Offering affordable short-term job training programs and ESL and academic classes at no cost.

REGISTRATION/ENROLLMENT REQUIREMENTSEnrollment is in the counseling office. Academic classes require a placement test to determine the appropriate level.

Any person 16 years of age or older is eligible for enrollment. Those under 18 must have approval from their parent, home school, and AFOC Administration. Enrollment must be confirmed by attendance at first class meeting. Under the continuous enrollment policy, vacancies at the first class meeting will be filled immediately.

FEE INFORMATION1. Enrollment fees must paid at the time of registration.

2. Student I.D. ($12 per school semester) valid 07-01-17 thru 12-31-17 & 01-01-18 thru 06-30-18.

3. High School Students are exempt from all fees.

All fees are payable at the time of registration. We accept cash, debit, or credit card. Checks are not accepted.

REFUND POLICYFees will be refunded ONLY under the following conditions and a $20 drop/withdrawal fee will be applied.

1. Student withdraws and requests a refund within 7 calendar days following the first scheduled class session after enrollment.

2. Fee was paid in error.

3. Class is closed by Administration.

ASSESSMENTPlacement testing for students enrolling into English as a Second Language (ESL), Academic or Career Technical Education (CTE) programs is required. Students interested in academic classes may bring their high school transcripts for evaluation and enrollment into appropriate classes. The test is offered at no cost. Call (213) 765-2400 for testing schedule.

CAREER TECHNICAL EDUCATION (CTE) The Career Technical Education (CTE) program provides competency-based and academically-integrated career training. Industry professionals with years of real-world, on-the-job experiences prepare CTE students for entry-level employment, career advancement, and industry certification. The CTE program serves adults and concurrently enrolled high school students. Individuals with disabilities and special needs are encouraged to participate.

CERTIFICATESCertificates for Career Technical Education (CTE) are awarded upon successful completion of course. Competencies must be met before a certificate is awarded. There is a $10 fee for duplicate certificates. Please see Counseling Office for more information.

CLASS CANCELLATIONSThe administration reserves the right to reduce the number of class offerings, reduce the length of courses and/or reduce the number of class meetings due to insufficient funding provided by the State of California, or insufficient numbers of students enrolled, or if the average attendance falls below the number required by the Los Angeles School District-Division of Adult and Career Education.

COUNSELING AND GUIDANCEAn orientation/assessment in reading and math is given to new students. Call (213) 765-2400 for scheduled times. Students receive assistance in course credit evaluation, program planning and career-technical guidance. Bilingual counselors are available.

DISABILITY SUPPORT SERVICES PROGRAM (DSSP)The Disability Support Services Office is committed to providing equal educational access for all eligible adult students enrolled at AFOC. Our goal is to offer supportive services to each student with a verifiable disability. Services available may include: Registration & Guidance; Resource Room; Sign-language Interpreters; Assistive Technology; Agency referrals and assessment accommodations. DRESS CODE STANDARDSYour cooperation is needed to ensure that AFOC continues to be a safe learning environment for all students and staff. All students are expected to dress appropriately for the educational environment. We believe that appropriate student dress contributes to a productive learning environment, and we want to ensure the health and safety of our students. Additionally, preparation for your future career goals includes dressing as you would for a job.

ENGLISH AS A SECOND LANGUAGE PROGRAM (ESL)English as a Second Language classes are competency based courses designed to develop communicative competence in listening, speaking, reading, writing and numeracy for the immediate needs of adult English learners. We offer instruction in literacy, beginning, intermediate and advanced levels free of charge. Students are assessed for appropriate level placement.

SEXUAL HARASSMENTIt is the policy of the Los Angeles Unified School District to maintain a working and learning environment that is free from sexual harassment. Sexual harassment of or by employees or students is a form of gender discrimination in that it constitutes differential treatment on the basis of gender, and, for that reason, is a violation of state and federal laws and a violation of this policy.

SUPPORTIVE SERVICESEducational services are available for all students, veterans, and adults with disabilities as well as referrals from EDD and I-TRAIN.

TOBACCO FREE CAMPUS/NO SMOKINGFederal and state governments have adopted various anti-tobacco laws that require schools adopt and fully implement tobacco-free environment policies. As required by these laws, the Los Angeles Unified School District has prohibited smoking and the use of all tobacco products on all school and District property.

UNIFORM COMPLAINT PROCEDUREComplaints alleging unlawful discrimination or failure to comply with state or federal law in adult basic education, consolidated categorical aid programs, migrant education, career technical education, child care and development programs, child nutrition programs and special education programs must be made in writing and given to the District's Compliance Officer. ADULT DIPLOMA OPTIONS

HIGH SCHOOL DIPLOMAStudents may obtain a high school diploma by completing 170 required credits in specific courses. Credits previously earned at any accredited secondary or foreign school equivalent to high school level may be accepted.

HIGH SCHOOL EQUIVALENCY (HSE) TEST PREPARATIONAdults may earn a High School Equivalency Certificate by taking the High School Equivalency Test. Study for the High School Equivalency by taking a High School Equivalency preparation course in the Individualized Instruction Lab and/or in the convenience of your home (Distance Learning). The first step is to take the English and Math placement tests. Students may enroll in the High School Equivalency program at any time in the semester at no cost.

Note: Students must be at least 17 years 10 months of age to take the High School Equivalency test.

HIGH SCHOOL EQUIVALENCY (HSE) DISTANCE LEARNINGStudents can prepare for the high school equivalency test ANYTIME, ANYPLACE. Our teachers are now equipped with an online resource to enrich and accelerate learning for students preparing for the HiSET exam. This course is offered through our Adult Independent Studies program.

Note: The High Equivalency Certificate is recognized by employers, job training programs and community colleges.

INDIVIDUALIZED INSTRUCTIONCourses are offered through individualized instruction (referred as I.I. Lab) in the Learning Centers where different study programs meet the individual needs of learners. Classes are completed at the student's pace.

OFFICIAL HIGH SCHOOL EQUIVALENCY TEST SITE

HIGH SCHOOL EQUIVALENCY TEST (HiSET)AFOC is an official high school equivalency test site. The HiSET exam is a test of high school equivalency and it is offered in English and in Spanish. The exam includes five subtests that you can schedule to take in any order. ACCELERATED COLLEGE AND CAREER TRANSITION (AC²T) FORMERLY KNOWN AS ALTERNATIVE EDUCATION AND WORK CENTER (AEWC)This program focuses on youth and young adults, 16-24 years old. Guidance and support for each student will be provided through completion of individualized student plans (ISPs) that include opportunities that lead to an adult high school diploma or equivalency, higher education, apprenticeship, and other CTE training programs.

CREDIT RECOVERY PROGRAMConcurrently-enrolled high school students may receive academic high school credit by enrolling at any AFOC campus during their intersession, evenings or Saturdays. All high school students must obtain written authorization from their high school counselors and parents to attend AFOC. The selection of classes is made by the student’s home school counselor or Career Advisor. A placement test is required prior to enrollment.

FULL-TIME YOUNG ADULT PROGRAM (FTYA)This program is designed for high school drop-outs ages 16 and 17. The course of study leads to a high school diploma.
