A MESSAGE FROM DIRECTOR OF ATHLETICS

BOO CORRIGAN

ODIA MissionTo provide an extraordinary Division I athletic experience that develops leaders of character committed to the values of Duty, Honor, Country.

ODIA Goals• Recruit and develop scholar-athletes who lead the Corps• Compete and win at the highest level• Beat Navy and Air Force• Provide the resources (personnel, funding, and facilities) to support athletic excellence• Be a positive strategic communicator for ODIA, USMA, and the Army• Adhere to department of the Army, NCAA, conference, and Academy rules, regulations, and policies• Affect changes in legislation, policy, and regulations that improve performance

Dear Friends,

It is my distinct honor to present this year’s annual report which documents our many success stories from the 2014-15 season. It was another great year as our cadets, coaches and staff proved their commitment to winning the right way and competing at the highest level while pursuing our mission of developing leaders of character that are committed to the values of Duty, Honor, Country.

As a program, we celebrated four teams that earned conference regular season or tournament titles, one team that advanced to the NCAA Championships and four individuals who qualified for NCAA competition. Our cadets continued to prove they can be competitive with their peers while also excelling in the unique academic and military requirements at West Point.

Our 2015 seniors set a high standard for our athletics program, as the Army West Point Class of 2015 graduated with a combined winning percentage of .556, marking the Academy’s highest four-year winning percentage since the Class of 1995 finished with a .557 winning percentage.

A number of our cadet-athletes were highly involved in the Corps of Cadets, with several firsties serving key leadership positions. Men’s soccer goalkeeper Winston Boldt held the Deputy Brigade Commander position. Women’s basketball’s Jordan Elliott served as the Brigade S1, while Joe Drummond and Larry Dixon served as the head of the Brigade Student-Athlete Advisory Committee and the Brigade Physical Development Officer positions, respectively.

We also had another great season in the classroom. Three of our cadet-athletes captured their conference’s Scholar-Athlete of the Year honor, while women’s swimming & diving star Kristen Barta and women’s cross country and track & field standout Lisa Junta represented Army West Point on Academic All-America teams.

Our coaches were also recognized for their leadership ability. Head gymnastics coach Doug Van Everen was one of five Army West Point coaches to claim a conference Coach of the Year honor, as he was selected as the ECAC Gymnastics Coach of the Year and the NCAA Honor Coach of the Year. Joining Van Everen with coaching honors were gymnastics assistants Carmine Giglio and Carl Schrade -- who each earned ECAC Gymnastics Assistant Coach of the Year accolades -- Mike Mahan, Rugby East Coach of the Year, and Rick Johnson, who garnered Collegiate Rifle Coaches Association Coach of the Year praise.

We also partnered with Nike to complete a successful rebranding initiative this spring that we are very excited about moving into the future. We believe our new brand identity accurately reflects the history of this exceptional institution and showcases the unique values our Academy has to offer and ties into our past.

The A Club, for the fourth consecutive year, set a record for donations. We thank all of our donors who continue to answer the call when we ask. Your commitment allows our cadet-athletes to focus on their goals.

To find out more about the Army West Point A Club and how you can enhance the cadet-athlete experience, visit GoArmyWestPoint.com/aclub, call (845) 938-2322, or email [email protected]. Thank you again for all of your support of Army West Point Athletics.

BARTA NAMED TO ACADEMIC ALL-AMERICA TEAMSenior swimmer Kristen Barta earned selection to the Capital One Academic All-America At-Large third

team.

The recognition marked Barta’s second consecutive All-America nod and she be-came the first in Army West Point swim-ming and diving history to receive the dis-tinction multiple times.

Barta, who hails from Oconomowoc, Wis., was named to the Academic All-District squad in mid May and earned All-Patriot League honors for the third time in her ca-reer in February. She has also earned Patri-ot League Academic Honor Roll accolades during all four years.

Since her freshman year, Barta has been named to the Dean’s List and for every eli-gible semester she has been named a Dis-tinguished Cadet. This past fall, she earned the Superintendent’s Award which is grant-ed to the top five percent of the class.

