POTE’SNOTES

Nobles, Ladies, and Friends, We are now into the summer and have had several events that have taken place. One I am so proud to report to you is the “Pork and Music Festival” that was held on May 2nd. It looks like we will make over $14,000.00 this year. My hat is off to Noble Rusty Brinkley for his efforts and thanks to all the volunteers that made the day a very successful one. We have had numer-ous positive comments on the event and some suggestions for improvement. The Auction Driving fund raiser is still in full swing. We really need more drivers to participate. We can have as many as 30 drivers per week and are only getting about 20. That equates to $360.00 per week we are losing because of us. If this continues we will lose about $12,000.00 this year due to non participation. You are encouraged to join us on Fridays for a short few hours to help with this fund raiser. You don’t have to cook, sell, cleanup, just drive. The May 18th Business Meeting produced 8 new novices for our Temple, 1 reaffiliation, 3 restorations, 2 demits, 2 suspensions, 22 deaths, for a net loss of 14 for the first 5 months of 2015. If this trend continues through the year and with the year end non payment of dues suspensions our numbers will drop below 1400 members. We really need to work on the membership pro-gram and take the matter seriously. We will have the PACE Program here on June 20th to help us with our efforts to start growing the numbers. I know that we can do better if we work at it. Lastly, let me discuss briefly one of John Maxwell’s rules of leadership. My favorite is that, “One must know what one doesn’t know”. When we assume we know something that we don’t really know it leads us to a counter productive situation. In the leadership position it causes us to make decisions based on inaccuracy. If you don’t know, just ask. It is always better to get things right at the start. Remember, there is no such thing as a dumb question, only dumb decisions made without the knowing the facts about the issue. Fraternally, Ben D. “Pete” Holder, PP, Recorder

From TheEDITOR’SDESKNobles, Ladies and Guests, We hope the Nobility, their families and friends will find this issue of the Accalette, both informative and interesting. We ask all nobles to patronize our advertisers. Some upcoming events listed within are the Acca Shrine Movie Night July 18th, the Acca Shrine Morning Business Meeting and Acca Family Picnic August 1st. Tickets for the picnic are $5 per person. You may get your tickets through our Shrine Center office. Your Representatives will be attending the Imperial Session in July in Houston, Texas for the Annual Session for Shrine International and Shrine Hospitals for Children. Congratulations go out to our new Nobles and their Ladies who came through the June Ceremonial. We encourage each of you to join a unit or club. You are now Nobles of Acca Shrine and a part of the Greatest Philanthropy in the World. “Shriners Hospitals for Children”. We ask you to participate and come to your Shrine Center frequently, take part in the events and be a part of its deliberations. Be an active integral part of its proceedings. You now are a vital part of Acca Shrine and there is a vital role you can play. Nobles Remember; “Shriners are Masons” Remember your Blue Lodge and other Appendant Bodies. As in any organization the key word is participation. Acca Shrine will be just what you help to make it, no better, no worse and with your help our Shriners Hospitals for Children “the World’s Greatest Philanthropy” and ACCA Shrine and you will make a difference. Lastly, Nobles, please remember the best way to get a new member is to Ask Him. Our next Ceremonial will be on the 14th November. It’s up to each of us to work on membership. The future of Acca Shrine is in your hands. Fraternally & Sincerely

Paul W. Lanier, PP., Managing Editor

ILL. Sirs, Nobles and Ladies I hope everyone is enjoying the sunshine and warm weather now. And I hope everyone is ready for another busy sea-son of parades this summer. First I would like to thank Noble Rusty Brinkley and his committee on another job well done on the Pork Festival and I would also like to thank all the Shriners and Ladies that worked the event and sold tickets it was a banner year. With the Temple making around $14,000 this year. Again Thank You for all your hard work on this Temple fundraiser. The Divan and I would like to thank all the Nobles that have been attending the Uniform Council meetings. We have had great turnouts and it shows that everyone is committed to making a difference in Acca Temple. By the time you read this Accalette we will have had a program with Imperial on membership. If you came to the PACE program on June 20th please take the information back to your clubs and units and lets all work hard on getting and retaining new and old members. Brethren we can’t do Membership alone we have to work together on this and never stop looking for new members for our fraternity. Please always try and bring a Non Shriner to our events and to your meeting to show them how much fun and fellowship we have. If they see us having fun they will

want to be a part of our fraternity. Don’t forget to keep looking for Blue Lodge Masons that’s the only place we can get Shriners. Also brethren we will be offering an amnesty program this year. What that means is that if you are 2 years in arrears you can be back up to date for the low price of $125. And if you know of a brother that has been suspended in the last couple of year they can back in the Shrine for $125 after they fill out the membership form and be read at the business meeting. Speaking of the business meeting the next business meeting will be August 1, 2015 at 10 am. Then afterwards Acca will have its family picnic with all the trimming. Something new this year at the picnic will be a dunking booth. You will have a chance to try and dunk the members of the Divan. It will be a lot of fun for everyone involved so please makes plans to attend with us. It won’t be very long until your Imperial Representatives will be in Houston, Texas for the Imperial Session. We will inform all nobles on the outcome of the call at the July Uniform Council meeting. I would like to thank Most Worshipful Jeffery Hodges for his presen-tation of Theodore Roosevelt. I truly enjoyed it and I hope if you attended you also enjoyed his talk. It’s not too often you get an opportu-nity to have a Past Grand Master and a member of Acca do a program for us. Please tell him thank you when you see him. Again thank you for allowing me to be YOUR Potentate this year and I promise each of you that I and your Divan will do our best. Remember to keep in touch with your Unit/Club and your members and to let us know if there is anything we can do to help your Unit or Club. Flag Ceremony

Pledge of Allegiance The Military Salute is used when reciting the Pledge of Allegiance and during the playing or singing of the National Anthem. “I pledge allegiance to the flag, of the United States of America, and to the republic for which it stands, one nation under God, indivisible, with liberty and justice for all” The Potentate or designated individual will cause the Nobility to come to attention and salute at the proper time. With the audience standing silently facing the platform the color bearer, followed by escort, marches to the front and faces the audience. Escorts take positions on either side of the Flag bearer. The audience may then recite the pledge of alle-giance and sing the national anthem. Flag bearer places Flag in its stand. Audience is seated. Flag detail departs.

