President's Message Well, we had the Big Event Weekend in Maitland, with the Train Ride/ BBQ, the Open House/Award Presentation at Clark & Ilene's house, The Train Meet on Saturday, and the "President's Banquet" on Saturday night. This was an experiment, holding the Awards Ceremony on Friday night before the meet, and it seemed to work well. We had a much larger attendance of members than when we gave out awards at the Saturday night banquet, and that was the idea (to have more member attendance at club-sponsored events. After the open house at the Vegazo’s, Ilene Vegazo told me they had very little leftovers - two shrimp, three grapes, and a meatball - so I ate them.

It is now election time, and you should receive your ballots and candidate’s biographies in this issue. Please vote for a candidate for each office and return your ballot to the address indicated on the ballot.

Also enclosed is the ballot for by-laws changes. These changes are for reasons - read the ballot for "reason for change". Vote "yes" or "no" and send your ballot with your candidates vote to the address indicated on the ballot.

Next event is the Tampa Bay Area (Largo) meet. I'm the Meet Host for this meet, so send your Table Reservation Form to me. Read the Meet Story and the Night at the Museum (Open House) description elsewhere in this issue.

Lionel Descendant Joins TCA, By Charles Anyan, President, Southern Division TCA We in the Southern Division of the TCA had an interesting event at our Open House the night before our Orlando Area Meet in November. A surprise guest showed up. She was Amy Saypol Tompkins, the great-granddaughter of Joshua Lionel Cowen, the founder of Lionel Trains. J. Lionel’s Granddaughter married Ron Saypol some years ago. Mr. Saypol was an executive at the Lionel Corporation, and in 1968, became president of Lionel. They had two daughters; Cathy and Amy. After many years away from the toy train environment, Amy and Cathy became enthused again about Lionel trains and other Lionel products, especially after a trip to the York, PA Eastern Division TCA meet. The trip was arranged by Bob Mintz, editor of the on-line site e*trains, and a new member of the Southern Division (see www.tcaetrain.org). They were both invited by Bob to attend our Orlando meet and Open House, and Amy showed up at both of them. Cathy wanted to attend, but she lives out-of-state and couldn’t make it. Only a few of us knew Amy would be at the Open House on Friday, and the members were totally surprised when she showed up. Many had their pictures taken with her. At the Open House, tremendously hosted by Ilene and Clark Vegazo, we had an informal Southern Division member’s meeting, in which awards were presented for various members for outstanding work during the previous year. In opening remarks I introduced Amy, and she made a short speech in which she expressed her happiness at being there. Amy Later told a few stories about her memories of life as a child visiting the J. Lionel home. I’m sure she has many more. At the Train Meet the next day Amy filled out the paperwork to join TCA and the Southern Division. I was privileged to be one of her sponsors. Bob Mintz captured the historic moment in the accompanying photo. We believe that this is the first time any member of the J. Lionel Cowen family has ever joined the TCA. At the same time, Amy’s son Jimmy also joined us. Bob Mintz was co-sponsor for both of them. Cathy Saypol is also expected to join. We are happy that Amy and Jimmy are TCA members and proud that they are members of the Southern Division.

SUNCOAST MODEL RAILROAD CLUB LAYOUT OPEN DURING THE TAMPA BAY AREA MEET JAN. 29, 2011,

The Suncoast Model Railroad Club has graciously agreed to open their HO and N Scale Club Layout during the TCA Southern Division Train show being held in Largo on January 29, 2011. The layout is only a few short blocks away, and is well worth the effort to get there. I have visited this layout many times and highly recommend you take the time to visit this wonderful layout. You will see over eight HO scale miles and 15 N scale miles of mainline fun. Please consider giving a small donation to the Suncoast Model Railroad Club to help keep their Layout running. The Meet Story - 1st Quarter 2011 The MINNREG Building, Largo FL, January 29th, 2011

NOTE NEW EARLY SETUP TIME ON FRIDAY!

