Keeping Bridge Safe!
Principal Dr. Brake presents Bridge School Security Officer Harry Vera with a certificate of
achievement issued by the Center for Domestic Preparedness. The Center is an agency that works
with the U.S. Department of Homeland Security and operates in conjunction with the Federal
Emergency Management Agency (FEMA). In an effort to provide the most up-to-date security
practices at Bridge enhanced security measures will be implemented this year to raise the level of
security for students, staff and visitors at Bridge Elementary. Thank you Officer Vera for doing
your part to keep Bridge School a safe school!
The ultimate security is your
understanding of reality.

Safety First! Parents: Please do not drive on the parking lot/
playground areas to drop-off or pick-up your children*.
This creates an unsafe situation for all of our students and
staff. Also, as a courtesy to our neighbors please don‘t
park on the permit parking only sides of the streets sur-
rounding Bridge.
Thank you for your cooperation in these matters.
*Please note: Students who are injured and on crutches may be dropped off at the
back door with doctor documentation and prior administrative approval.

Letters to the President from our Kindergarten
Kindergarten News Letter to the President
Kindergarten students and teachers teamed up with Ms. Chrisman to send an art piece and a letter to President Obama.
With the help of Mrs. Dotson and Ms. Evangelista each Kindergartener wrote their own letter wishing our new president ―Good
Luck‖ in his new position, and with the help of Ms. Chrisman each student also completed a coloring page with a picture of Presi-
dent Obama. Our class is very excited about the project!
Graduation Picture Day will take place on Thursday, March 5. The $10 Graduation Fee is due on Friday, March 6.
School-Home Connection We will be learning about the St. Patrick‘s Day holiday and Healthy Teeth Part 2.
What will your child learn in Math? Identifying and counting, and paying for items with dimes to $1.00; counting
by 10‘s to 100; writing numerals to 20; comparing length and identifying shorter and longer; creating and reading an ABC color pat-
tern; acting out ―some, some more‖, and ―some, some went away‖, story problems; measuring and comparing the capacity of con-
tainers.
At Home: ask your child to use knives, forks, and spoons to make an ABC pattern; make price tags using amounts such
as 20 cents, 50cents, etc., to $1.00, and put them on kitchen items or small toys. Allow your child to use dimes to ―purchase‖ these
items. Visit the Saxon website for more activities. www.SaxonMath.com/MathKActivities.
What will your child learn in Language Arts? Theme: ―So many exciting things happen at school‖ and ―School
is a place for making friends.. Your child is reading I Love School! By Philemon Sturges and Sparkie and Eddie: The First Day of
School by Tony Johnston. Children will have a chance to compare their own school experiences with others‘. We will also be re-
reading stories from the theme ―Friends at School.‖ When rereading, we always encourage children to chime in on familiar words or
phrases, to ask questions, and to make predictions. High-Frequency words like and he.
At Home: High-Frequency Words: Create word cards for your child‘s high-frequency words and make sentences with
word cards: I like to go to _____. Take turns completing the sentences. Take turns naming a rhyming word for he. Say the words in a
cumulative list: he, bee; he, bee, she: he, bee, she, me; and so on.
Everyday Writing: invite your child to help you make a number story about people and things at school. Fold a few sheets of paper in
half to make a book. Your story might tell about numbers of objects, places, or people at school: 1 teacher, 2 balls 3 children, etc.
The story might begin with a high number and go down to zero on the last page. Sing or recite the nursery rhyme ―Mary Had a Little
Lamb.‖ Ask your child to imagine that he/she has a pet that comes to school on day. Talk about it and have your child draw a picture
and write about it.
Read together: Encourage your child to read or listen to stories for at least 20 minutes every day. Look for these books at your local
library:

CELBRATE 100 DAYS OF SCHOOL! On February 20th, students from 101 and 111 cel-
ebrated the 100th day of school. The students
had a blast dressing up as 100 year old men and
women and participated in a parade throughout
the school. The children wrote about what they
would do if they had 100 dollars to spend. Here
are some of their great ideas: “I would but a
car”-Gabriela. “I would buy a school bus”-Oliwia.
“I would buy a large boat”-Roberto.
UNCOVERING FOSSILS Have you ever wondered what has existed on Earth? Well, the 2nd graders have. The students or should I say scientists of Room 109 recently uncovered fossils. A fossil is what is left of an animal or plant that lived long ago. A fossil is an imprint in a rock and that is exactly what the students made. They placed a small plant inside a flattened ball of clay. They covered the plant with clay and let it get hard. The next day the students used tools to gently uncover the plant in the clay and shared what they discovered. Maybe one day someone will actually discover a real fossil.