Summer is here and I pray that it will be good to you and your loved ones. This is a time to relax enjoy vacations, cook-outs and all around family fun. Please as you refresh yourself remember that this is your Shrine and if it is to grow it is up to each of us. Ill. Sir Tim’s theme this year is ACCA setting the pace, it will take all of us working as one to make this goal a reality. Many of us will be traveling the hiways and byways and I ask God for each of you to have traveling mercies and deliver you safe and sound. I have done my best so far to keep up with the sick and bereaved and to get this information to the Nobility via e-mail. However if I don’t get the information from you I can not get it out. As I have asked since Jan. please if you know of someone sick or bereaved please contact me so that the appropriate action may be taken. May God richly bless you and yours and I hope to see you at your Temple soon. Yours in the Faith, Sam

Oriental Band Well the sunny weather is fi nally here. So let the outdoors fun begin. The band is continuing to work hard with the bingo project and the auto auction, but we still have time to have a little fun, like the parade in Charlottesville, good fun just a little wet at times but an enjoyable event. Looking forward to other parades, the ceremonial and then it’s off to SASA. Please remember the band practices the second and fourth Thursdays of each month, if you want to be part of a unit that sets the pace for fun then the Oriental Band is the unit for you. Please keep Mary Stanley, Steve Meagher, Ed Wood and Rusty Tatum in your prayers as they all are on their way to full wellness. It’s with a heavy heart that I report the passing of band member Wor. Charles Roth Gunther Jr. Charlie fought long and hard with his illness. Charlie was a Past Worshipful Master of Petersburg Lodge #15, member of Petersburg Union Royal Arch Chapter 7, Appomattox Commandery #6 Knights Templar, Alpha #1 OES and Past President of the Hopewell Shrine Club. Next to his fam-ily his greatest love was his country which he served with honor for over 24 years in the U.S. Army and his Masonic affi liation. He surely will be missed by many, please keep his family in your thoughts and prayers. Fraternally, Buddy Small, Band President

First Lady’s Thoughts Ladies I hope you all are enjoying the beautiful flow-ers and this beautiful weather we are having. I don’t know about you all but I’m glad it’s finally here. Isn’t amazing how the good Lord brings everything back to life in the spring and how he provides for each of us in his own way. I would like to thank all for attending the spring ceremonial and for all your hard work in your Nobles club or unit. The food and hospitality was awesome. And of course I can’t thank the decorating committee, hotel hospitality staff and divan ladies enough for your hard work for this weekend. Without these dedicated committees this weekend would not have been a suc-cess. This year is flying by and will be gone before we know it. Tim and I cannot begin to thank everyone enough for all you have done for us and for the support you have given us this year. It has been an amazing year to say the least. Ladies we attended a program for membership called the PACE program. If you attended this program on June 20th please assist your noble and his Unit or Club to help ACCA Shrine grow. Even though we aren’t Shriners it’s like our home and family too. We need to help the Temple and our Nobles club or unit get stronger thru membership. Ladies please mark your calendar for the family picnic on August 1st at 12:30 pm. It will be a real fun time for everyone. So get ready to bring your grandchildren and also something new the Potentate is doing this year is he will have a dunking booth for us to try and dunk the ACCA Divan. I can assure you I will be first in line to dunk our Potentate. I know the Potentate and the Divan have a lot of ideas on their minds to bring fun and fellowship to Acca Shrine this year and we ladies are looking forward to helping our men achieve this goal. The Divan Ladies will again do the Red, White and Brew fundraiser this year on September 12, 2015. Please mark your calendars for this GREAT fundraiser. In closing if there is any-thing I or the Divan ladies can do to assist you please feel free to call contact of us.

Hopewell Shrine Club

We are about half way through another year with the Hopewell Shrine Club. The Hopewell Shrine Club was honored to have members of the Divan visit our May meeting, Those visiting were Assistant Chief Rabban Thornton Holt, Captain of the Guard James Sadler and Lady Joyce Spiller, and Treasurer Floyd Maxey and Lady Beverly. We had a good meal at the Hopewell Moose Lodge then continued on with our meeting. We appreci-ated them taking their time to come out and visit. In April the Hopewell Shrine Club lost one of their Lifetime Members, Noble Charles Gunther. Noble Gunther fought a hard battle and will be missed. Our prayers are with Lady Mei, daugh-ters Rosa and Melissa and the rest of the family. The Hopewell Shrine Club continues to assist the Ashland Moose Lodge selling pull-tabs during bingo. This has been a great fund raiser for the Club and ACCA Shrine Center and has given us an opportunity to meet some fun people. I want to give a big thank you to those members and their spouses who have provided support. The Hopewell Shrine Club invites new members to join us on the 3d Wednesday of the month at the Hopewell Moose Lodge. If you need additional information, contact me.. Fraternally, Richard Stanley

April was a busy month as we recover from and celebrate the success of our 28th Annual Virginia Catfi sh Festival held March 28, 2015 at the spacious STEPS Centre in Farmville, Virginia. While funds are still coming in and bills are being paid, our club estimates approximately $11,000.00 will be available to disburse between the transportation fund and Shriners Hospital accord-ing to Noble Robert Llewellyn, our event leader. It feels great to know that everyone’s hard work will make a difference in a child’s life. ACCA Ill. Sir Tim Southern and Oriental Guide Tommy Jones attended our April meeting and discussed the importance of growing the membership, encouraging membership to pay dues and remain in good standing, and support of upcoming events at ACCA. The challenge was given for our club to bring in 4 new shriners this year. We are up for the challenge. Ill. Sir Tim Southern also installed our 2015 club offi cers: President, Brad Arnold; Vice President, Benjamin Clark; Sec-retary, Harris “Sonny” Conner, Jr.; Treasurer, Charles Puckett; Mini Patrol Car Commander, Irving “Pepper” Arnold, Jr.

Mini Patrol

The Mini Patrol returned to the fi elds of Montpelier this year for another great year parking cars at the Montpelier Wine Fes-tival. In addition to one of the nicest weekends weather-wise, the unit enjoyed charitable donation receipts of over $4,000. We have decided to appropriate three-quarters of that to Greenville Hospital, and the balance to the Van Fund. Like many of our mini cars, the unit operated like a well-oiled machine as every-thing fell into place. We always enjoy Montpelier and look for-ward to returning year after year. The Orange Chamber of Com-merce always speaks highly of our effi cient efforts and has asked us back again next year. Moving into summer, the Mini Patrol is really going to rev its engines. Another fun night is planned this year at the Swift Creek Mill Theater. Our favorite summer parades are coming up and many of us have been working over our cars. We’ve also begun preparing for SASA Competition this year, which will be the second year in a row the unit will return to motorized compe-tition. Putting the remainder of 2015 into focus, the Mini Patrol will work on some new fundraisers and continue to bolster the unit’s fi nancial foothold. Some of our nobles have retired from driv-ing, which means that the unit has several available cars for sale. Combine this with the declining membership of Acca Temple and lack of candidates, and we have a problem where our mini

cars could get out of sight and fall into disrepair. To ensure that these priceless vehicles remain intact with the unit, we have ap-propriated funds to begin the “Mini Car Forever Fund”. This fund will be used to buy-back and rehabilitate cars that have gone inactive. It’s all a major effort I am putting forth in the unit to make sure that we future proof ourselves. Once we start getting some new drivers in the future, the unit will be stronger thanks to our preparation here, and now.

