Principal’s Report

Sara Davey - Academy Principal

It may have been the last week of term before the Christmas holidays but here at MBA the pace has definitely not slowed down. It’s been a jam-packed week with news of great sporting performances from our students at the Cornwall School Winter Games, trips out for sports fixtures, trade fairs, geography fieldwork, carol singing and the Christmas pantomime at the Hall for Cornwall. Revision folders have been handed out to Year 11 students and learning across the Year groups has carried on apace. On top of this we have even found the time to indulge in lots of festive activities.

On Wednesday we had our annual Christmas lunch in the canteen. This year the fantastic traditional food was served to students seated on long tables, decorated in their House colours. It was rather reminiscent of a scene from Harry Potter, with a real sense of House family in evidence as staff joined the students at the tables to eat and chat in the relaxed atmosphere. Thank you, as ever, to the canteen staff for their amazing efforts in producing such great food and to Miss Osborne and her team for the table decorations.

On Thursday evening we held our annual Carol Service at Madron Church. This was, as ever, a magical evening with student readers and performers really rising to the occasion and delivering a wonderfully festive evening. It was lovely to see so many parents, staff, students and members of the community in the packed congregation enjoying the festive cheer.

Today we judged the annual House Christmas tree competition. All the trees looked spectacular, and it was obvious that a lot of effort had been put in by students and staff from all Houses. It was very close, but in the end Purple House was deemed the winner. Well done!

We staged Mounts Bay Academy’s first ever Santa Run today. 140 staff and students ran a course around the 3G pitch to raise money for the RNLI. It really was a glorious spectacle.

All that remains is for me to wish you all a very merry Christmas and I look forward to seeing you all in the New Year.

See you back at Mounts Bay Academy on Tuesday 3rd January 2017

Christmas Carol Concert

Madron Church rang with festive music and readings on Thursday evening at the annual Mounts Bay Carol Service. The service was conducted by the Reverend Tim Hawkins, who warmly welcomed the congregation to the church.

There were beautiful musical performances from the Academy choir, boys choir, HPI choir, Year 11 singers, string ensemble, concert band and Emma Eddy who played a wonderful duet with string teacher Tim Boulton. All students performed beautifully in the picturesque setting, which complemented their repertoire perfectly.

The readings in between the musical numbers were delivered engagingly by the student readers, who all performed with great confidence and poise. ‘Angel’s Message‘ from Luke chapter 2 was read by Nina Micciche, Oscar Clive and Horace Halling from Year 11. Tia Smart, Isla Harvey, Alice Micciche and Kempa Marks from Year 7 read ‘Nativity Play’ by Clare Bryan. ‘Carol for Last Christmas’ by Norman Nicholson was read by Iris Rainbow, Luke Stoten and Amber Sanders from Year 9. Kim Shail, Isaac Thompson and Amber Symons from Year 10 read ‘The Shepherd’s Tale’ by James Kirkup. ‘Christmas’ by John Betjeman was read by Grace Tswei, Caitlin Rendle, Logan Aspden and Lois Willett-Green from Year 8.

A collection held during the service raised funds for both Madron Church and the RNLI, which is Mounts Bay’s chosen charity. Afterwards the performers and congregation enjoyed mince pies and hot drinks at Landithy Hall.

On Sunday 11th December the Young Enterprise team set off to Truro to take part in the Christmas Trade Fair. The students competed against 15 other schools and colleges who were all there to promote their products and conduct market research. The Mounts Bay team are still in the process of creating their product so went with the plan to sell Christmas items in order to earn capital and also to speak with possible clientele as part of their own market research.

The students sold driftwood Christmas trees and reindeer food which were a huge success. Credit to Andre Green who started his shift on the Trade Stand and within 15 minutes had sold 8 bags of reindeer food. A future salesman in the making! Lily and Alisha took the first shift on the stand where they were questioned by a number of judges and were complimented on their professional responses. Other members of the team did well, speaking to other judges and business advisors from other schools and colleges.

