The Biology degree provides theoretical and practical training (laboratory and field research) in the main areas of biology including biodiversity, human biology, ecology, evolution, physiology, genetics and microbiology; all areas are approached through a combination of traditional and modern methods originating in the fields of cellular and molecular biology, biochemistry and biotechnology.

This degree course provides a solid foundation in the area of biochemistry, creating the scientific and technological skills to allow students: a) the equivalence of the cycles taught at European institutions of the same level; b) to continue with a reasonable level of autonomy to advanced training in biochemistry or related areas in second cycle studies in a European institution; c) to enter directly into the job market.

The Engineering degree brings a solid scientific foundation together with basic techniques, permitting the graduate to either enter directly in the workforce or continue studies in the areas of agricultural engineering, food engineering or geographic engineering. This degree is unique in its flexibility, permitting the student to delay the choice of a specialisation until the second cycle, thereby allowing for a more careful and informed decision.

AGRICULTURAL ENGINEERING This degree supplies well-rounded technicians with specific training in a range of agricultural sciences such as in agro-food marketing, in order to prepare them to adapt to a range of different agricultural fields or those related to agriculture, whether in industry or the service sector, in food production or in rural development. Students may also continue to second cycle studies in agricultural engineering or related master’s degrees, such as those in post-harvest science and technology, consumer and nutritional science or in viticulture and oenology.

FOOD ENGINEERING Graduates from this programme have a specific knowledge set permitting them to conceive, plan and utilise industrial equipment and technological processes and to carry out professional functions in the sectors of the production, transformation and commercialisation of food. They may also continue to second cycle studies in food engineering or related master’s degrees, such as those in food science, technology and safety, post-harvest science and technology, consumer and nutritional science or in viticulture and oenology.

GEOGRAPHICAL ENGINEERING Holders of this degree are prepared to perform topographic functions utilising satellite positioning and navigating, analysing and processing remote sensing images working either in companies or in local or public administration. They may also continue their studies into the second cycle, pursuing a degree in geographic engineering or a similar master’s degree such as geographic information systems.

This course provides multi- and interdisciplinary training enabling students to scientifically understand environmental processes and those of ecosystems as well as how they are affected by factors such as pollution of the air, water and soil. A third year scheme allows students to develop an autonomous project which, if feasible and innovative, may open up interesting opportunities for future jobs or self-employment. Students may also continue their studies into the second cycle in a range of areas including environmental science and technology.

Course Director: Prof. Mário Fernandes

The main objective of the Master of Astronomy is to complement and extend the training of graduate students in astronomy, physics, mathematics and related fields. In particular, in order to improve their preparation for a research career in Astronomy, through their subsequent enrolment in a Doctoral Programme in Astronomy.

The Master’s of Science in Biodiversity, Genetics and Evolution provide advanced training for First Cycle Degree holders in Biology, Agricultural Science and Veterinary Medicine or other related degrees for those students who wish to obtain a Postgraduate degree in the area of Biodiversity and Evolutionary Biology or who wish to further their knowledge or to apply the same. All levels of organisation will be studied from the gene and genome level to that of populations and ecosystems. The programme intends to provide advanced training in the use of new analytical methods and new technologies, particularly in the application of geographic information systems and techniques of molecular and populational genetics.

The overall goal of this master is to give students a solid foundation and an advanced knowledge in emerging areas of Cell and Molecular Biology. After the course, students will be able to:Explain and describe the fundamental processes in cell and molecular biology, how they take place and are controlled;Integrate the acquired knowledge from a whole perspective on cell mechanisms, at biochemical, physiological and molecular levels;Use basic laboratory skills in molecular biology and cell biology;Communicate and work efficiently in a team, prepare and give a scientific presentation, and organize their work according to an agreed time plan;Demonstrate capacity to analyze and comment pertinent scientific information;Demonstrate awareness of ethical aspects of research;Demonstrate an ability to identify his/her need to constantly update and for life-long learning.

In recent decades, society has witnessed an ever growing human demand for water resources due not only to the rise in population but also to changes in water consumption and hygiene resulting from increased standards of quality of life. Simultaneously, new agricultural techniques and methods plus novel industrial activities and the re-engineering of the same have sought to optimise production and reduce costs. It has, thus, become necessary to search out alternative sources in order to meet the expanding need for water whilst also developing novel uses of existing resources. In addition to the challenges regarding the extraction and use of hydraulic resources, water ecosystems are undergoing attacks of diverse intensity and origin, despite rising societal awareness of the issue and the need to institute measures to control and reduce the pernicious effects on water quality. These are some of the disequilibria acting against the self-purification of the aquatic ecosystem and the consequent challenges for water purification for human consumption.

