NEW STANDARD:

Australian Anchoring Standard AS 5216:2018 AS 5216:2018 is an Australian standard that gives guidance on the design of anchorages to concrete, and the prequalification of such anchor products. Although post-installed anchoring in Australia has been in existence for at least 60 years, it was only less than three years ago that a proper anchoring standard was published and referenced. The said anchoring standard is SA TS 101:2015.

BackgroundIn 2011, the need for an anchoring standard was put forward by AEFAC (Australian Engineered Fasteners and Anchors Council). To meet the NCC 2016 (National Construction Code 2016) submission deadlines, AEFAC had to take the “Technical Specification” route, thus prompting the name SA TS 101 (Standards Australia Technical Specification 101). SA TS 101 is primarily referenced as a “deemed-to-satisfy” standard in the 2016 edition of the NCC, but is also referenced in a number of other Australian Standards, as enumerated below:

• AS 5100.1:2017 - Bridge design Scope and general principles• AS 5100.8:2017 - Bridge design Rehabilitation and strengthening of existing bridges• AS 5131:2016 - Structural Steelwork-Fabrication and Erection• AS 3600:2018 (Draft) - Concrete Structures• AS 1576:2018 (Draft) - Scaffolding General Requirements• AS 2785:2018 (Draft) - Suspended ceilings - Design and installation

The move to convert SA TS 101 to an Australian Standard was initiated in response to industry feedback received, when the NCC 2016 was released. This initiative resulted in the review of SA TS 101, and shortly after, the publication of AS 5216:2018 in May 2018.

How is AS 5216:2018 different from SA TS 101?Other than the name, not much. Majority of the changes made from SA TS 101 to AS 5216 are editorial – it is practically the same content.

Is AS 5216:2018 a referenced standard already?Not yet. However, it is anticipated to be referenced in the 2019 edition of the NCC – replacing the spot currently occupied by SA TS 101.

What to expect?Manufacturers and designers will still be largely using/referencing SA TS 101 until AS 5216:2018 becomes a referenced document in the next edition of the NCC.