―COLORS‖ By: Kamila Wrobel,Room 214 – 4th
Oh, colors, they‘re everywhere
They‘re there and here
And here and there.
When I see a color, I think of this:
―Oh, how wonderful this is!‖
Colors are something of art,
Without colors there would be no art.
Colors, colors, my favorite thing,
I like blue and I like green.

214 CONTINUES LETTER-WRITING TO SOLDIERS: SPOTLIGHT ON CPT. JASON ROSE Captain Jason Rose is a soldier that is stationed in Basra, Iraq.
We have been writing to him for the past 3 months now. He is in charge of training the Iraqi soldiers and police. We sent him a care
package with items that he needed, including some toy police cars that he will use to explain maneuvers to the Iraqis who don‘t
speak English. He also works with local spies to find and arrest the ‗bad guys‘ in the area. One interesting thing we learned about
him is that he‘s a great artist! His first letter to us is full of cool drawings. You can see a copy of his letter, read about other things
he‘s doing, and see some pictures of what he‘s up to in Iraq on the north stairwell. Check it out!

SPRING By: Lluvitza Alvarez, Room 214-4th
Spring!
Such a wonderful time of year.
When flowers start growing
And there‘s lots of warm weather
Spring!
The time of year when kids can go out
And have fun with friends and family
Those beautiful chirping sounds
That birds make!
And people get to enjoy all those beautiful butterflies.
Spring is when kids can go skateboarding and rollerskating.
I can‘t wait until spring gets here!
MENDING BROKEN HEARTS
For Valentine‘s Day our teacher gave us a puzzle heart project to do. We had to work together in groups. Each person in
each group was given a white heart. Each group was also given a red, pink, light purple, and dark purple heart. It was a challenge be-
cause one person made four cuts through the colored hearts. The object of the project was for each person in the group to get one of
each shape and one of each color. The pieces were then glued onto the white heart. Everyone worked really hard on it. It was really
fun too. By: Kelly Tarasiewicz
Book Reviews by 003 Diary of a Wimpy Kid
Diary of a Wimpy Kid is a wonderful book that everyone should read and I‘ll tell you why. You should read this book because in this
book the main character who is Greg is bullied because he has a book that is a ―Diary.‖ You should also read it because what happens to this
guy in the book might actually happen to someone in real life.
If someone bullies you, you should tell an adult. This is why you should read this book. It is also good and popular.
By, Jonathan Mejia
Little House on the Prairie
A great book that you can read is Little House on the Prairie by Laura Ingalls Wilder. I like this book because it makes me feel very happy
when I read it.
Laura is the author and she has two sisters, Mary and Baby Carrie. They also have a bulldog named Jack that follows them everywhere.
Her parents are Charles and Caroline.
In the story, they leave their little house in the big woods of Wisconsin and go to the prairie. They work very hard to make their new little
house. You should read it because it is very exciting and it makes you want to go inside the book. By Alma Carmona
Pepita Talks Twice
Pepita Talks Twice is a good book for everyone to read. The problem faced by the main character Pepita is that she speaks Spanish and
English and she always has to translate for everyone. She gets tired of helping all the time when she just wants to go home and play with her
dog.
My favorite part of the story is when she saves Lobo from running into the street and getting hurt. Pepita realizes that speaking two lan-
guages is a good thing. By, Myah Gonza
Nate the Great San Francisco Detective
There is a good book that I think you should read. It is called Nate the Great, San Francisco Detective. I think you should read it and this
is why.
First of all, Nate is a detective. He goes to San Francisco to visit his cousin. His cousin‘s name is Olivia Sharp and she is also a detective.
They drive up and down many hills. Olivia‘s chauffer drive Nate and his dog, Sludge, to Olivia‘s house. Then they get calls from his buddies
for help. There is more that happens, but I want you to read it. IT IS A VERY GOOD BOOK! By, Agape Alfaro

