PART OF THE LARTE PROJECT, showcasing modern,
contemporary Italian hospitality and community experience,
served alongside art, fashion and design – the new venue is
a combination that is truly unique to the Abu Dhabi dining and
social scene.
Located in the capital’s flourishing Cultural District, Manarat al
Saadiyat, LARTE Abu Dhabi is a joint venture between LARTE
Milan and Roya Hospitality. The licensed restaurant offers an
all-day dining experience combining a counter service ‘caffé’;
stylish, marble bar ‘trattoria’ and large outdoor terrace. While
the creative community garden and adjoining pavilion, presents
a relaxed vibe and light-filled canvas for social events. Living
by the philosophy of ‘bello, buono e ben fatto’, meaning ‘the
beautiful, the good and the well-made’, the concept is a model
example of simple, honest Italian excellence and hospitality.
Guests will enjoy traditional Italian cuisine with a creative twist.
Italian head Chef Lorenzo Pagliaro and his team have carefully
selected only the finest flavours for their innovations. The team
source ingredients directly from Italy as well as locally with a
Benvenuto al LARTE
tradition of daily visits to the Abu Dhabi fish market.
Open for breakfast, lunch and dinner, signature dishes set to
become fast favourites comprise saffron and lobster arancini,
stone bass carpaccio, oven baked ziti and eggplant parmigiana.
Throughout the day, a fresh ‘caffé’ deli display offers a variety
of salads; sandwiches and antipasti that can be conveniently
ordered for take out or dine in, alongside world-class coffee
from Illy, and cakes, pastries and desserts.
The ‘trattoria’ marble bar area features an extensive grape list
including many well-known Italian labels. The Terrace with
its lush green lawns and tranquil corners makes the perfect
backdrop for yoga and meditation classes, which will be
hosted regularly during the cooler winter months. ✤

From One Louvre to Another: Opening a Museum for Everyone
Louvre Abu Dhabi’s first special exhibition, From One Louvre
to Another: Opening a Museum for Everyone, is now open
to the public and will run until April 7. The exhibition traces
the history of France’s Musée du Louvre in the 18th century
through 150 paintings, sculptures, decorative arts and other
works of art from the world-renowned collections of the
Musée du Louvre and the Château de Versailles.
From One Louvre to Another: Opening a Museum for Everyone
tells the story of the creation of the Musée du Louvre two
centuries ago, when Europe’s first museums were founded to
share access to magnificent royal collections with the public.
Divided into three sections, the exhibition explores the royal
collections at Versailles under Louis XIV, the Louvre as a palace
for artists, and the creation of the Musée du Louvre.
Co-Lab: Contemporary Art and Savoir-faire
Co-Lab: Contemporary Art and Savoir-faire, is a unique exhibition
of four contemporary works of art created by UAE-based artists
in collaboration with premium French manufacturers. The
exhibition will be on display until 25 March 2018 in the museum’s
Forum. Co-Lab is part of the Emirati-French Cultural Programme:
Dialogue with Louvre Abu Dhabi, an initiative established by the
Department of Culture and Tourism – Abu Dhabi and France’s
Ministry of Europe and Foreign Affairs, Ministry of Culture and the
Institut Français. Conceived and produced jointly by the Emirati
and French authorities, the Emirati-French Cultural Programme -
in dialogue with Louvre Abu Dhabi - fully embraces the creative
momentum set in motion by the creation of the museum.
The artworks on display in this exhibition combine the artists’
creativity and artistic vision with the technique and know-how
of the French manufacturers. The four artistic projects revolve
around the central theme of ‘Time’. Each artist expressed this
theme using different approaches and materials. ✤

LEONARDO DA VINCI’S SALVATOR MUNDI
Abu Dhabi’s Department of Culture and Tourism has acquired Leonardo da Vinci’s masterpiece Salvator Mundi. The work, hailed as one of the greatest artistic rediscoveries of the last 100 years, will go on display at Louvre Abu Dhabi, alongside another da Vinci masterpiece, La Belle Ferronnière, which is currently on loan
from musée du Louvre. Painted by one of history’s greatest and most renowned artists, Salvator Mundi is one of fewer than 20 known surviving paintings by the Italian Renaissance master. Dating from around 1500, it is an oil on panel painting depicting a half-length figure of Christ as Saviour of the World, facing the viewer, and dressed in flowing robes of lapis and crimson. The figure holds a crystal orb in his left hand as he raises his right hand in benediction.

