Governments, firms, and institutions confront historic chal-lenges arising from the breathtaking changes in the worldpolity and economy over the past decade. The French
government collapses due to globalization; Deutsche Bank an-nounces itself open to restructuring and Volkswagen questions as-pects of German labor institutions; Japanese firms introduce eq-uity-linked incentives; a South African firm bids on the acquisitionof a Brazilian company; Indian enterprise pleas for regulation overforeign joint venture practices.
The 1998 meeting of the Academy of International Busi-ness to be held in Vienna has the goal of presenting the bestresearch on these transformations from the perspective of firms, governments, and institutions. We encourage panels and submis-sions from business schools and social science disciplines thataddress the transformation of the world economy. Whether theapproach is functional or disciplinary, we welcome researchpapers on such topics as: the performance record ofprivatizations, the restructuring of business groups and corpora-tions in response to global competition, the fragmentation andglobalization of consumer markets, the convergence (or diver-gence) of national labor and financial institutions, culturaldimensions of radical change, and the prospects of multinationalcorporations from emerging economies.
In cooperation with the Wirtschaftsuniversitaet Wien, wewill enjoy the rich intellectual and artistic milieu of Vienna. Pre-conference activities will include a workshop on computationalmethods in the social sciences and a doctoral consortium. Themeetings will consist of a few academic panels, presentations byprominent European and multinational corporations, competitivesessions, and poster sessions. To explore the many opportunitiesprovided by the city of Vienna, the optional cultural program willinclude panoramic tours and dinner in the wine district. Partici-pants will also enjoy the Saturday night Viennese Ball to beincluded in the program.