This is the context in which the Master’s in Science in Biology and Water Quality Management is offering post-graduate training to supply the skills needed to resolve issues related to the biological quality of water and its uses. Special emphasis is give to the use of biology in evaluating water quality by focusing on those aspects related to main public health issues related to water as well as Portuguese and EC legislation in this regard. The goal is to make water available for a multiplicity of uses such as environmental protection, human consumption, recreation, fishing and agriculture. The role of live organisms in wastewater treatment is a key issue and the application of notions of ecotoxicology to the management and conservation of water resources is a priority. Students with Master’s degrees in Biology and Water Quality Management are able to hold positions in laboratories specialised in water analysis, in the service sector and companies involved in the planning and management of water quality, in local service sectors and governments, in institutions working in health and the environment, in water treatment and wastewater treatment institutions and research laboratories.

This master’s degree imparts theoretical concepts and high-level techniques in order to furnish highly specialised workers to the sectors in biochemistry-related fields, namely life sciences, health and biotechology. Biochemistry master’s holders are set to undertake fundamental or applied research or to carry out highly specialised technical functions.

Why the Master’s of Science in Biochemistry? The discipline aims to define and characterise all biomolecules, analysing their structural and functional properties and their interconversions and interactions. It seeks to understand and integrate all biological process along the scale of increasing complexity. Thus, it has always been a thoroughly interdisciplinary science. Biochemists are indispensible is the following productive proccesses: providing insight into division and cellular differentiation at the molecular level (phenomena with implications spanning oncology to tissue engineering); manipulating molecules and cells in order to achieve the optimisation/production of biologically active substances (such as in the development of novel drugs); developing strategies for the systhesis and purification of biological substances; and monitoring all the processes mentioned above and more. Thus it is logical that a qualified workforce must be trained, particularly in the areas of critical analysis and the resolution of biochemical issues at the molecular and cellular levels.

The Master’s of Science in Biochemistry targets, primarily, first cycle degree holders in biochemistry or related fields wanting to improve and broaden their expertise in preparation for demanding careers requiring a high level of autonomy and combined with a drive for self-improvement and constant innovation.

This degree provides the following competences: critical thinking regarding new challenges in food consumption; understanding of the factors currently determining food consumption and the respective implications of the link between food technology and the development of novel products; the ability to raise awareness of and change attitudes to healthy eating habits; insight into the processes of creation, development and implementation of novel food products, as well as the adaptation of existing products; and the ability to conceive and implement research projects in consumer science and nutrition.

This degree prepares competent, versatile and able professionals, whether to analyse common environmental problems or to take detailed decisions and find solutions that are both ecological and economically viable. The skills and knowledge acquired as a result of this programme will allow its graduates to take on middle or upper level technical positions whether in the public sector or in the private or in self-employment in the environmental sector consulting firms and those in the service sector, local governments and governmental agencies and laboratories, industry and teaching.

Students completing this post-graduate training will have acquired the knowledge necessary to understand the biological aspects that are essential to the applied fields of ecology and biodiversity, landscape ecology and planning, environmental education and nature tourism, technology of environmental management, and the environmental characterisation, monitoring and recovery; they will also have acquired the most up-to-date techniques of these fields. The degree is intended for first cycle degree holders in the areas of biology, geology, environmental science, landscape architecture, agronomy or other related fields.

The Master’s Programme in Agricultural Engineering aims to provide:Technical and scientific know-how to enable professionals to resolve problems and design solutions in the agronomy, agro environmental and agro industrial sectorsExpertise to fulfil management responsibilities in the agricultural and agro industrial fieldsSkills necessary for the design and implementation of projects and innovative studies in the agronomy and agro industrial fields

Geographic Engineering prepares students for the study, measure and representation of the Earth whether with traditional mapping methods or by way of digital geographical information. It examines the techniques for observing and measuring the Earth with the aim of acquiring positional and qualitative information about the globe’s surface. It utilises methods both earthbound and spatial for data gathering, especially satellites observing the Earth for positioning and navigation. The field currently serves as support for numerous other disciplines, namely environmental studies and planning.

This degree imparts academic training and practice required for understanding issues of the gathering and treatment a wide range of geographic data, including: the production of topographic maps, the implementation and supervision of geodetic positioning investigation, the treatment of images from satellites and aerial photography; and the implementation and management of geographic information systems. The training seeks to provide extensive knowledge of the various disciplines of Geographic Engineering and a critical sense enabling its future engineers the ability to autonomously decide and conduct work in this area, rather than being mere users of the technology.

The Master’s in Science in Physics aims to:convey knowledge of classic and modern physics to underpin the development of explanatory models and the understanding of a vast range of phenomena.provide mathematics and computational tools, fundamental for formulating and quantitatively analysing problems and modelstrain students in experimentation, data analysis, various forms of instrumentation, techniques of measurement, the conceptualisation and design of experimental projectsdeliver practice in theoretical scientific investigation or professional experience as a physicist in a business environmentprepare students to continue their academic studies in a doctoral program in physics, physics engineering, other areas of engineering or in any of a number of pluridisciplinary degrees (biophysics, environmental science, resource management, etc)prepare students for the exercise of higher level technical positions and those in research and development in governmental organisms, in the private sector or as self-employed specialists. Other sectors include governmental laboratories, universities, research institutes, schools, quality control, hospitals, financial service sector, banking and insurance, industry, IT businesses.
