    EDUCATION CONTROL IN SOCIETY

    A VIEW FROM THE ASPECT OF ACCESS

    Formation of the human being as essential part of his nature is possible and

    necessary: possible by the malleability which presents since their birth, because

    they keeps with and opened mind for all that is around them; and is also necessary

    as in view of the fact that they are not born with a formed mind. Formation that at

    the start must be offered by their family and that later must be offered by the

    society with the education process. This is established by the Colombian

    constitution in the sixty seventh articles: The State, society and family are

    responsible for the education, to be compulsory from five to fifteen years of age

    and cover at a minimum, one year of preschool and nine of Basic Education. 1

    ow let!s suppose the family do their part correctly "it is necessary to consider that

    the parameters are different family by family, but anyhow we consider them as

    #correct$%. &o, is the social education doing its part correctly' To answer this

    (uestion it is necessary to examine the goal of the education process an more

    exactly to the topic that today moves me to write this text: access as a way of

    controlling society.

    ow, we have to take into consideration that the formal education is a process in

    which an individual discovers the world, across their maturation since the childhood

    to their adulthood, passing by different stages of development. The most

    noticeable is the biological development as you can see the growth of the

    individual; the cognitive that implies the development of the intelligence; the social

    in which the social relations are formed and the individual starts to identify

    themselves as a part of the society and find out their role which contains a purpose

    and usually a service to the community; sexual as part of the identification of

    oneself and of the others as sexual beings.

    This process has the goal to make the individual able to serve to their society. )ow

    does the individual serve to their society' The answer is a simple one; by

    producing, so then, the education prepares the individual as a tool which sooner o

    later have to be able to produce in their society; that is the dynamic of this game

    #a game of investment$. *n a society like Colombian the investment of time and

    money despite in other countries this is free. *t is because depending on the stage

    that a student achieves it re(uires a certain amount of money and time. The more

    investment, the more reaping of benefits. *t means that if you are able to become a

    doctor, so you will have more possibilities than the one who was not able to finish

    their studies or that was not able to attend to the university. +ossibilities that

    involve a better life (uality, like access to better health services, social benefits, a

    retirement, commodities, etc.

    ut the process depends on the access of an individual to the world of information,

    provided by the education and if this is the appropriated for their social context.

    Then it is necessary to elucidate the concept of access.

    -efine access ust as the provision of external tools, like a school installation, the

    teacher, a classroom, books, etc. is to reduce the perspective only to those

    elements ignoring that:$the individual looks for identity of life and of benefits for

    their on e!istence "page. /0%1.

    &o, there a big mistake at taking the individual is ust as an obect of production

    that is the only aspect in which the society is interested, setting aside the human

    aspect. 2 problem that has existed since the inception of the formal education, as

    evidence we can easily go back in time and see that still in the twentieth century

    and even with the rise of the scientific thinking in the human sciences the

    conception of the education was not other than the service to the society in terms

    of production only. 3e can see also that the role of the student in their own

    learning process is reduced to the minimum; as -urkheim the father of the modern

    sociology formulates. 4ean +iaget expresses the thinking of -urkheim with respect

    to the education:

    the norms of the society; for that the authority of the teacher accomplishes a fundamental

    part and the pupil is due to submit passively to their mandates$"page 71%7.

    This method is greatly inappropriate, because it hampers highly the participation of

    the student in their own education process, and furthermore it implies an almost

    null use of their own reasoning to (uestion the instructions given by the educator.

    Contrariwise the method that is the most suitable is that one which takes into

    account the individual capacities and the way of obtaining favorable results. *t

    means to take the individual as an integral being. &o, we consider an important

    aspect #diversity$ the state of widely varied, and the state of recogni8ing that every

    one is different and every one has their needs. ut also every one has their needs

    on their educative process and the education service can not give to all what they

    want. *t is not that the coverage is not the appropriate; it is ust that the access

    does not take into account the diversity.

    This is when we have to mention the #discrimination in the education coverage$ this

    referring to a national level, in which the institution in charge of providing education

    do not have the same standards, and are far away from the idea of

    homogeni8ation. ecause we easily see the great difference existent between

    institutions of private education and those of public education. 2nd it is not

    necessary to elucidate who attend to the private education and who attend to the

    public education. Those last, because of the economical problems have to face

    hard situations. we can summari8e all of them in one phrase:$if they study, they

    don6t eat$; this phrase that every day is closer to the reality, as we can see in

    recent researches that establish that: four of ten "olombians go to the school

    lacking breakfast#four of ten "olombian homes feel a certain grade of nutritional

    insecurity$a very extreme reality, that affects directly to the school development

    now we will see the exact importance of the breakfast in the school development in

    order to make wider our perception of this situation.

    The school stage is a part of the life of an individual in which suffer great chances

    as the type of biological, psychological, and social, and in which discovers their

    own capacities and possibilities. 3ith regard to the health as essential part of the

    student and as a need for a correct academic development it is necessary to

    evaluate the facts that take part in that as the nutritional health.