The Acca Arab Patrol is a social organization, committed to service above self and the pursuit of having fun while doing so. We are a marching unit and always enjoy a good parade. We are a close knit unit participating in multiple activities and fund raisers for the hospitals. Our unit is strong, active, involved, and proud of our past. We are the Patrol. Once upon a time a litter of beautiful puppies was born near the Acca Shrine Center and their mother was unfortunately hit by a car on Hermitage Road, orphaning the pups. The Recorder was moved to the point of bringing them in to Acca and asked a local boy to care for them. So each day the young lad came to Acca to nurse and bottle feed the young puppies. It was summer so he was off from school and glad to help. Since he lived nearby, he had grown

up around the Shriners and had participated in multiple events like the Easter egg hunt and Christmas with Santa. Well, next day he showed up and the puppies were howling just as the recorder came by and said “They sound mighty fi ne, I bet they are going to be Chanter puppies”. The boy was puzzled but did his job. The fol-lowing day the puppies somehow had little red plastic noses placed on each one of them overnight, and the bewildered boy asked the recorder why and was told, “the puppies were surely going to be Klownz someday”. On the third day, when the boy arrived to nurse the puppies, low and behold, they each had little booties with curled up toes placed on all of them, and when the lad asked why, the recorder said, “they must be Oriental Band puppy dogs”. The young lad was not quite sure just what was going on but did his job diligently and then on the next morning he was shocked to see his beautiful little pups gnawing on fresh road kill. How disgusting! Then the recorder happened to come by and assured the boy that it was OK because these were surely going to be Hillbilly puppies now and there was nothing to worry about. Whew. So a few days went by and the progression of puppy shrine unit affi liation con-tinued as the boy cared for the puppies daily, until just about every unit had done their little tricks to sway the pups their way. And then the Potentate paid a special visit to the boy with the puppies, to thank him for his service and once and for all, establish which unit these pups were going to belong to? The Potentate said, “Looks like Provost Guard puppy dogs to me,” and the boy replied, “No, Illustrious Sir, they are all now Arab Patrol puppies and are going to march in all the Acca pa-rades. The Potentate then said, “how can that be son?” “Well Sir, this morning they all fi nally opened their eyes and for the fi rst time, they saw the light”. Amen

Dear Nobles, Ladies, and Friends, The Ceremonial Cast has had a great spring! This is the time of year we love to get out of the house and enjoy the beautiful weather. We had a great time going to Charlottesville, for the Dog Wood Festival, even with the chilly temperature and the rain we enjoyed getting up there and seeing happy smiling faces of the parade participants as well as being able to enjoy the fellow-ship of other Shriners. And thank you to the Piedmont Shrine club for feeding us after the parade! Also, on May 09 we had the Second Annual Cast Yard Sale! What a great event that was! We had a very successful day from

Ceremonial Cast

the sales while also making a little more room in our sheds, garages, and attics! Everyone worked really hard that day to make it a success. So, thank you to all the Cast members who came out to help. Also, a very VERY big thank you to the Shrine Ladies who helped us set up and work the yard sale, especially Lady Bev Maxey, who worked tirelessly the whole day. Lastly, I just want to say goodbye to long time Shriner and Cast member Bob Blake! His contributions to the Cast and Temple are invaluable! Have fun back in Maine, we are really going to miss you here! Please continue to donate aluminum (not steel) cans and news-papers in the recycle bin. I hope this issue of the Accalette finds you well! Enjoy your summer! And Get new Shriners!!! Danny Muldoon

Hillbilly Unit

Hey Ya’ll!! Your Hillbilly unit is staying active on the other side of the mountain. We have many fundraisers and parades on the books for the year. We are planning on attending the Carytown Watermelon Festival again this year and teaming up with our fellow Nobles from Richmond to do some slicing and dicing. We will also be hosting our 3rd Annual Pancake Breakfast and Silent Auction again this August at Tinkling Springs Presbyterian Church in Fishersville, VA. Our second year selling drinks at our area “Shakin’ at the Station” event in Staunton, VA has started and we are going full bore. We are hoping to surpass our total from last year!! We had 8 hillbillies present at the Dogwood Festival parade in Charlottesville and had a wet but fun time. We will also be having some of us ride up for the Colonial Beach parade coming up. Also, please don’t forget our Illustrious Potentate’s theme for the spring ceremonials dance will be a Hillbilly Ball. He said, “I better not see a suit and tie in the place.” We will have more fundraisers and parades later on in the year and can’t wait to join in fun and fellowship with the other Nobles of ACCA over the rest of the year. Hope ya’ll have a safe and wonderful spring and have good fortune in your fundraising endeavors. Remember Nobles, Honor the Cob!!

ACCABA COURT NO. 105Ladies Oriental Shrine of North America (LOS)

Greetings from Florida! By the time you are reading this article, eleven LOS members, and seven Nobles will be back in Virginia. We have been in Or-lando attending the Grand Council of the Ladies Oriental Shrine of North America. It has been so much fun renewing friendships we’ve made over the years. The highlight of the week was watch-ing Lady Noel Walsh-Gardner, High Priestess of ACCABA Court nominate our Lady Kristine Palmer as Grand First Ceremonial Lady. My special times were being with Lady Kris at the recep-tion on Sunday night and on the fl oor of the court during the formal opening of Grand Council. Lady Noel was on the fl oor with Lady Kris when she was installed as Grand First Ceremo-nial Lady. I was with Lady Kris last year, when she was installed as Grand Second Ceremonial Lady, and it’s a real honor to be beside a Grand Offi cer as she is installed into her new position. As I have said before, ACCABA Court will be hosting Grand Council in 2019, so everyone was taking notes when we weren’t spending time together just having fun. We have fun, but there is work involved also like attending business sessions. Fun night was a country hoe down, check out some of our la-dies and their Nobles. Formal night was exciting too.

Wednesday afternoon brought the unit drills. Our Lady Slip-pers came out on the dance fl oor to clapping and cheers not just from the ACCABA ladies but, from all the ladies attending the drills. Our new Klown unit, The Klown Arounds, made their Grand Council debut in Orlando, as did the Lady Slippers the last time Grand Council was held in Orlando.

