours of 6:00am and midnight. This provision does not apply to persons in a moving vehicle or a private residence and authorizes law enforcement officers to issue citations to anyone violating the provisions of this act. Violations will constitute a civil infraction, punishable by a fine not to exceed $25.

SPEECH AND DRESS

Speech and dress are as important to teaching children as they are to impressing adults. We feel that teachers who represent high standards of education and culture neither dress sloppily nor speak poorly. Children learn through seeing and listening as well as reading. Children tend to imitate adults. Teachers need to set a good example for the youngsters to follow. Teachers are judged in the eyes of other teachers and the public by what they wear. Be conventional when dressing for work. Dress appropriately for the context of the days teaching.

A better teaching, learning, health, and safety environment exists with students when they are dressed and groomed in such a way that they reflect pride in themselves and the school. Therefore, we strongly encourage students to dress appropriately.

Review the Student Code of Conduct to familiarize yourself and your students with the stipulations on dress. Please be sure that students have an understanding about what clothing is and is not appropriate.

We are a MANDATROY Unified Dress school. Teachers are to monitor student dress. If a student wears clothing in violation of the dress code, the teacher is to contact the guidance counselor. A letter will be provided for you to send home to parents of students who violate the designated dress code. Parents may be asked to bring a change of clothes to school for any student who wears clothing which violates the rules. This will be done when a student's attire is extremely offensive, or - if the child chronically violates the dress code.

Pompano Beach Elementary School Handbook – Section C -56

Page 57: ACCIDENTS - Broward County Public Web viewWhen a student is injured on school grounds or a field trip, the teacher or person in charge shall immediately advise the office of the injury

The last day of every school week is Spirit Day. Students and staff are encouraged to wear school colors and/or school tee-shirts. Students and teachers are encouraged to wear a school tee-shirt or school colors on field trips.

The best way to establish appropriate dress and grooming is to model these behaviors. Though there is no dress code for teachers, you are highly encouraged to dress in a professional manner.

STUDENT ACTIVITIES

All student activities (parties, assemblies, etc.) must receive administrative approval. This involves activities during the school day, after school and on weekends.

Please note the following requirements for giving a program during the school year.

1. All major activity dates are to be set with the administration and posted on the master activity calendar in the office.

2. The date, number of students and sponsoring group must be clearly stated.3. Practice dates and/or a list of chaperones must accompany the initial request.4. It is generally desirable to invite parents or other interested persons to assemblies.5. Notify the custodian and cafeteria manager of your plans.

STUDENT ARTICULATION CARDSAt the end of the school year teachers are to complete a student articulation card for each child. The levels marked on the card should be the highest academic level successfully completed by the student.

Also include on the card any information which would assist in the most beneficial placement of the child for the next school year. This should include, but is not limited to an indication noting shyness, discipline problems, possible ESE tendencies, students who should not be in the same class, students referred for testing, etc. These cards are to be shared only with other teachers. They are never to be shown to parents, nor placed in cum folders.

STUDENT FOLDERS All teachers are to maintain a folder for each student. This folder is to contain the items listed below:

Discipline Code Acknowledgment Form. Emergency Contact Information Copies of interim reports, parent/teacher conferences, and requests for parent/teacher

conferences. Copies of any notes sent to and received from parents. Copies of any referrals, clinic passes, and accident reports. Signed class and school discipline acknowledgment form. Signed field trip elimination letter. Copies of all graded work that has been recorded in the gradebook.

These folders are to be utilized for parent/teacher conferences, retention committees, and conferences with administration. Folders must be readily available for review by your team leader, and administration.

When teachers receive any changes in student information, (new address, phone number, emergency contacts, etc.) please submit to Administration for update of computer files.

STUDENT WITHDRAWALSA child is officially withdrawn from a classroom only upon notification from the office/Registrar. At that time the teacher is to note the withdrawal on his/her attendance record. This includes notations made in the teacher roll book and on the student attendance card.

The teacher is to make sure that the following items are completed and turned into the office within two days of notification of official withdrawal. The folders will be reviewed by the office and Guidance before they are forwarded.

CUM FOLDER Check the front of the folder for accuracy

NOTICE OF TRANSFER Fill in the teacher section of the Notice of Transfer received from the office and return it to the office by the indicated due date..

The report card is included in the cum folder for both types of transfer. Even if a child has not been in attendance for the required 25 days, it would be professionally courteous to give the receiving teacher some idea of the child's academic performance. This can be accomplished by a note to the teacher which should be attached to the report card.

PARENT/TEACHER CONFERENCE FORMSA copy of all conference forms should be sent to the office for inclusion in the cum folder when it is forwarded to the new school.

SUBSTITUTE PLANSThe grade chairpersons are to monitor and coordinate substitute folders. When a grade level has a substitute teacher, the grade chairperson (or another teacher at the grade level if the chair is absent) is to assist the teacher in locating the sub folder. In case there is no substitute folder, an emergency folder must be on file in the Assistant Principal's Office. There should be enough work included in this emergency folder for at least (3) days. Emergency Substitute folders will be housed with the Assistant Principal.

If at any time you feel that a substitute performed unsatisfactorily, please inform the office of such. Take into consideration the following when evaluating the performance of a substitute:

TDA's are required for all workshops, in-service meetings, conferences, and conventions or any activity that requires a substitute. A TDA is also required when funds are being requested from our school's budget. Staff members going on a field trip need to complete a TDA.

Completed TDA request forms must be given to the principal for approval three (3) days prior to the workshop/event. A copy of the workshop, or conference flyer should be attached.

