Bridge Club Schedule
As most know, Hurricane Ivan dam-aged the Pensacola Bridge Centeralmost two years ago. Club Managers,Dick Cohn and Lucy Meadows, over-saw the renovation of the club. Theexterior work--new roof and siding--was done by contractors. The redeco-ration of the interior--paint, carpet, andwindow treatments-was done primari-ly by volunteers. A big thanks is owedto each individual who contributed
their leisure hours to this effort. The refurbishing of the club was only
one of the many things contributed byDick and Lucy during their tenure withthe club. Dick assumed the managerrole 20 years ago, upon his retirementfrom the business world. Lucy joinedhim several years later, and togetherthey worked to build the club to what itis today. With the renovation complete,Dick and Lucy were eager to hand overthe management to others willing totake on the multitude of duties and toawait future storms. The Club is indeedgrateful to Dick and Lucy for theirmany years of service.
Kathleen Fullerton and Stuart Siegelassumed the management duties ofboth the Pensacola Duplicate BridgeClub and the Nice and Easy Bridge
Club. Their experience in running abridge club is very limited; however, their professional business expertise is
extensive. But, it wasreally their love of thegame that motivatedthem to take on theseresponsibilities.
Kathleen recentlyretired from managinga local, family-ownedfinancial planning
business. When she started with thefirm, they had three agents and beforeher retirement, it had grown to a multi-million dollar business.
Stuart is a practicing dentist inPensacola; therefore, his people skillsand business acumen acquiredthrough owning his own business willgreatly benefit the club as he is respon-sible for the financial obligations of theclub.
Kathleen started playing duplicatebridge on a trip to Gatlinburg with herhusband, Rod, and got hooked on thegame. She is a Bronze Life Master andlooks forward to playing more bridgenow that she is retired.
Stuart resumed playing bridge in1997 and recently became a LifeMaster. He accomplished this in spite
PENSACOLA BRIDGE CLUB’SRENOVATION AND REORGANIZATION
by Patty Moran
of a schedule that includes workingfull-time, spending time with his wife,Becky, who does not play the game, and, of course, traveling to and playingtournaments.
The two managers agree that theirmain role will be to inspire others in thePensacola area to share their enthusi-asm and passion for the game. Also, topromote the teaching of the game tofuture bridge players, and to encouragecurrent members to become moreactive at the club. The latter is a chal-lenge considering that the Club has amembership in excess of 300 mem-bers.
Unfortunately, Lucy Meadows wasunable to play that game.
So, if you are planning a trip to thePensacola area, or are passing throughon your way to another vacation spotor tournament, be sure to include agame of bridge at the renovated club. Acalendar is now available at the club’sweb site showing times and other per-tinent information about each game.Visit the web site at www.penasaco-labridgeclub.com
And, by all means, join us for the Cityof Five Flags Sectional Tournament inPensacola on November 10, 11 and 12.Mark your calendar now.

Greetings Bridge Players,
Following in the footsteps of our past president,Nancy Hagerty, I have some big shoes to fill. I cheerfullyand readily accept the duties as your new president. It willbe my constant endeavor to serve you well. I want to per-sonally congratulate Nancy for the great job she has donein leading our unit.
Our hot, humid, typical summer weather is upon us, soavoid the sun and heat and enjoy a nice game of bridgeinside a cool air-conditioned club. We need to support ourclubs with our attendance more than ever with the snow-birds back in their summer nests.
Don’t forget that our January Regional in Orlando will beJanuary 1 – 7 at the Hilton in the Walt Disney WorldResort. Make your plans now to attend. It should be anoth-er “class act” tournament. Make your reservations beforeNovember 30, for the special bridge rate of $119single/double. We are anticipating and planning for ourbest regional ever. The Hilton will be a great new experi-ence for us to enjoy as we celebrate the beginning of a newyear.
Stay cool and healthy and enjoy the game of bridge.
Your President,
Judy Schorner

When the hand was played at ourtable, our opponents undertook aconservative four spade contract. Theopening lead was a club and declarerpondered whether to ruff or to duck(dilemma). Looking at lots of possibletricks in dummy, he decided to ruff.
He then entered his hand with theking of hearts, and proceeded to pulltrumps.
I was East and I was watching part-ner follow suit and hoping againsthope that her hand contained someminor honor that would promote my10. It was not to be. Declarer now ledhis singleton diamond toward dummy. My partner did not know it was a sin-gleton and reasonably (dilemma)ducked. Declarer squiggled andsquirmed but could make only 10tricks. Now watch and see what hap-pens when declarer ducks the openinglead and allows the ace on his right towin the first club trick.
A trump will surely be played at tricktwo. Everything will then proceedexactly the same as before. Declarerwill pull trump and lead toward thediamonds. If the ace is cashed, theywill easily make 11 tricks. If not, thefollowing three card ending, after sixspades, two hearts, one club and onediamond, is predictable:
Only clubs will remain:QJx
K109 When declarer now leads a ten or
nine from his hand, and allows Westto hold the trick, he will triumph with12 tricks!
But this was animp game and anovertrick is hardly atriumph or a bigdeal except perhapsto the purists.
What happenedat the other tablewas a big deal! Ourpartners landed in six hearts! A con-tract that was not unreasonable untilthe bad trump break was discovered. The opening leader pondered whetherto cash his ace of clubs on openinglead (dilemma). The auction had givenhim no clue and persuaded by hispossible trump trick, he placed the aceon the table.
Declarer ruffed and surveyed hischances. Not too bad, he thought, justneeded two-two trumps or a stiffQueen of hearts in either hand. Hesoon learned he had a sure trumploser. His only remaining chance wasthat he could discard all five of his dia-monds to avoid the slam-killing sec-ond loser. He saw that it was possiblebut unlikely that the opponent with thetrump queen also held four spades. But it was his only chance: he pro-ceeded with that slim hope, tremblinginternally with each card played. Asyou can see it worked, it was his day,and our team’s turn to win the match. One Thousand Four Hundred andThirty provided the margin of victory.
What a wonderful hand …

There are many Sectional Tournaments that offer fine hospitality, but this lastOrlando Sectional leapt to the forefront of all the others, and needs to be commended.
In our experienced opinion, and we have been to a lot of tournaments in and out ofthe state, chairperson Laurie Pastrano did us all proud. The events were well run, theplaying quarters comfortable, the food was over the top delicious and there was plen-ty of it. It was presented in a most classy attractive way; best we have ever seen inOrlando.
Enough of this love making. Just want to give Laurie and her committee a gratefulthank you.