While the ladies were attending business sessions, fi ve of our Nobles went to Tampa to tour the Tampa Shrine Hospital and Shrine Imperial Headquarters. They all enjoyed their tour of the hospital and the Shrine Headquarters and were glad they made the trip. Now we’re planning for the offi cial visitation of the Grand High Priestess, Lady Joy Moore on July 15 and 16. We look for-ward to her visit and to showing her “Virginia Hospitality.” We will be hosting a dinner for Lady Joy in the ballroom of Acca Temple on Wednesday evening, a luncheon on Thursday at Se-dona Taphouse hosted by the Past High Priestesses of ACCABA Court and a special court meeting on Thursday evening. Membership Committee

Greeting Nobles! Summer is here with many picnics, parades and good times ahead. To quickly recap our membership status, Acca currently has just over 1,440 members, slightly down (1.5%) from our starting numbers in January. Our Temple leadership has shared several fantastic ideas and plans this year and many of the Clubs, Units and committees are planning prospective member-ship events. Countless numbers of petitions have been passed out and I know there are great things yet to come. Writing this article before the Spring Ceremonial, I am con-fi dent we had a great showing of support from the Nobility and increased our membership numbers. Welcome new Nobles to the Acca Shrine family! We strongly encourage you to join a Unit or Club and challenge you to stay active. There is so much to do not only in our Temple, but for the thousands of children in our 22 Hospitals as well. Just as in Freemasonry, you will get out of the Shrine what you put into it. Please mark your calendars for the evening of July 18th and support the Membership Committee as we host a family movie night for Acca Shriners. It will be a fun, casual and FREE event for everyone, so be sure to bring a guest family! Refer to the full-page ad in this issue of the Accalette for all the details. Lastly Nobles, please know that the Membership Committee is here for you. We are a resource and we want to see every Unit and Club succeed. Contact us any time, ask questions, share your ideas, give us feedback and let us help you. Please also under-stand that membership is every Noble’s responsibility! Attend your Blue Lodge and promote being a Shriner and our philan-thropy. If invited, the Committee would love to give a program at your Lodge. Keep up the good work Nobles and always remem-ber to “THINK MEMBERSHIP!” Sincerely and Fraternally, Ross C. Morland, Membership Chairman

Motor Patrol Three Harley’s and one Go-Cart were on static dis-play at the Pork and Music Festival. They drew a lot of attention. The Kids, es-pecially the boys enjoyed sitting on the Harley’s. The girls were attracted to the Go-Cart. The big boy “Kids” checked out the bikes and asked a lot of questions. They were impressed that they were “Shrine Harley’s” and all were identical. The Motor Patrol Catering Service is in full swing. In April we provided the meal at the Christian Church on Creighton Rd; May 6th found us at the Kiwanis Club on Hermitage Ave; May 8th, we did the Legion of Honor Ladies Night. We will return to the Legion on June 3rd for their Old Timers Night. From the sched-ule, you can see that we stay pretty busy. If you are interested in scheduling a date, contact either Illustrious Sir Bill Painter or noble Charles Hanbury. There is good and not so good news concerning our sick and distressed. The good is that Illustrious Bill Painter is improving. They seem to have solved one of his problems, now they can concentrate on his original diagnosis. Tom White was recently admitted to the hospital. After some procedures, he is doing a lot

better. The not so good; Illustrious Sir Marion Dawson, who had back surgery is still experience severe pain. Noble Don Hog-wood is having diffi culty with the installation of a pacemaker. Prayers and Cards would be welcomed. At this time, the Motor Patrol will participate in both the Colo-nial Beach and Irvington parades. Hope to see everyone there. Keep the sunny-side up. Synergy is a term used quite often in the business world, usually when discussing the benefi ts of teamwork, to describe a phenom-enon which can’t really be explained but exists none the less. It has been studied time and time again with the results always the same. It goes this way, the measured output of two fully trained and expe-rienced people performing the same task over the course of a stated amount of time will always exceed the output of a single person do-ing the same task by more than twice as much. For example, let’s say Joe and Jim’s production results while performing a given task, such as assembling toy robots, are the same at the end of an hour when tested individually. Each person assembled twenty while working alone under the exact the same conditions. But, if we put Joe and Jim together in the in the same room performing the exact same opera-tion during the same period of time, the total number of assembled robots will always exceed forty (twenty plus twenty). In fact, the total will probably be somewhere around forty-fi ve.

When I think about the Sauerkrauts and the success we’ve had in working for our hospitals, it occurred to me that we are never working by our selves. We are always working in conjunc-tion with another group or organization. If we are playing at a restaurant, our scheduled appearance is used in advertising to draw more patrons into the restaurant for that particular event. Typically we are asked to play, but we have learned that some-times we have to reach out and make contact with groups and organizations. If we see a good fi t with an organization where we both feel that by working together we can each benefi t, we jump on it. Often, we have to have a planned activity already in mind when we approach the other party and be prepared to sell the idea. Last year, we split the proceeds of Powhatan County’s First Annual Oktoberfest which was planned and pulled off in conjunction with the Powhatan Moose. It was a tremendous un-dertaking which took several months of hard work and planning to put together, but by working jointly as a team, it turned out to be a tremendous success. One conversation with the Social Com-mittee of the Moose resulted in each organization splitting two thousand dollars for our respective charities. All of our units and clubs have worked together in performing temple sponsored fund raising events, but have we considered working together to increase our individual year end donations to the hospitals? Trust me, if two clubs team up and pull off an event, neither group is overwhelmed or overworked and the end result in terms of dollars, I guarantee, will be greater than if each group goes off on their own. It has worked for the Krauts. Give it some thought. Remember, the Krauts are always ready and willing to help. Bill Hudson, Reporter

On April 4, 2015, under the combine sponsorship by the Acca Divan and their Ladies, the Acca Klownz and the Greeters Unit, the annual Magic Show and Easter Egg Hunt was held. Many children attended. This year we had a different Magic Program, which was enjoyed by both children and adults. The Acca Klownz entertained the children before the show and before the start of the Easter Egg Hunt. Below is a picture showing a portion of those in attendance to the Magic Show, which was held in the Acca Ballroom.

Greeters Unit

At the conclusion of the Magic Show, the children were invited to the activity center for refreshments and a snack provided by the Acca Divan Ladies. At the appointed time, the children were separated into groups by their age to hunt Easter Eggs put out by the Divan, Acca Klownz and Greeters. One special group that participated were some of our Shrine Children that are in the Shriners Hospital treatment system. A few of these who attended are in the picture below.

As we all know, someone has to look afler the Easter Bunny, and that duty fell to Greeter, & Past Potentate Phil Godwin and Past Greeter President Jake Hattan as shown in the picture below.

