Conference in San Diego
can keep gay people out The second difficulty is in unders tanding that they cant be the only solution to all its members problems though it doesn t
w AC I~ y Newslefler ofthe international Advisory Council for Homosexual lo-Ien and WOIIen in Alcoholics Al1olyllou~
The Fifth Tradition Each group has but one primary purpose -- (0 carry its message to the alcoholic who still suff ers
n our discussions of e Traditions so far shy
we have discovered that the groups welshy
fare is more important than OUI
own egos that we can trust an informed group conscience noshybody will throw us out of AA ifwe want to get sober and that groups can all be different T hese are the foundations of freedom that AA groups are built on
Groups assume responsishybility for these freedoms A group that tries to be everything to everyshybody will quickly lose its effectiveshyness in the one area that really matshyters the ability to help people stay ober Group members have a reshy
sponsibility to pass on the message of recovery to newcomers Recovshyery from alcoholism must be the primary purpo se of every AA group no m atter how impor tant anoth er issue might seem to its members
lACs place in the service structure can be of help to newly for ming special purpose groups We are called on often to share our comshymon experience with new groups The most common hurdle for a new group to overcome is the discovery that it cant restrict membership to homosexshyuals any more than a straight group
take very long to realize the imporshytance of sticking to the primary messhysage of recovery fro m alcoholism T he ultimate test of whether or not a group is living the Traditions is if members are staying sober and new ones are getting sober
hat message does my group carry D oes my group state its message clearly Or does a confused newcomer think hes in group therapy Does the special purpose of carrying the messhysage of recovery to gay people ever get confused with other personal or socishyetal interests of members D oes my group teach members to chair meetshyings effectively by choosing a topic about recovery and leading the discusshysion Or do meetings simply happen by waiting for volunteers or tagging members Do I share my recovery from alcoholism or do I relate todays anecdo tes at length Do I sponsor people and make twelfth step calls D o I take responsibility for upholding the primary purpose of my group
