Welcome Heather Cagle!

We would like to welcome Mrs. Audrey Gravitt to ACA as our fifth grade teacher. She is a native of Forsyth County and a graduate of North Forsyth High School. Mrs. Gravitt received her bachelor’s degree in Early Childhood Education and Special Education with an added reading endorsement from the University of North Georgia. She is very excited for the opportunity to lead and teach our fifth graders.

When Mrs. Gravitt is not at ACA, she and Josh, her husband of two years, enjoy spending time with family and friends. They attend Mt. Tabor Baptist Church in Forsyth County, where her parents are part of a gospel band that plays both there and at area churches. Not surprisingly, having grown up with music in her home, Mrs. Gravitt loves country and southern gospel

music and occasionally sings with her mother. She also enjoys reading and the beach and was excited to visit the Bahamas this summer. In the future, she hopes to travel more, swim with the dolphins, and scrapbook.

We are fortunate to have Heather Cagle teaching our twos this year. Although this is her first year teaching at ACA, she is an experienced teacher. After graduating from theUniversity of Georgia, Heather taught at Dolvin Elementary for seven years in first grade and P.E. When her second child was born, she left teaching to stay home with her children. Now Heather says, "I am refreshed, renewed and thrilled to be not only back with my true passion teaching, but at ACA where I can also teach about my Lord and Savior Jesus Christ!" Heather is a fourth generation Alpharetta native and has been a member of FBCA her entire life, following the example of her parents and grandparents. She and her husband Wesley have four children, Adi Brooke, age 12, Caleb, age 9, Mary, age 8, and Crew, age 4. Heather and her family love to spend their spare time outdoors camping, fishing, and hiking! She and her husband are currently working on mapping and hiking the Appalachian Trail. When she has spare time, you may not find her, because she will be "lost" in the woods. If they miss a camping opportunity, it will probably be for a Dawg's game.

Welcome, Mrs. Gravitt!

ACA Staff Accepts Ice Bucket ChallengeIn the first family chapel, several ACA students challenged their teachers to an Ice Bucket Challenge. To make the event more fun, students were able to vote for their teachers with dollars. At the end of one week, the elementary students had raised $550 for ALS. Even though Pastor Taylor Teel received the most votes, all teachers on the ballot received an icy dunking during chapel time.

Thank you to the families who came out to Wills Park to the Family Picnic fortransitional kindergarten through fifth grade. It was enjoyable for everyone to both see old friends and to get to know new ones. Let’s give a special thank you to Jocelyne for planning this event and to Michele and her husband for cooking!

First Grade Students Go Back In Time At Stone MountainThe first graders traveled to Stone Mountain where they toured the Plantation and learned about pioneer and antebellum life. They enjoyed demonstrations in cooking and weaving by docents in period costume. The students felt wool and cotton and learned how it was brushed, spun, and dyed to make yarn, which was later woven into fabric. Of course, they greeted the barnyard animals enthusiastically, not only petting goats, sheep, and pigs, but also learning about old tools such as a candle maker, iron, and foot warmer. After touring the garden and observing vegetables, fruit, and cotton, they entered the cook house to see how to cook over a fire in the fireplace. Children in those days had to wait twenty minutes for one waffle or cookie to bake. Everyone was interested in the one room schoolhouse, which had benches rather than desks and a pot belly stove to warm the school during the winter. The finale was the train trip around the mountain. Mrs. Troke said, “It was a fabulous field trip that reinforced our unit in Social Studies about life from long ago.”