Our next report will be in the August issue and will feature our visit to the Sasa Greeters Spring Meeting in Charlotte, NC. In the meantime, Please take time to attend your Blue Lodge, Scottish-Rite, York Rite and other Masonic orders which you are a member. Also make sure your Dues Card for each organization is current. Again, our thanks to Greetette Betti Rock who supplied these and other previous pictures for the Accalette. Jacob H. Hattan, Jr. Reporter

Pork & Music Festival 2015

On Saturday, May 2nd, 2015, the Shriner’s Pork & Music Fes-tival was held on the grounds of Acca Shrine Center. It was a great way to showcase our Shrine Center and allow others to see what a wonderful facility we have here in the north side of Richmond. The weather was perfect and the day began with music provided by the Kings of Swing. BBQ and Ribs, with all the usual fi xings, were provided by Nixion’s Catering. Thanks to the Southside Shrine Club for providing their great funnel cakes and to Steve Fuller for selling his famous Pork Rinds. Once again this year’s event offered VIP tents that were purchased by several returning corporate sponsors. A special thank you goes to Mark Motley and W.T. Parrish for helping secure these sponsors. These tents not only included their own private area to entertain employees and guests, but also to be treated with their own servers. Special thanks go out to those volunteers who helped as tent servers. We received high marks for your efforts and that will help promote them to return for next year. Special thanks go to Motley Asset Disposition Group, Page Auto Group, ABILENE Motor Express, SunTrust Bank and Brian Adams Attorney at Law for their sup-port as corporate sponsors. We also need to recognize our mem-bers who participated as sponsors. Allen Tire, Bruce Smith with Local Electric, and Brian Adams, Attorney at Law with Spotts Fain, PC, and all our members who bought, sold, and donated their tickets to a Military Family. We would like to thank the Million Dollar Band members who worked the beer truck and Manchester SC for providing corn hole boards. Thanks also go

out to the Director’s Staff members and their Ladies who worked on Friday & Saturday setting up tents, tables, chairs, manning the gates. Also thanks to the Amelia Demolay, David Eells and his committee for clean up long after the event was over. We want to thank all the committee chairs and their members for working over the past many months behind the scene. All in all it was a big day for Acca, with our grounds fi lled with laughter, music, good food and libations. It was also a fi nancial success, raising over $14,000 for Acca’s general fund. Plans will soon be under way for next year to be even bigger. If you or your unit would like to be more involved next year please let us know. So mark your calendar now for Saturday, May 7, 2016. We expect to grow this event bigger and better each year until we have to limit the number of tickets we can sell. A sincere thanks to everyone who made this event such a success! The Director’s Staff Corner

Just as April showers bring May fl owers the Director’s Staff meeting brought a full agenda which was so aptly presented and controlled by our Director Noble Tom Williams. The meet-ing opened with a memorial followed by a memorial prayer by Noble Frank Bishop in honor of the late Noble William “Buddy” Melton who passed away on April 1, 2015. This was followed by the business agenda which included the sale of the infamous staff trailer to the Million Dollar Band. The trailer is gone but not it’s memories which are many. Other items included preparations for the upcoming race on April 24 and the ceremonial in June. All were aptly dealt without too much conversation from the Past Di-rectors. Noble Bobby Gordon, PD was commended on his work with the bingo which has helped the Director’s Staff. Also, it was noted that Noble John Andrews has been named President of the KCCH Honor Court of the Scottish Rite. Noble Charlie Allen, PD asked for the fl oor during which of-fered a commentary on the importance of honoring our fallen brothers when they pass away. He mentioned that there is no greater way to honor former members of the staff than by attend-ing their celebrations of life and funerals. The comments were well received by the members. The meeting was concluded by Noble Wayne “The Rock” Robison who offered a story about a Brother and cats and keys. It would appear the story had a happy ending with a round of laughter from the members. On this note the meeting was adjourned. The second Saturday in April was a typical spring day in Rich-mond and what better to do than have a picnic and a grand picnic it was. The annual Staff picnic was held at the Activities Center at ACCA and it was well attended. Under the careful eye of Noble Director Tom and Lady Patti Williams everything was in order. Great fellowship ensued and then food which included hamburg-ers, hot dogs and chicken with your favorite side dishes. Thanks to Nobles Gary Westerhouse and Joe Parker and others, espe-cially the Staff ladies, who helped with the food preparation and refreshments. Entertainment was provided by none other than Noble W.T. Parrish of Goochland fame. Thanks to everyone who worked hard and contributed to this effort. The Toyota Care 250 was run on April 24, 2015 and as usual the Director’s Staff Ushers were there in all their glory. Led by Noble Director Tom Williams and supervised by Ill. Paul Lanier, PP, PD on the golf cart, how could anything go wrong? After a wonderful breakfast prepared by members of Washington Henry

Mechanicsville Lodge the ushers were on their posts. Meanwhile back at the Temple Noble Jim Deiterick PD and Ladies Carol and Sherri accompanied by Nobles Joe Parker, Ill. Ray Goodman, PP, PD and James Beamguard prepared a wonderful lunch for the workers. Fried chicken with all the trimmings and chocolate chip cookies for desert what more could you ask. To all those Nobles, ladies and volunteers who helped with this fund raising effort a great big thank you. The sunshine list refl ects a number of folks who deserve our thoughts and prayers. They include Nobles Bill Klauminzer, Wayne Geisel, Sam Abrash, who had back surgery on May 11, Ernest Lee McGregor and Lady Barbara Holder whose son is ill. The May Staff meeting was an eventful affair with Noble Di-rector Tom Williams maintaining order and processing the agen-da items in a good fashion. He thanked everyone for their support for several recent functions including the Pork Festival. Several items including the June Ceremonial were discussed. Noble Charles Allen, PD thanked all those who participated in the fu-nereal of the late Lady Marge McGregor. The group sang Happy Birthday to Andrew Chandler. It was announced the infamous Staff trailer had been sold which brought a round of conversation from the group. Also, a discussion took place regarding the use of a fi re truck in parades provided by Shanon Berry. After some conversation regarding this matter the meeting was adjourned on motion. It is with great sense of sorrow that I advise you of the passing of Lady Marge McGregor, wife of Noble Ernest Lee McGregor, PD. She passed away on May 2, 2015 after a short illness. A funeral service was held on May 6, 2015 with interment at River-side Cemetery. Director’s Staff members served as pall bearers. Lady Marge was a stalwart among the ladies of the staff and will be greatly missed. Her love for the work of the staff and its ef-forts for the Shriner’s Hospitals were only exceeded by her love for Noble Ernest Lee and her family. She will be missed by one and all. There is little question that “She will dwell in the house of the Lord forever.” To the Director’s Staff members and their ladies deepest appre-ciation is extended for the outstanding performance at the recep-tion for the family and guests after the funeral for the late Lady

