  • 4A brief history surveyThe great literate and jurist Cino daPistoia, living in Marche in the years 1319 -21, and in Camerino in the spring of 1321,remembers a territory blooming withjuridical schools. Camerino has been a centre of learningsince the 13th century, offering degrees incivil law, canonical law, medicine andliterary studies. Upon request of Gentile III da Varano ofCamerino Pope Gregorius XI, with thepapal edict (Bull) of 29 January 1377,appointed the town of Camerino to confer, after appropriate examination, bachelorand doctoral degrees. The papal edictextended to all of Christendom the validityof these academic titles, which wereconferred with apostolic authority.Students in Camerino were exemptedfrom the payment of all taxes and dutiesand were free from reprisals, even whenhostilities existed between Camerino andtheir native city. They enjoyedunconditional freedom to enter, live in andleave the city. This privilege was alsoapplied to their servants. On 15 July 1727, the Pope Benedictus XIII

with the Bull Liberalium Disciplinarumreorganized the courses according to thecurricula of the Papal Universities. Heconferred the University the title ofUniversitas Studii Generalis. Four faculties were initiated: Theology,Law, Medicine (which awarded degrees inPhilosophy and Medicine) andMathematics. In 1753, a document of Francis I ofHapsburg - Lorraine extended the validityof the degrees from Camerino to thewhole territory of the Holy Roman Empireand conferred the honour of CountPalatine to the Rector. In 1870, with the Unification of Italy, theUniversity of Camerino was recognized asfree and it remains such up to 1958 whenit became a State university.

Innovation and QualityOf importance to the student are theguidelines that determine the choices theUniversity of Camerino makes. UNICAMwas the first university in Italy to introducequality control procedures in itsinstitutional activities according to theinternational norms UNI EN ISO 9001:2000

State and Dukedom, to the papal state, didn't eliminate its cultural vocation: thenumber of academies and scholasticinstitutions multiplied, and palaces andworks of art continued to embellish thecity. In 1861 Camerino was annexed byplebiscite and became part of theKingdom of Italy.

Highlights Piazza Cavour is a harmoniousarchitectural entity encompassing theCathedral, the Archibishops Palace, theDucal Palace and the monument to PopeSixtus V, an impressive bronze statue fromthe late 16th century. The Ducal Palace was built by the deVarano family, rulers of Camerino from theend of the 13th century to the beginning ofthe 16th century, in three different phases. This is evident from the faades. TheRenaissance part (from the end of the 15th

century) comprises the still splendidcourtyard, large halls and the impressivesubterranean construction that todayhouse university halls. From the great balcony outside thecourtyard, one can enjoy magnificent

views of the Botanical Gardens, thesurrounding hills and the SybillineMountains. The Archbishops Palace (14th-16th

centuries) with its high portico of the 16th

century, occupies two sides of the square. It houses the Diocesan Museum. The Cathedral, destroyed by the terribleearthquake of 1799, was re-built at thebeginning of 19th century in Neoclassicstyle on the ruins of the ancientRomanesque church. Inside is a 13th

century crucifix and the majestic group ofMadonna della Misericordia (Our Lady ofMercy) from 1450. Both are carved inwood. In the crypt, the monumental 14th centuryGothic shrine of Saint Ansovino.

Also worth a visit:the Teatro Filippo MarchettiThe small enclosed courtyard of the TownHall (Palazzo Bongiovanni, 16th century) isthe unexpected entrance to the FilippoMarchetti Theatre built at the end of the19th century in the traditional horseshoeshape with elegant boxes on three levelsand a gallery. century) in Renaissance style with itsmonolith sandstone on a high plinth, nowused as conference and exhibition halls;the late Baroque church of San Filippowith its huge, impressive canvas byTiepolo, the famous Venetian painter ofthe 18th century). the Borgia Fortress (16th century)dismantled in the second half of 19th

century. Two large towers and the keepstill remain. From here there is a beautifulview over the Sybilline Mountains.

City MuseumsThe Convent of St Domenico, nowbeautifully restored, houses the the Civic

Museum and the Art Gallery, as well asthe universitys Museum of NaturalScience.

Civic Museum and Art Gallery The archaeological museum containsnumerous items ranging from thePalaeolithic period up to the time ofancient Rome including inscriptions andinscribed plaques. There is an example ofa large mosaic pavement from thesecond century AD, geometrical in designwith medallions containing floral patterns, and some fragments of frescos. There isalso an interesting coin collection and aselection of Greek and Roman pottery. The Art Gallery exhibits, among manymaster pieces, a 14th century woodenpanted Crucifix, many examples of 15th

century paintings and frescos byCamerino artists (Arcangelo di Cola,Girolamo di Giovanni, Giovanni Boccati),among which is the magnificentAnnunciazione e Cristo in Piet byGiovanni Angelo dAntonio, one of themost superb Renaissance masterpiecespainted by a Marche artist.

The townThis is one of the mainholiday resorts of thesouthern Marche and, withover 7,000 palm trees onits wide promenade, it hasa touch of tropical charm. But it's also a thriving townthat doubles as one of themost important fishingports on the Adriatic coast. The older part of the townsits above the main resort,

on the far side of CorsoMazzini, with its castle andnarrow streets brickhouses. In summer this is apopular resort and even alively place with a funnightlife that's great ifyou're younger. The most pleasant stretchof beach - and the highestconcentration of goodhotels - runs from thecentre of town southwards. The beach to the north ofthe large port area is lessinviting although it offersmany more stretches offree, public beach.

  • What are the Credits? Thanks to the introduction of Credits, it istoday possible to assign a quantitativevalue to the hours a student must devoteto a particular subject. One Credit is defined as 25 hours of bothstudy time and time spent in theclassroom or laboratory. Apart from the quantitative measure of theCredit, there is the Grade whichrepresents a qualitative measure of astudent's accomplishment. Credits are a fundamental element in theattainment of the degree and somethingthat can be also 'spent' after the degree.

What is ECTS?ECTS, the European Credit Transfer System, has been developed by the Commissionof the European Communities in order toprovide common procedures to guaranteeacademic recognition of studies abroad.ECTS is a decentralised system basedupon the principle of mutual trust betweenparticipating institutions and it provides away of measuring and comparinglearning achievements, and transferringthem from one institution to another.

    The ECTS System

ECTS Grade% of successful students normallyachieving the gradeDefinition

A 10EXCELLENT outstandingperformance with only minor errors

B 25VERY GOOD above the averagestandard but with some errors

C 30GOOD generally sound work with anumber of notable errors

D 25SATISFACTORY fair but withsignificant shortcomings

E 10SUFFICIENT performance meets theminimum criteria

FX -FAIL some more work requiredbefore the credit can be awarded

F - FAIL considerable further work isrequired

The main objective of ECTS is to guaranteeacademic recognition of studies abroadthrough the transfer of credits. At UNICAM all faculties use learningagreements, which need to be signed bythe student, the co-ordinator of the homeuniversity, and the co-ordinator of the hostuniversity.

ECTS grading scale:The ECTS grading scale has beendeveloped in order to help institutions totranslate the grades awarded by hostinstitutions in ECTS. It provides information on the studentsperformance in addition to that providedby the institutions grade; it does notreplace the local grade.

The ECTS system is mainly based onthree elements: information on the study programs and

the students results; mutual agreement between the

institute of destination and the student; recourse to ECTS credits and ECTS

    scores.