At the 2015 Patriot League Champion-ships, Barta clocked a career-best time in the 200 IM. She placed 10th with a time of 2:06.04 moving her to the No. 9 posi-tion on Army’s All-Time Top 10 times list. In total, Barta ranks in the Top 10 list for four different events including the 200 IM (No. 9), 200 free (No. 5), 500 free (No. 9) and in the 200 breast (No. 2).

JUNTA EARNS ACADEMIC ALL-AMERICA HONORSLisa Junta was named to the Women’s Track & Field/Cross Country Capi-

tal One Academic All-America third team.

The Springfield, Va., native graduated from the Academy in May with a 4.14 cu-mulative grade point average as a Life Sci-ence major. She will attend Mayo Medical School in the fall.

This is the final of a plethora of academic honors for Junta, who was named to the Academic All-Patriot League for track and field and cross country and landed on the Patriot League Academic Honor Roll for both sports.

In 2013, she was named to the CoSIDA Ac-ademic All-District first team and has twice been named to the United States Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Associa-tion (USTFCCCA) All-Academic team.

She holds the Army West Point indoor track & field record in the 5000m run with a time of 16:31.03, checking in at No. 2 in the in-door mile run and indoor 3000m run. She’s also found her way into the record book in three events in outdoor competition.

DRUMMOND ANDRICCIARDIGARNER ACADEMIC ALL-DISTRICT PRAISEArmy West Point linebacker

Stephen Ricciardi and de-fensive lineman Joe Drummond were named to the Capital One Academic All-District football first team.

seAsoN HigHligHts► The Army West Point baseball team finished the 2015 campaign with a 21-26 overall record and went 6-14 in Patriot League play. The team produced two historical wins in 2015, both spearheaded by the pitching of firstie Alex Robinett.► Robinett produced the fifth no-hitter in Academy history when he blanked Longwood in a 1-0 victory for the Black Knights. The right-hander struck out 10 Longwood hitters over his nine shutout innings and became the first Army West Point no-hitter since Logan Lee accomplished the feat on April 21, 2012 against Bucknell.► The early season no-hitter for Robinett was per-haps as equally as impressive as his performance in the team’s final series of the year against Air Force. The team played its most complete game of the sea-son in an 8-0 win over the Falcons in the first meeting between the service academy rivals at West Point. Robinett struck out an Academy record 21 hitters and limited Air Force to three hits in the contest. He fanned at least two hitters in every inning and struck out the final five Air Force hitters to shatter the previ-ous record of 17. His 21 strikeouts were the most in a NCAA Division I game since Steven Strasburg struck out 23 for San Diego State in 2008.

ARMY ATHLETIC ASSOCIATION AWARDBOLDT & TAYLOR EARN 2015 ARMY ATHLETIC ASSOCIATION AWARD

Army West Point men’s soccer standout Winston Boldt and women’s tennis star Elle Taylor were recipients of the Academy’s highest athletic honor when they were presented with the Army Athletic Association Award during the annual Awards Convocation at Eisenhower Hall. The trophy is awarded annually to the male and female cadet-athletes who display the “most valuable ser-vice to intercollegiate athletics dur-ing a career as a cadet.” This year marks the 111th anniver-sary of the AAA Award, which was first presented to football player Horatio Hackett in 1904. Boldt becomes the fourth men’s soccer player to draw the honor and the first since Dan Scioletti received

it in 1971. Taylor is the third member of the women’s tennis program to land the award and becomes the first since Marissa Limsiaco in 2005. A native of St. Louis, Mo., Boldt is set to graduate as one of the top men’s soccer goalkeepers in Academy history. He stands atop the leader board in a number of team goalkeeping records to include career shutouts (24), sin-gle season shutouts (12) and career saves (249). A team captain during his junior and senior campaigns, Boldt earned National Soccer Coaches Association of America (NSCAA) Division I All-America second team and Capital One Academic All-America second team honors in 2013. He became the first Army West Point men’s soccer player to garner both awards during the same season. Boldt established a program record with 12 shutouts as a junior and helped lead the Black Knights to their first Patriot League Tournament appearance since 1996. His 12 clean sheets tied for second nationally at the end of the season, while his save percentage of .888 ranked third and his .521 goals against average stood fifth. The 2013 squad concluded the season with a 12-3-3 overall record, tying for the second-most victories in team history. Along with his All-America honors, Boldt capped his junior season as the Patriot League Goalkeeper of the Year, Men’s Soccer Scholar-Athlete of the Year and was named to the conference’s All-Tournament Team. A three-time Academic All-Patriot League honoree and a three-time selection to Top Drawer Soccer’s National Team of the Week, Boldt earned preseason recognition heading into his senior season, as he was named a Se-