Paragraph Essays
Over the past month we‘ve been working on a few
essays. Two of these essays we completed are the ―Peanut
Butter Jelly Time!‖ and the ―Family Camping Trip‖. These
are expository essays in which we explained how to make a
peanut butter and jelly sandwich and why we had a great
family camping trip. We learned how to peer edit and wrote
our essays in cursive. Step into Room 202 or 203 to read our
essays… On display now!

How-To Essays In Room 202, we have been working on how-to essays in Writer’s Workshop. A
how-to essay explains in detail how to do a specific task, it will explain how to do or
make something. Each person in our class has picked a topic. We made peanut butter
and jelly sandwiches in class for an example of a how-to essay. Now we are working on
our how-to essays. Some of the topics are: how to make a chocolate-covered birthday
cake, how to point guard, how to meditate, and how to make Arabic rice. So, how do you
think our essays will turn out? By Aman Haidari, Room 202
Role Models The fifth graders are preparing for ISAT’s in March. So, we have been practicing everyday since the
middle of February until now. We are learning expository writing. One of the prompts was: Who is your role model? My role model was my sister. Who is your role model? We had to write a 5 paragraph paper with a body, introduction and conclusion. The body included 3 paragraphs, each with a reason and following details. The introduction includes the topic and grabs the reader’s attention. The conclusion sums up the whole paper in an interesting way. Expository writing is an awesome way for expressing your feelings. -Rozan Deeb 202
6th Grade Presidential Project For the 6th grade presidential project there were a lot of fantastic projects. My project was on Martin
Van Buren which was our 8th president. Martin was born in 1782 and was the son of a New York tavern keeper
and a farmer. As a young man Martin was a lawyer and became interested in politics. In 1833, he was elected
as vice president for Benjamin Franklin. In 1837, Martin became president of the United States of America. He
was only president for one term and died in 1862. By: Piotr Lesniak, Room 207

Seventh and Eighth Grade News 7TH GRADE DISSECTION
BY JAILENE RODRIGUEZ, ROOM 212
In science class we dissected a kidney and a heart. The heart was as big as my fist. When we opened
the heart, we found that the left side of the heart is bigger then the right. You could also see how the vessels
the blood travels in out of. I thought the heart was really cool because you get to see how a heart works, how
big it is, and how it looks inside.
The kidney, I think was amazing. Most of the student had medium sized ones, I got a big one. It has red
and blue nephrons everywhere. It also had tube that was outside of the kidney. Inside the kidney was also wet.
I thought the kidney was amazing because of all the nephrons, see the inside of the kidney really helped under-
stand how it functioned.
I feel the dissection really helped me and everyone else understand how the kidney and heart worked. It
also gave me a good experience where I learned how to use dissection tools properly and safely and had fun
doing it.
More Fifth and Sixth Grade News A Musical at Portage Theatre
Well, we took a wonderful field trip to the Portage Theatre to see a musical that celebrates the Black
American heritage and tradition and other wonderful important things, we had a lot of fun I wish it was longer
because it was a little short but out of that time we learned a lot. The people who were talking to us were won-
derful and funny. I had a lot of fun my favorite part was when they made us sing along with them it was fun.
And the important part is that I came out there learning new things

Black History Month Biography! Do you know what month it is? Of course it is February, but it is also Black History Month. This is a time when we honor great African- American people, and our classes (207, 209, and 211) are doing their part by researching an African- American. We had to choose an African- American and do a poster about them. Personally I enjoyed doing this project. I got to do an inventor Lonnie Johnson. Lonnie Johnson invented the Super Soaker water gun; well that’s what he is best known for. He was also part of the U.S air force and he did space craft design. I absolutely adore the presen-tations. Every person did a wonderful job researching their African- American. I can tell our teacher Mrs. Bowen is proud of our projects. So remember our wonderful African-American people, they deserve it! ROZAN’S BOOK CORNER
This is a very good book called When Marian Sang by Pam Munoz. It’s about a girl that has a
very good voice and she is African-American. Her name is Marian. During her time, America
had segregation, which means that black and white people had to be separated when she sang
for them. The only place she could sing for both black and white people together was in Eu-
rope. From this book I learned that who cares what your skin color is? You should always fol-
low your dreams. If you want to find out more, read this book!

