Career Talk co‐organised with Hospital Authority, 16 January 2016

The Academy co‐organised a Career Talk for interns with Hospital Authority(HA) on 16 January 2016 at Hospital Authority Building featuring highlightsfrom the centrally‐coordinated recruitment exercise for resident trainees. TheAcademy’s Vice‐President (Education & Examinations) Prof. Lau Chak‐singattended the career talk and briefed the interns on postgraduate specialisttraining. Prof. Lau also introduced the function, facilities and developments ofthe Academy. Vice‐President (General Affairs), Prof. Fok Tai‐fai also attendedthe career talk.

After the presentations by HA representatives and Prof. Lau, 16 specialtieswere divided into two batches with representatives from HA & the Academystationed on site to answer enquiries from the interns. The career talkattracted over 220 interns and they were very enthusiastic about specialisttraining.

The Hong Kong Jockey Club Innovative Learning Centre forMedicine (HKJCILCM) is organizing the Medical EducationConference (MEC) 2016 on 28 May 2016 at the Hong KongAcademy of Medicine Jockey Club Building. The theme forthis year’s meeting is "Postgraduate Education Assessment”.MEC 2016 is designed to showcase excellence in medicaleducation and will constitute a platform for thoughtsprovoking discussions and sharing of experiences amongmedical leaders, health policy makers, academics and alliedhealthcare practitioners.

Fourth Intake of CMS Visiting Scholar Programme

The Hong Kong Jockey Club Innovative Learning Centre for Medicine (HKJCILCM) is inviting applications for the CMS Visiting Scholar Programme(Programme).

Members of HKAM and other healthcare professionals who have graduatedfrom the IMS instructor courses (i.e. IMS Simulation as a Teaching Tool:Instructor Course, or IMS Advanced Debriefing Course) are invited to apply forthis Programme.

Successful candidates will be provided with sponsorship for this Programme.Those who have completed this Programme are expected to be activelyengaged in the Simulation‐based education activities of HKJC ILCM.

Events Attended by the President and Officers

2nd Biennial Asia‐Pacific Conference of the Society for Medical DecisionMaking (SMDM), 9 January 2016

The Academy was one of the supportingorganisations to the Conference, with a themeon end of life and ageing and shared decisionmaking. President officiated the openingceremony as the Guest‐of‐Honour. Participantswere inspired by the keynote speech on "TheImportance of Uncertainty", delivered by the former President of the RoyalCollege of General Practitioners and British Medical Journal columnist, Dr. IonaHeath. Other plenary sessions were also well‐received.

 

47th Annual Dinner of the Hong Kong Association of the PharmaceuticalIndustry (HKAPI), 18 January 2016

President joined the cocktail and shared the joyof achievement of the Association over the pastyear.

 

UNISDR Scientific and Technical Conference, 27‐29 January 2016

President attended the Conference in Geneva with the Director of HKJCDPRI, Dr. KevinHung. The Conference brought together experts from around the world to discuss how thescience and technology community would best support the implementation of the SendaiFramework for Disaster Risk Reduction 2015‐2030. A networking dinner with some closeworking partners of HKJCDPRI was hosted by President.

During his stay, President also visited and had a working meeting with Dr. Ian Norton ofWorld Health Organization to update him on the latest development of HKJCDPRI andexplore further collaboration opportunities.

 

FellowshipiCMECPD App Now Available at App Store and Google Play

To further enhance the online services for CMECPD, the Academy hasdeveloped a mobile application for capturing attendance ‐ iCMECPD App. Itis now available at Apple's App Store and Google's Play. Fellows maydownload the App by scanning the respective QR code below (or search"icmecpd" from App Store/Google Play) and install it in their smartphone

with operating system in iOS (7.1 or above) or Android (3.0 or above).

Hong Kong Medical Journal (HKMJ) launches a re‐styled website (www.hkmj.org) whichoffers visitors a more user‐friendly experience! The new layout is optimised for any screensize such as desktop, tablet or smartphone.

The HKMJ has recently received its first official impact factor in the 2014 edition of theJournal Citation Reports in the ISI Web of Knowledge published by Thomson Reuters. The2014 impact factor for the HKMJ is 0.872.

There is a steady increase in the incidence of

geriatric hip fracture in Hong Kong. Advancingage and male sex were associated with anincrease in mortality rate.

Why do Hong Kong patients need total hiparthroplasty? An analysis of 512 hips from1998 to 2010

Osteonecrosis was the most common aetiologyleading to total hip replacement although therewere different causes in both sexes leading toit.

Assessment of postoperative short‐term andlong‐term mortality risk in Chinese geriatricpatients for hip fracture using the Charlsoncomorbidity score

Charlson comorbidity score correlates well withthe short‐term and long‐term mortality ofChinese geriatric patients with operated hipfracture.

Prevalence of pre‐sarcopenia and sarcopeniain Hong Kong Chinese geriatric patients withhip fracture and its correlation with differentfactors

The prevalence of sarcopenia was very high ingeriatric hip fracture patients, and much higherthan that in community‐dwelling elderlypopulation. Sarcopenia screening andtreatment should be offered and is essential toreduce subsequent fall, subsequent fracture,fracture‐related complications and economicburden to Hong Kong.

Food and Health BureauHealth and Health Services Research FundResearch Dissemination Reports

Dissemination reports are concise informative reports ofhealth‐related research supported by funds administered bythe Food and Health Bureau, for example the Health andHealth Services Research Fund (which was consolidated intothe Health and Medical Research Fund in December 2011). Inthis edition, ten dissemination reports of projects related tohealth economics, cardiovascular diseases, mental health,and paediatrics are presented. In particular, three projectsare highlighted due to their potentially significant findings,impact on healthcare delivery and practice, and/orcontribution to health policy formulation in Hong Kong.