The TCA Southern Division's first meet of 2011 will be held Saturday January 29th at the MinnReg Building, 6340 126th Avenue North, Largo Florida. Table holder setup will be Friday night from 3 PM to 7 PM and Saturday morning from 7 AM to 9 AM. During setup time, the building will be open to table holders only. On Friday we must be out of the building no later than 7p.m. Tables cost $20 each for TCA Southern Division members. Non-Southern Division TCA member tables cost $30 each. The meet will be open to TCA members only at 9 AM and the public starting at 11 AM. The meet closes at 4 PM. Plenty of free parking is available. Meet Host – The Meet Host is Charles Anyan. Membership Meeting - We will hold a membership meeting at 10 AM to discuss items of interest, old and new business, and significant items from the Board of Director's meeting. 2011 Southern Division Dues Renewal - The Treasurer, Mike Powell, will be present to accept your 2011 dues ($10) if you have not paid them yet. Operating Layout - We will have at least two working layouts, including the giant LEGO layout that we had last year. At present we are trying to get another. Open House – Friday, January 28th, 7 to 10 p.m. There will be an open house at the newly opened Tampa Bay Toy Train Museum (See Night at the Museum Story, opposite page) Open Layout—Saturday January 29th (during the meet)! Meet Hotel - The Meet Hotel for this meet is the Springhill Suites by Marriott, located at 3485 Ulmerton Rd. (727) 571-1600. This is a very nice semi-new motel. Special TCA rates of $85 (normally $99) will apply. Mention TCA to get the special rate. There are other motels in the area, but none are recommended. To get to the meet from the motel, follow instructions for Ulmerton road, below.

Directions to Meet: From U.S. Highway 19 South-bound, take the Ulmerton Road (State Route 688) exit. Continue south on the frontage road to 126th Ave. Turn right. Go to the first stop sign. The MinnReg Bldg is just ahead on the left. From U.S. Highway 19 north-bound, take the Bryan Dairy exit. Continue north on the frontage road to 126th Ave. Turn left. Go to the first stop sign after the underpass. The MinnReg Bldg is just ahead on the left. I-275 South-bound, take the Ulmerton Road exit (Hwy 688). Proceed west to Hwy 19. Follow directions as above. I-275 North-bound, take the Roosevelt Blvd exit (Hwy 686). Keep left and go west/north to where Roosevelt merges into Ulmerton road just before our meet hotel. Follow directions as above.

Night at the Museum by Charlie Anyan

There is a new Toy Train Museum opening in Saint Petersburg. I have arranged for us to have our open house for the Tampa Bay Area (Largo) meet at the Tampa Bay Toy Train Museum on Friday night on the 28th of January (the night before the meet). The evening will be exclusively for TCA members and family/friends only, from 7 to 10 p.m. There is no charge. Food and beverages will be provided by the Southern Division. You can even bring your own trains (especially if they are American Flyer) to run on their layout. The address is 3220 28th Street North (entrance #4) in Saint Petersburg. To get there, take the 38th Avenue North exit from I-275 and go west to 28th Street (short distance). Turn left and go to the museum. It is next to the railroad tracks. There is a sign on the building that says “PRO IMAGE”. Below is a description of the museum written by Rick, one of the owners: Our purpose is to showcase our favorite two-rail gauge in an engaging and interactive style. The rolling stock is passenger, freight and specialty cars, with American Flyer engines of all varieties, with two tracks of continuous operation. What makes our layout unique is the settings through which our trains travel; most visitors spend their time marveling at the variety and ingenious detail of our scenery. Each piece of our module has its own theme and tells its own story. We do have trees and hills and houses and towns, but set in unusual ways. Something interesting is happening on each module, not just a train passing towns and forests: A troop transport plane has crash landed in the desert, and each of the soldiers is buying a soft drink from a passing truck. Workers struggle to fix a crack in the dam as vacationers water ski above. The Great San Francisco Earthquake has collapsed a portion of that 1906 city as a factory burns (with smoke effect). Real water cascades from a mountain lake as motorbikes dash through the surrounding forest. Campers view the scenic overlook of a city dump at the edge of “Lovers Leap.” There are many more vignettes that keep folks looking for more and more details as the trains roar by. Our overall theme is disasters, but without the tragedy, gore

and violence. We leave the sugary sweetness of snow-covered Santa villages to the others. We offer reality with whimsy, finding humor in many places. If you want something different, here we are. Train lovers, old and young, are welcome to bring their trains to run, help us run ours or just stand and marvel at the wonderful trains, planes, boats and buildings that

fired our imaginations as kids. We have American Flyer "S" gauge, Lionel "O", "HO" and "G" operating track, as well as LEGO trains and buildings.