HELLO, SRI LANKA
Bursting through the cloud cover above the teardrop-shaped island of Sri Lanka we’re greeted with a landscape of verdant green, where tangled jungle hugs up against long stretches of untouched coastline bashed by the incessant momentum of ocean waves. We touch down in Colombo during the worst cyclone to hit the country for many years, yet this tropical downpour marks a refreshing change from the desert climate of the UAE we’ve become accustomed too. As tuk-tuks weave between heavy traffic, Buddhist stupas and waterlogged roads it feels a world away from the ‘bubble’ we’re used to.
THE TEA TRAILSOur first stop is Sri Lanka’s central highlands affectionately referred to as ‘tea country.’ We board a small amphibian aircraft from Colombo’s domestic terminal which once formed part of the original route between London and Sydney. Traveling skywards away from the capital, we head inland towards the conical shaped topography of Adam’s Peak, before landing on the emerald-coloured waters of Castlereagh Lake. The seaplane journey with Cinnamon Air (approximately $600
one way) provides a memorable 25-minute experience, combining a spectacular vantage point and the excitement of landing on water, a sensible option when compared to a four-hour journey by road.Described as ‘the benchmark for boutique’ our first stop is Tea Trails, the world’s first tea bungalow resort which offers five beautifully restored planters bungalows in distinct colonial style. Ascending the gentle hillside away from the lake, we pass eucalyptus trees and dancing butterflies as the early morning mist dissipates over a tranquil infinity swimming pool. Manicured gardens surround the impeccable bungalows complete with sarong-clad private butlers
grandiose due to spacious outside terraces, while Dunkeld presents a honeymooners delight with an outdoor jacuzzi, but the old-world feel of Norwood had us instantly charmed. Surrounded by tranquil gardens and the maze of tea plantations rising above, our stay at Norwood Bungalow offered an all-inclusive experience with a difference. A four-poster bed and free-standing bath tub take centre stage across the six bedrooms, all of which share communal living and dining areas and a large outdoor pool flanked by bamboo.
Taking to the tea trails themselves is an enchanting experience as dirt paths meander through the tea plants seemingly unsure of the final destination. This is all part of the fun as we encounter school children in perfectly pressed uniforms and tea pluckers in bright coloured saris. Lost in the encroaching cloud cover amongst crumbling churchyards and nothing but the calls of nature, it’s a soul awakening experience and one that’s further enhanced by the property’s lack of television. Instead, we seek solace in fireside tales and the crackle of vinyl on an antique gramophone. With two per cent of Sri Lanka’s landmass covered in tea plants, we learn more about the process during an early morning visit to the Dunkeld Tea Factory, owned and operated by Dilmah who pioneered the concept of single origin tea in 1988 before branching out into the world of hospitality with Resplendent Ceylon.

on hand to take care of your every need. It’s a more personalised service style than we’re used too but one that’s always paired with a friendly smile and the assurance that nothing’s too much trouble. Soaking up the tranquillity of the mountain air and a back-to-nature approach, Tea Trails is more than just a boutique resort. Each of the five bungalows can be found scattered around the waters edge, but many kilometres apart, providing the opportunity for cultural immersion with a distinct luxury touch. Each bungalow has been flawlessly restored, with specially curated furniture that provides a throwback to the colonial summerhouses. Tientsin may be the most

A compact crossover set to redefine its segment with style, practicality and innovative
technology for every metropolitan motorist. FACT takes the all-new Nissan Kicks out
onto the UAE roads for a test drive and here’s the verdict…
When you’re choosing a vehicle to drive in
the UAE, what do you look for? Is it the
exterior design? Or is it interior comfort?
Maybe you like technological features,
or are you all about easy driving?
Whatever it is that you look for in a car, pay attention because
Nissan Middle East wants to give you ALL of this and then
some with the brand new crossover, the Nissan Kicks. Launched
a few months ago into the Middle East market, Nissan has now
ticked more boxes for drivers who want a crossover that combines
innovation and class with style and performance. Let us tell you all
about what makes this model so special…
The Nissan Kicks is solely aimed at urban driving environments –
think everywhere from leafy suburbs to compound communities,
the laid back Abu Dhabi Corniche and even rush hour on Sheikh
Zayed Road. It’s abundant features cater to the UAE driver’s every
motoring need; on the few windy days we drove the car, its robust
exterior was like a guard against the heavy breeze, whilst the car’s
generous ground clearance (200mm) provides an elevated driving
position and a high eye point for excellent all-round visibility -
something that you’ll appreciate at rush hour.
• CITY RIDES
The Nissan Kicks also handles very well – its agile and smooth
maneuverability makes the car a joy to drive (turning something
that can be a stressful task in the UAE, into an enjoyable one).
If you’re all about looks, you should know that this car is VERY
visually appealing. The Kicks features established Nissan design
signatures such as the V-motion grille which dominates the car’s
front end. Also present are the boomerang head and taillights,
and the “floating” coupé-style roof with a wrap-around visor
look to the windscreen and side glass. To put it simply, for us, as
young professionals working between Abu Dhabi and Dubai –
this is definitely a car that is perfect for getting you to important
meetings as well as being the designated ride for an evening out
with friends. The body features an advanced aerodynamic design,
which optimises fuel consumption (we were impressed that a full
tank cost was no more than AED70 dirhams) and minimises noise.
The spacious interior too, is instantly recognisable as a Nissan
design thanks to the gliding wing shape stretching the width
of the dashboard – not to mention, seats are super spacious and
comfortable, especially ideal for those leisurely drives between the
two emirates, or weekend road trips further afield.
The Kicks is packed with features to help the driver in every way.

