Appliqué Sealing IronUse the appliqué sealing iron with a hotmelt adhesive to hold an appliqué inplace and for stability. An adhesive filmsuch as E-Zee Heat Seal # 9383 willwork well with minimum heat andpressure.

How to Select the Right NeedleChoosing the proper needle depends upon the type of thread,

the type of fabric, and the result desired. Choosing the proper sizeand point configuration will affect the quality of the embroidery. Agood “rule of thumb” to remember is that the thickness of thethread will determine which size needle eye to use, while thefabric, or substrate, embroidered on will determine whether to usea ballpoint or sharp needle. For general embroidering using 40weight thread, the chart below shows a choice of three needles.The #80/12 needle should be used on heavier substrates, such ascaps or canvas bags.

Fabric Type ConsiderationsFabric will also determine the needle type used. Generally, the

sizes in the chart below are for medium to heavy weight knits andmedium woven fabrics. If fine knits or fine wovens (such as lightweight t-shirts, golf shirts, piques or fleece) are used, it is best touse a ballpoint needle to prevent tearing of fibers on the garmentor fabric during the embroidery process. If a heavy wovenmaterial (such as denim, terrycloth or canvas) or the embroideryitself is very dense, use a sharp needle.

CHOOSING THE RIGHT NEEDLEFOR THE JOB

Appliqués offer embroiderers an effective way to reduce the stitchcount on an embroidered design. A "guide stitch" is used tooutline the edge of the cut appliqué shape. Once this is sewn, theshape to be appliquéd can be "tacked" down with the use of anappliqué iron and a hot melt adhesive such as E-Zee Heat Seal #9383. A quick, low pressure "tack" with the appliqué iron willprepare the appliqué material for stitching by holding it in place.If more stabilizing is required, the appliqué iron can be used forpositioning and “tacking” down any of the E-Zee fusible backings.

Madeira Large Eye NeedlesMadeira Large eye string polishedneedles create a finer needle that canbe used with a thicker thread. Precisionmanufactured in Germany, thesestainless steel needles run in mostmachines to create superb embroideryworkmanship with fewer thread orneedle breaks. The larger elongatedeye can fit a wider range of threadweights without increasing the needlethickness or size of the pierce hole in afabric.

Schmetz needles are available inStandard or Large Eyes and Ballpoint orSharp tips. Standard needles havethicker side eye walls that help reduceneedle deflection. The longer tip to eyelength helps pierce the material agreater distance.

Titanium needles are Rust Free formore surface durability in humidconditions. They have 3-5 times the lifeof regular needles, are stronger thanstainless steel, and ideal for use withthicker, heavier or denser fabrics.

Teflon needles are coated to createless friction (run cooler) as they passthrough fabrics so stitching is smoothand uniform.

Madeira Flat-Sided needles have aflat side instead of a round shank that isneeded for some brands of single headmachines. Flat shanks help line up theNeedle Eye so the thread passes in a“dead center” line. An off centerposition may have a negative impact onperformance.

Madeira's Automatic Frame System ( AFS ) is an "intelligent", endlessframe system that enables an embroiderer to increase automationand become more efficient in producing badge and logo styleembroidery. It must be attached to the machine by a technician, butonce properly calibrated and brackets are in place, it can be used orremoved in seconds.

E-Zee PreFrames, similar to continuous feed printing forms, consistof paper-framed film that is strong enough to hold the embroideredimage, but pliable enough to allow the finished design to be"popped" out of the plastic film by hand. The embroiderable surfaceof each frame measures 4" x 4", allowing multiple small sized logosto be done on a single frame.