As trading drew to an end there were presentations for different awards. A few schools took most prizes but Mounts Bay took a Special Young Enterprise Board Award for their Christmas Trade stand. A massive achievement which has spurred the team on to keep designing and planning their product.

Their product, once finalised and manufactured, will be available to buy online and through their social media sites.

A huge well done to all those who came and took part on Sunday. It was a cold yet brilliant day.

Keep up to date with the team’s progress on their various social media pages.

Year 10 History students are at present studying the USA from 1920 to 73 and developing their analysis and extended writing skills. A recent extended piece of writing was on the 1932 American election between Herbert Hoover and Franklin Delano Roosevelt. This has been quite topical considering the recent elections in the USA. A number of students produced exemplary answers. These were Grace Davis, Nevah Law, Erin Neal, Rebecca Oakes, Abigail-Rose Wallis, Niamiah Jack, Xavier Jenkins, Holly Locke, Konnah Sanson and Fletcher Stevenson. One such example is the one from Grace Davis. To see her answer in full, click here to visit the MBA website: http://mountsbay.org/history-excellence/

7 Warm have been working hard towards their chosen adventurer film. This week in both lessons they have chosen their adventurer and begun more in-depth research which will help them when creating their factual film. Their research has been structured in the form of storyboards. The class have been excited to share their work with peers and have used the feedback to improve their planning.

As well as the brilliant research, 7 Warm also received a personal message from Helen Glover and Steve Backshall. Many of the class had researched these two adventurers and when photos of their work was sent to the couple the class received a lovely message telling them that it was ‘brilliant that they are starting their journey to become adventurers from such an early age’. An amazing opportunity that left the class excited and motivated. Polly Rainbow said, “I can’t believe that was actually them, talking to us!”

REAL Project Message from Helen Glover and Steve Backshall

The class were very lucky to have the opportunity of visiting the Media Studio to see Miss Fisher who told them all about the green screen and other exciting ways they can use media to aid their film making. After speaking to Miss Fisher students were able to incorporate the different ideas into their planning.

After Christmas 7 Warm will begin the production of their films. The class have worked brilliantly and we wish them a Happy Christmas.

Coding Class

Year 8 have been coding on the RaspberryPi this week, using electronics to create circuits and Python3 to instruct the components to work.

Mr Elliott, Lead Practitioner for Computing said “Giving students the chance to code electronic circuits makes the programming tasks a lot more real to the students, giving a great sense of satisfaction when they see LEDs light up or buzzers make a sound”.

This was the fourth week of their coding lessons, having looked at creating buildings using code in Minecraft and creating songs using code in SonicPi.

The RaspberryPi are cheap, flexible computers that can be used in many ways. There will be courses for parents before Easter, announced in the newsletter.

Students in Year 7 have had been undertaking a modern and completely new STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Maths) project called ELEMENT, under the CARTS faculty. The issue "How does a plastic bottle impact the world?", the solution? Who knows at present? Students are aiming to assess, evaluate and begin to offer practical solutions to one of the world's biggest problems.

ELEMENT is committed to providing students in Year 7 and Year 8 modern and advanced learning, taking advantage of the most up-to-date tools at the students’ disposal. The techniques are then applied to real world problems in need of innovative solutions. This practical approach to investigating whole-world problems will allow all students to connect to their learning in an emotional level to discover why they need the skills being taught in the project.

Year 7 students have undertaken rigorous research to understand the how marine litter reaches the shores of the UK, practising advanced fieldwork techniques in school, to take these skills out into the local environment (Poldhu Cove) and collect accurate and quality data from which to inform their studies moving forward. After completing their studies at Poldhu Cove, students performed a beach clean to remove marine litter and extend their social responsibilities to outside of the classroom. The results of this collection will allow students to produce an end project product that will be exhibited at the end of the semester. Following the project brief products designed and manufactured from marine litter will be used to further collect marine litter at subsequent beach cleans, offering an innovative solution from completely reusable means.

