JANUARY 2013 NEWSLETTER The next meeting will be held at the Glentworth Ex-Servicemen’s Club on 9 th January, commencing at 2000 hours. SUBSCRIPTIONS: payment is due by the end of this meeting. Rates were increased at the AGM, as follows:. Flying Member £105; Junior Member £35; Associate Member £35. As in 2012, there will be no Joining Fee in 2013, but there will be an Administration Charge of £20 for new Flying Members. This charge includes the cost of a key to the gate at the start of the lane. INDOOR FLYING: see the Social Secretary’s message below. There will be flying sessions of 10 or 15 minutes each, depending on how many people are flying & how many types of aircraft there are. Nomads members are reminded that non-Nomads can fly at these meetings by invitation only — the Social Secretary Mike Hanson should be contacted about non-members who wish to fly. HONORARY MEMBER: it was agreed at the AGM that Harry Hillman should be invited to become an Honorary Member of the Nomads. In recent years, Harry has been best-known for cutting the grass, but he joined the club around 1971 & has been Vice-Chairman, Public Relations Officer, President, Social Secretary, & Trustee. We hope he continues to support the club for many more years. HELICOPTER COMPETITIONS: the AHA has been invited again, for the week-end of 17-18 th August. The saturday will be for fun flying & setting-up, with members of the AHA providing advice & assistance to Nomads members. The competitions will be on the sunday, & Nomads members who are reasonably proficient with helis are invited to enter the Clubman's competition (see Web site http://www.theaha.co.uk/clubmans.htm for details of the schedules). ASSISTANCE FOR NEW MEMBERS: all new flying members now have to pass a flying assessment, before they can fly “solo”, i.e. without an experienced pilot standing alongside them, but some new members are not able to fly when they join the club. Clearly, they need assistance, but this is not easy to arrange. There is a list of members who are authorised to make flying assessments, on our Web site (see page heading) — go to Learners – Going Solo & read down to the bottom of that section, where there is a list of assessors. Look on your “Who’s Who” document for the ‘phone numbers of these members. The same members will provide assistance to new members who are learning to fly, but there are plenty of other members in the club who could provide assistance to newcomers, & it would help if more members made it known that they are willing to assist. Making arrangements to meet a “mentor” is perhaps the biggest problem for someone learning to fly, & it is important to bear in mind that newcomers may have to fit in with their helpers, to arrange mutually-convenient meeting times. There is usually more “free” flying time on week-days than at week-ends. FROM THE SOCIAL SECRETARY: Moving into 2013, let's hope the weather is more favourable at the patch, especially on the summer club nights, as BBQ-ing was not possible this year due to adverse conditions. For those that don't already know, indoor flying will now take place on a Sunday at White Oak Leisure Centre. The first date of the New Year will be on Sunday 13th Jan between 5 pm & 8 pm. With the vast array of micro models available, there is something to suit all styles and abilities. All members are very welcome. FROM THE COMPETITION SECRETARY: Now the insanity of Christmas and the New Year break is over and the days are once again slowly getting longer, (yes really)! Perhaps we can look forward to some good flying days this year. The various club trophies are currently at the engravers & will be presented at the February club night. Winners are:- Club Champion Malcolm Curnow, 7.5 cc Powered Glider Roger Briggs, Open & 100” Glider Dave Rowing, Scale Malcolm Curnow, Fun Fly Matt Reuben, Open Electric Glider Roger Briggs, 1300 mAh Electric Glider Mike Hibbins, Interclub combined 7.5 cc powered Glider Gerrard Goodhind A few changes for the Open Electric glider comp in 2013. long as to make the competitions impracticable. Now there will be a maximum flight time of 60 mins., afterthat places will be decided by a nearest-the-spot landing.

For 2013 there will be an extra FunFly date. The Interclub FunFly is currently run so each club holdstwo competitions each season and the results are forwarded to the co-ordinator. The second round will becombined with our own comp. We’re still working on the fine details, more information once it’s settled.Currently on the comp calendar there are two dates for both the FunFly’s in each case the second is analternative in the event of bad weather.

FROM THE CHAIRMAN: I am pleased that the Club’s officers have all remained in post for the coming year. The ordinary committee members are Richard Ernest, Mark Preston, Matt Reuben, Paul Hooper and PaulMeredith. They play an important role in ensuring the members and Trustees’ views are adequatelyrepresented in committee.