Directors Staff Continued Valley Shrine Club On May 27, the Valley Shrine Club met at Pano’s Restaurant. President Peyton Yancey opened the meeting. The pledge of al-legiance and invocation followed the opening remarks. Noble Bill Crouse read the Secretary’s minutes of the April meeting. Noble Jim Nelson gave the Treasurer’s report. Noble Dee Layman introduced and the Club welcomed Noble Chandler Thomas as a new member. Noble Chip Rothery introduced the evening’s speaker, Com-monwealth’s Attorney Marsha Garst. Her oldest daughter, Josey, of whom she is extremely proud, accompanied Mrs. Garst. Mrs. Garst is serving her fourth term and running for a fi fth in the fall election. She is a Valley native. She is a graduate of the University of Virginia (UVA) and received her Law Degree from George Ma-son Law University. Mrs. Garst thanked the Club for their work with children and mentioned how she is very familiar with the stress of having a sick child as she has a relative being treated at UVA hospital. She stated that violent crime is the biggest challenge facing law enforcement in the area. Rockingham County has experienced a forty-three percent increase in violent crimes in the past 5 years. She attributes this increase to the infl uence of drug traffi cking and gang activity. Mrs. Garst indicated that the Rockingham County jail population has a ninety-eight percent return rate for inmates, while the Middle River Correctional Facility has an eighty-eight percent rate. They are trying to reduce these rates via work release programs and counseling offered before release. Violent offenders are in-eligible for work release. Mrs. Garst voiced her opposition to the legalization of mari-juana but stated that she is sworn to uphold the Laws of the State, even when in disagreement with the law. Noble Rothery reported that the Rocking R food booth was a success and another would be held September 25 and 26. He thanked Noble Mike Fitzwater, and all Nobles who were avail-able to assist with the event. Bob Evans Restaurant will be donating a percentage of their pro-ceeds from meals on October 1, 2, and 3. The Noble Leroy Fega Memorial golf tournament is August 8 at Lakewood Golf Club. Teams and sponsors are needed and more information and signup sheets are available online at www.lakewoodgolf.net. Profi ts from this event will also go to the Shri-ners Hospitals for Children. Other events upcoming are the 30th Annual Blue Grass Festival on September 10, 11, and 12 at the Grand Caverns in Grottoes. Tickets and more information are available at www.bluegrass-ingrottoes.com. Tickets are also available at the Grand Caverns offi ce and all branches of F & M bank locations. In June, the Club will work with Whit’s Market in Timberville to sell Pork Tenderloin Sandwiches to raise funds. At the November meeting, a Silent Auction will raise funds for the Shriners Hospitals for Children. P Buckley Moss Raffl e tickets are being sold to raise funds also. The winner receives a P Buckley Moss print of the Bushong House on the New Market Battlefi eld. Tickets are $5.00 and the drawing will be Decem-ber 19 at the Valley Shrine Club’s Christmas celebration. Noble Mike Fitzwater will be substituting for Santa Claus, as Mr. Claus is very busy this time of year. Bill Crouse, Secretary

Marge McGregor. Noble Ernest Lee McGregor said words could not be found to express his gratitude for all the support that was given during his time of sorrow. Nobles and Ladies that’s what the brotherhood is all about. DIRECTOR’S STAFF WHISPERS: Has anyone noted that the Mayor of Goochland has become quite outspoken on issues facing the Staff. Is he seeking a higher offi ce? Only the Shadow knows. Is the Mayor of Rockville on permanent leave? Did you notice “The Rock” making the rounds in a meet and greet at the meeting. You have been missed. The Past Director’s were rather subdued at the picnic. Could age be taking it’s told. Is it time for the young guns? To be continued. The fried chicken served to the workers at the track was quite spicy hot. Was it an effort to make a point? Glad there was plenty of water. What’s with the Past Director who had to leave the track early for a social engage-ment? Isn’t it great to see Ill. Sir John Hanna PP, at so many staff functions? He is a remarkable Noble and Brother. Apologies are extended to Noble Les Nevins whose name I butchered in an ear-lier article. Senior moment. Is a training session in order for the correct ties to wear with the Staff dress uniform? Let’s try again at the Ceremonial. Good to see the Sgt. Major at the May meet-ing. Who was that Past Director who got thrown under the bus at the meeting? The infamous trailer is gone forever more. It might be replaced with a fi re truck. Will the Staff be the same? Rocky wants to bring back the fl ag march. Frank Bishop Staff Columnist

Petersburg Shrine Club Our April meeting was held at the Colonial Restaurant in Co-lonial Heights. One of our Club members lives at the Masonic Home. His name is Jimmy Lucas and he is the District Masonic Home Am-bassador for the 29th District. J irmny spoke on what it is like to live at the Masonic Home. He has also given his speech to the Blandford Lodge #3 as well as other Lodges. Thank you, Jim-my. I apologize for not having any photos in this article but I was on vacation in Florida, Alabama and Georgia and was not at the meeting. The Petersburg Shrine Club will meet at Shoney’s on Route 36 in May. We will keep you informed on this. We meet on the 4th Wednesday of each month except July and August when we are dark. Bill Brockwell

Dear Nobles, Everyone enjoyed Lake Coward’s Maryland oysters at the club’s annual event this year. A big thank you to the ACCA Divan who did a super job in helping to make it a success. Noble Joe Dunaway was presented a plaque thanking him for his dedication and service to the club. His hot dogs are always an added treat to satisfy this hungry group. Noble Fred Paul and Lady Carol fried up the breaded oysters to perfection. My son, Comer, helped man the bar. The club’s next meeting is to be announced. Hopefully, the warm weather will soon return. ACCA Antique, Sports and Classic Car Club

Thanks to President Michael and other members’ ideas for making the Car Club more visible, we have another Acca Car Club application in hand. The new member to be voted on at the June Car Club picnic at Noble Dewey Draucker’s Swift Creek Cabin is Les Gillenwater. We are making progress in building the Car Club’s membership. The Car Club Members attended the ACCA Shriners Red White and Brew Central Virginia Pork and Music Festival on May 2, 2015. Our members brought nine cars, some sports cars, some vintage antiques for the attendees of the Pork and Music Festival to view. Special thanks go to Tom Daughtrey for bringing three of his American made antiques and Dewey Draucker displaying two of his fi ne Ferraris. We thank the other four members for bringing their cars, also. There was great interest in the cars and many questions were answered and a lot of discussions on the age, quality of preservation, where they came from, how well do they perform and “Is it for sale??” took place. We thought Po-tentate Tim Southern’s decision to let us display these cars was a nice addition to a very successful Red White and Brew Pork and Music Festival and we appreciated the opportunity. If you were not able to attend the event, we hope you enjoy the pictures we have included in this article of the cars that were displayed. This presentation of member’s cars was the main reason Les Gillen-water decided to join our club.