IN AND AROUND BRIDGE SCHOOL
This month, the kindergarteners are working on St. Patrick’s Day projects and losing their ba-
by teeth! The 5th graders are practicing for the ISAT test and working on Black History pro-
jects and soon, Women’s History projects. The 6th graders are studying the Greek Olympics,
anticipating the arrival of Mrs. Loxas’ baby on August 3rd, happy about Mrs. Bowen’s new terri-
er named Wiley, and cheering on Mrs. Green in her first amateur boxing match!
MAKE SURE TO CHEER ON THE BRIDGE SCHOOL TEACHERS WHO WILL BE PARTICIPAT-
ING IN THE CHICAGO CLIMB CHALLENGE 4 TOWERS! They will be climbing 45 flights of
stairs in each tower to help raise money for lung cancer. Good luck to Mrs. Green, Ms. Gilana,

The Grammy Awards
Hey! Have you ever heard about the Grammy Awards? It’s about famous singers that are giv-
en awards about their best records. If you have ever seen or heard of it, who did you think
was going to win? Can you believe the Grammy Awards happen only once every year, and it’s
been here for half a century? That is so cool! The Grammy Awards took place on Sunday, Feb-
ruary 8, 2009. Who was your favorite singer or performer? Did you think he or she would
have won?

Women’s History Month – Harriet Tubman
Harriet Tubman was born in 1820 in Dorchester County, Maryland. Harriet Tubman’s name at
birth was Araminta Ross. She was one of 11 children. When a young man started to run away,
the overseer of the store picked up an iron weight and threw it at the young man. Instead, he
hit Harriet. This nearly crushed her skull, and she suffered from seizures for the rest of her
life. Harriet Tubman died on March 10, 1913 in Auburn, New York.

Bridge Art-i-facts
Generous Donation: Earlier this month Kevin Monaghan, an Engi-
neer from Lane Tech High School, and his team were getting rid of art
supplies in storage at the High School. Instead of throwing it all away,
the engineers helped load over 1000 pounds of art supplies into cars,
which staff members then drove to Bridge School. Some of the sup-
plies included; a huge assortment of paper, mat board, tissue paper, oil
pastels, fabric, yarn, and much more. Students at Bridge decorated and
signed a large card for Kevin Monaghan and the other engineers at
Lane Tech School, which was delivered to them 3 weeks ago.
Kindergarten: Preparing for the Unity Assembly on March 19th, Kin-
dergarteners are creating hand print decorations to hang up in the Audi-
torium. We have been working on tracing, outlining, cutting and glu-
ing.
1st-3rd Grades: Also making beautiful decorations for our Unity As-
sembly, these grades have been working on a month long collage pro-
ject. This group project involves students taking turns each week to
create a life size collage out of magazine and paper scraps. Students
are learning the difference between different shades and hue of color.
4th-6th Grades: Are putting the final touches on their Animal Sym-
bolism Totem Poles. Students have been working hard during these
past 4 weeks drawing, coloring, and sculpting with paper. The fin-
ished products will be up on display during the next few weeks!

NEW ART CONTESTS UP IN THE AUDITORIUM! CHECK THEM OUT!
Reminder: Students as you know, art projects take so much time and effort. When we put these projects up
for display, remember to Look with your eyes, but do not touch with your hands. As cool and interesting as a
project seems, we should not touch them. Some projects are very fragile and delicate. Touching them with
our hands could knock them over, and might break a piece off, which might not be able to be fixed.
Thank you for understanding and respecting your classmates work,