At the AGM we mentioned the need for a buddy box on models flown with First Person View, likewisethat models equipped with GPS must remain in sight of the pilot. Compliance with legislation from the CAA isa must as far as the Club is concerned.

I have been contacted by the local Special Branch Officer, as have all the model clubs and shops inKent. He wanted his details published to members, so that we can report directly to someone whoappreciates the issues, anyone we perceive as behaving suspiciously or asking pertinent questionsconcerning range, payload, accuracy etc. Any follow up will be confidential:

Hanau 2013 - Thursday May 30th – Sunday June 2nd : Personally I will travel on Wednesday and back onMonday; although slightly cheaper channel crossings can be had for a 5 day trip. Booking early in Januarycan attract some additional savings. DFDS Ferries have added a route on the Dover-Calais crossing in placeof Sea France. Eurotunnel ~ £140; P&O Ferry Dover-Calais ~ £89, hourly sailings; DFDS Ferry Dover-Calais~ £66, 2-hourly sailings (Dunkirk option), Offer Code E13EBO;http://www.dfdsseaways.co.uk/ferry-routes/ferry-to-france/dover-calais/?src=hp/na/link91All these economy fares have conditions i.e. changing crossing time/date - early/late departure could costmore. Fares that allow alterations without cost are more expensive. Some of the offers expire in January. The hotel in Neuberg is ~£35 pp B&B (twin-bed, sharing is less), a dinner is ~ £12 - £14. Contact me for moreinformation or to arrange a room. I wish you all a Happy, dry and prosperous New Year. Gerrard.

FEBRUARY 2013 NEWSLETTER

The next meeting will be held at the Glentworth Ex-Servicemen’s Club on 13th February, commencingat 2000 hours.

ENCLOSURES: together in one envelope, you should receive your 2013 membership card, & the “Who’sWho 2013?” listing with copy insurance certificate & events calendar. Members who receive the paper versionof this newsletter should get that in addition to the card & Who’s Who.

GATE LOCK COMBINATION: this will be changed on 14th February (the day after the February meeting). The new 4-digit combination is on your 2013 membership card, at bottom-left.

TALK: after the meeting, Shahid Banglawala (a columnist in the BMFA magazine) will be giving a talk onvarious aspects of flying, such as fixed-wing 3D aerobatics & setting-up planes. You can see some of whatShahid gets up to on his Web site http://www.unlimitedrc.co.uk/If you feel “3D” flying is a bit tame, think of the possibilities of “6D” — move down the Web site screen to thevideos of 6D & thrust-vectoring.

FROM THE SOCIAL SECRETARY: we had a good reception at the January meeting and I hope this willcontinue into February. Please take note, the times for February will be slightly later @ 7pm - 10pm. Dates asfollows:10th February 7pm-10pm17th March 5pm-8pm14th April 5pm-8pmNote for your calendars: the Southern Model Airshow will recommence this year at a new venue. It will beheld on the 14th & 15th September at Headcorn aerodrome in Kent. A weekend not to miss. For moreinformation, please follow this link http://www.southernmodelairshow.com/

FROM THE COMPETITION SECRETARY: The sharp eyed amongst you will have noticed there are twodates for Fun Fly’s on the calendar. As previously mentioned, this year we are entering the Interclub Fun Flycompetition. Basically each club holds two rounds at their own field for their own members. Results are thensent to Interclub for correlation. At the first round, only 4 rounds are flown with the best 3 to count. The roundsare Climb & Glide, Touch and Goes, Loops and Rolls and Spot Landing. The second round is incorporatedinto our own Fun Fly comp with the same 4 rounds being flown plus 2 or 3 extra which will only count towardsthe Nomads cup. Both rounds are open to any member flying any fixed wing aircraft. The emphasis is verymuch on the Fun part with help and encouragement freely given, usually through the medium of banter andfalling about laughing! Put the dates, Saturday 4th May and Sunday 7th July in your diary.

There’s not much else to report this month. Once again it’s either been too cold, too wet or too windy toget any flying in although I understand some members have braved the conditions. I guess they all owegratitude to Richard and his team for the shelter. Personally I’ve been working on a couple of new projectswith a lot of help from Bob, but not making a lot of progress from this end.

FROM THE CHAIRMAN: there are presently 12 people intending to go to Hanau at the end of May. Anyoneelse wishing to go should contact Gerrard regarding arrangements, tel. (01322) 336298.