TESTING PROGRAMFormal and informal testing is done each year in an effort to assess needs and to obtain information regarding academic strengths and/or weaknesses of each child. These results are used, along with other information, to strengthen, revise, and/or modify our instructional program. If you have any questions regarding the testing program, please contact Testing Coordinator .

TEXTBOOK Textbooks are chosen by individual schools from State adopted book lists. Purchase orders are handled through a central textbook center. Each school receives a yearly budget for purchase of books based upon enrollment.

Mrs. Barton is the textbook coordinator and will assist you in filling your textbook needs. You MUST have enough textbooks for every student. If you do not, notify the textbook, immediately.

Teachers need to keep a list of textbooks assigned to students. When a student withdraws, make every effort to recover all textbooks. Textbook inventory is completed at the end of the school year.

TORNADO WATCH (FORECAST ANNOUNCEMENT)See Section F

TRUANCY (BTIP) The Broward county Public Schools and the State Attorney's Office have initiated the Broward Truancy Intervention program (BTIP) and Pompano Beach Elementary School has been selected to participate in this program. The intent of the program is to prevent truancy (unexcused absences). Student's attendance will be monitored on a daily basis, and unexcused absences will be noted on the attendance cards with a" U". When notes or calls from parents come in, "U" will be changed to "F".

Should a student have a series of unexcused absences, the State Attorney's Office will be notified. The State Attorney’s Office may take appropriate action u to and including criminal prosecution of the parent or guardian. Exact procedures are outlined in the BTIP manual.

TUTORING

It is expected by the School Board that teachers will exercise every effort to help children before recommending that parents engage a tutor. In order to avoid a conflict of interest, no teacher shall receive compensation for tutoring a pupil who is in his/her class nor may public school facilities be used for that purpose.

UNSAFE CONDITIONS

Parents and staff are directed to report unsafe conditions to the office immediately. The head facilities serviceperson will evaluate the condition and make the necessary recommendations/approvals.

VALUABLES

Valuable items should not be brought to school by faculty, staff or students. Personal belongings, such as purses should be kept under lock and key. Bicycles are locked by students with chains and locks. In the event of a lost or stolen article, the office is to be notified.

VANDALISM/PROPERTY DAMAGE

All members of the instructional staff should consider it their responsibility to report any incident of property damage by pupils or others so that restitution can be gained and repairs made. This pertains to the damage of equipment, materials, furniture, or to the building property. Florida School Law Section 231.09, part 9, states that instructional personnel need to "see that the school building and all things pertaining thereto are not unnecessarily defaced or injured."

Pompano Beach Elementary School Handbook – Section C -63

Page 64: ACCIDENTS - Broward County Public Web viewWhen a student is injured on school grounds or a field trip, the teacher or person in charge shall immediately advise the office of the injury

Here are some helpful hints to help limit vandalism:

Be sure you lock the classroom door when leaving the room. Students should never have possession of the classroom keys. No money should be kept in the classroom. Do not bring large sums of money to school with you. Purses should be kept out of sight,

in a locked desk drawer, file cabinet, or car trunk. Notify the main office whenever you see a stranger or older student on school grounds. Instill ownership for the building, its contents, school materials and supplies. Make it a priority that students keep their areas clean. Any damage that is not accidentally caused to the building by a student or staff member

that is not considered routine wear and tear is vandalism.

VIDEOS

The Broward County Schools have access to a variety of films and filmstrips through a Film Library. The media center has a full listing of all available films and filmstrips approved by the county. If a teacher would like to order a film, the proper request form must be filled out completely and given to the media specialist. Films and filmstrips MUST FOLLOW THE CURRICULUM and MUST BE RATED "G". The use of films and filmstrips is encouraged as long as it accompanies a unit of study.

The classroom presentation of video tapes taken from home television is explicitly denied by the Federal Copyright Law. Video tapes rented from local video stores must first be approved by administration and support the current classroom curriculum in "face-to-face" instruction.ALL VIDEO TAPES MUST BE RATED G. “WHEN YOU’RE FINISHED” ACTIVITIES

Every teacher is to have a posted list of activities that students are to do when they have finished seatwork. Since all students take varying amounts of time to accomplish a task, it is vitally important that every student know what to do when finished. Many discipline problems can be avoided by keeping students engaged in a learning activity.

All activities are to be educationally based, and provide practice for skills already taught. Dittos are an ineffective means of providing practice unless they are relevant to the skill and are not "drill and kill" sheets. Great Activities: Mountain Math, Ongoing Computer rotation, Math Board Games – cards; dominoes-phase 10.

If you need further suggestions on appropriate activities for "When You're Finished" activities, a workshop can be arranged through the Reading Resource.

WORKERS' COMPENSATION PROCEDURE

Any work-related action that may require medical attention must be reported to the office on the day of the accident. Specific instructions must be followed in filing any claim and only doctors approved by the Workers' Compensation Insurance should be seen for treatment. It is imperative that these reports be filed immediately as they are subject to a $100 per day fine.

WORKDAY PROTOCOL (PLANNING DAYS)

Workday hours are from 7:30 AM to 3:00 PM with one hour for lunch. An Agenda for the Teacher planning Day activities will be outlined on the Pompano Beach Elem Administrative Calendar for that particular week. Please feel free to dress in comfortable attire. Teachers are expected to call in if they are sick or taking a personal day.

XEROX/LAMINATIING MACHINES & OFFICE COMPUTERS The photocopier is available for teacher use via Production Room. Please do not run off materials for the entire year.