nior CLASS Award finalist and was selected to the MAC Hermann Trophy Watch List as one of the top players in the nation. Boldt registered eight shutouts in 2014 to rank fourth on Army West Point’s single-season list and passed Lucas Rice (USMA ‘93) for first in the team’s career shutouts rankings with a two-save effort during a 1-0 overtime win at Binghamton. Boldt earned his second Patriot League Goalkeeper of the Year honor following the regular season before stop-ping five shots in the league quarterfinals at third-seeded American, helping Army West Point prevail for a 4-3 win in the ensuing penalty kick shootout. The Black Knights advanced to the league semifinals, where Boldt made a career-high 10 saves in an eventual double-overtime set-back to regular-season champion Boston University. Aside from his role on the soccer team, Boldt serves as the Deputy Brigade Commander, which ranks second in the Corps of Cadets, under the First Captain. He is an International Relations and Portuguese major with a cu-mulative grade point average of 3.436. Taylor, who hails from Redondo Beach, Calif., graduates among the greats in the Army West Point women’s ten-nis record book. Taylor accumulated 152 career victories, with 92 of those coming from doubles and 60 in singles. She ranks third in career doubles wins after winning 26 matches in her senior season to total 92. During her senior campaign, Taylor was named the team co-captain and earned Academic All-Patriot League honors. She boasted 35 victories, 26 in doubles and nine in singles, to secure her spot in the record books. As a junior, Taylor tied her single-season doubles record with 27. She authored a 27-11 mark in doubles and went 25-10 in singles to help the Black Knights reach the Pa-triot League Championship match for the third consecu-tive year. In her sophomore and rookie seasons, Taylor took on a larger role than the other freshmen on the team. She was consistently in the lineup at both singles and doubles, in-cluding when the Black Knights won two Patriot League Championship titles over Navy and earned back-to-back NCAA appearances. During the 2012-13 season, Taylor coasted through conference play with a 5-0 mark and led the team to a win over Navy and a Patriot League title. In singles, Tay-lor went 3-0 in conference contests with 13 total singles wins. As a freshman, Taylor jumped into the record books with 27 single-season doubles wins alongside her older sister and teammate, Della Taylor. Elle boasted 27 dou-

bles wins at the No. 1 flight and 18 singles victories as a rookie. She was part of the team that defeated Navy in the conference title match and played in the NCAA Tournament. Taylor ranked second on the squad in total wins with 45 as a freshman and closed-out the year with an unbeaten singles streak of nine matches. Outside of tennis, Taylor was a part of the Officers’ Christian Fellowship her freshman and sophomore years. She is a member of Phi Sigma Iota, the Foreign Language Honor Society, and was the recipient of the Spanish Lan-guage Scroll Award. Taylor has also volunteered at Arthur Ashe Kids Day at the U.S. Open for the past four years. Taylor is a Systems Engineering major with a cumula-tive grade point average of 3.547. She has been on the Dean’s List since her freshman year and will graduate with honors.

ARMY WEST POINT BRAND IDENTITYARMY WEST POINT ATHLETICS REVEALS NEW BRAND IDENTITY

Army West Point Athletics and Nike collaborated on an 18-month brand evolution program to enhance and perfect upon the celebrated marks of the United States Military Academy, honoring the duty, leadership and rich history of academics and athletics, key characteristics and attributes associated with the Academy. With the goal of engaging new cadets, faculty and staff as well as building upon its remarkable reputation as America’s Academy, developing a seamless and consistent athletic identity is paramount.