We still ask for your prayers for Noble Tom Daughtrey’s Lady Carol and Tom during this diffi cult time. She is taking chemo for lung cancer and is experiencing some problems with fl uid buildup around her heart. Russell Graves continues to have knee troubles and eyesight problems. He has limited mobility and is unable to attend most shrine functions. President Michael, all the offi cers and members and our La-dies, invite all Shriners to come visit us at one of our meetings, call us with any questions and hopefully develop an interest in our activities with antique and sport cars. The great outpouring of interest at the Red White and Brew Pork and Music Festi-val, in our cars shows that The Car Club is a valuable asset to ACCA Shrine. We have already been asked to bring the cars to another event in September and I am sure we will be there with the “Shine” on! Ed Johnston Jr, Reporter

April 17-18, we had our annual fundraiser supporting the Glen Allen Dance Center 2015 Recital at the Glen Allen Cultural Arts Center. We had a great response. Wednesday through Saturday, we sold tickets to friends and family of the dancers. Collas Lowry organized our participation and much of the behind-the-scenes work. Thanks, Collas for your hard work. Other volunteers who helped with the event included “Red” Williams, David Eells, Al Ott and myself. Not pictured were Jimi Duke and James Sadler. Many others sold program ads and contributed as patrons. We provided bouquets of flowers to be presented to the teachers after Saturday night’s performance. A big thanks to all who supported this endeavor. I’d also like to thank Cecila Morano for allowing us to participate again this year. The Recital is always a great fundraiser for us! Which one of our members has become known to many of us as “O Johnny”? I am looking forward to our June 10 meeting which will be “covered dish”. That always means good fried chicken and many tasty dishes by our ladies! Al Rock, President

Shriners HospitalsRichmond Clinic

After almost three years in planning, the Richmond Clinic for follow-up visits will begin seeing patients in the next month or two. This is a joint venture by Philadelphia Shriners Hospital and Greenville Shriners Hospital. Chil-dren having surgery at either of these hospitals will now be able to receive appropriate follow-up postoperative care in Richmond rather than having to be transported to ei-ther Philadelphia or Greenville. The appointments will be made directly by the hospitals to the offi ce of Susan At-kins, MD, a Richmond pediatric orthopedic surgeon. Dr. Atkins trained at Greenville Hospital, so is very familiar with the Shriners Hospital System. Follow-up visits will be available to patients sponsored by ACCA, Khedive, Kena and Kazim Temples as well as a Temple from North Carolina and southern Maryland. This will, hopefully, save thousands of dollars in transportation costs for all Temples as well as being more convenient for our children and their families. This will not serve as a Screening Clinic. Referrals to the hospitals will continue to be made by calling 866-459-0013. Dr. Redman will also screen patients in his offi ce at any time. Please call 804-288-2444 and children will be seen at the parent’s convenience and be referred to the appropriate hospital. Richard Redman, MD Board of Governors-Greenville

Hot Sands Steel Drum Band

Greetings from the Hot Sands Steel Drum Band, The band enjoyed our participation in the Charlottesville Dog-wood Festival parade on April 25th. We thank the members of the Piedmont Shrine Club for their gracious hospitality. Although rain did effect our efforts in taking down the fl oat, it couldn’t dampen our spirits as the band enjoyed a great time sharing its brand of music. The Ceremonial Open House on June 4th gave us a great op-portunity to show our talents. We invite anyone who wants to express himself in pan banging music to join our ranks. We look forward to showcasing the band again in the near future. Perhaps at your poolside party, Just give us a call: Jeff Hodges 434-531-1356. Until we meet again, keep a smile on your face and a song in your heart. Respectfully submitted, Jeffery Hodges, President

The golf trip to Pinehurst met and exceeded all expectations. The courses were very nice; the weather could not have been better and the fun and fellowship with the Kazim golfers had last-ing memories. This is the second year of joining Kazim for this Spring outing and I think it will continue to be an annual event. In fact, the Kazim coordinator and I have already talked about having it again next year, possibly in Myrtle Beach. After returning from Pinehurst, we continued golf with our scheduled monthly outing. We played the Brickshire Course on May 28th. It is a very fi ne course. The temperature got a little warm at the very end of the round—but the 19th hole is designed to resolve that issue. The Golf Club has been invited to some Tournaments. On August 6th, the Grand Master’s Tournament will be held at the Lexington Country Club; August 8th, the Valley Shrine Club will host their tournament at the Lakeview Golf Club in Harrisonburg and on October 2nd, the Scottish Rite will have their annual tour-nament at the Hunting Hawk course in Richmond. If you are in-terested, contact Jack Cooke, Illustrious Paul Lanier or myself. The Offi cers are looking at a late summer or fall trip. It will probably be to a shorter destination and maybe just an overnight excursion. The Shrine has so much activity in September and

October that it is diffi cult to fi nd a schedule date. Will keep you informed. Our schedule for the remaining year; June 25—Sycamore Creek; July 23—Mill Quarter; August 27—Queenfi eld; Septem-ber 24—Brandermill; October 22—Royal New Kent and we fi n-ish the year on November 19 at Meadowbrooks. This is an early notice but I wanted to remind you so that you could make plans to attend. Every year, generally the third Wednesday in January, we have a Ladies Night at Meadowbrook Country Club. It starts with a cocktail hour, then a great meal and ends with a short program were we recap the year. Some-times this gets quite comical. That night we crown the “Golfer of the Year”; to his surprise and dismay. It is a delightful and fun evening and reasonably priced. After the hustle and bustle of the holiday season, the Ladies look forward to this event each year where they can relax and enjoy a fi ne evening. If you are a golfer, come join us.

The bad news at the start of our March meeting was that John-nie Carr, our President, was hospitalized with a heart problem. The good news is that after several heart tests, no serious heart problems were found. He is as good as new. Our 1st V. P. Billy Jellie, conducted the meeting in a most profi cient manner. I hear he has had some experience. Our guests for the evening were some of the ladies and their husbands from Accaba Court 105. High Priestess Noel Walsh Gardner, presented Tim Ford and Terry Nall a 100 million dollar certifi cate for preparing a meal for the visit of their leaders. Speaking of 100 million dollar cer-tifi cates, the March drawing was won by yours truly. The April winner was Jerry Pugh. The club obtained a 100 million dollar certifi cate to honor our “chicken picking women”. Our guests for April were two members of the divan. Tommy Jones, Oriental Guide, and Tom Williams, Director. They gave an informative talk on the Potentate’s plan to increase member-ship in Acca. His plan calls for every eight members to bring in one new member. The goal for Manchester is nine new members. We already have fi ve new members lined up. We only need four more. You should have your SASA reservation by now. If not, call 1-800-556-1754 and get it. You don’t have to speak to De-nise Beverly. But be sure and tell them you are with Acca and the Manchester Shrine Club. Tickets were given out for the raffl e of the 42” HD Color T. V. See Ed Johnston if you need tickets or more tickets. Start selling.

