Data for 2017 may be incomplete.

The Year 12 students of the Class of 2017 reinforced the College’s outstanding local and international academic reputation. Students had the opportunity to undertake either the NSW Higher School Certificate (HSC) or the International Baccalaureate Diploma Programme (IB DP) and achieved stunning outcomes in both programs. Of the 2017 cohort, 155 girls successfully completed studies towards the NSW Higher School Certificate (HSC) and 37 completed the requirements for the IB Diploma. (An overview of requirements of both programs, together with information regarding the Australian Admission Tertiary Rank (ATAR) is on page 4.)

At a local level, Monte again ranked well within the State’s top 100 schools, as it has for more than a decade. Published HSC leagues tables do not reveal the full story, as they do not include the results of the IB Diploma. They also cannot report the significant number of university scholarships awarded to Monte students.

At Monte, students are well prepared for success in their choice of HSC or IB DP as the learning of all Year 7 to 10 students is shaped by the inquiry based framework provided by the IB Middle Years Programme (MYP). The girls simultaneously complete requirements for the NSW ROSA (Record of School Achievement) as required by the NSW Education Standards Authority (NESA).

In an emerging local climate of often uninformed hyperbole about the IB Diploma, we are confident that the College is in a position to offer each young woman genuine choice to select a program of study that most appropriately meets her needs and capitalises on her strengths and interests. Distinguished Achievers

More than half of the College’s HSC candidates appeared in the NSW Board of Studies Distinguished Achievers list and were included in the HSC Honour Roll published in the Sydney Morning Herald on 15 December, 2017. To be included in the Honour Roll, a student must achieve a mark of at least 90% in an HSC course. The full Honour Roll is too extensive to include here, but the College congratulates each of these students.

HSC or IB Diploma – what is the difference?

Both the HSC and the IB Diploma require students to commit to a significant increase in workload compared to Year 10. Both courses of study require students to be willing to develop independent learning skills as well as effective time management and organisational skills. The choice between the HSC and the IB Diploma is made by students, taking into account their own learning styles and subject preferences. Resources at Monte are equitably shared by students in both programs.

The delivery, assessment, grading and scaling of subjects for the HSC and IB DP differ. Below are some comparisons between the two programs.

In Years 7 to 10, all Monte students undertake a course of study that meets the requirements for both the NSW Education Standards Authority (NESA) and the International Baccalaureate Middle Years Programme. At the completion of Year 10, as shown below, students elect to undertake either the NSW Higher School Certificate (HSC) or the IB Diploma Programme (IB DP). Both options prepare the students for opportunities at tertiary institutions, locally and internationally.
