Academic Planning and Goal Setting Lesson Plan School Counselor: Susan Russo Date: May 9,16, 23, 28 (2018) Activity: Academic Planning and Goal Setting Grade(s): 6 ASCA Mindsets & Behaviors (Domain/Standard):
• B-LS 3: Use time-management, organizational and study skills • B-LS 7: Identify long and short-term academic, career and social/emotional goals
Learning Objective(s) (aligns with competency):
1. Students will develop a short-term 4th quarter academic goal. 2. Students will understand their academic options and draft their Educational and Career Planning Form
through the 10th grade. 3. Students will develop a long-term social/emotional goal to complement their career goal.
Materials:
• “Mix and match” laminated class cards and posters representing the Educational and Career Planning Form
• Copies of the Educational and Career Planning Form for each student • Multiple copies of the MS and HS Program of Studies • Pencils • Pre- and post-survey
Procedure:
● Students complete Pre-survey ● Review Success Strategies (modified from “Avoiding Test Anxiety” in the Academic Advisement
Program by Lisa King) o Note: Later Reveal the source and discuss: “What does this tell you?” If you do these things
every day, you don’t have to worry about the tests! (AND you’ll be successful in school.) ● Students choose one skill to focus on for the remainder of the year and detail how they will change
their daily routine to achieve that goal Think-Pair-Share ● Review Educational and Career Planning Form and MS and HS Program of Studies
o Complete the column on the right based on Career Key info from last month’s Naviance lesson o In teams, students sort their group of classes listed on the laminated cards and place them in
order on the posters representing the Educational and Career Plan. (To add competition: encourage teams to be the first to get their cards posted in the right order.) With a member of each group representing their team, review the math sequence, World Language Sequence and possible elective sequences with the class.
o At your table, search the program of studies for electives you can take through 10th grade. Talk about which sound interesting to you and write down your individual choices up through 10th grade on your forms. Note: this might change! This is a chance to explore and think about the possibilities!
o Complete the following sentence on the back of your planning form: Starting today, I will use the success strategy of: ______________________ by doing the following
things every day: _________________________________________________. In my future, I will be able to: [insert social/emotional goal here]
o Complete post-survey Collect the Educational and Career Planning forms and make copies of each to send home with student for discussion/signature from parent.
Plan for Evaluation: How wil l each of the following be collected? Process Data:
• Number of students who participated will be recorded: All 6th grade students should receive this lesson and complete an academic plan. I will take a list of all 6th graders and check against the names of completed academic planning forms to see who missed lesson. These students will complete a makeup abbreviated lesson in the library during extended TA on May 28.
Perception Data:
• Review academic planning maps for completion; those who did not complete it adequately will be invited to the May 28 makeup lesson.
• Pre-post survey: On a scale of 1 to 5, 1=you strongly disagree to 5=you strongly agree: 1) KNOWLEDGE: I am aware of many elective options in high school. 2) SKILLS: I am using a success strategy to end 4th quarter strong. 3) ATTITUDE: I believe that the course I set today can affect how well I do in my future.
Outcome Data:
• 4th Quarter Grades, reduction in number of students on the Academic Watch List; higher enrollment in rigorous classes
Follow-Up:
• Meet individually with students who are continuing to perform poorly academically