“To separate the Army from West Point is to take away the purpose of the United States Military Academy,” said Lt. Gen. Robert Caslen, Jr., USMA superintendent. “Since its founding in 1802, West Point has produced soldier-scholars and lead-ers of character for America. This innovative new branding respects and elevates the Academy’s history and heritage and reflects the unique qualities of Army West Point Athletics, while tying the service to the Academy.”

Said Army West Point Director of Intercollegiate Athletics Boo Corrigan, “We are very proud to showcase our new athletic marks. When we started this 18-month process, our goal was to better position the Academy nationally with consistent logos, colors, lettering and numerals that tell the story of the Academy and our cadets. It was very important to us that this process was collaborative, which is why we involved a host of constituent groups, including U.S. Army and Academy leadership, current and former cadet-athletes, coaches, historians and West Point graduates. I would personally like to thank the committee that worked directly with Nike in helping to make this process a reality. We believe that we achieved our goal and are excited about the future of Army West Point Athletics.”

In an effort to create consistency across all applications that honors the past while attracting new audiences in an authentic and meaningful way, there will be a brand-new primary logo that pays homage to the Academy and what it stands for. The Athena Shield is indisputably iconic and unique to Army West Point Athletics. It signals a consistent foundation that honors the brand equity that has been built across centuries of service, competition and sacrifice while creating distinction and reinforcing the Army West Point Brand for the next generation. The Athena Shield is comprised of four unique elements (the shield, helmet, sword and star) that come together to represent Army West Point Athletics with power and authenticity.

The primary color palette contains Army Black, USMA Gold, Gray and White. It will serve as the primary palette, used on most brand applications. This is a color palette that is authentic to military history, finishes and materials. These colors represent the future of West Point and the larger Army organization. The primary color palette also draws inspiration from the components of gunpowder, the current Army Combat Uniform (ACU) and the Long Gray Line.

“It’s an incredible opportunity for us to work hand-in-hand with such a storied institution,” said Todd Van Horne, vice president and creative director for Nike Football and Baseball. “The new embellishments are a small token to the service and sacrifice that everyone involved at Army West Point has made for this Country.”

As part of the new program, all 28 of Army West Point Athletics intercollegiate sports teams will showcase consistent logos, colors, lettering and numerals.

While a new primary logo has been established, Army West Point will continue to use Black Knights as a nickname.

Three individual NCAA champions, a three-time National Invitational Tournament participant, league boxing champion, a three-time soccer All-America selection, a West Point graduate who served as team physician, a West Point graduate who served as head football coach and later Superintendent, an offensive lineman that opened holes for two Heisman Trophy winners and won two national championships and the Academy’s first wrestling All-America choice were among the many accolades of the Army Sports Hall of Fame Class of 2014. The 11th induction class into the Army Sports Hall of Fame included rifleman Chris Abalo, football and wrestling standout John Green, women’s swimming national champion Jennifer Grzbek, boxer Donald Hull, men’s basketball star Jim Oxley, wrestling and football letterwinner Al Paulekas, track and field and cross country extraordinaire Bill Straub, men’s soccer’s Tom Tyree, Dr. John Feagin and former Superintendent Gar Davidson. The Class of 2014 brought the total number of inductees to 109 and encompassed eight sports. The announcement of the Army Sports Hall of Fame Class of 2014 marked the end of a lengthy process that began in the spring. A 10-member selection committee, representing athletic administrators, academic administrators, former West Point athletes, graduates and representatives from the Association of Graduates, began the process of developing a workable list from the thousands of athletes, coaches and administrators that have represented the Academy on the “fields of friendly strife.” Only individuals that graduated from or coached at the Academy and those five years removed from their playing and coaching days are eligible. The eligibility requirement has since been changed to a minimum of 15 years after graduation. Once the selection committee finalized its recommended list, the names were forwarded to West Point’s Athletic Committee for review and ratification before being passed on to Superintendent Lt. Gen. Robert Caslen for final approval. The honorees were officially inducted into the Army Sports Hall of Fame on Friday, Oct. 10.