THE NISSAN
KICKS TARGETS
YOUNG
PEOPLE WHO
ARE EARLY
ADOPTERS OF
FORWARD-
THINKING
TECHNOLOGY...”
“
It’s the first model to utilise the concept
of Nissan Intelligent Mobility which
uses smart, relevant technology to make
the driver’s life easier while also making
advances towards Nissan’s long term goal
of zero emission and zero fatality motoring.
The Nissan Kicks targets young people who
are early adopters of forward-thinking
technology and those who appreciate and
embrace the way it can both simplify urban
driving and connect them more easily to
what matters. In that regard, the Intelligent
Mobility features within the Kicks aim
to reduce stress for drivers through
innovations such as the Around View
Monitor (AVM) and the Moving Object
Detection system (MOD).
Parking is also a breeze; using four cameras,
placed at the front and rear of the car and
in both door mirrors, AVM creates a bird’s
eye 360-degree view of the car which can be
displayed on the central monitor and used as
a parking aid. The cameras automatically get
to work when you shift to R (reverse) mode,
and in places like the UAE where street
parking, general side stops and even tight
spaces in the mall can be difficult to navigate,
having the cameras is a HUGE help.

We’re greeted by a friendly
member of staff who brings
over an impressive menu: it
has been recently revamped
to offer even more enticing
food, including more creative, vibrant and tasty
starters, entrees and mains. There’s something
on this menu for everyone with lots of meat and
fish options along with mouthwatering salads
and pastas for vegetarians too.
It’s a tough decision to make as there are simply
TOO many things that sound good to devour. We
settle on one of the antipasto plates to share
while sipping a refreshing aperitif overlooking
the pool. The antipasto plate is delicious and
gorgeously presented, consisting of different
cured meats, cherry tomatoes, grilled zucchini,
olives and the tastiest bruschetta we’ve had in a
while. This is the perfect dish for sharing and not
too filling – great to begin with if you’re planning
to order a heavy main.
We can’t decide between a pasta and risotto for
the main affair so we get both – when in doubt,
order it all! We savour the crab, rocket and
lemon risotto which is packed full of flavor and
is surprisingly light. This dish is a must try and is
served with a generous amount of crab which we
LOVE. We then choose the spinach and ricotta
ravioli and the lobster spaghettini. Both are
sensational dishes; the first is served with a burnt
butter and sage sauce which complements the
pasta perfectly, whilst the latter is equally good
served with fresh lobster and a shellfish sauce
– ideal for seafood fans. It must be said that this
is some of the best pasta we’ve tasted – fresh
and super light. It’s evident that a lot of care and
attention has gone into reparing the food.
The portions are generous but not too big, and
after our main and entrée we were left feeling
quite full. There are so many tempting dessert
options on the menu but we opt for a scoop of
raspberry sorbet which is presented neatly with
strawberries and white chocolate. The food was
some of the best Italian cuisine we have eaten,
the presentation and service were excellent and
we love the chic décor of this venue too.
Be it a romantic dinner, evening out with friends
or, simply, to fulfil your Italian food cravings –
BiCe will step up to the plate (literally!) and satisfy
your taste buds from starter to dessert, easily. ✤

