BARR (Building Assets Reducing Risks)What is BARR

a strengths-based educational model that provides schools with a comprehensive approach to meeting the academic, social, and emotional needs of all students through the power of data and relationships.

Why we use BARR Model great teaching begins with understanding each and every student as a learner – and as a person. The BARR Model allows staff to better understand and build on students’ strengths, proactively address the non-academic reasons why a student may be falling behind in school and identify what resources they need and steps they can take to thrive.

GLTS BARR Successes● Despite challenges, the S1 freshman failure rate

was 12% (slightly above last year, but lower than the year before BARR). Sophomores ended S1 with 5% (last year’s BARR students). Combined, they were lower than either non-BARR class.

● We created a Directed Learning Study Period for students who failed a S1 class, providing extra support during S2. Administrators set up their own DLS sessions and started weekly mentoring with students on the RR list.
