HKJC ILCM UpdatesNew ServicesThe Hong Kong Jockey Club Innova�ve Learning Centre for Medicine (HKJCILCM) has recently launched two new services which have been availablefrom 23 January 2017 onwards as follows:

Library ServiceLocated on the 7/F of the Academy, the library is open to all AcademyFellows free‐of‐charge. The library collec�on has a comprehensive coverageof subjects related to medical educa�on and simula�on, such as books,periodicals and journals. A booklist categorised under different topics, andthe policy on using the library service are available on the HKJC ILCMwebsite. Fellows may visit the website or call the Centre to know more aboutthe collec�ons!

Training Equipment Loan ServicesTo enhance its services to all specialty Colleges, HKJC ILCM has introduced anewly ini�ated Skill and Pa�ent Simulators On Loan Service. This servicewould enable the specialty College to gain access to addi�onal resources fortheir examina�ons and training ac�vi�es, with the use of various kinds ofsimulators available in HKJC ILCM.

Various choices of simulators such as high fidelity manikins and skillssimulators are available for loan. Please refer to the Centre's loan requestform for the full list of equipment on the website.

HKJC DPRI UpdatesFree‐of‐charge CME/CPD accredited e‐learning courses offered by HKJC DPRI and collabora�ng ins�tutes In coopera�on with the Collabora�ng Centre for Oxford University and CUHK for Disaster and Medical HumanitarianResponse (CCOUC) of The Chinese University of Hong Kong (CUHK) and the Emergency Medicine Unit (EMU) of TheUniversity of Hong Kong (HKU), the Hong Kong Jockey Club Disaster Preparedness and Response Ins�tute (HKJC DPRI) haslaunched three e‐learning courses online for self‐study that are free‐of‐charge and CME/CPD accredited. Uponcomple�on of the course, an e‐cer�ficate will be issued by HKJC DPRI and the respec�ve collabora�ng ins�tute. All

CME/CPD Principles & Guidelines 2017‐19Please note that the CMECPD Principles & Guidelines for the cycle 2017‐19 will remain unchanged, i.e. no more than 75points can be awarded for passive par�cipa�on in a 3‐year cycle. Fellows are strongly advised to maintain a balancedCMECPD profile with a mix of different ac�vi�es, in order to capture the full benefit of different types of CMECPDac�vi�es.

The document, Principles & Guidelines 2017‐19, is available online here on the Academy website.

(Note: Individual Colleges will have their own set of guidelines based on what have been agreed at the Academy level.There may be specific rules or requirements that the Colleges determine to be relevant for their specialาes.)

Fellow's Contact Details UpdateThe Academy some�mes gets error messages when sending messages to Fellows' registered emails, which may be causedby full mailboxes, invalid addresses, etc. A valid email address is an essen�al detail for Fellows to gain access to iCMECPDaccount and view the CME/CPD profile. In order to help us maintain an up‐to‐date database, please keep us informedwhenever there are changes to your email address, mailing address or contact number by logging into your account ofiCMECPD (h�p://www.icmecpd.hk). Please also be reminded to keep your registered emails ac�ve by ensuring there issufficient mailbox capacity.

iCMECPD App now available at App Store and Google PlayTo further enhance the online services for CMECPD, the Academy has developed a mobile applica�on for capturinga�endance ‐ iCMECPD App. It is now available at Apple's App Store and Google's Play. Fellows may download the App byscanning the respec�ve QR code below (or search "icmecpd" from App Store/Google Play) and install it in theirsmartphone with opera�ng system in iOS (8.0 or above) or Android (4.3 or above).

Star�ng from 2017, Fellows may capture their a�endance by using the App to scan the QR code for CMECPD ac�vi�esheld by the Academy/Colleges at the HKAM Jockey Club Building. CME/CPD organisers will gradually use this paperless

a�endance capture system at their events from 2017 onward. With the latest version 2.6 released in late January 2017,auto‐synchroniza�on of a�endance record will be available and a message will be prompted when there is a�endancerecord pending for synchroniza�on. Fellows may upgrade the App by pressing "update" in App Store or Google Play toenjoy the new func�ons.

A university study showed that in the local Chinese popula�on, pa�ents withprostate cancer who presented with prostate cancer–related symptoms hadmore metasta�c disease and poorer survival than asymptoma�c pa�ents.

   Comparison of green pit viper and Agkistrodon halys an�venom ininhibi�on of coagulopathy due to Trimeresurus albolabris venom: an in‐vitro study using human plasma

In human plasma, both green pit viper an�venom and Agkistrodon halysan�venom can antagonise the haemotoxicity in terms of fibrinogen andclo迀�ng �me derangement induced by Trimeresurus albolabris venom.  

   Chaperones and in�mate physical examina�ons: what do male and femalepa�ents want?

