Europe and its Near Abroad European countries and the European Union have experienced in the last decade a veritable revolution of their internal affairs as well as of their Eastern and Southern geopolitical environment. Instability, conflicts, terrorism, collapsing statehood appears to remain un-‐challenged threats in a wide arch of crisis, stretching from the Gulf of Guinea to the Horn of Africa, the Eastern Mediterranean up to the Baltic Sea. In order to respond to the deterioration of security in Europe’s neighborhood, EU countries need to create a new common geopolitical identity, a process that starts acknowledging the existence of a space of special interest and concern for their prosperity and security. This space, proximal to EU borders, should be regarded as Europe’s Near Abroad and it should be considered part of EU security and stability Commonwealth. Its definition and the study of its political, economical and security dynamics are the objective of the Center for Near Abroad Strategic Studies.