AUGUST 2013 NEWSLETTER

The next meeting will be held at the flying field on 14th August. Weather permitting, there should bebarbecued food available; you can check this with Mike Hanson.

FIELD HUT: Richard Ernest & helpers have erected a “veranda” on the end of the hut. By the time thisnewsletter is sent out, it is expected that final work on the veranda will have been completed. The money tobuy the materials has come from a donation by our partner club the Hanau MBC in Germany (approximately£125), surplus from barbecues cooked by Mike Hanson (£150), & that raised by raffles of models at clubmeetings (£177); club funds have not been used for these materials. As with the hut itself, Richard’sdetermination & hard work have been the main drivers in this project — thanks & congratulations to him & hisband of helpers for their efforts in behalf of the whole club. These pictures show the state of the veranda inJuly:

TELEMETRY: the BMFA Addendum Sheet 2, dated May 2013, has a section to be added to the existing oneon Page 30, Column 2. Reference is made in this to the use of a “smartphone” as receiver for telemetrysignals, noting that the ‘phone should be switched to “flight mode”, so that it cannot act as a normal ‘phonedevice. It is advisable for any users of telemetry to read this section of the BMFA Addendum.

THERMAL SOARING & AERO-TOWING: the BMFA Addendum mentioned in the paragraph on telemetryalso has a new sub-section relating to weight limits on gliders & tugs. It states that flying any glider — or itstug — weighing over 7 kg. requires permission under CAP658 if either are to be flown above 400 feet (as bothare likely to be). Glider/tug pilots should read this Addendum to Page 40 Column 1 of the BMFA Handbook.

FPV: Chairman Gerrard Goodhind makes the following points:If a member is operating with 'First Person View' (FPV) he/she must be accompanied by a co-pilot with abuddy box. The Club flying site does not meet the CAA requirements that permit 'solo' operation.Everyone should be aware that model flying in general is controlled by CAA regulations and the Club willendeavour to keep everybody informed as these evolve. However, people with unusual models like those withFPV or heavy models — 7 kg. and over — should make themselves aware of the special requirements thatare imposed by the CAA, and guidance from the BMFA on compliance. The ability to demonstrate that theBMFA guidance has been followed will be very helpful in the event of an accident to demonstrate that the pilothas not been negligent.

FIELD GATE: thanks to Mike Hibbins for doing repair work on this.

MEMBERSHIP: this is now up to 111 Full Members, 6 Junior Members, & 5 Associate Members. This is stillsome way from what we need, but it is creeping up.

INDOOR FLYING: the following dates have been booked at The White Oak Leisure Centre:22nd September, 13th October, 3rd November, 1st December — all sundays. The new times will be 1645-1945 hours, on all those dates.

AHA COMPETITION: the field will be in use for national helicopter competitions on sunday 18th August, &there will be no club flying on that day. This is a good chance to see top-class UK F3C & F3N pilots in action;the aerobatic pilots have been here several times previously, but this is the first time that the 3D pilots havebeen here. On 17th August, AHA members will be present to offer assistance with setting-up & flyinghelicopters to club heli flyers. There should be barbecue food available on both days.

SEPTEMBER 2013 NEWSLETTER

The next meeting will be held at the Glentworth Ex-Servicemen’s Club on 12th September, commencingat 2000 hours. NOTE THE ‘NEW’ DAY — MEETINGS AT THE GLENTWORTH WILL BE ON THURSDAYEVENINGS FROM NOW ON. This won’t alter the day of meetings at the field during summertime — they willstill be on wednesdays, unless club members prefer to alter this day. This change had to be made becausethe Glentworth wants to let their room to the Dartford Concert Band on wednesday evenings throughout theyear, & that means they will be paying more than we do.

INDOOR MEETINGS: for the next few months, these will be on sundays, from 1645 to 1945 hours. Thedates are: September 22nd, October 13th, November 3rd, December 1st.

AHA HELICOPTER COMPETITIONS: these went off well on 18th August. This year, the day was enlivenedby the F3N flyers, who fly mainly set routines, but in a 3D fashion. That is, they are not complete nutters! Thisbrought in some younger competitors, one being 15 years old (& a good flyer). The F3C & F3N competitionswere the first of two to decide the teams for 2014; the next selection rounds will be at the Nationals atBarkston Heath on August Bank Holiday week-end.