Hong Kong pa�ents have a high degree of acceptance and expecta�onsabout the presence of a medical chaperone during an in�mate physicalexamina�on, but in actual prac�ce, females and especially male pa�ents arechaperoned less o�en than they would have preferred.

Research Fund for the Control of Infec�ous DiseasesResearch Dissemina�on Reports

Dissemina�on reports are concise informa�ve reports of health‐relatedresearch supported by funds administered by the Food and Health Bureau,for example, the Research Fund for the Control of Infecาous Diseases (whichwas consolidated into the Health and Medical Research Fund in December2011). In this edi�on, 13 dissemina�on reports of projects related torespiratory infec�ous diseases, fungal disease, and other viral diseases arepresented. In par�cular, three projects are highlighted due to theirpoten�ally significant findings, impact on healthcare delivery and prac�ce,and/or contribu�on to health policy formula�on in Hong Kong.

 

  Event Highlights

Career Talk co‐organised with Hospital Authority, 7 January 2017The Academy co‐organised a Career Talk for interns with Hospital Authority(HA) on 7 January 2017 at the Hospital Authority Building featuring highlightsfrom the centrally‐coordinated recruitment exercise for resident trainees.President Prof. C.S. Lau a�ended the event and briefed the interns onpostgraduate specialist training. He also introduced the func�on, facili�esand developments of the Academy. A�er the presenta�ons by the Presidentand HA representa�ves, 16 special�es were divided into two batches withrepresenta�ves from HA and the Academy answering enquiries from theinterns. The Career Talk a�racted around 200 interns and they were veryenthusias�c about specialist training.

Visit by a delega�on from Sichuan Provincial Government, 11 January 2017President Prof. C.S. Lau, Immediate Past President and Chairman of the ChinaAffairs Commi�ee Dr. Donald Li, Honorary Treasurer Dr. Y.F. Chow and EditorProf. Mar�n Wong received the delega�on from the Sichuan ProvincialGovernment. The delega�on, led by the Vice Governor of Sichuan ProvinceProf. Yang Xing‐ping, was very impressed by the innova�ve facili�es of theHKJC ILCM. Prof. Lau also took the chance to introduce our specialist trainingsystem to the Mainland colleagues. Delegates and the Academy'srepresenta�ves engaged in interes�ng discussions on the training ofspecialists in the two regions.

 

MOU Signed between the Hong Kong Academy of Medicine andChinese Medical Associa�on in Nanjing, 15 January 2017President Prof. C.S. Lau, Immediate Past President and Chairman of ChinaAffairs Commi�ee Dr. Donald Li as well as two Vice‐Presidents Dr. C.C. Lauand Dr. Gilberto Leung a�ended the 2017 Annual Conference of ChineseMedical Associa�on (CMA) on 14 January in Nanjing. A�er the mee�ng, thePresident signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) with CMA onbehalf of the Academy on 15 January to strengthen collabora�on in specialisttraining and other related areas.

Immediate Past President Dr. Donald Li, delivered a keynote speech on"Nurses: A Force for Change ‐ Improving Health Systems' Resilience, BuildingClinical Competence in Novice Prac��oners" at the conference organised bythe College of Nursing, Hong Kong. The Conference provided opportuni�esto network with like‐minded nursing professionals and exchange views ontheir crucial roles in contribu�ng to quality healthcare.

Global‐Physician Stream Leadership Workshop Series III, 11 January 2017 

Immediate Past President Dr. Donald Li, was invited as a guest speaker of theGlobal‐Physician Stream (GPS) Leadership Workshop Series III organised bythe Faculty of Medicine, The Chinese University of Hong Kong. Dr. Li sharedhis wisdom and knowledge with Year 5 GPS students on the topic of"Leadership in Professional Associa�on".

Na�onal Qualifica�on Examina�on in the MainlandUnder the CEPA arrangements, registered doctors in Hong Kong who are permanent Hong Kong residents are eligible toapply to take the Na�onal Qualifica�on Examina�on in the Mainland (國家醫師資格考試). The Medical Council of HongKong is tasked for the receipt and ve迀�ng of applica�ons for the examina�on.

Applica�ons to sit for the 2017 Na�on Qualifica�on Examina�on are now called for by the Na�onal Medical Examina�onCenter of the People's Republic of China. All applicants for this year's examina�on are required to submit theirapplica�ons online. Details and the applica�on form are available on the website of the Na�onal Medical Examina�onCenter (h�p://www.nmec.org.cn). The closing date is 22 February 2017. Applicants who have already submi�ed theirapplica�ons online before the closing date are required to submit the suppor�ng documents in person to the MedicalCouncil Secretariat for ve迀�ng and onward submission to the Na�onal Medical Examina�on Center on or before 3 March2017.