    2 very important input is that one that is presented in a nutrition research in which

    starting with the effect of the breakfast and its (uality and the influence that is has

    on the grades: #it has been suggested that consuming of the breakfast influences

    the school performance across of metabolic changes and neuron%hormonal in the

    nutritional state and the health at long term9. This indicates to us the importance of

    a good feed for the development of the biologic capacities of the individual that

    that the academic performance improves as according as the (uality of the

    breakfast "we can remain that the (uality of the food is connected with the

    economic capacities. The more investment of money in food, the more reachable

    (uality of the food%.

    2ccording to that we can say that a group of people, who consume a breakfast

    which is not enough for reaching the necessary energy that is re(uired on the daily

    activities, present a poor performance on the school. &o it would be very profitable

    to change the diet of their first meal, or even more giving one to all who has not the

    first meal assured, and providing one that supply the necessary energy: thus they

    would experience an improvement in their school practice, getting thus, an

    improvement that would accomplish what is expected.

    3hat have been ust said does not mean that the school performance is totally

    conditioned by the feed. The performance is not at all reduced to the feed. 3hat is

    established is the value of this factor as regard of the performance and not that it

    attempts to say that the other factors don not carry weight. Furthermore, as factors

    of individual kind it would be interesting to study the as complement to that.

    ow, respecting to lack of breakfast in the morning, the research also show us the

    implications that carry on the cognitive functions of the individual, because as a

    conse(uence the capacity to remember and memori8e is reduced.

    *t is essential to make or to intensify programs focused on the nutritional state that

    can be developed in specific circumstances and that one of the main elements of

    the learning to be the motivation and supporting of the necessary element as food.

    2s regard to what is previously mention it is possible to affirm that access is not

    only the providing of some elements that do not take into account the integrity of

    the individual, as we have ust seen, there are different facades in the same

    individual that can not be reached by the coverage of a country of the third world

    like our.

    Contrariwise, and after presenting the concept of access, * would like to show

    another aspect which has a great importance in a bigger level. This one is related

    with the development of a country: researching and technology.

    *n an undeveloped country, like Colombia, the way of accessing to cutting edge

    technology is by importing, contrary to the developed countries which produce it for

    themselves and for the other countries that can not produce it by themselves, like

    Colombia.ut what is the role of education in the technological world'

    The role is not other than providing the necessary information to the people, to

    them to be able to ac(uire the potential to handle the technology that comes from

    other parts of the world, to imitate that, to produce it by ourselves and furthermore

    to be able to innovate and becoming a leader in the world of technology as other

    countries have done in the last years.

    ut if all this is in thus, why are we left in the technology world' *t is because there

    is a big fail in the education processes that can not lead a person to a re(uired

    standard of knowledge. The government does not provide enough tools to be able

    to overcome the obstacles and all this is reflected in our daily life, starting with the

    big industries that do not have the appropriate personal to handle the technology

    came from other countries, then is when they have to appeal man power coming

    from outside, or even worse desisting from getting that technology.

    Changes in technology are innovations that affect the processes of producing, and

    the product itself. For a company to get this technology it is important to innovate

    by researching, by experience or with the contact with scientific institutions. &o, if

    we do not research, if we do not have the experience and if do not have a national

    contact, it is necessary to import it. ut, any country is able to produce all the

    technology that re(uires, but the problem is not exactly to import it, is to depend on

    it, because besides the economical implications, as we have mention before it is

    necessary to have (ualified personal to handle it, that in many of the cases lacks.

    For having the (ualified personal it is necessary to have the information and to

    provide it, implementing educative programs focused on studying the technologies

    of the new century. +rograms that focus their attention on researching with the

    internal needs and the national raw materials. ecause some times when the

    researching is fomented the, this is bad directed, because it tries to imitate

    technology without taking into account that we do not have the raw material in the

    country.

    Thus, the education has a direct implication in the development of a country

    because it marks its the position in the world of technology, it marks if the country

    creates the technology and is the leader or if the country is dependent and has to

    be in submission.

    Finally we can conclude that the education is an essential process which must be

    provided in the first instance by the family and then by the society. 2 process, that

    is a game of investment because as much as you invest on it as much as you reap

    benefits from it and which has as goal to make the individual able to serve to their

    society. *n this process a person experiences different developments as part of

    their maturation among them we have; the biological, the cognitive, the sexual and

    the social development, all of them with the own features, that make the individual

    an integral being. ut this development is conditioned by the access. 2n access

    that must be focused on the varied of circumstances that people have to face,

    starting with the economical. 2lso, we can say that as it is important to consider the

    nutritional aspect, because of the importance it has in the academic performance, it

    is also necessary to consider more circumstance that affect it.

    Furthermore the condition of being an undeveloped country has to encourage us to

    start thinking in develop our own technology and desisting from importing that as

    much as we do nowadays. For that it is important to implement new educative

    programs focused in researching. * think that when we achieve that we won6t

    depend in other countries as we do in our present, and we will be independent and

    will start to lead the world, as a capacity that we have always had in our hands but

    we have not took advantage of it.