Matt Reuben came 3rd in the F3C competition, getting close to Mark Christy in 2nd, in the final round.Steve Roberts came 1st. It seems a pity that more Nomads’ members do not avail themselves of this once-a-year chance to see really good heli flyers.

NEW MEMBERS: we have been joined by the following members this year:Barrie, Tim, & William Higgott, Antonio Bonacci, Clive Hitchcock, Gary Smith, Stephen Walker, BartimeusOdotei, David Lockwood, Paul Baggott, Jim Tall. Please give them any help you can.

FIELD HUT: this now has rails on three sides, to make it less easy for anyone to slip off the edges. There arealso steps to make it easier to get up to the floor & down from it.

FROM THE SOCIAL SECRETARY: Winter is fast approaching and the nights are drawing in at an alarmingrate. But do not panic, the first of the indoor flying sessions commences this month. We will continue to fly atWhite Oak Leisure Centre on Sunday 22nd September between 16:45 and 19:45. Price remains unchangedat £5.00 for the evening. There is a wide variety of fixed-wing and helicopter options available for all levels of flying ability. Please seebelow, links to some of the manufacturers websites to see what's available on the market at present.

Another two dates for your calendar, The Southern Model Airshow on 14th & 15th September from 10:00.This is a great opportunity to pick up a bargain, a winter build project, or an ultra micro flyer for the indoorsessions. You can still buy tickets online until the 6th September @ http://www.heritage-events.co.uk/event.php?eventid=16 to ensure queue less entry on the day. Your day ticket is now valid oneither Saturday or Sunday so you don't have to decide which day to attend at the time of booking.I look forward to seeing you all at White Oak on the 22nd, Mike.***Congratulations to Matt Reuben who has successfully retained his team position with the British F3C team.Well done Matt***

FROM THE CHAIRMAN: I heard on a TV weather forecast that 31st August marked the end of themeteorological summer and it had been the best one since 2006. Let’s hope it continues in September andOctober. There is always change around the corner and the news that we must move to the second Thursdayat the Glentworth Club is not ideal for me. However, it may be better for some of you who cannot make it on aWednesday. Certainly I appreciate it when a good number do attend because it is the place where discussionand decisions are made about the direction we are heading. If you cannot attend and an issue on which youhave strong views is to be discussed you can always write to Bryan Davies and have your say.

I am pleased that we were able to welcome several new members and one or two old friends back into theClub. I do hope you will all enjoy your membership to the full and have found help when needed. We still havea little way to go in order to balance the books and new members are always welcome. In the meantime weare still looking to make savings on our expenditure.

I would also like to congratulate Matt Reuben for his achievements at the World Helicopter Championships. One can only admire such dedication to perfecting the skills necessary to both fly and set up helicopters forsuch a demanding schedule.

A few things have cropped up in the summer and here are some reminders as we start the new term. First Iurge everyone to use the frequency board and use your membership card to cover the appropriate frequency. Some members still use 35 MHz gear and for them it is vital to avoid frequency clashes. Whilst 2.4 GHzequipment does not have that problem the card shows the pilot is a current member. The rules are clear wemust use the peg board.

The next issue is about mobile phones which, as it stands, should not be taken to the pits or flight line. However, the phone has become a way of life for some and of a size, like one’s wallet, it lives in your pocket.Initial concerns that there could be an interference issue don’t appear to have materialised. In any event manyphones now have a ’flight mode’ which when enabled mean it is impossible for them to interfere with ourequipment. Some members also use the camera and video functions to record their own and their friends’experiences at the field. However, the real concern, in my opinion, is that people are tempted to make andreceive calls whilst flying. We risk a fine and penalty points if caught handling a phone when driving. In myview, losing concentration when flying means that even ‘hands free’ is inappropriate. I hope we can talk thisover at the next meeting and decide if the rule needs to be amended.

Please don’t forget to follow the country code when it comes to the gates. If open leave it open if closed, openit, go through and close it behind you. Please don’t assume that somebody who might be following will shutthe gate which you have opened. Wait and make sure they know what has to be done. Apparently some carsgot down the lane late one evening in the summer and our members were blamed for leaving the gate openafter it was locked shut earlier in the evening.

Now autumn has arrived let’s hope we continue to enjoy an ‘Indian Summer’ and I look forward to seeingeveryone on the field and at the September meeting.

