in 2001. Now 40 staff - accelerator specialists only

• Autonomous Centre within CCLRC (Oversight Boards)

• Infrastructure largely inherited - needs upgrades

• Major expansion underway - ~£4-5M pa programmeFunding mainly from CCLRC + PPARC

• Major development activity also in ISIS Department at RAL• plus other small activities (eg SNP …)

CCLRC Role in DIAMOND• Daresbury (ASTeC et al) produced Conceptual Design (1993)

• CCLRC generated detailed Design Specification (2002)

• CCLRC continues support (40 FTE in 2003/04) to DLS Ltd with both design and procurement assistance

• ASTeC supplied 10 FTE (in 2003/04) (including 3 Group Leaders)

• Support now reducing greatly (4 FTE ASTeC)

• DIAMOND commissioning support ??

New Generation Light Source• Strong UK communities exploiting existing advanced storage

ring and ‘table top’ laser facilities (SRS, ESRF, CLF)

• DIAMOND will serve the x-ray community from 2007 (XFEL ?)

• Low energy (< 100 eV) requires a separately optimised source

• Users have identified the need to supplement transverse brightness by compression longitudinally - fs pulses

• Many scientific applications need multiple sources– eg pump-probe