This is a good fund raiser, also. We made 691 quarts of stew. Be-cause of our fast chicken picking ladies, the stew was packaged by 3:30 P.M. That’s one of the earliest fi nishes I can remember. Please patronize Minor’s Fences, owned by our member, Minor Hairfi eld. His ad is in the Accalette. Also, Rise & Shine Diner, owned by Connie Perkins, Minor’s lady. it is located at Sliding Hill Road and Leadbetter Road in Hanover County. These two have donated all the stew ingredients for some time. Let’s sup-port them. The following nobles and ladies are struggling with various medical problems. Past Potentate Clay Chaney-knee, Carol Daughtry, Past Potentate Marion Dawson-back, Walter “Pee-Wee” Dent-wrist, Theresa Fifer-shoulder, Ron Hansen, Past Po-tentate Bill Painter, Bob Shelton-dialysis, and Tom White. Keep them all in your thoughts and prayers. A charter member of the club passed away. Buddy Melton died April 1, 2015. He was also in the Directors Staff. He has been in poor health for some time. Ernie McGregor, former Recorder of the temple, lost his wife, Marge, recently. Our condolences to them and their families and friends. Our June meeting will feature a cold cuts plate prepared and served by our ladies. The July meeting will be our picnic. If you can help with meals, please contact Johnnie Carr. If you are a member or sweetheart and you haven’t been for a while, get up off your duff and come on back. We need everyone to keep this club successful. lf you missed the Pork Festival you missed an outstanding event. The good Lord gave us a perfect day. The food was de-licious, the beer was good and cold. The band, “The Kings of Swing” played great music you knew and could dance to, if you so desired. Mark your calendar for next year and help support the Temple. Congratulations to Acca’s Million Dollar Band on their 100th Anniversary. I thought some of the band members looked old, but not that old. But they can still play! Cary Street is August 9th. We will need a lot of help for that one. Hopefully a two pla-toon system. Save your pennies for the “Cornhole Tournament” coming in January. We are: “Acca Shriners Setting the Pace”. “Moe” Duling, Reporter

Since last writing the weather has become more reasonable; days are warmer, nights a little cool, some rain during the week, a few cool days and the day heat is present and so is the humidity. Complained about the cold days and now we will in all prob-ability complain about the heat humidity. Oh well what elese is new? Since last communication the Band has participated in the Temple’s “Pork & Music Festival” and boy did we pull a lot of Beer Taps. I believe the warm weather had something to do with the amount of beer consumed, Ha, Ha. As far as the Band per-forming Concerts, Showcase 2015 is completed and what a great time was had by all. Our special guest artist from VCU was simply outstanding. Our trombone players are good, but these guys were outstanding. Sure wish we could recruit some or all of them. Can’t say enough about the Temples’ Divan Singing Group that sang with the Band to the music of “ Battle Hymn of the Republic”. Great job guys. In addition the Band has played at Cedarfi eld Retirement Center and what a great evening it was; another full house, just the way we like it. The guys are sched-uled to play concerts at the Masonic Home of Virginia on June 1st; Play and be the Honoree during the Temple’s Spring Cer-emonial on June 6th; perform at St. Mary’s Woods on July 3rd; and several other events not laid in stone as of now.

On June 28th, 2015 the Band will be recognized during the Richmond Pops Band spring concert at the Mosque. As you all know ACCA Temple members built the Mosque and during the depression sold it to the city of Richmond. The Band has been asked to attend the concert and it will be recognized for its 100 years of continuous operation and service to ACCA Temple; the only unit or club of ACCA to have achieved this distinction. Out Band President, Ill. Sam Dunn, P.P. will have the opportunity to address the audience on behalf of its Director and Band mem-bers; should be a grand and fun evening. Our sick and wounded list has somewhat decreased over the past months. Don Godfrey is still recovering from his surgery, Floyd Puryear is doing better, and Donnie Johnson is making great strides on his comeback trail. The newest addition is Glo-ria Freye who fell or slipped at a Gun Range and broke her hip which required “Hip Replacement Surgery”. Happy to inform all that Gloria is a fast healer and is back to work thus giving Capt. Dan some what of a break in his household duties, maybe. God Bless the United States of America, its’ Military Members where ever they may be deployed, our Doctors, Nurses, and other hospital workers who care for our children in Shriners’ Hospitals for Children. We’re happy to report that the OSI Jackson Surgical Operating Table that was purchased through donations to Shriners Hospi-tals for Children-Greenville is up, and well, operational. This critical piece of equipment couldn’t have arrived at a bet-ter time. With the addition of our new Chief of Staff, Dr. Michael Wattenbarger, your Greenville Shriners Hospital now has three spine surgeons working tirelessly to transform children’s lives…and this year they are slated to perform over 120 spine surger-ies! As you know, spine surgery is an extremely delicate process of attaching implants, screws, and rods between nerves/arteries in the spine. The acquisition of the OSI Jackson Surgical Oper-ating Table has already provided our surgeon’s with improved access and radiographic visualization of surgical sites, as well as, helping to keep the patients’ bodies in optimal alignment, while minimizing harmful pressure points. One of the fi rst surgeries performed on the Jackson Table took 12 hours! The child’s spine was so twisted that his ribs sat on top of his hips. After the surgery, because of the positioning pillows and bolsters of the Jackson Table, there was no bruising, nerve damage or torn skin, which sometimes occurs during spine sur-gery. The generosity of Shriners, individuals, and organizations translates directly to transforming precious lives. Thank you for all you have done and all you will do for the children. Gratefully, Shriners Hospitals for Children-Greenville

It’s arrived, thanks to you!

Dear Nobles, It is time to announce the winner of our Hoops for LOVE™ challenge and recipient of the FEZ CUP. Congratulations to Shriners Hospitals for Children® - Philadelphia! The Philadelphia hospital raised the most amount of money for the second year in a row. Thank you to everyone who supported us throughout the challenge. You helped to the raise critical funds needed to continue to provide expert pediatric care to children with orthopae-dic conditions, burns, spinal cord injuries and cleft lip and palate regardless of the families’ ability to pay. We couldn’t have done it without you! Yours in the faith, Dale W. Stauss Imperial Potentate
