Hawks, the winning team of Retail Olympics 2016 played hard, displayed true sportsmanship and finally walked away with the cup, after winning the highest count of 23 medals. We caught up with Team Captain, Manoj Dubey and Vice-Captain, Akshay Kamath to take us through the team’s inspirational 3 month journey from earnest anticipation to ultimate ecstasy. Edited excerpts…

What was your initial reaction on being declared the winning team?

Our initial reaction was a cross between elation, triumph and relief. We were elated and triumphant on emerging as victors of a closely fought competition. At the same time, we were relieved that the two months of dogged preparations and sleepless nights had finally come to an end.

You rose up through the ranks slowly and steadily to finally reach the top. Can you take us through some of the highs and lows of that journey?

The highs came through every little victory, whether it was a qualifying stage or an eventual medal. Having amassed 23 medals, we were safely assured of a high ranking throughout the competition. There were a few obstacles, but we resolved them as a team, soon put them behind us and at all times kept our spirits high – a key to winning this competition.

Please share some highlights of how teamwork worked in your favour to achieve this win?

With the limited time in hand, we needed to build a cohesive and goal-oriented

team across colleagues from the two companies. We were quick to use digital channels to ensure communication was optimized. From our first meeting itself, we reviewed every event and its relative importance and requirement. This helped us strategize not only on our method for medal wins but also on key people who would lead the event to fruition. Secondly, we, as a team, built a brand identity for every member to cement their pride of place and belongingness. From the effusive participation at our opening day parade to the raucous support during the events, Hawks soon began to dominate

not only through medals but also in the winning spirit.

What was the role of the Captain and Vice-Captain in leading and motivating the team to victory?

We played the part of facilitators. We had a team of champions - we just needed to ensure that each and every member contributed either through participation or support and had access to all the information that they needed. We created event captains and empowered them to motivate and guide their teams to a win. Finally, every Gold medal winner, had their

picture placed as our group display photo on WhatsApp – only to be replaced by the next winner. This ensured that every member strove for that elusive, albeit well-earned moment of fame.

What would you say were some of your main areas of strength that contributed to the victory?

Team spirit and participation were the two chief contributors to this win. We promised

as a team to follow a ‘No Walkover’ principle. By following this simple diktat, we ensured that every event had the requisite participation and none of our competitors got a free ride at our expense.

Anything that you would have liked done differently in the Retail Olympics this year that could possibly be suggested for incorporation next year?

The teams should not be changed every

year. In the limited time that we have, it helps to have a team that you identify and bond with. At the end of this event, all teams have achieved that, notwithstanding winning or losing.

Please share some words for the teams who didn’t win and other employees who can gain from your experience.

All the teams that participated were phenomenal. Every event was played

fairly and participated in with the right spirit and attitude. After the first few weeks, as the competition heated up, the journey became even more exciting with each team strategizing on its competitors’ strengths or apparent weaknesses. It was a fun ride and we would like to thank every team for making Retail Olympics 2016 as exciting as it turned out to be.

CREATIVE CATS A RACE WELL RUNSecuring second place for the second year running, with a total of 19 medals - most of them won by the girls in the team, Creative Cats is an example of how good planning, co-ordination and delegation of responsibility within the team ensured multiple match wins, propelling them to the top. Team Captain Amit Hegishte tells us more. Edited excerpts…

After a neck-to-neck fight, you were adjudged first runners-up. Please share the highlights of this 3 month long journey.

Firstly, I would like to congratulate Team Creative Cats for being adjudged first runners-up for the second consecutive year. The credit for this achievement goes to all the team members who enthusiastically participated in the games. In particular, I would like to thank my vice-captain, Amit Dashora for aiding me in the planning to final execution of our strategy. Overall, I think the team’s historical competitive streak ensured 100% participation from all team members, allowing us to show our prowess in every single game.

What were some of the strengths that

helped Creative Cats secure the Silver?

