Arts & Crafts rusticity and Edward-ian Classicism were parallel trends inthe early 20th century interior. It wasespecially common in the AmericanFoursquare to see Craftsman-stylebox beams, inglenooks and highwooden wainscots juxtaposed with Co-lonial Revival-style classi cal columns, cornices and Palladian windows.

In general, rooms of the period ex-pressed a horizontal emphasis, in contrastto the vertical thrust of the preceding Vic-torian era. Gone was the standard Victo-rian 18" frieze, replaced by a broad varietyof frieze heights and decorative treatments.High wooden wainscots, often inset with

vertical panels, became a characteristicfeature of dining rooms.

Panelization could be found bothon walls and in broad frieze areas. Insimple interiors that lacked elaboratewoodwork, paper borders and panelswere some time s used to crea te thepopular wall divisions of the period.

Box beams became a popular c eilingtreatment, and all-over ceiling papers, such as faux gilded burlap and micageometrics, maintained popularity. The elaborate ornamental ceilings ofthe previous century, however, virtuallydisappeared from the domestic interior, replaced with far simpler treatments.

Bottom left:It was common to use a large scale oral pattern, such as Briar Rose above awainscot. Right:The vertical nature ofThistlemakes it ideal for use in vertical panels. Note:in both cases, large orals are balanced by a small scale geometric,Avalon.

Top left:Apple Tree Frieze is extended in height by the use ofApple Tree Border top andbottom. Border and corner blocks are used to panelize the wall. Right:The frieze area is pan-elized; the width between panels determined by the box beams above. Below the picture rail

Apple Tree Friezehas been decoupaged over Glenwoodwallpaper with a companion borderabove the wainscot. This wall combination may be adapted for use in large frieze areas.

Ceilings shimmer in low level lightThe low intensity of early light bulbs guaranteed the popularity of reective ceilin

electried homes. Left:Brilliantly reective mica (Circlet Ceiling) was used to l ighten ceThe ceiling might be framed with narrow borders, sometimes with elaborated corners. The gilded Faux Burlap Ceilingprovided the ultimate in richness; combined with Tiffanlighting the effect was ethereal. Borders were used to enrich the panels created by box b

The combination of restrained Art Nouveau motifs and Classically-inspired symmwas typical of the Edwardian style. Striped wallpapers were popular in both EdwardiaColonial Revival interiors. Above:Below the picture rail, Glasgow Panels are hung corners of a wall covered with Springfeld Stripe wallpaper, and bounded byVienna CBorder. Above the picture rail, Glasgow Frieze is panelized at the corners to reect thpanels, and oated on a background ofAvalon to ll a wide frieze area.

    Hanging tip: Creatingthe hand-stencilled look.

Stencilled friezes usually are centered oneach wall, as the distance between each sten-cil can be subtly adjusted. This effect canbe duplicated using either Oakleaf Friezeor Glasgow Frieze by cutting out t he areasoutside the oak leaves (or rose bushes)and pasting them back as extenders at thecorners of the room.

Above:Oakleaf Frieze oats, stencil-like, on a plain background and ts friezes from 16" to 27". May beextended with the use of its companion border.
