NEWs IN BRIEFSB Sculptors Guild is having its International Sculp-ture Day reception April 24 from 2 to 4 pm at the Com-munity Arts Workshop (CAW), 630 Garden Street.

Off the Wall, Santa Barbara Museum of Art Womens Board benefit, April 30th at Junipero Serra Hall, is SOLD OUT!

The Non-profit Art Walk for Kids/Adults, serving artists with disabilities in the Santa Barbara commu-nity for fifteen years (www.artwalkforkids.org, and on Facebook: ArtWalkforKids), had an opening at TV Santa Barbara, 329 S. Salinas Street, on April 14th, 5.30pm to 7.00pm. Two artists were honored, Dion Cherot and Robert Vincent. Through June 31st.

A. Michael Marzolla and eight others participated in a three-day solar plate etching workshop, March 14th to 16th at Mary Ince’s Rusty Barn art studio in Gole-ta. The workshop was led by noted artist Dan Welden (www.danwelden.com). It was a very productive and exciting experience.

Solar plate etching is a process developed by Mr. Welden as a non-hazardous technique for making

prints. The process is not inexpensive. However, it is much safer as it avoids the process of using acids and toxic grounds.

Check out Dan Welden’s workshop schedule on his website (www.danwelden.com/workshops.html). There is also more information about the process on the site, as well as on YouTube (www.youtube.com, search “Dan Welden solar plate printing”).

Beth Schmohr ran a “Dip & Sip” Painting class in the new classroom at Carpinteria Arts Center on Sunday, April 10th, with twelve in attendance. Dates for sum-mer classes will be announced soon. It will be a 3-ses-sion series on abstraction. Information on classes and programs at the Carpinteria Arts Center can be found at www.carpinteriaartscenter.org.

Karen Luckett designed 4 community art projects for visitors to participate in while visiting the SB Sculptors Guild juried art show at the Community Arts Work-shop at 630 Garden Street. They include a “Draw Your Dreams and Demons” canvas among 3 others. Gallery hours: Friday, Saturday, and Sunday, 3 to 6 pm. Show ends on April 24.

Karen Luckett has a photograph, “Lavender Path”, that was chosen from the Pathways show in Carpinteria by Sarah Hinton of Rose Story Farms to be duplicated into a floral design.

Lee Anne Dollison attended a workshop on April 3rd in South Pasadena, put on by the Los Angeles Art As-sociation. There were panel discussions on selling vs. creating art, and PR and the artist. Also a lively round-table conversation among three gallery representatives and the assembled guests illuminated the changing relationships between galleries and artists in an ev-er-changing landscape of online alternatives.

Lee Anne Dollison is now a member of the Los Ange-les Art Association.

Angela Holland is now represented by Nisa Touchon Fine Art, Santa Fe, NM.

Marlise Senzamici, AAC’s webmaster, would like to remind everyone to email for instructions on submit-ting work for your free portfolio posting on AAC’s website at: www.abstractartcollective.com. Portfoli-os may be accessed through AAC’s Members Gallery page. This is a nice opportunity to be included in our Members’ Gallery of artwork. Email Marlise for ex-plicit details: [email protected].

A RECENt VIsIt tO LA’s NEWEst MUsEUM: tHE BROADby A. Michael Marzolla

An architectural marvel designed by the world-re-nowned architectural firm Diller Scofidio + Renfro in collaboration with Gensler, The Broad is a new con-temporary art museum built for philanthropists Eli and Edythe Broad to house their collection of nearly 2,000 works of art. It is reported to be one of the most prominent collections of postwar and contemporary art worldwide.

The visit was organized by the Carpinteria Arts Asso-ciation. We traveled comfortably on a Santa Barbara Airbus with over forty other art enthusiasts, and en-joyed a cool — and  eventually — rainy day in down-town LA

The Broad houses a wide collection of known and lesser known contemporary artists, including Andy Warhol, Jean-Michel Basquiat, Cy Twombly, Jasper Johns, Jeff Koons, Roy Lichtenstein, and Ed Rus-

cha. I was happy to find a few of my favorites, includ-ing Sam Francis.

There is a delightful video installation “The Visi-tors”,  by Iceland artist Ragnar Kjartansson, but the most popular and difficult to visit is Yayoi Kusama’s “Infinity Mirrored Room”. The installation admits only one person at a time for 45 seconds! There was a five hour wait that day, so we took a pass.

The Broad is located right in the heart of the LA Arts District, across the street from the MOCA (Museum of Contemporary Art).  I would encourage you to plan a trip to this fascinating new addition to the Southern California art scene.

As the museum is new, it is very popular.  It is best to plan your visit in advance. You can comfortably see the museum in two hours. For more info, visit their web-site at www.thebroad.org .

ExHIBItIONsAAC members are well represented in CASA Gallery’s Buddha Abides show, including Pali-X-Mano. Rica Coulter, Mooneen Mourad, Beverly Decker, and Ka-ren Luckett. The show goes through April 29th. 23 E. Canon Perdido Street. 965-6448.