There’s nothing nicer than
a great spa treatment and
allowing yourself some
well-earned “me time”, but
sometimes you really want
to tap into major concerns – be it muscle
pain, de-stressing or dry skin – the
customised treatments at Remède Spa
are here to save the day. The beautiful
spa is a real sanctuary for guests looking
to unwind in one of the 11 treatment
rooms, the wet area or the relaxation
lounge. Think white marble, elements of
gold and timber and large windows. It’s
a luxurious space that you would expect
from a brand like The St Regis.
I’m trying the Remède Customised
Massage and the Remède Customised
Facial, both 60-minute treatments. After
being greeted warmly and given a cold
refresher towel and welcome drink,
the gorgeous changing room is a sight
for sore eyes. I slip into a robe and go
through to the treatment room which is
super spacious and serenely decorated.
There are three different oils to choose
from for the massage and since my
body is very tight and stiff and I really
need to unwind, it’s the muscle rub oil
that makes the cut. Being a customised
massage, this treatment allows for you
to have your needs really focused on so
you can tell the therapist beforehand
where you want most attention and
what areas are troubling you. I ask for
a deep tissue massage with lymphatic
drainage focusing on the neck,
shoulders and back.
My therapist works hard on the tired
and knotted muscles using stretching
techniques and strong strokes to
thoroughly help me to relax. With
the lymphatic drainage, the therapist
pushed hard on my lymph nodes (such
as underarms) to release the blockages
in my body. A great deal of attention is
paid to the upper back and neck where
there is a lot of deep-seated tension. By
the end of the massage I feel completely
perky and brand new again.
It’s then time for the Remède customised
facial which is personalised to suit
my dry, tired and sensitive skin, using
products from Elemis which feel fresh
and hydrating. The face is triple-cleansed
using a very rich creamy cleanser
and then we move onto exfoliation
using a papaya and pineapple enzyme
scrub which kills dead skin cells. Once
my skin is clean, a light steam using
warm washcloths is done and then
all the nasties are removed from my
pores but the therapist is extra careful
not to unsettle my skin while doing
this. It works especially well and my
complexion is already clearer. This is an
important step to ask for in a facial as
the environment can really dry skin out
and build congestion on your pores. I’m
then given an uplifting facial massage
with a gorgeous serum before a thick
hydrating mask is applied, and while this
is doing its magic, my therapist massages
my arms. To complete the treatment, the
oxygen machine is used on my face and
neck to plump up the skin.
The facial has worked wonders for my
skin, leaving it bright and glowing. I
continue this state of bliss in the relaxation
room with apricot tea looking out over the
Corniche. Having a customised treatment
is a real plus and at Remède Spa you can
expect instant results. ✤

It’s been a long time since I had my first contact with fitness. I started early in my youth practicing Taekwondo, later taking part in
competitions and I was also teaching kids’ classes. The first time I did weight training was when I was 16. I practiced earlier on at home with pull-ups, dips, etc, but my first gym membership was at 16. I had no real clue what I was doing and everything I know I learned more or less by teaching myself through YouTube and my own experience.
You’re quite a unique example of someone who has managed to
build an enviable physique whilst being vegan – that must be a
very disciplined lifestyle, how do you do it?
First of all, I wouldn’t say that I’m quite unique with that. There are lots of other really good athletes on a completely plant-based diet, for example the German strongman Patrik Baboumian or the Bodybuilder Mischa Janiec. It’s no miracle, you have to train hard and eat clean. In my training there’s plenty of variety, I’m trying nearly everything I hear about, so I can decide which fits
At only 21-years-old, Luca Múller has managed to maintain a strict
plant-based diet and a consistent workout regime to keep his fitness
in check – and as desired. Going into the New Year, FACT caught
up with the Abu Dhabi-based personal trainer to bring you some
major health inspo and highlight that just like Luca, it’s totally
possible to achieve your fitness goals. Beast.Mode.On!
EAT CLEAN, TRAIN DIRTY
me the most. It’s bad when you get into a complete routine. You have to get used to eating a lot when you’re eating on a vegan diet, because the calorie density is not that high.
Veganism has become such a huge food trend and way of life
for millions of people – what inspired you to start eating clean?
I was always curious about this diet. Me and some friends tried it out together and everyone of us still follows their plant-based diet. For all of us, it had health benefits we wouldn’t miss anymore. This was three and a half years ago now and I won’t change anything in the future.
What are three foods that you can’t live without, things that
you would recommend people to include in their diet?
I would recommend everyone eating a lot of fruits, especially bananas; on some days I’m eating up to eight. Another food I wouldn’t miss is rice. Even though I know it’s not the healthiest one, I’m in love with basmati rice. However, if anyone would ask me, I would recommend whole meal rice. A big part of my protein intake is based on lentils, so that’s the third food I would mention here.