Through the use of FireFly and GoogleClassroom, the level of collaboration and technical skills gained through practical classwork has been exceptional. Students have all accessed, worked on and developed work instantaneously, developing collaboration skills that will feed into the modern workplace, preparing them to become workers of the future.

Although in its infancy, the project is proving really successful and students have been enjoying learning in a modern context, aiming to help provide solutions to real world problems. By linking challenging theoretical and practical skills under the clear context of sustainability, students can see how their local solution can have a real impact on a global scale.

This semester, Year 8 students have embarked on a new STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Maths) project called ELEMENT. Using an adapted version of the enquiry process (plan, research, investigate, analyse, design, create and evaluate), students must explore the surrounding topics associated with the essential question; “How can we engineer a sustainable world?"

ELEMENT is committed to providing students in Year 7 and Year 8 with modern and advanced learning, taking advantage of the most up-to-date tools at the students’ disposal. The techniques are then applied to real world problems in need of innovative solutions. This practical approach to investigating whole-world problems will allow all students to connect to their learning in an emotional level to discover why they need the skills being taught in the project.

Year 8 students have been researching the associated problems with a rising global population and unsustainable growth whereby finding preventions and solutions is key to the survival of Earth. Students will be given a key component of a sustainable town they must design and create using Computer Aided Design and 3D printing. They will then make informed decisions to consider the sustainability of their project. On Wednesday morning students took a field trip to Plan-It Earth, Sancreed, to see a fantastic example of sustainable living in the local area. Students were treated to a tour of the eco-sustainability project by parent Rachel Smart-Knight and conducted surveys and assessments of the environmental factors and initiatives that have been taken into consideration through its construction. Karting Champion

I started to go karting four years ago and have worked hard to improve my driving skill. I have competed in the championships at Coast to Coast Karting over the past four years and won five out of the six championships I have entered. The points system is measured in the best 10 and worst 10 results over the season. It is about consistency more than the odd win. I had 95 points to achieve 1st place, just three in front of Ged who took second place and six points in front of Jack who was third, both of whom also attend Mounts Bay Academy. In total there were 16 drivers who competed in the championship. We learn obstacle avoidance, racing lines, drifting and race craft (respecting other drivers).

I aim to continue racing at Coast to Coast Karting and win one more championship to break the record for individual championships won. In the future I aim to improve my racing further by racing in faster karts in a championship in the South West.

We all highly recommend this homegrown panto with Kernow King at the helm. Local director, Simon Harvey, and local choreographer, Helen Tiplady, have conjured up a really magical feel good treat. We had an amazing time, topped off by the fact that all nine of the leading cast members came out afterwards to chat with our group. What a lovely bunch of people. Year 7 Take on MacbethThis semester in Drama 7C/E1 have been working on Shakespeare. We have been looking at Macbeth, or as it’s often referred to ‘The Scottish Play’.

First of all the group experienced Macbeth as a ‘whoosh play’. This is a very entertaining fast-paced exercise where everyone has a go at playing one of the characters and delivering their lines. Each time students hear the word ‘whoosh’ the scene is cleared and different students take on the play’s characters. This creates an overview of the whole play in thirty minutes.

Next we concentrated on the Witches Scene and in threes the students learnt their lines and delivered them according to their own interpretation. The students learnt how using effects, including smoke and lighting, create a really spooky atmosphere.

On Monday 28th November I received an email from the England Hockey Performance Centre stating that I had been offered a place at their training camps throughout 2017. This will include two hour training sessions in Taunton on a Monday night and two sessions amounting to 6 hours on a Sunday. During the training sessions there are four tournaments that you are selected to attend which take place all over the region. Other players from different clubs and schools around Cornwall have been selected to attend. Coaching is given by ex-England U18 coaches who train you to your highest level.

Well done to Ellie Dash who won a gold medal for indoor rowing at the Winter School Games. Ellie received a special message from Olympic Gold medallist, Helen Glover, congratulating her on her performance after Ellie had messaged Helen to thank her for inspiring her to try rowing after meeting her at the victory parade in Penzance.