TCA Southern Division Board of Directors Meeting

Minutes of meetings in Nov., 2010 On Friday Nov. 19, 2010 we gathered at Bruce Pemberton's home for a Southern Division BBQ and live steam train ride as well as viewing a beautiful "S" gauge layout. There were 71 members present at this event. Everyone seemed to have had a great time. An unofficial board meeting was held here with President Anyan, Secretary Dennis, Treasurer Powell, and Director Travitsky present. Mike Powell gave us an update on the proposed 2011 budget and also the 3rd quarter treasurer's report. These will be included in the next edition of "The Layout". Arnie Travitsky reported on the Nominating committee. We are having trouble getting enough committed members to agree to serve. Arnie also talked about tomorrow's train meet at Maitland. It looks like this will be a very successful meet. He also brought us up to date on the banquet to be held Saturday evening after the train meet. At 5:00 P. M. we started gathering at Clark and Ilene Vegazo's home for another open house and dinner. After observing a beautiful post war collection, including all the set boxes, we then enjoyed a beautiful spread of food furnished by the Vegazos. Many antique automobiles were on display during this meet. Clark estimated 200 people attended this event, including SD members as well as car buffs. A short meeting was held in the huge train room where President Anyan thanked all the people for their hard work throughout the year and also presented awards to deserving individuals. A great time was had by all, and we broke up to go rest and sleep after a great day of trains and fellowship. We must get ready for tomorrows train show and banquet. On Saturday Nov. 20 the train show started in the early morning hours, and at 10:12 A. M. President Anyan called the General Membership meeting to order. Officers present were President Anyan, Secretary Dienzel Dennis, Treasurer Mike Powell, Director Arnie Travitsky, and Director Steve Harris. Secretary Dennis reported that we have 453 active members as of today. There are 97 ex-members in the data base who have not rejoined during the last 3 years that Dienzel has served as secretary. We also have 16 deceased members during this time. Therefore, we have 566 entries in our club data base. Mr. Dennis ask for any member who knows someone who has not rejoined, to seek them out and get them back into the club. We are currently at our highest enrollment that we have had during the last few years. For anyone who has not paid your new dues for 2011, please see Dienzel Dennis or Mike Powell and get up to date. Finally, please inform Secretary Dennis any time you have a change of address, telephone number, or email. We want to keep our records current but can only put in what we know about. Mike Powell, our treasurer reported on the clubs finances. We are in good shape and hope to continue running the club in the black by watching what we spend and trying to find new ways to bring in more income. The full report will be included in the next edition of the club's publication, "The Layout". We will also have the new 2011 budget included. Arnie next reported on the upcoming elections and sought nominations from the floor. The following accepted their nominations. Charles Anyan for President, Mike Powell for Treasurer, Dienzel Dennis for Secretary. Jim Herron and Jeff Sawyer agreed to run for Vice President and Bob Mintz did likewise for Communications Director. John Bailey brought up the by-law that stated that you have to be a member of Southern Division for one year before you can run for office. After much discussion, this issue was tabled until further notice. The president made a few remarks about old business and asked for new business. There being none, he proceeded to draw names for door prizes for members only. More names will be drawn for non-members throughout the day when the meet opens to the general public. Temporary Officer Appointments

The offices of Vice President and Communications Officers of the Southern Division have been vacant for some time. The Board of Directors and the Officer Nominating committee have not been able to find any eligible members to fill these positions.

I have been performing most of the duties of both the Vice President and Communications Officer (Bill Trappen is not the Communications Officer). He has been assisting me by putting some ads in publications and forums of which he is familiar, and he is not on the BOD).

I have found two individuals in the SD who volunteered to fill these positions, but they are not eligible to run in the coming election, because they have not been members of the SD for the one year required by our by-laws. However, I can temporarily appoint them until they are eligible and an election can be held. Since we are having trouble effectively conducting the business of this division without our officers, I deem it essential to appoint these individuals, per the article below of our by-laws. The SD Board Of Directors have approved this action.

ARTICLE VIII, Section 1. The Division President shall make such appointments as deemed essential to properly conduct the business of the Division. There is no requirement for them to have been members for any length of time. I have, thereby appointed the individuals below to fill these offices. Bruce Pemberton’s Paradise Park Railroad Southern Division Barbeque and Open House

Everyone had a great time at the Southern Division Barbeque and open house, held at Bruce Pemberton’s Paradise Park Railroad. There was plenty of food, along with rides on Bruce’s live steam railroad. Bruce also displayed his American Flyer layout. Thanks for a great time Bruce!

Clark & Ilene Vegazo’s Open House

Clark and Ilene Vegazo hosted their annual open house/party/car show at their home in Deland. Everyone got to see Clark’s amazing collection of postwar Lionel trains along with his slot cars. There were plenty of real cars too, as Clark displayed his rare Sunbeam Tiger and many of his friends brought along their classic cars. Many thanks to Clark and Ilene for a wonderful evening.
