Things you should know before taking the Speaking test:
• Make sure you arrive early for the Speaking test. Arriving at the last minute means you might be more stressed. What's worse, if you arrive later than the scheduled time, you will be refused for the test.
• Before the test starts, the examiner records a brief introduction, including the date, the location of the test, your name, and his/her name. Use this opportunity to relax and get used to the examiner's voice.
• Give brief replies to the introduction and ID check questions.• Do not get upset if the examiner stops you from making a long answer during any of the
part. He/she cuts you off just because time is limited for each tester and he/she has to keep you moving on to the next question/task within the allotted time.
• Remember that the Speaking test is a conversation. It is acceptable to use informal speaking style. You do not have to give a formal or academic reply to every question.
• In fact, you are only judged on your communicative ability in an IELTS Speaking test. How you are dressed or whether you shake hands with the examiner or use body language does not matter—none of these factors make any difference to your score.

Marking criteria:
(Each element counts for 25% of your final mark.)
✓ fluency and coherence
✓ vocabulary
✓ range of grammar and accuracy
✓ pronunciation
You can have a look at a sample of the Speaking test in the after-class reading part. For each part,
you will first read the prompt (what the examiner would say to you or ask you) and think how
you would respond to the questions (you may practise with your tutor); then listen to a sample
recording and learn how the test taker in the record speaks. If you can't hear the speech clearly,
you can refer to the transcript. But do it AFTER CLASS ONLY.

General Tips for Speaking:
• Speak as much English as you can.• Prepare yourself for the exam by knowing what is involved.• You need to sound natural and not as if you have learnt answers by heart (though you might
have practised that topic before). Be spontaneous and relevant.• Do not be put off by the tape recorder in the room. It is there to help you, not to help the
examiner!• Be positive. When you are in the Speaking test, the whole IELTS exam is nearly over, so smile
and breathe evenly.• It's OK to be a bit stressed. It actually helps you perform better.• Use a wide range of vocabulary. People generally use less than they know when they speak.
Practise to activate what you know.• Concentrate generally on what you are saying rather than being accurate. You will then make
fewer mistakes.• Practise speaking clearly. This does not mean slowly, but naturally and evenly.

How to be fluent:
• Concentrate on the planning and organization. These help you control your nerves and to be fluent. If you go into the exam unprepared, it will make you nervous.
• Concentrate only on the part you are doing. Forget about the other parts of the exam.
Eye contact:
• Keep eye contact with the examiner, even if he/she looks away or make notes. If you do not usually maintain eye contact in your culture, practise speaking while keeping eye contact before the exam.
• If the examiner is writing, l ooking away or not smiling, this does not mean that you are doing badly. It just means the examiner is doing his/her job. (Whether the examiner looks friendly or solemn does not has anything to do with your performance or score. It's only a matter of his/her own personality.)