Ellie achieved 103.73% in the event, well above the 85% needed to qualify for regional level competitions. In fact, Ellie’s performance at the Cornwall Schools Winter Games was better than the result achieved by the winner of this year’s British Year 8 Girls’ Indoor Rowing title. Shirley Pitts of Pendeen Rowing Club is looking at entering Ellie into indoor rowing competitions through the gig rowing club with the British Rowing Association.

Also huge congratulations to all of the MBA rowers who all did fantastically well. Ellie Year 8, Lucy Year 10 and Jenny Year10 all achieved over the 85% required for regionals.

On Friday 9th December the U16 hockey team travelled to Penair to compete in the Winter School Games.

The Team started off a bit slowly in the first game against Poltair but managed to beat them 2-0. Our next opponents were Bude where we beat them 3-1. We then played Penair and managed to scrape a 2-2 draw. And finally against Liskeard where we were frustrated in the second half and unlucky to not get more goals, that game ended up 3-0 to MBA.

We were then through to the semi-final where we were put up against strong opposition, Launceston. MBA defended expertly and managed to grind out a well deserved draw. The game then went to penalty flicks. MBA decided to go second, and with quality keeping from James Williamson and an excellent flick from Josh Bainbridge, MBA were well deserved finalists.

In the final we came up against Penair once again. With both teams creating chances but unable to convert, the game finished once again 0-0. Again it went to flicks. Penair decided to let MBA take the first flick. For the first three flicks neither team managed to put it past the keeper. But with both teams scoring the final two flicks it went down to sudden death. Up stepped the Penair player and with James Williamson dancing in goal, he managed to put the Penair player off and make a great save. Harry Doyle then stepped up for the flick to win the game and put it past the keeper. It was a great day with some great hockey and MBA thoroughly deserved the win.

Year 9 Rugby Final

Well done to the Year 9 rugby team who put up a gutsy and brave display in the Cornwall Cup final this week. Their attitude, positive mindset and effort were fantastic and they have learnt a great deal this season. They have only been defeated twice this year, both by Truro school.

MBA started the final in great form pinning Truro back into their half and the forwards worked really hard to create an opening. However, as the match continued and MBA tired, Truro were able to break through with three break away tries against the run of play. Playing catch up rugby, the MBA team battled until the final whistle and had to settle for a 39-0 loss. Credit to all the players and Jaidan Prowse who was nominated Man of the Match. Mounts Bay wants to congratulate Kiera Goddard, Zelah Yuill, Lucy Rendle, Chloe Shrosbree and Kiah Richards on competing for Cornwall in girls rugby in their respective age groups this season.

Although the season is over sooner than they would like they have all worked incredibly hard to get this far. The girls have trained every Friday at various clubs around the county and have played games against Devon, Dorset and Gloucestershire. They beat Glocestershire last weekend at both Under 15's and Under 18's level and our girls formed a part of that victory.

It has been a joy to watch the girls progress from school, to club and to county level. I am extremely proud of each one of them.

Particular congratulations must go to Chloe who has impressed the Cornwall coaches and now has the opportunity to trial for the South West Regional Academy at the end of January. We wish you the best of luck Chloe.

If any of you are yet to try rugby and want to give it a go you can attend our school club on Thursdays after school (January- Easter) or go down to the Pirates who have a girls team who train on a Wednesday evening.

We are pleased to announce that the staff team remain unbeaten, with Thursday’s match result being a 12-12 draw with the Year 11 mixed squad.

It was a fast and furious game, officiated well by our Year 10 Netball stars Esme and Megan.

The students took the lead with a 2-0 advantage, staff clawed it back to a 3-2 lead going into the second 3rd. Students pulled away again in the second 3rd with a 7-4 advantage over staff going into the final 3rd.

The staff played well, upped their game and turned over numerous balls to go 12-11 up. In the last few seconds of the game students clawed 1 back to finish 12-12.

Well done to all involved, great fun and a further £15 raised for the Invictus Trust, with over 80 students supporting both teams.

Have a fantastic Christmas and we look forward to the rematch next semester when one of their key players recovers from injury.
