HELLO &WELCOMEOur sixth Lancaster Jazz Festival and, by far, the most ambitious yet.

2016 sees us expand into new territory and hand over the reins to the country’s emerging jazz artists like never before. In a complete first for us we’ve commissioned our headline concert, giving it over to the astonishing baritone saxophonist Cath Roberts who tore the festival apart with Word of Moth at the end of last year. She’s currently writing a completely brand new work whilst bringing together a completely brand new 10 piece band, sourced from around Europe, ready to premier in The Round Theatre on Saturday 17th.

In a similar vein, we continue our annual Youth Jazz Commission, awarded by our members to rising star guitarist Billy Marrows with a super interesting Gamelan inspired octet set. We also return to Lancaster Brewery, welcoming back saxophonists from the very first Lancaster Jazz Festival now they’ve become national jazz superstars. And we’re back in Sun Square and The Hall for the weekend with more amazing musicians, more great coffee, and more solo cello sets than ever before.

Come make a festival with us!

- Matt Robinson, artistic director

Quite possibly the hardest working musician on the UK jazz scene right now Cath Roberts has established a reputation over the last 10 years for mean baritone saxophone playing and impressive writing. Specialising in compositions that mix written fragments with graphic notation, exploring the balance between freedom and structure. A mixing of musical territories from free jazz with tightly notated forms, deep grooves to soundscape-esk textures.

In addition to her own work Cath is a member of various critically acclaimed outfits from the Madworth Sax Quartet to the MJF commissioned, Anton Hunter’s

Article XI to collaborative quartet Word of Moth and far more… On top of all this, when not writing or performing Cath is co-founder of LUME, the London-based platform for original music, and record label Luminous.

In a first for Lancaster Jazz Festival we’ve given our headline performance over to our Artist in Residence with a special commission to write and premier a brand new work in the beautiful Round Theatre at The Dukes. It’s going to be something really special.

LET SPIN

Let Spin are one of the most exciting bands in Europe at the moment featuring members of Melt Yourself Down, Led Bid, Beats & Pieces and Moss Project.

A truly original collective that play massive grooves with big solos, punk jazz with a distinct sound and a rare ability to move effortlessly from on-the-edge thrash to wistful reflection and into complex, quirky territory with ease and musicality.

A brand new and emerging improvisatory project from Newcastle with a vastly blended musical approach including Faye’s free improvisation background, Tobia’s more jazz standard style and Callum’s folk and traditional music knowledge. Together it creates a very dynamic sound that would not be out of place within the ECM sound world.

CRAIG SCOTT’S LOBOTOMY

The latest musical adventure to seep out of the fertile Leeds scene, the self-proclaimed creators and leading exponents of ‘medio-core’. Live improvisations are pulled apart, transformed by sound producing/altering paraphernalia and then intricately reconstructed with digital audio software. The result is a Frankenstein’s monster scaling the ‘uncanny valley’ ... something unlike anything else.

With a vast stockpile of original contemporary compositions written with influences from the likes of Shelia Jordan, Joni Mitchell, and Kate Bush, Zoë Gilby is seemingly constantly touring around the UK and internationally as possibly the best jazz vocalist at the moment. Currently working on new material that promises new soundscapes, effects and loops from an exceptional quartet that we’re excited to welcome back to Lancaster Jazz Festival.

Lancaster based Norwegian cellist, Maja creates beautiful solo music balancing melody, harmony and rhythm with more unconventional ideas of ambience, acoustics and concrete sound. A mix of composed material, improvisation and projected film her solo work has its origin in Shelter, a solo album composed and recorded in a disused oil tank in North Norway. Deeply moving yet experimental with an array of extended cello technique, meditative with a provocative stillness.

JAMES BECKWITH

Reeds-bass-drums trio somewhere between jazz, punk-rock and the avant-garde. Kicking up a sand storm of sonic possibilities, making music at the crux of what is learned and what is felt from the up and coming players of the Newcastle scene. Honest improvisations with compositions acting as collages of constantly evolving and open-ended soundscapes.

A new project that features a bucket-load of strong rhythmic tunes combined with a lyrical writing style with sounds akin to the work of Gerald Clayton and Robert Glasper. Noticeable inspirations ranging from New York contemporary jazz harmonies, Middle Eastern & Asian folk melodies, and dynamic hip hop inflected groove.

We close Lancaster Jazz Festival 2016 with a final set from our 2016 Artist in Residence, Cath Roberts.

The last three years have seen Manchester and London-based, collaborative duo, Ripsaw Catfish drawing upon a vast collection of pre-composed elements from within instant improvisation moments. The result being music that explores the boundary between pre-composed and in-the-moment-improvised music has gone on to see European tours, support from Sound And Music, and a second album out soon.

A chord-less quartet who formed to explore the possibilities and challenges afforded by the absence of a harmony instrument. This includes different approaches to improvisation, delving in particular into melodic and rhythmic ideas from Middle Eastern improvisation, with the chord-less set-up of the group being ideal for experimentation into certain scale theories. Sonny Rollins mixed with John Zorn perhaps.