We began by identifying core committee members for the team and delegating responsibility to execute our strategy to win. We then selected the best team players for each game, based on their performance and strength to compete against opponents. This ensured that each participating team member was playing the games they were best at during the week and on weekends and winning matches for us. A special mention here must be made regarding our women players who won maximum games for us; a fascinating show of ‘girl power’. Last, but not the least, ‘zero walkover’ was a key team mantra that we followed religiously all through the tournament.

How were you able to juggle day-to-day work with Retail Olympics, ensuring you gave your best to both?

We nominated internal team captains for each event who were in charge of the players in their respective teams. In this way, each member was made accountable and given responsibility, which helped the team to play to their strengths without losing focus on work.

How important is the Retail Olympics as a part of the work culture at ABRL?

The Retail Olympics plays a vital role in breaking the cross-functional barriers, bringing in a lot of synergy between

employees of different departments of ABRL and Pantaloons.

Please share some useful tips that you learnt along this journey that could benefit all employees?

While there are no ‘special tricks’ we resorted to, through the Retail Olympics experience, I learnt the importance of believing in your team and delegating responsibility to them, trusting that they will fulfil the goal, just like in the daily work scenario. Secondly, a captain’s role is much like a coach, in terms of motivating your team, urging them to participate in every game and ultimately winning every match to lift the coveted cup.

THESEUS FIGHT TO THE FINISHA burning passion to win combined with team commitment and earnest participation helped Theseus secure the second runners-up position at this year’s Retail Olympics, bagging a total of 20 medals. Team Captain Manoj Panda tells us more. Edited excerpts…

After a neck-to-neck fight, you were adjudged second runners-up. Please share the highlights of this 3 month long journey.

Retail Olympics 2016 was a great experience. The credit for our win goes to the entire team, and especially to the participants who took time out from their busy schedules to lend their support to the team. Our key strategy was to participate in every sport, stretch our levels of physical fitness and above all, enjoy every minute of it.

What were some of the team strengths that helped Theseus secure the bronze?

Vishak was a key motivator for the team. He participated in the games and also coached many members on the ground. Badminton and Lawn Tennis were the game changers for us. He was the inspiration for fitness, as well as time management. Apart from that, other factors that helped us win was keen participation by each team member, readiness to accept on ground challenges, and most of all a true spirit of sportsmanship displayed by the team in its entirety.

How was the team able to juggle day-to-day work with Retail Olympics, ensuring they gave their best to both?

Though not an easy task, we managed to strike the right balance between work and participation in the Retail Olympics, thanks to the commitment of team members and the excellent co-ordination by the Organizing Committee.

How important is the Retail Olympics as a part of the work culture at ABRL?

While the central focus of the Retail Olympics was to showcase the sporting prowess of employees, the event also had other multiple benefits. This included meeting new people thanks to the joint participation of ABRL and Pantaloons in this event, while highlighting the importance of striking a balance between work and

fitness in our daily lives for good health.

Please share some useful tips that you learnt along this journey that could benefit all employees.

The two main takeaways from the event are the importance of team participation and fitness. There is always a role for every team member, be it taking part in the games, or even just cheering on the team to victory, making sure to have fun along the way. The best part of this year’s format of Retail Olympics was that each team had a mix of both ABRL and Pantaloons employees.

14 games, 8 teams, 6 venues, 3 months, 2 companies and excitement galore. Retail Olympics 2016 - the celebration of a hard-fought battle of guts and glory, culminated in a grand ceremony of much pomp and show on the 7th of June at The Lalit hotel in Mumbai.

In its second year, the Retail Olympics awarded 122 medal winners at a glitzy ceremony that was truly reflective of the spirit, passion and fire displayed by ABRL and Pantaloons, in the frenzied three months that followed the thumping opening ceremony on the 9th of March.

