The Final Printed Edition You hold in your hand what will surely be a collector’s edition. This will be the final printed copy of the Above and Beyond and the other Wednesday Folder documents. Based on the results of the parent survey we conducted this month and the discussion of the Armstrong teacher leadership team, we’ve concluded we can considerably cut back on waste while still getting such information to you via email, Facebook, Twitter and the webpage. We’ll still have printed copies available in the office, and we’ll still make some copies for those individuals who do not have access to email. Otherwise, please plan on receiving this information through one of the other channels. Occasionally, like with the Clash of Classes Personal Training Charts, a printed copy is necessary. Otherwise, we’ll send everything out in digital format only. Thanks for helping us make Armstrong better.

Hard Lockdown Dri"
This week we practiced a hard-lockdown drill at Armstrong. During a real hard lockdown, all outside activities are suspended, students are secured into locked classrooms with the lights turned out. All teachers email the school secretary and principal to communicate if all are accounted for and to communicate any problems. Teachers also post red or green cards to their windows to alert emergency responders if they are OK or if they need help. When the emergency situation has passed, an announcement is made to allow teachers and students to continue with their normal activities. During such an event, we will communicate with parents as quickly as possible through email, Facebook, Twitter, the website, etc. to keep you up to date on what is happening.
The students performed magnificently well during yesterday’s drill. For about five minutes, you could hear a pin drop in any part of the building.

Personalized Goals
Last week, during the kick-off of the Clash of Classes event, students were given a personalized goal to work toward during the next few months of the school year and during the end-of-year testing. This goal is based on setting a new personal best and is, therefore, tailored to how each student performed the last time they took a similar test. The upper-grade students are trying to beat their own score on the SAGE test from a year ago. The lower-grade students are trying to beat their middle-of-the-year DIBELS score.
What makes these goals so worthwhile is that they are all in the reach of the students’ ability. Students are not trying to reach any arbitrary line set by the creators of the tests. Instead, students are trying for personal improvement. This means students who are either well below the proficiency line or well above it, all have something realistic to shoot for. We ask that students and parents post this goal somewhere prominent (i.e. the fridge) for the next two months and talk about it often as all students prepare to “show off their stuff” at the end of the year.
