Example caseUnit 1 (Tractor- Trailer, 2 occupants) was travelling slowly fromnortheast to southwest on the right lane of 6 lane dividedexpressway after being recovered from a previous accident. Unit 2(SUV, 5 occupants) was travelling in the same lane behind Unit 1.

Due to absence of rear tail-lamps / reflectors on Unit 1 and sincethere were no warning about previous accident, Unit 2 failed tonotice Unit 1 on time. Unit 2 tried to avoid by braking but finallyhad a front-rear underride impact with Unit 1.

Post-impact, both Unit 1 and Unit 2 rested near the point ofimpact in the right- most lane. The 5 occupants of Unit 2 weretransported to hospital due to perceived serious injuries out ofwhich 2 occupants later succumbed to injuries. Unit 1 occupantswere not injured.

STEP 3:

a. Using Access, link Accident table to Accident Event Sequence Table.

b. For the filtered data in Accident table for Kind of Accident as ‘Leaving the carriageway’ and First Crash Configuration as ‘Object,’ analyze the OBJCONT (Object contacted) variable where Event number is 1. We choose Event number as 1 since we are interested in only the first crash configuration for the purpose of this analysis.