The welcome note by Pranab Barua,

Business Director – Apparel & Retail Business, Aditya Birla Group set the tone for the evening as he effectively captured all the zeal and hard work put in by both, the participants and the Organizing Committee, comprising KS Shashikanth, Lalit Dutt, Akshay Kende, Kushal Garg and Prasanna Venkatesh, while extolling all the teams who put their best foot

The overall experience of Retail Olympics 2016 was awesome! Being a sportsperson, I enjoyed being a part of a big Retail Olympics team comprising participants from both ABRL and Pantaloons and I participated in almost all events. My team Stallions wasn’t able to win, but we managed to come in at fifth position. The Organizing Committee did an awesome job, showcasing very good event management skills.

forward and fought to the finish for well-earned rewards.

As the winners came up on stage, one by one to receive their prized trophies, melodious voices singing much-loved Bollywood tunes rang out as if to serenade them, while dancers in glamorous costumes swayed to dhamaka beats. The evening was indeed a brilliant display of talented performances that included an exciting antakshari competition for employees hosted by Sumit Chandna, Senior Vice President - ABRL and show-

stopping performances by little angels who set the ramp on fire with the Kids' Fashion Show.

Revelling in their moment of glamour and fame, the winners had much more to cheer about as the night wore on. Yet for a moment, they took a pause to reflect on the days and months leading up to the extravagant closing ceremony.

Through feverish days managing work and play, and many a weekend spent battling away, ABRL and Pantaloons

The games line-up this year was very impressive. This is the first time that I participated in the Retail Olympics and I won a silver medal for arm-wrestling. I think everyone had great fun and there was a lot of participation from both ABRL and Pantaloons. This led to very good interaction between the employees of both companies. It was a very well-organized event.

became a united force, working with their teams - Hawks, Creative Cats, Theseus, Stallions, Athos, Badmash Company, Zeus and Hercules to vanquish the opponents and hold their fray. Coursing through the days with only the thoughts

I think Retail Olympics 2016 was a wonderful experience. It was very warm and the venue also added a new flavour to it. The Organizing Committee did an amazing job. Involving the children through a Kids’ Fashion Show was a very interesting idea, as it kept the children occupied. Overall, I think the event was greatly enjoyed by one and all.

I wasn’t expecting to win 6 medals when the Retail Olympics started. And to top it with the Most Valuable Player Award was the cherry on the cake. Everything from the scale of arrangements to the enthusiastic employee participation was pleasantly surprising. As the felicitations, selfie-clicking and the DJ’s tunes wound down, winners and participants took a final bow. With spirits soaring and heads held high, Retail Olympics 2016 finally drew to a close, as employees determined to make Retail Olympics 2017 an equally fitting sporting extravaganza.

It was heartening to see colleagues from ABRL and Pantaloons come out in large numbers to participate in Retail Olympics 2016. The energy was truly palpable right from the loud cheers at the opening ceremony and continued without ceasing till the trophy was finally lifted at the closing ceremony. Teams from both companies truly displayed sportsmanship and showmanship at its best, playing as a single united force, and enjoying every minute of the challenge to reach the top. It was very nice to see the families joining in the celebrations.

This was yet another good edition of the Retail Olympics. It was a great opportunity to get closer to the team members from Pantaloons. The competition was intense; we all resolved to get fitter for next year. Congratulations to the organizers for putting together a great, fun-filled event.

KS Shashikanth AVP-HR, Aditya Birla Retail Limited

“The recently concluded Retail Olympics saw a huge amount of excitement, engagement and passion for sports. It is truly heartening to see employees continue to play their favourite sport even after the close of the event and more importantly, to see people becoming conscious of, and working on their improved fitness levels. Cheers and kudos to the Organizing Committee and the captains who rallied their teams together towards making this a successful event. This event has given us many memorable snapshots and here’s wishing ABRL a fitter, healthier and happy year ahead till we meet again. Wear your passion for Sports at all times!

It was absolutely delightful to see the raw passion, spirit and enthusiasm of every employee of Pantaloons and ABRL who participated in this year’s Retail Olympics. Taking on every challenge in their stride, and celebrating every victory as a team, motivating each other to rise to the top and most of all putting their heart and soul into each of the 14 games, I think our colleagues truly displayed teamwork, commitment and passion at its best – a great example for all of us to emulate in our daily lives.
