ABSTRACT

Amongst different institutions, "Parija Library" of Utkal University, !3hubancswar

has about 101 palm-leaf manuscripts (mss.) on Ayurveda to its credit. Most of these

I11SS. have not been reported earlier. Ilerewith a brief description of these mss. has

been made with the intention of bringing it out far the Ayurvedic fraternity and to

enrich the literary stock of Ayurveda.

Introduction:The antiquity of prevalence and

propagation of Ayurveda in Orissa can beconsidered as old as the cultural heritageof Orissa. The inscriptions engravedduring the reign of Ashok at Dhauli, nearBhubaneswar speak a lot for herbaltreatment, which was commonly knownfor men and animals. This was the mostancient times when herbal treatment spreadto the neighbouring states as well as thethen Mid-Asian countries. The traders ofancient Orissa (then known as Kalinga orUtkal) were famous for their trading in thefar-east countries transacting business ofspices and herbal drugs besides othercommodities.

On the other hand, due to abundantlyavailable palm-leaves in Orissa, the samehave been predom inantly used as a sourcematerial for writing various treatises. Manyof these treatises are available on as diversesubjects as history, astrology, literature,

religion, Ayurveda and all written on palmleaves. It seems that the art of processingthese leaves to make them endurable for alonger period was known to the people ofOrissa. That is why till 19th century. A.D.such process was continuing as a tradition.

Utkal University, the oldest universityof the state of Orissa has a library largeenough to maintain collection ofmanuscripts of Ayurveda. In this paper anattempt has been made to present a briefaccount of the titles, authors and period ofthese manuscripts alongwith some of theirsalient features which need to behigh lighted.Descriptive Information:

In this library there are 101 palm-leafmanuscripts on Ayurveda. All except onewhich is in Devnagri, are scribed in Oriyascript. The language of most of thesemanuscripts is either Sanskrit, Oriya orboth. The other details regarding thesemanuscripts are as follows:

Mishra 77 30x2.3the table (sl. noA1) given above. It saysabout the 5th anka of king Mukunda Deva(1559-1568) which can be dated around1563 A.D. approximately.

Similarly, another treatise namelyVaidya Tattwarnava written by BalabhadraMishra is also very specific to Orissa. Inthis treatise the occurrence of diseases andtheir remedies are described according tothe planetary positions of one's horoscope.Another information appears to be newwhich is a commentary namelyBalavodhini in local oriya language onMadhav Nidanam by Narayana Sarangi.Some reputed oriya poets have also scribed

Many of the titles of these manuscriptare quite well-known to other parts of thecountry at national level like MadhavNidanam, Vaidya Jeevanam etc. But mostare specific to the state of Orissa. In someof the manuscripts the names mentionedthough are not clearly indicative of theauthor or the scribe some have been reputedthroughout the state. Like one suchtreatise, i.e. Chikitsarnava or ChikitsaSarasangraha authored by Viswanath Senati II now is not published at the nationallevel. Some indication from the period ofscribing of this treatise can be inferred from

Ayurvedic texts in prose and poetry amongwhich those ofBhima Das and DinakrishnaDas are reputed ones.

The manuscripts under thenomenclatures Ayurvedah, Ayurvedashastram and Vaidyashstram need to beexplored as some of them havecommentary also indicating the possibilityof any important treatise lying in them. Allthese 101 manuscripts cover varioussubjects of Ayurveda like KayachikitsaDravyaguna, Rasashastra, BhaisajyaKalpana as well as those of astro-medicineand veterinary treatment.

Conclusion:Since most of these manuscripts have

not been published, exploring the same byway of transcription, edition and translationwould be helpful to bring out certain newtreatises and historical data hithertounknown.