SECRETARY’S REPORT: poor wintry weather put some members off visiting the field for several months, &the indoor season arrived almost before the decent summer was noticed. Maybe more members shouldconsider coming to the indoor flying sessions. There are currently 111 Flying Members & 6 Junior Members, some of whom joined part-way through the year, leaving us well short of the number we need to cover ourexpenditure.

SOCIAL SECRETARY’S REPORT: The November indoor meet was better attended than October but weneed more member support to ensure the event can continue successfully in December and into the newyear. The monthly meet is a great way to keep your stick fingers nimble and practice those aerobatic movesyou'd promised yourself to master during the summer, but never plucked the courage to try.Come along to White Oak leisure centre on Sunday 1st December at 4.45 for mince pies and a fly, in goodcompany. We look forward to seeing you there.I'm pleased to confirm the following dates for 2014:- 12th January, 16th February, 16th March & 6th April. Please, enter these dates into your calendar.

CHAIRMAN’S REPORT 2013: Another year has passed, with enough rain following a wet winter whichmeant the patch was in good order all year. Whilst Hansons’ lawyers have still not sent the lease paperwork,we are being invoiced as per the deal negotiated last year and I am chasing their agent to get it sorted out.RWE Hanson have no other plans for the area and appear to have accepted that we are a far better ‘cashcrop’ than anything else that could be grown.

Richard Ernest and his team extended the cabin to have a veranda once again funded by donations andraffles. My thanks to all of you who contributed and the members who gave up their time to do the work.

There have not been too many issues about the flight line arrangements. We are one of a few Clubs whomanage to have helicopters alongside fixed wing aircraft and indeed Matt Reuben flew for Team GB in theWorld Championships this year. He joins several other members from the club who over the years haveachieved such a high standard and set a great example for us all. However, it does require members to havea little forbearance and share the ‘air time’ when there are helicopters and fixed wing pilots wishing to flycircuits.

The arrangements for mowing the grass have worked well and we have saved a considerable sum of money,as we no longer have a mower to maintain. One mower was sold and the other is in storage in the gun club. That also means the garage can be handed back making further savings. Once again I am grateful to Richardand other members who have now cleared the garage.

Our relations with the Gun Club have been good and we have not had to replace the lock this year. Memberscontinue to be welcome to buy refreshments from the Café in their club house.

My thanks to everyone who contributed their time to the Club during the year, once again it has been apleasure to work with the committee. I am sure, like me, you appreciate all that they do for us. Bryan Davieshas been kept busy although to save distribution costs the Newsletter is no longer published monthly, withmore reliance placed on email for special announcements. I am grateful to Mike Hibbins who distributes theNewsletter by post and has run the Competitions.

Paul Hillman has kept our finances under control and will as usual make a recommendation for the futurefinancial well-being of the Club, which is still challenged by our reduced numbers. The savings made throughthe year will hopefully significant reduce the deficit which would otherwise be unsustainable in the long term.Mike Hanson had some scope to showing off his culinary skills, with excellent home-made burgers and wellcooked sausages. Mike also manages the indoor arena, attendance is down on previous years although lastweekend’s event was reasonably well supported. Regrettably attendance at our meetings is also muchreduced especially after the move to a Thursday evening. I say regrettable in as much that new membersshould be welcomed there, financial decisions made from time to time and other Club business decided whichwe prefer to manage at Club level rather than by committee. That being said the committee are empowered toact for the Club and may, if required, take decisions. We must endeavour to arrange more talks, visitingexperts or specialist suppliers to encourage members to come along for a more entertaining evening. Thefacilities now provided on the patch might mean we could perhaps extend our summer on the patch intoSeptember

Whilst we did not invite the Mayor this year it would do no harm to make a donation to the Mayor’s charityfund so that we remain on the radar, so to speak.

In June a group of 10 members went to Hanau and enjoyed a long weekend. We had plenty of opportunitiesto fly and visit another transport museum, once again the food was excellent. Next summer it is our turn tohost the weekend and it is ‘pencilled in’ for Thursday 19th ~ Sunday 22nd June 2014. There are plans afoot toarrange a family day with members showing off their models on the Sunday.

As in previous years we made the field available for a National Helicopter Association contest and theorganisers of the AHA were grateful for our hospitality and thanked the members who had made themwelcome.

Finally, may I wish you and your family, a merry Christmas, a prosperous New Year, enjoyable and safe flyingin 2014 and beyond. Gerrard Goodhind.
